Healing within using Breathwork
Breathwork is an ancient practice and a powerful tool for healing—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It involves conscious control of breathing patterns to influence your state of mind and body. Different breathwork techniques are used in therapeutic settings, spiritual practices, and wellness routines.
Here’s an overview of how it aids healing:
Breathwork helps you release trauma and emotions that are being stored in the body, it helps you let go of negative patterns, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and freedom.
Learning to breathe in a healthier way and bring more oxygen into the system will help you fully oxygenate the body for more energy and vitality to your muscles, brain,
organs and senses. You can experience better sleep, receive more mental clarity, reinforce the immune system, release chronic pain, maintain a healthy body weight and strengthen the respiratory system.
Breathwork aims to release tension that is often caused by repressed emotions or trauma. Process old, unintegrated emotional energy from early and recent life experiences. Gain the ability to harmoniously deal with difficult situations and develop a healthy relationship with all emotional states to release stress and anxiety.
Breathwork can be deeply transformative, promoting healing at both emotional and physical levels.
Keep Moving in Comfort
No matter your age or activity level, the health of your feet plays a major role in how well you move and feel. When your feet are supported and comfortable, walking, running, or even standing becomes easier and more enjoyable. Proper footwear is more than just about style. Shoes that fit well and suit your activity can help prevent pain, improve posture, and reduce strain on joints. They also support balance and stability, which are especially important as we age. Illfitting shoes, on the other hand, can lead to blisters, foot fatigue, or long-term issues like knee and back discomfort.
Choosing the right shoes starts with knowing your feet. Everyone’s gait, arch, and foot shape are different, so it’s worth taking the time to be properly fitted. A good shoe should provide support where it’s needed, enough cushioning for comfort, and the right amount of flexibility for your movement.
In Vernon and throughout the Okanagan, many residents enjoy staying active by walking the trails, hiking, or joining fitness programs. Having the right footwear helps ensure those activities remain safe, comfortable, and sustainable. Quality socks and insoles can also make a noticeable difference by improving comfort and reducing moisture or friction.
Whether you’re lacing up for a morning walk, a gym session, or a hike with friends, investing in good footwear is one of the simplest ways to care for your body. Movement keeps us strong and connected and when our feet feel good, every step forward becomes a little easier. startingblock.ca

Custom Foot Orthotics WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Orthotics can be used to treat conditions in the feet such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, as well as the effects of diseases such as diabetes or arthritis. They are also often used in helping conditions of the knee, hip and back. The most important aspect when considering treatment with custom orthotics is the examination process; it helps determine if a foot orthotic is an appropriate treatment choice for your condition. Canadian Certified Pedorthists are custom-made foot orthotic and orthopaedic footwear experts. They are one of the few healthcare professionals trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and muscle and joint function. With specialized education and training in custom-made orthotics and footwear, Canadian Certified Pedorthists help to alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet.
Foot orthotics are medical devices made to address pain, numbness and alignment in the body. Pain can occur for many reasons; a biomechanical/physiological problem, excessive weightbearing at work or overuse in sports as well as trauma or post surgical recovery. Canadian Certified Pedorthists help to alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet.
specific and unique requirements, a gait (walking or running) analysis of the patient, as well as a hands-on biomechanical assessment of the feet and lower limb should be done. If it has been determined a custom foot orthotic is needed a pedorthist takes a three-dimensional casting of the patient’s foot and an orthotic is made from raw materials.
Once your orthotics are made they should be fitted to your footwear in person. This is an important step as all shoes are different shapes and sizes and may need some adjustments. If an orthotic does not fit into your shoes properly they could cause increased pain or discomfort.
Unlike overthe-counter solutions custom made orthotics are made specifically for the patient. In order to evaluate a patient’s
There will be a break-in period that should be followed with guidelines provided at your fitting. Everyone responds differently to an orthotic and adjustments may or may not be needed. It is important to know it is normal to have adjustments at times; we all have different sensitivities and respond to changes at different speeds.
If you are experiencing pain your first step is to see your family physician for proper diagnosis and screening. They may refer you to a Canadian Certified Pedorthist to have further assessment on your foot mechanics and alignment that may be the underling cause of your condition.

