Soybeans are widely grown in the American Midwest, with Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota among the top-producing states. Growing soybeans in the Valley is a challenge, given its variable amounts of rainfall for a crop that requires consistent moisture.
“We’re working on finding a variety (of soybeans) that will grow here with the kind of weather conditions we have in the Valley,” Klostermann said.
Another Midwestern staple—corn--is establishing a bigger foothold in the Valley. Corn has been grown here for many decades, but its prominence among RGV crops has historically carried a lower profile. There has been a change in that regard as new varieties of corn tested at Rio Farms have produced good yields and are planted across the Valley.
“There’s more corn being grown in the Valley than we’ve seen before,” Klostermann said. “Corn is one of those crops that has come a long way.”
Water & Weather
Various crops have come and gone over the 100-year-plus history of commercial farming in the Valley.
Strawberries are grown here, albeit in small volumes at a few family farms. Vegetable crops like tomatoes, celery, and broccoli were formerly grown in greater abundance when the region had more stable water supplies for irrigation. Sugarcane is a crop that is completely gone after a roughly 50-year existence in the Valley. Its mill in Santa Rosa--and the industry as a whole--shut down in 2024, citing drought and instability of a water source as the reasons for its demise.
As always, weather and water are the determining factors as to which crops will continue to be grown in the Valley and the ones that can be potentially added. Some of the emerging crops in the region--sesame, canola, and sunflowers--require lower quantities of water than citrus, and vegetables and far less than what sugarcane required.
Grain sorghum, with its red-orange flower heads, can thrive with little water, and the crop has been grown in the Valley for decades. It is typically harvested during the hot summer months and is primarily used for livestock feed. Sorghum is increasingly being used for ethanol production and even as a human food source as an ingredient in gluten-free products.
Cotton was once known as “King Cotton” in the Valley and across the Southern United States. Its acreage is on the decline here due to water considerations and foreign competition that is driving down the market price and profitability of growing the crop in the United States.
It all points to a versatile RGV agricultural industry. There are fewer acres dedicated to

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward
Brothers in the Doctors Office
Today’s Wisdom: The message may not move me, Or mean a great deal to me, But hey, it feels so groovy to say…
~Peter, Paul and Mary, “I Dig Rock and Roll Music”
I had a strange experience a while back. I finally hit the age where it was recommended by my doc to see a cardiologist. One generally doesn’t ignore instructions like that, so off I went on the appointed day. The clinic was large, and there were plenty of people in the waiting room. While my wife and I sat there awaiting our turn, the staff came in every few minutes and called a new name.
After hearing several names called, my wife and I both caught on at about the same time. I told her it feels like they are calling my high school class. There were two Mikes, a Paul, a Dennis, a Ruth, a Larry, a Bill (me), and a few more we can’t recall anymore because no one over 70 can ever remember a name. I realized long ago that each generation has a common cluster of names, and my high school class was probably the
perfect example. We actually had seven Mikes in my 1968 class of 85 kids. Not one Justin, Derek, Jordan, Noah, Lucas, or Levi.
Needless to say, I felt right at home in that waiting room. These were my people. None of us knew each other, but just hearing the names gave me a sense that we all had a common bond: high school in the 1960s. We all shared rock n’ roll, Vietnam, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Martin Luther King, and an eighth grade English teacher with higher expectations of us than any of us were really interested in exhibiting.
I’m sure if someone had brought coffee, we all could have had a wonderful afternoon together. There had to be some great stories in that waiting room.
But we didn’t talk. Instead, we sat there patiently, each waiting for the next encounter with reality we all had traveled there to endure. I hope they all got great news, but I doubt that to be the case.
One of the things I have learned is that bad news becomes more common as we age. Maybe we should all be connecting with our own Mikes, Pauls, and Larrys to see how they are doing.
I’m just sayin’. •
Why Choose an Annual Site?
• Escape The Cold – Winter differently this season where sunshine and your RV site are waiting for you.
• Lifelong Memories – Your winter place is so much more than an RV or cottage, it’s your own memory maker all season long.
• Your Home Away From Home – Leave your everyday a million miles away, without going a million miles away. Your second place feels like home one minute and a different place entirely the next.

