Careers Newsletter May 2021 I have enjoyed “Teams” interviews with Year 11 recently and it has been a pleasure to support them in their career aspirations at this stage. Remember transferable skills are key to employability and we add to these throughout life. Be aware of your skill set and expand your skills as you go along. If you have missed out on a career interview, email me now. It is difficult to approach companies for work experience with many offices having under 25 % of their work force back in the office. There are many virtual work experiences available and it is a question of searching Google but www.springpod.co.uk/virtual-work-experience-programmes is a good start. Also, there are amazing virtual taster courses that make a huge difference in that they give you an insight before applying to a particular area. www.investin.org and https://debatechamber.com have some great courses. Universities are running virtual open days and well worth a look: www.opendays.com. Remember, the earlier you think about “careers” the longer you have to change your mind. According to work by the Social Mobility Commission The highest earning routes are A levels or a combination of A levels and technical courses. Courses combining academic and technical qualifications are relatively high-earning too, with 70% of students ending up in jobs ranked in the top 50% of earnings. Prior attainment mostly explains why young people choose the highest-earning courses. However some groups are more likely to choose the lowest paying routes, regardless of their achievements. March survey data pointed to a substantial increase in hiring activity across the UK. Permanent placement growth hit a near six-year high, while temp billings expanded at the quickest rate since November 2017. Employers are now more likely to say that the shift to homeworking has boosted productivity (33%) than they were in June 2020 (28%). Women make up 15% of senior management positions at financial services firms with 7,552 of a total 50,639 senior management jobs held by women. High-skilled occupations dominate in those areas where demand has been maintained throughout, especially health, social care and protective services. Trade skills were more likely to slump during the first lockdown but recover subsequently. Retail and hospitality sectors jobs, such as leisure, travel and related personal service; sales; and customer service have remained weak throughout.

Skills shortages in the creative sector Key findings of research carried out by the Creative Industries Federation include: The UK creative sector is the fastest growing part of the UK economy, contributing over £100 billion in gross added value (more than automotive, aerospace, life sciences and oil and gas sectors combined) By 2024, the creative sector is expected to employ c2.18million people and the STEM sector is expected to employ c2.03million people with an overlap of c616, 000 people working in roles such as web design and development, programming and software development, IT architects, information and telecommunication directors.