The Benefits of Choosing Local Fruit and Vegetables
Fruit World is a trusted source for local fruit, vegetables and specialty items. Located on the Trans Canada Highway in Sicamous, it is a convenient stop for fresh products from the Shuswap and Okanagan. Seasonal offerings include apples, peaches, cherries and berries, along with tropical fruit, local preserves, pickles and a variety of made in BC drinks, snacks & grocery.
Choosing local fruit and vegetables is a simple and rewarding way to support both your health and your community. Food grown close to home is typically fresher, more flavourful and naturally rich in nutrients. Local farmers harvest produce at peak ripeness, allowing fruits and vegetables to reach your table with their natural goodness intact.
Buying local produce also reflects a commitment to traditional farming practices that respect the land and the people who enjoy the food. By avoiding genetically modified seeds, growers help protect crop diversity and support natural growing methods. Many shoppers value knowing where their food comes from and feel confident choosing products grown with care rather than mass production.
Supporting local farmers keeps food dollars close to home and strengthens the region. Choosing local produce benefits your health while helping communities thrive.

Create a Lasting Legacy, Right Where You Live. The
Power of Charitable Giving in Your Will.
Many people, throughout their lives, give their time and resources to causes they care about — supporting a local charity, funding the arts, or protecting natural spaces. But what if that impact could continue long after you're gone?
By leaving a charitable gift in your Will, you can create a legacy that extends far beyond your lifetime. And one of the most effective and flexible ways to do that is through your local community foundation.
So, what exactly is a community foundation?
A community foundation is like a permanent savings account for your community. Donations are carefully invested, and the returns are used to support local charities, forever. These funds respond to the evolving needs of the community, whether it’s improving youth mental health, expanding affordable housing, or protecting the environment.
“Community foundations act as a bridge,” says Leanne Hammond, Executive Director of the Community Foundation North Okanagan. “We connect generous individuals with the organizations doing vital work on the ground, and we ensure that those dollars are used where they’re needed most.”
One of the most flexible and enduring ways to make an impact is by creating a
Legacy Fund. These funds can be tailored to reflect your values and priorities, whether that’s a specific cause or a broader vision for community well-being.
“You don’t need to be wealthy to leave a meaningful gift,” says Hammond. “Even a small portion of your estate, say 5 or 10 percent, can translate into significant, lasting support for the region.”
Leaving a gift in your Will is easy. Let’s start the conversation.
T: 250-542-8655 E: leanne@cfno.org
Legacy gifts can be made simply, often with the addition of just one sentence in your Will. And because they can be adjusted over time, they offer peace of mind and flexibility.
“Unrestricted gifts are especially powerful,” Hammond notes. “They allow us to be responsive, because the needs of our communities change. We’ve seen that firsthand in everything from wildfire response to food security initiatives.”
When you include a gift to your community foundation in your estate plans, you ensure that your values continue to shape the future —right here at home.
Breathing Room for Caregivers
Kathy feels pulled in every direction Between work, household responsibilities, and supporting her children, she now finds herself caring for her aging parents. The little time she once had for herself has disappeared. Her situation reflects a growing reality for today’s “sandwich generation”: midlife adults balancing the needs of both older and younger family members.
The pressures are real. Constant demands, limited time, and emotional overload can leave caregivers exhausted and isolated. Self-care, hobbies, and even simple moments like coffee with friends often vanish first, leading to stress and burnout. At the same time, many senior parents don’t want to feel like a burden. They value independence and a positive relationship with their families. This is where professional home care can make a meaningful difference.
Skilled caregivers assist with meals, household tasks, transportation, and personal care, helping parents maintain dignity and comfort while easing the family’s load. As the number of older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia continues to rise, this support is more essential than ever.
For caregivers like Kathy, home care creates breathing room. Even small pockets of relief restore time for exercise, social connection, and rest. With extra support for mom and dad, Kathy can focus on what matters most: sharing meaningful moments rather than worrying about day-to-day tasks. Home care helps the sandwich generation thrive, preserving both relationships and well-being.