Hello Travel Friends
It’s Parade Time in South Texas
Photos by Eryn Reddell-Wingert
Dear Travel Friends,
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a holiday tradition enjoyed by many families across the country. When I was growing up, I loved watching the Rockettes and looking for the giant balloon characters being pulled down the parade route. These days, my kids love looking for Bluey and Hello Kitty while we’re drinking hot cocoa and having breakfast snuggled on the couch. Until a few years ago, I didn’t realize what great parades we have here in the RGV that can bring that same sense of nostalgia and holiday anticipation. If you haven’t attended the McAllen Holiday Parade, it’s an experience you will never forget. This parade consists of a 1.5-mile parade route, giant balloons, floats with lights and music, local bands, and so much more. Santa is there, too, so make sure you’re on the nice list! This event brings families together for a fun night of celebration. If this is something you’re interested in, you can attend one of two ways. Grab your chairs or find a spot in the bleachers a little early with some snacks--and friends--to watch the parade along Bicentennial. You can also purchase tickets and watch the parade from inside the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tickets will run around $15-$25, and you will have a seat for the show. mcallenholidayparade.com is where you can grab these tickets. Saturday, December 6, is parade day, and it begins at 6 p.m. The first time I took my family, I wasn’t sure what to expect. We left amazed and felt silly we hadn’t attended before. Now it’s a yearly tradition my whole family looks forward to.
Another, less traditional, parade is also happening a little further south, hosted by Port Isabel. This parade happens in the evening on the water and is a fun take on Christmas at the Island. The Lighted Boat Parade has local boats decked out in holiday cheer, with twinkling lights, holiday music, and people having a great time onboard. The route goes through Laguna Madre Bay, and people enjoy the view and choose their favorite entries while watching along the shore. For even more fun, you can hop on a boat and be part of the parade. This parade also takes place December 6, and we have tickets to join the parade available at welcomehomergv.com These tickets include being on a Breakaway Cruises boat with hot cocoa, holiday treats, great music, and a fantastic party. We’ll even have some blinky holiday-themed items to help you stand out in the crowd. This trip is always a blast, and we’d love to have you join us in the fun. Even though our
temperatures are higher than up north, we still know how to bring the festive charm to South Texas. Think about getting out there and experiencing one of these local parades so you can experience the holidays like a local! •

Perspectives Choose Gratitude
by Janette Bridgeman
Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, and that got me thinking about all the things I’m grateful for. I’m thankful that I grew up with a Christian mother who saw to it that all of us kids were at church practically every time the door was open! I am thankful for the Lord helping me to meet the man that became my husband and for the wonderful marriage I have now. I am thankful that God has healed me from cancer and preserved my life.
Somebody may look at that list and say, “Wow! What a great life you’ve had. You have a lot to be thankful for.” And of course, they’re right. However, naturally that’s not the whole story. I could be bitter about those very same things if I looked at it in a different way. I grew up without a dad at home, and we struggled financially trying to live off only mom’s small salary. However, I thank God that my mom was a Christian and raised me to serve God. We didn’t necessarily have everything we wanted--and it was frequently a struggle--but I choose to be thankful for my upbringing because it kept me close to God.
I’m thankful for my husband. I could be bitter because I was 40 years old when I met and married him. This was my first marriage, so I waited over half my life before I met him. And at times it felt like I was never going to get married. Yet again, I choose to be thankful that he’s in my life now and that I have a good marriage. Whatever the reason was that it took so long, I’m just glad that we’re together now. And then, of course, in my fight against cancer, there were many times the sickness just about killed me. But God continued to sustain my life at every turn; at every negative diagnosis, He was there to comfort me and heal my body and give me strength to fight.
So what’s my point in telling you all this? I want to encourage you to choose to be thankful and have a positive outlook regardless of the circumstances surrounding your life. Why should we be thankful? In the Bible, God commands us to do so. ”In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.“ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV
This is for a good reason. You’ll be happier. It will change your outlook and perception. The more you’re truly grateful, the more things will start going your way. There are physical, mental, and spiritual benefits! Studies prove gratitude can decrease depression and improve resiliency. Also, grateful people often have lower blood pressure, less pain, greater energy, and even longer lives. Thankful people report higher self-esteem and are more likely to help others (which is linked to greater happiness). People who capture grateful thoughts before they go to bed sleep better than those who don’t. Gratitude actually increases dopamine and serotonin, which activates the feel-good center of the brain, creating feelings of happiness and contentment.
Spiritually, the best result of all is that you’ll have peace! There’s nothing quite like sweet Jesus peace. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 KJV
This Thanksgiving and always, I encourage you to choose gratitude. It will pay off in so many ways! •

Lambs Loom
Happy Thanksgiving Y’all
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
WOW! Another year of “stitch it forward” has flown by here at The Lamb’s Loom. We are so grateful for so many things over this past year. The Donation Chest keeps filling up with beautiful handmade items, our Learn-2 classes keep us busy, and the Sit-n-Knit Area is always full of fiber and friends! We are truly thankful for all these blessings--and more--all year. Toward the end of the year, The Lamb’s Loom is full of activities that pack up and move all the donated items out to the 20-plus mission organizations we serve all over the world. These donations go to orphanages, the homeless, and others in need, to warm and encourage souls during difficult times. There have been thousands of handmade projects put in our Donation Chest over the years, and if we have learned anything, it is that we are blessed to have fun together, make new friends, play with yarn, fill that Donation Chest, and, above all, God is in charge of distribution! So we know that what is made and given already has a place to go.
We do hope you’ll come and visit and hear a few stories of the encouragement these gifts have been to so many people around the world. And become a PEG! Pray, Encourage, Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. From the items donated to the financial donations we receive, we are so very thankful for everyone who has come alongside this ministry. We live in the middle of Thanksgiving all year. Happy Thanksgiving…every day…all year!
We do hope you will join us this season and #stitchitforward with us! We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we’re located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com • ~ Prayers ‘n Purls, Friends!
