Sometimes being a local tourist can be just as much fun as being an actual tourist. It always surprises me when I mention one of the Rio Grande Valley’s landmarks or attractions and hear “locals” say they’ve never even heard of it. That’s exactly why our local tours are where it all begins.
Sharing the places, history, and hidden gems of our region with both our Winter Texan friends and our local community is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. There is so much to see and experience right here in our own backyard; sometimes it just takes someone to point the way.
For many travelers, it all starts with a simple day tour. People join us once out of curiosity and, before long, they’re hooked. The next question is almost always the same: What’s next?
The good news is we’re already working on an incredible lineup for next season, with plenty of new day trips, overnight tours, and extended adventures in the works. Whether you’re discovering something new for the first time or finally visiting a place you’ve driven past for years, we’d love to have you join us on the journey.
A Season of Tours and Travel With WelcomeHomeRGV
“It was a mini cattle drive, as far as us city folks are concerned.” Kim Matson is referring to an incredible moment during a recent King Ranch day trip with
Welcome home RGV. A herd of about 30 Texas Longhorn cattle--including a few calves--moving through the ranch, passing alongside the group’s tour bus.
“It was quite spectacular,” Matson said, referencing the different patterns of each animal and how they didn’t seem aggressive, or even large, except for their notorious horns.
Longhorns weren’t the only intriguing sight. Matson says they saw all kinds of wildlife--peacocks strutting around the historic ranch home and lots of wild

turkey, deer, and javelina roaming the ranch lands. (A bit of trivia Watson learned during the guided tour: A group of javelina are called a squadron.)
Watson has signed up for a number of Welcome Home tours, including the annual Cruise with Kristi and the Fall Foliage Voyage out of Boston in September. “This year, I don’t want to miss anything.”
Arl Carlson is of the same mindset, having taken part in Welcome Home RGV’s annual Land & Sea Christmas in Galveston tour in December. “It was awesome!”
This tour is highlighted by the City’s annual Dickens on the Strand Festival, harking back to 19th-century Victorian London , with paraders in period costume, Dickens-era characters meandering through the Strand, high schoolers playing bagpipes, and costumed vendors with street stalls and rolling carts.
Carlson’s most recent Welcome-Home-hosted adventure: the two-night Historic San Antonio trip. “It was great! We went to the top of the Tower of the Americas.” The Tower, built in 1968, stands 750 feet tall and is an iconic landmark of the San Antonio skyline.
Three of San Antonio’s historic missions were also on the itinerary. “You would not believe that behind those weather-beaten walls--the beauty of those churches on the inside,” shares Carlson. “The artwork, the painting, the hand carving…it’s all gorgeous.”
Welcome Home RGV’s Sarah Denzer and Stella Riester accompanied the San Antonio tour group in February. In addition to navigating the details of each adventure, Welcome Home staff often accompany outof-town tours. Curt and Stella Riester will guide the next San Antonio tour in December.
“Welcome Home is well versed in travel,” says Carlson. “They cross their t’s and dot their i’s. They are super people, and I love them dearly.”
So much so that Carlson and her husband, Pat, are booked for the Shades of Ireland trip in October. Welcome Home partnered with Collette® (Travel) out of Ireland to customize this 10-day vacation. It will be Carlson’s first trip to Europe, departing from her home state of Wisconsin. “I’m trusting them to get me there. Sarah assures me everything will be fine.”
On Matson’s agenda: the VIP Fredericksburg Wine Tour and Plaza Santa Maria Bloodless Bullfights. “We were so excited to see Welcome Home is offering bus rides.” Welcome Home RGV partner RGV Tours

Perspectives Time Is on Our Side: A Rock Anthem and Spiritual Reflection
Time is a concept that has fascinated and perplexed humanity for generations. We chase it, we try to save it, and we often lament its passing. The Rolling Stones’ classic rock anthem “Time Is on My Side” encapsulates a certain youthful optimism, a belief that--no matter what happens--time itself can heal wounds, mend hearts, and ultimately bring about change. The infectious refrain, “Time is on my side, yes it is” becomes a mantra for resilience and hope, comforting us in moments of uncertainty. The song’s message is clear: no matter the current pain or heartache, time will eventually work in our favor.
Yet, as the catchy chords and Mick Jagger’s defiant vocals echo in our minds, we are reminded that the song’s assertion is both powerful and, perhaps, fleeting. The Byrds’ “Turn! Turn! Turn!” further deepens this awareness, reminding us that everything in life has its season. Adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes, the song gently affirms that there is “a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot.” Ecclesiastes 3:2. Life unfolds in cycles--moments of joy, periods of sorrow, times of growth, and times of letting go. This recognition calls us to accept each phase as it comes, trusting that every experience has its rightful place. When we are young, it is easy to feel that time is endless, that we have all the hours in the world to chase our dreams, mend our mistakes, and reconnect with those we love. The song gives us a sense of invincibility, a sensation that there is always another tomorrow, another chance. The beat marches on, just like the clock on the wall, assuring us that we are masters of our own destiny. However, as the years slip quietly by, we begin to notice that time is not always so accommodating. The reality dawns that time is a gift, not a guarantee. Life throws Curveballs--loss, change, and