Pharmacy Support for Minor Ailments in BC
In British Columbia, pharmacists play an essential role in supporting community health, particularly when it comes to minor ailments. Visiting your local pharmacist first is often the quickest and most effective way to receive care. Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can assess a wide range of common conditions, recommend treatment, and prescribe medications when needed.
A pharmacy assessment begins with a conversation. Your pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, your medical history, and any medications or supplements you currently take. This careful review helps identify the cause of your discomfort and ensures that every treatment option is safe and appropriate. Pharmacists in BC can now prescribe for many minor ailments such as allergies, pink eye, acne, cold sores, heartburn, mild skin conditions, and in certain cases urinary tract infections. This expanded authority helps patients receive timely care without long waits or unnecessary appointments.
Seeing your pharmacist first offers many advantages. Pharmacists have extensive training in how medications work, how they interact, and how to avoid side effects. They know how to tailor recommendations based on age, lifestyle, and health history. Early assessment often prevents symptoms from worsening and reduces the need for visits to clinics or emergency rooms. Many concerns can be resolved quickly at the pharmacy counter, making it easier for you to get back to your daily routine.
Pharmacies also provide several supportive services that enhance patient care. Doctor telemedicine services are available by phone for situations requiring physician involvement. Your pharmacy can help coordinate these appointments, ensuring that the transition between pharmacist and doctor is smooth and that your care remains consistent.
Blister packing is another valuable service that helps patients stay organized and safe with their medications. Each dose is clearly arranged by day and time, making it easier to follow even complex medication schedules. This service is especially helpful for seniors, individuals managing multiple prescriptions, and caregivers supporting loved ones.
Minor ailments prescribing continues to grow in BC. If medication is required, pharmacists can prescribe it during your visit. If non prescription care is more appropriate, they can guide you toward the best options and provide clear instructions for safe use.
Pharmacies also offer customized compounded prescriptions for patients who require medications in a specific form or strength that is not commercially available. Compounding allows treatments to be adapted for children, individuals with allergies, or anyone needing a personalized approach.
Medication review and management services are another essential part of pharmacy care. During a review, the pharmacist examines all your medications to confirm that they work well together, checks for possible interactions, and answers questions. This service improves safety, prevents complications, and helps you feel confident about your treatment plan.
Choosing your pharmacist as your first stop for minor ailments is a reliable way to receive fast, professional care. With expanded prescribing abilities and a full range of supportive services, your local pharmacy is ready to help you stay healthy and feel your best in your community.

What if you could stay –an alternative option
What if you could stay?
Not forever—nobody stays anywhere forever. But what if you could stay in your own home another five years, another ten, instead of moving to a retirement facility at 70 because “it’s time”?
The stairs that feel steeper every month could have a lift. The bathtub that’s becoming dangerous could become a walk-in shower. Cleaning the gutters could be hired out. The yard could stay beautiful without breaking your back.
Two Paths
The typical path: At 68, you’re healthy but the house needs work. You delay. At 72, you slip in the tub—no serious injury, but it scares everyone. By 76, housework overwhelms you. At 78, another fall with consequences. A hospital stay. The family is worried: you’re moving to assisted living.
The alternative: At 68, you assess honestly. You get quotes: $15,000 for bathroom renovations, $8,000 for a stair lift, $5,000 for accessibility improvements. You access home equity through a reverse mortgage lump sum. Six weeks later, your home is safer and designed for the next chapter. At 70, you start getting $1,200 monthly to cover a personal support worker and housekeeping. At 76, you’re still hosting Sunday dinners—still at home.
What staying means
It means you’re still hosting Thanksgiving dinner at the table where your grandchildren learned to play chess. You’ll still be tending the garden you planted 30 years ago, watching the roses bloom every June.
A retirement residence might cost less in the long run. Or it might not. But it’s more a matter of where you want to spend these years—in a place designed for efficiency, or in the home you’ve spent decades turning into yours.
Your home as a retirement plan Things have changed. Thirty years ago, you bought your house for $180,000. You made every payment. You maintained it, improved it, lived in it. Today it’s worth $650,000—maybe more. Houses in Canada have changed from being a place to live in to becoming a piece of your retirement investment portfolio. Reverse mortgages are just a tool to help utilize them as an investment.
In Canada, reverse mortgages carry mandatory protections: you cannot lose your home, cannot owe more than its value, and keep full ownership. You can access funds as a lump sum, monthly payments, or both. No monthly bills. No repayment until you sell.
Most adult children, when asked, say the same thing: “Use it. Stay in your home. We want you living well, not struggling to preserve something for us.”
The question
Everyone’s timeline ends eventually. But when you leave matters profoundly. Leaving at 70 because modifications feel complicated means losing 10-15 years you could have had. Leaving at 82 because home support is no longer sufficient means you maximized your time.
What if you could stay? You can. You just need to decide it’s worth doing.

