HARMONIZED SALES TAX (HST) IMPACT ON REGISTERED ADULT PROGRAMS EFFECTIVE MAY 1, 2010 In response to the provincial government’s introduction of a new harmonized sales tax (HST) effective July 1, 2010, Parks and Recreation has made the necessary adjustments to applicable program fees beginning with 2010 summer programs. HST will replace the GST charged previously on registered programs for 14 years of age and older. These programs include: aquatic advanced lifesaving, aqua fitness, fitness and other adult training programs. Fees for these summer programs have been published in this guide with HST included. HST becomes effective July 1, 2010. However, the government has identified May 1 to July 1, 2010 as a transitional period to changeover from charging GST to HST. If you register after May 1, 2010 for an adult summer program with a start date of July 1, 2010 or later, HST will apply. All spring adult programs fees are published with GST included only. HST does not apply to spring adult programs as they all end before July 1, 2010. For more information on the new HST tax, please visit Ontario Ministry of Revenue at www.rev.gov.on.ca or Canada Revenue Agency at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.

THE ART & POETRY OF WILLIAM BLAKE’S SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND OF EXPERIENCE Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 pm As beguiling as some of these poems are, they were also a witness to profound social changes in early Industrial England that were occurring at the same time as the tumultuous French Revolution. T.S. ELIOT’S FIRST QUARTET Wednesday, September 29th, at 7:00 pm While some of us may know of Eliot’s fastidious Anglo-Catholicism, his Four Quartets are a distillation of universal spirituality, a map of the human condition in all its despair and hope, thereby being the most concise spiritual handbook of the 20th Century.

POETRY OF E.E. CUMMINGS

INTERMEDIATE PHOTO

War and Poetry: Two Men and Seven Women: Wilfred Owen and R.A.D. Ford and Women, War, and, Poetry Thursday, November 11, at 3:00 pm How do women as diverse as Canada’s Margaret Atwood, Iraqi’s Mazek a la Ma’Ika, Palestine’s Fadwa Tuqan, and others tackle such a subject as war? British Captain Wilfred Owen broke the mold on wartime poetry with his unbearably poignant verses. And what of a little known Canadian poet who was also Canada’s Ambassador to the USSR for 15 years? These were Skoggard’s sources for the dramatic oratorio Bayt Lahm and War & Peace. Robert E. Lee said: “It is a good thing that war is so horrible, otherwise we should love it too much.”

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Wednesday, October 20, at 7:00 pm If Eliot teaches us to understand life, then Cummings demonstrates to us how to live it. The Family Business Preview: A February 2011 Minarovich Gallery Show Wednesday, November 24th, at 7:00 pm $8 Mem / $10 Non. (At the door) Peter and Ross Skoggard were two of four boys growing up among artists. Their paternal Swedish Grandfather and their mother studied in China, and were painters. This inspired Ross to follow in their footsteps. Now there is a rich heritage of family history in pictorial art: portraits and the same scene painted each of the three generations. Peter presents a preview of the February show with examples from his own collection.

TALK & CONCERT: My Musical Settings of Poetry of Margaret Atwood Saturday March 27th, 2011 at 3:00 pm $8 Mem / $10 Non at the door Skoggard will be doing a reading and an appreciation of some poems of this great Canadian literary figure, followed by concert performances of his music inspired by her incisive and direct poetry. One set of three poems will be performed on the Elske Albarda piano with clarinet. This will include three songs: Romantic; Sekhemet, The Lion-Headed Goddess of War, Violent Storms, Pestilence, sand Recovery from Illness, Contemplates the Desert in The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and The Loneliness of the Military Historian. The other cycle, Half Hanged Mary, will be performed on Jan Albarda’s harpsichord.

Elora Family Martial Arts Centre Why Kids Love Learning Martial Arts Maybe it’s because there are no bench warmer’s in our classes — every child participates in every activity — no first string, second string, third string. Nobody’s left out. Maybe it’s because they meet new friends who share a common interest, and become part of the Martial Arts family. It could be that they are setting goals and working to achieve them, and when they do, they feel great about themselves. The personal attention our instructors give them, will keep kids interested and engaged and keeps them having fun. Parents who have their kids in our classes love seeing their kids learn self-discipline, self-confidence, respect for others, equality, and how to defend themselves in any situation. Call or stop by the school for more information on our school. 519-846-2612

aquatics General Pool Information: Did you know....? Private Rentals

Private Lessons

Cancelled Classes

• A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Rental times are available Saturday and Sundays between 4:00pm-5:00pm. Call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519-843-2800) for more information.

• Private lessons run in the same 9 lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for Semi private lessons you can register 1 child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You need to contact the Sportsplex to register the 2nd child. For more information call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services, (519) 843-2800.

• Classes with low enrollment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Strollers • Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left in the area by the pool office. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required.

Deck Supervisor • During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor that oversees all the lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions.

Spectators • Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted.

Volunteer • Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer? There are volunteer opportunities available in the Aquatic Centre. We prefer volunteers with some aquatic background (Bronze Cross or Assistant water safety instructors). If interested please call the Sportsplex, (519) 843-2800 and speak with the Supervisor of Aquatic Services.

Gift Ideas • Looking for gift ideas? Why not purchase swim tickets or passes for Aquatic programs? Inquire by phone (519) 843-2800.

Swim Lesson Progressions: • Did you know your child may repeat a level 3 or 4 times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level.

Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex (519) 843-2800 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff.

Missed Classes • If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up.

Transfers • You can switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.

Diapers •As a courtesy to all we request and require that all children who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes.

Other Tips: If possible, please refrain from feeding your child a large meal prior to their swimming lesson.

• Family Lessons Do you have difficulty coordinating all of your children’s swimming lessons? We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons on Monday and Friday evenings called “Family Lessons”. You can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes. Your children will likely be in a split class. Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers.

Free Public Swimming • NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD PUBLIC SWIM will provide free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55 pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month.

New for the Fall: We’ve made some changes to our programs for the Fall session. These are some highlights. Please look through the aquatic section for more details.

Fall Swimming lesson format:
