Friday Evening: Arrive & Indulge
Welcome to Centre Wellington! Kick off your weekend by diving fork first into our incredible local food scene with something for everyone. Whether you’re craving comfort food, elegance or a patio with a view, our restaurants are ready to impress. Keep the good vibes going after dinner by wandering into one of our lively pubs, where local musicians set the soundtrack for a perfect Friday night.
Saturday: Small‑town charm meets big‑time views
Morning in Belwood
Start your day with a short, scenic drive to the charming Village of Belwood, located just 10 minutes outside Fergus, or 20 from Elora. Grab a satisfying breakfast at Joanie’s Neighbourhood Restaurant, where the small town welcoming atmosphere can be felt over a cup of fresh, hot coffee. Walk a minute up the street and browse a vast selection of handmade home décor at Wendy’s Favourite Things. Before you go, be sure to visit Belwood Country Market. Their butter tarts are the stuff of legend (trust us) — and while you’re at it, grab a fresh made sandwich for the road.
Midday adventure at Belwood Lake
Next stop: Belwood Lake Conservation Area. Explore well groomed trails and all nature has to offer on your way to the top of the Shand Dam — an impressive piece of Canadian history and a fantastic lookout from 75 feet. Cast a line in the river below or wander over to the spring fed quarry for a refreshing dip and sandy beach perfect for summer.
Afternoon in Historic Downtown Fergus
Say goodbye to the hustle and take your time on the scenic route back to Fergus. Pull over at Confederation Park and relax on a short, peaceful riverwalk with a postcard worthy view of St. Andrew’s Mill perched above the Grand River. Camera highly recommended. From there, head into historic downtown Fergus. Browse charming shops and meet friendly locals but don’t miss the riverwalk just behind the main street. You’ll stumble upon lush gardens and a striking stone staircase winding its way down the gorge. It’s pure magic and reminiscent of old times.
Evening entertainment
As the sun sets, it’s time to treat yourself again. Enjoy dinner at another local pub or eatery, then take your pick: Live music and drinks, a show at the Fergus Grand Theatre, the thrill of the races at Grand River Raceway or a classic movie night at The Gorge Cinema in Elora.
Sunday: Fall in Love with Elora
Ease in to your morning in the Village of Elora, affectionately known as “Ontario’s Most Beautiful Village.” Start with breakfast at one of the many restaurants and cafés (you can’t go wrong), then take your time wandering storybook streets filled with unique shops, galleries, and plenty of historic charm.
Lunch with a view
For a truly unforgettable bite, head to the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa. Set high above the Elora Gorge, it offers jaw dropping views — including a front row seat to the iconic “Tooth of Time”.
Explore the Gorge
After lunch, stroll over to Victoria Park for a stunning lookout over the gorge, known as “Lover’s Leap.” Want to get even closer? Take the stairs and step right into the heart of it all: towering limestone cliffs, the cool rush of the Irvine River, the picturesque David Street Bridge, and hidden caves. It’s an adventure waiting to unfold, all at your own pace.
Sunday Evening: One Last Taste
Before heading home, savour one more delicious bite at a local eatery. It’s a fitting finale to a weekend of adventure — and a reminder there’s plenty more waiting to be discovered in Centre Wellington.

The Grand River, one of Ontario’s premier cold-water fisheries – known for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye and brown trout – is bordered by limestone cliffs and a thriving ecosystem. Calm, clear stretches of the river also make this waterway a world class fly fishing destination. Minutes away, Belwood Lake is a popular spot for boating and provides plenty of opportunities to hook your next big catch. The lake supports ice fishing in the winter months.