Private Surgery Options in Canada Are Expanding
For many Canadians, accessing medical care can mean long waits. While the public healthcare system provides essential services, wait times for certain procedures can stretch for months, leaving patients in discomfort or uncertainty. Private surgery options are emerging as a safe and effective alternative, often without the need to leave one’s home Province or even the Country.
Care Close to Home
Contrary to common assumptions, private surgery does not always require travel across Provinces. Depending on the procedure, patients may access care locally or in another Province where specialized expertise or advanced technologies are available. Physicians providing private surgery are carefully selected based on their expertise, experience, and outcomes. This ensures patients receive the highest standard of care while benefiting from the convenience of remaining within Canada.
Faster Treatment, Better Outcomes
One of the greatest advantages of private care is speed. Receiving treatment sooner can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and improve recovery outcomes. From minor procedures to more complex surgeries, private pathways provide options that empower patients to take control of their care. Patients are matched with expert surgeons who have proven track records in their specialties, ensuring safe and effective results.
Clear Guidance and Support
Navigating private surgery can be daunting. Understanding which procedures are available, clinic requirements, and potential costs is not always straightforward. Access to accurate information and guidance helps patients
make informed decisions, navigate options safely, and feel confident throughout the process. Advanced technologies and innovative surgical techniques often complement public healthcare, enhancing treatment outcomes and overall patient experience.
Prioritizing Total Body Health
Private surgery in Canada is ultimately about choice, convenience, and total body health. Patients have access to highly trained doctors, cutting-edge technologies, and supportive care, all without unnecessary delays. As awareness grows, more Canadians are discovering that timely, high-quality medical care is often accessible closer to home than they ever realized.

Support Services Available for You
Archway Society for Domestic Peace— formerly Vernon Women’s Transition House Society—has served the North Okanagan since 1975. Today, Archway provides a wide range of free, confidential support services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Programs include safe shelter, counselling, outreach, child and youth advocacy, and collaborative community initiatives.

A Drive to DeMille’s: Nourish Your Mind and Spirit
Sometimes the best way to lift your spirits is to simply get out of the house. A drive through the Shuswap countryside can do wonders for your mental health, offering new scenery, fresh air, and a chance to reconnect with the world around you. And there’s no better destination for a refreshing outing than DeMille’s Farm Market & Orchard, a local landmark where community, fresh food, and family fun come together.

The sights, sounds, and scents of the market are an instant mood boost, reminding you of the simple joys of local living. Sharing that experience with family or friends makes it even better. Laughter over homemade treats, children delighting in the petting zoo, or simply catching up over a soup and coffee, transforms an ordinary day into a memory.
Each season offers something new: spring greens, summer berries, fall harvests, and winter comforts. Whether you’re stocking
up for the week or taking a leisurely drive, DeMille’s invites you to slow down and savour life’s wholesome moments. Step away from the screen, breathe in the fresh farm air, and rediscover the joy of community, connection, and countryside charm waiting at DeMille’s.
From Heirlooms to Passwords: Planning for the Modern Estate
Once upon a time, estate planning was simple: house, bank account, maybe a cabin at the lake. Now? Add Facebook, email, online banking, and the world’s most confusing array of passwords. When someone passes away, those digital accounts don’t just disappear; they linger like polite ghosts of a former life.
Here’s the catch: in British Columbia, your executor doesn’t automatically have access to your online accounts or digital assets. Without clear instructions, family members can find themselves locked out of photos, messages, or even money. It’s one of the most common surprises in modern estate administration, and one of the easiest to avoid.
The other surprise? Many people still believe their spouse “just gets everything.” Under
B.C.’s Wills, Estates and Succession Act, that isn’t always true, especially if there are children from a previous relationship. We know that family is more than just blood relatives, and your estate plan should include all your loved ones.
The solution to both problems is the same: clarity. Update your will, include digital instructions, and let someone you trust know where the passwords live (preferably not scribbled on a sticky note).
Because whether your legacy is a family home or a lifetime of vacation selfies, a little planning ensures your loved ones inherit memories - not confusion and frustration.

The Joy of Community Living
Choosing where and how to live as we age is one of life’s most important decisions. For many older adults, moving into an independent senior living community brings not only comfort and convenience but also a renewed sense of purpose, belonging, and independence.
Independent senior communities are designed for active adults who want to enjoy life without the everyday burdens of home maintenance, yard work, or repairs. Imagine waking up in a bright, modern suite where everything you need is within easy reach, from fitness classes and dining options to walking paths and friendly faces right outside your door. These communities are built around freedom and choice, allowing residents to focus on what matters most: connection, health, and happiness.
One of the greatest benefits of community living is social connection. Loneliness and isolation can be real challenges as we grow older, but in an independent living setting, there are endless opportunities to meet new people, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. Whether through coffee mornings, group outings, or hobby clubs, there is always something happening to bring people together.
Safety and peace of mind are also key advantages. Communities offer secure buildings, emergency response systems, and on-site staff who are available if help is ever needed. This sense of security allows residents and their families to relax, knowing support is close by if required.
Health and wellness are naturally woven into daily life. Communities provide access to fitness programs, nutritious dining, and recreational activities that
encourage physical movement and mental engagement. From yoga classes to art workshops, these activities help keep the mind sharp and the body active.
Perhaps most importantly, independent senior living brings freedom from chores, freedom from worry, and freedom to truly live life to the fullest. Residents can travel, volunteer, explore new hobbies, or simply enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings, knowing that everything is taken care of at home.
Independent living communities are not about giving up independence. They are about enhancing it. They offer a supportive, social, and enriching lifestyle designed to make the golden years truly golden. For many, it is not just a new place to live; it is a new way to thrive.
Experience more freedom, friendship, and fulfillment. Discover the benefits of independent senior living today.

Redefining Retirement Through Connection and Choice
Retirement today looks different than it did a generation ago. More older adults are seeking a lifestyle that blends independence with meaningful social connection, a place where they can feel at home while continuing to learn, engage, and enjoy life. Across the Okanagan Regency Retirement Resorts has built its philosophy around exactly that: creating vibrant, resident-centered communities where people can thrive.
What sets Regency communities apart is not one single feature, but a shared culture rooted in warmth, belonging, and respect. Walk into any Regency residence, whether in Kelowna, Vernon, or Penticton, and you’ll notice the same welcoming atmosphere. Residents greet one another by name, staff members take the time to connect, and shared spaces are thoughtfully designed to encourage conversation, activity, and comfort.
At the heart of the Regency approach is the belief that independence and support can coexist. Residents enjoy the freedom to live life on their own terms, with the reassurance that help is available if they need it. For some, that means enjoying fully independent living with access to dining, recreation, and housekeeping. For others, it may mean choosing optional support services that make day-to-day life easier. The emphasis is always on choice.
Active Living teams across Regency play an important role in creating day-to-day vibrancy. Fitness classes, educational workshops, outings, social gatherings, and creative programs are all designed to meet a wide range of interests and abilities. Staff members often describe the best part of their work as witnessing the natural friendships that form among residents and the supportive atmosphere.
Suites and amenities vary by location, but comfort and community remain at the core. Residents might spend an afternoon relaxing in a fireside lounge, joining a book club, tending a community garden, or enjoying a chef-prepared meal with friends. Spaces such as hobby rooms, outdoor patios, libraries, games lounges, woodshops, and quiet reading areas provide opportunities to engage or unwind, at any pace.
Above all, what residents and families appreciate most is the genuine sense of home. That feeling often begins the moment someone walks through the door. Team members aim to make everyone feel welcome and supported, ensuring each individual experiences the warmth and consistency.
Whether someone is seeking a more social lifestyle, hoping to simplify daily responsibilities, or simply looking for a community that aligns with their values, Regency Retirement Resort offers options to suit a variety of preferences and needs. Across every location, the promise remains the same: a warm, engaging environment where residents can continue to live fully, confidently, and with joy.

Keep your EARS open for this new technology!
Bluetooth® wireless technologies are being upgraded and will be life-changing, not just for hearing aid wearers, but for anyone wanting to hear easier in theatres, pubs, airports, movies, and more.
Bluetooth® Low Energy audio is the next generation of Bluetooth® audio which is faster, offers better sound quality, and uses less battery power compared to previous generations.
AuracastTM broadcast audio is a groundbreaking feature of Bluetooth® Low Energy Audio that allows a single device (e.g. a Smartphone or transmitter) to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of compatible nearby devices: headphones, earbuds, and, yes, certain hearing aids. How does it work? An AuracastTM transmitter broadcasts to one or many compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.
A listener can select from a list on their Smartphone which broadcast to receive and start listening immediately. Gate 4 announcements at the airport. A muted TV at the pub. Spanish translations of display descriptions at a museum. Your son’s video of your grandchild singing in a school play. Versatile and amazing!

Delivering Nutritious Meals and Peace of Mind to Seniors
Heart to Home Meals®, Canada’s leading meal delivery service for seniors, is excited to announce expanded service to Interior BC. We believe life should get easier as you age. Staying healthy is an essential part of aging well, and it can also be simple. JoAnn Kubas franchise owner for Heart to Home Meals Interior BC, explained that while caring for a family member, she recognized the need for a reliable service that delivers nutritious meals directly to seniors. She believes that proper meal nourishment has a strong impact on mental health and supports seniors in living healthy and independent lives.
For more than a decade, Heart to Home Meals® has been preparing and delivering nutritious frozen meals to seniors across Canada. With easy ordering online or by phone, no delivery fees, and no monthly commitments or contracts, seniors and
their families can feel confident knowing they have a dependable resource. The company proudly supports the Veterans Independence Program.
Based in Kelowna, Heart to Home Meals Interior BC provides deliveries to seniors in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton, Osoyoos, Oliver, Okanagan Falls, Armstrong, Lumby and Salmon Arm.
The menu includes over two hundred meal choices, from a protein filled breakfast omelet to a low sodium beef dinner to desserts with no added sugar. The meals are created to provide essential nutrients along with delicious flavour. Portions are available in a variety of sizes, and special diet options include pureed, minced and gluten free selections.
Growing Bolder, Not Older
We’re living in extraordinary times. The world feels busy, unpredictable, and sometimes even a little overwhelming. And yet, in the middle of it all, we have a choice: to focus on what weighs us down, or to lean into what lifts us up.
Social connections are your secret superpower. Surround yourself with positive, energetic people who inspire you to say “yes” to new experiences. Laughter truly is the best anti-aging treatment.
Aging isn’t about slowing down it’s about leveling up! Each year adds another layer of wisdom, experience, and opportunity to embrace life with more courage than ever before. “Growing bolder, not older” means flipping the script. It’s not about what we have to do, it’s about what we get to do.
Choosing curiosity over comfort and embracing possibilities instead of limitations.
Don’t underestimate the power of perspective. Instead of counting candles on your cake, count the stories, lessons, and moments that have shaped you. Wear your years like a badge of honor, they’ve earned you the right to live boldly.
So, take the trip, hire the service, sign up for the class, wear the bright colors, and order dessert first every now and then. Growing older is inevitable. Growing bolder is intentional. When we choose boldness, life stops being a task list and starts becoming a series of adventures.

The Power of Purpose: Thriving After 50
The Power of Purpose: Thriving After 50
Turning 50 or more isn’t a finish line, it is a fresh start. With decades of experience, wisdom, and resilience behind you, this chapter of life offers a unique opportunity to redefine what fulfillment means. It is a chance to pursue passions, explore new adventures, and deepen connections with yourself and others.
Studies show that having a sense of purpose improves physical health, mental clarity, and longevity. Whether it is volunteering, mentoring, learning a new skill, or strengthening relationships, purposeful living keeps you engaged, energized, and curious. Purpose can take many forms, and it does not have to be grand—it only needs to be meaningful to you.
Start by asking: What brings me joy? What legacy do I want to leave? Then take small steps. Join a local group, take a class, reconnect with old friends, or rent a RV for your next getaway. Let someone else handle the delivery and set up while you simply arrive and enjoy. Spending time in nature brings a sense of calm and freedom, whether you are exploring peaceful lakes, scenic trails, or charming small towns.
Do not underestimate the value of your story. You are not just aging, you are evolving. Each experience adds depth, perspective, and joy to your life. So embrace this season with curiosity and courage, because the best years are not behind you—they are unfolding now.

A New Beginning for Kohanna
When Kohanna first arrived at the Kelowna BC SPCA, she wore a bright blue collar — the only clue to a past life that had vanished. Trembling with fear with her tail tucked tight, she searched every face for the people she had lost. Whether she had been purposefully abandoned or wandered too far, no one ever came forward to claim her, an alltoo-common story.
Thanks to compassionate Forever Guardians – these are animal lovers who chose to leave a gift in their will or estate to protect and care for vulnerable animals - Kohanna received the care, patience, and love she needed to heal. Slowly, her fear gave way to trust. The gentle hands of BC SPCA staff that once seemed so unfamiliar became a source of comfort, and each quiet moment reminded her she was finally safe.
“Kohanna’s transformation is what keeps us going,” says Shannon Paille, Kelowna Community Animal Centre Manager. When a dog like her comes in scared and shut down, and then blossoms into a happy, trusting companion, that’s the power of Forever Guardians’ love in action.”
Before long, Kohanna’s tail wags grew more confident, her playful energy returned, and she rediscovered the simple joy of being loved. When she finally met her new family, she approached them shyly, then melted into their embrace, as if she knew she was home.
Kohanna’s story is a testament to the kindness of Forever Guardians who believe every animal deserves safety, respect, and love. To learn more, visit foreverguardian. ca or contact Clayton at foreverguardians@ spca.bc.ca or 1-855-622-7722.

Young amputee embodies legacy of The War Amps CHAMP Program
The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program is celebrating 50 years of helping young amputees with artificial limbs, peer support and opportunities to thrive.
For Kendra Harper, 28, the program has been part of her life since she was just shy of two years old. Born without her left arm below the elbow, she received funding for limbs designed for everyday use and activities like swimming and dancing. But what she values most are the friendships and lessons from CHAMP seminars.
“From big things like driving to small things like tying a shoe or holding a burger with one hand, we learn from each other,” says Harper, now an elementary school teacher in B.C. “I wouldn’t be half the teacher, leader or person I am today without CHAMP.”
This year brought a full-circle moment when she gave the keynote at the 2025 Vancouver CHAMP Seminar, inspiring the next generation.
Founded in 1975 by war amputee veterans, CHAMP continues its legacy of “amputees helping amputees,” made possible through the public’s support of The War Amps Key Tag Service.