unexpected challenges—and, suddenly, the days seem to move faster, the seasons blur together, and we realize that time on this earth, while precious, is not infinite. The wisdom of age and experience teaches us that the refrain “time is on my side” is more of an unrealistic look at humanity.
This transition often leads us into a deeper, spiritual reflection. Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” This perspective encourages humility and gratitude, reminding us not to take time for granted but to use it wisely. It calls us to live fully, to seek meaning and purpose, and to nurture relationships that matter most. John 9:4 says, “We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work”. In recognizing the finite nature of our existence, we are inspired to make every moment count--to forgive, to love, and to pursue what truly brings glory to God and to us, joy and fulfillment.
Rather than fearing the passage of time, this awareness can lead us to a greater sense of peace and awareness of God and who He is. By embracing the reality that “time is on our side” only when we align our lives with our creator, we find a new kind of freedom. We stop worrying about lost opportunities and instead focus on the present, on the people we cherish and the passions we pursue. In this way, the iconic rock anthem takes on a new layer of meaning: it becomes not just a song of hope but a gentle reminder to treasure the days we are given, knowing that every tick of the clock is both a gift and an invitation to live well.
“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”. Heb.12:1 •

Dance Moves of 106-Year-Old Joe Horak Bring Smiles and Hope
by Arl Carlson, with the
It was at a Big Band Jam at Valley View RV Resort in Mission in January 2025 where I saw an elderly gentleman dancing. I watched him as he danced, making several interesting dance turns. After a dance had ended, I couldn’t resist complimenting him on his dancing skills. I asked him how old he was. He replied, “I was 105 on December 25, 2024.” His son had brought them to the Jam and cared for them while there.
In January 2026, I saw Joe (also known as Pete) Horak and his wife dancing at Mission Bell to the big band music he loves so much. His moves were a bit slower, and Monica was patiently trying to follow his guidance. People were watching them as they danced, admiring them as they would get up to start another dance. I said to him, “I hear you reached your 106th birthday on Christmas Day,” to which he replied, “That’s what they tell me!” He still has a great sense of humor and is very sharp and quick-witted.
Joe’s son, Dan, drove them to Texas in late October 2025 from their home in Yankton, South Dakota, to spend another season as a Winter Texan dancing to big band music when I saw them January 12, 2026, at Mission Bell with grandson James, who joined them. Dan was heading back home to Nebraska in a few days. It was in Valley View January 28 that I asked Joe and James if I could write and publish an article about him for Welcome Home Winter Texan. James offered to put something together for me and answer some
of Joe’s grandson, James Horak
questions that I had so, together, we wrote this story about Joseph Francis “Pete” Horak.
Joseph Francis “Pete” Horak was born December 25, 1919. He grew up in Winnebago, Nebraska, and served in World War II and the Army’s 85th Infantry Division. He fought in Africa, landing in Casablanca, and later in Europe, entering Italy via the Naples area and fighting in Italy and France
Joe was a rural mail carrier for 30 years, beginning about five years after returning home from the War. He raised cattle during that time for additional income. He met the love of his life, Valera, one year before the War started. They married April 29, 1946, spending some time in Chicago for their honeymoon. They bought a house in Winnebago, Nebraska, where they raised four sons and a daughter. He loved working outdoors and became an avid gardener, raising crops for their growing family.
Joe and Valera share a passion for polka, dancing at Shore Acres Ballroom in South Sioux City, Nebraska, in the 1950s. This was the place to go to dance, where all the big bands performed. While traveling to dances in the area, they met Marvin and Monica, who owned a Chevy dealership in Yankton, South Dakota.
Joe loves to fish. He and Valera had a pull-behind camper and a little aluminum boat they put on top of their station wagon. They packed up their five kids and traveled all over Yellowstone
in Canada. They were introduced to Minnesota fishing and went fishing just north of Detroit Lakes. Joe decided to go back to Minnesota with his uncle, who enjoyed fishing by Ashby, Minnesota. While there, Joe sighted a cabin southwest of Battle Lake, Minnesota, in 1958; he still owns it today.
Joe discovered Mission, Texas, during several visits in the 1970s when he visited friends who had already retired here. Joe and Valera pursued their love of dancing to big band and polka music, and they followed the Eddie Skeets Orchestra to many of his dances. In 1979, Eddie played at Mission Bell and Victoria Palms. For the next 12 years, they would come down for a couple of weeks. They had friends who bought a home at Wagon City North, and in 1994, Joe and Valera bought their place there, where he still resides today.
While they were in the Valley, Marvin and Monica stayed with Monica’s sister in Weslaco. After a few years, they purchased a place in Wagon City North. Unfortunately, Marvin passed away in 2000. They had a great group of friends, and Monica continued to come to Mission for the winters and enjoyed dancing with her friends, including Joe and Valera. When Valera’s health declined in 2017, Monica offered to help care for her. Valera passed away in 2019 at the age of 98 after 72 years of marriage.
After all their years of being friends, Joe and Monica married in 2021; at 101 years old, Joe married his dancing partner, Monica. Joe is now 106, and Monica is thought to be 96. Joe moved into Monica’s home in Yankton, South Dakota, and Monica moved into Joe’s home at Wagon City North. Because they are aging, when they return to the north, James and their family have secured a new home at a retirement community in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
I asked Joe to what he credits his longevity, to which he replied, “I read the labels and watch the sodium levels and saturated fats. I will look at similar items and choose the one with the least sodium.” He doesn’t eat processed food. He loves his fruits and vegetables and eats fish twice a week. Until recently, he had a beer every night. He told me he keeps his mind sharp by reading a lot of science and health magazines and might take a nap for an hour in the afternoon. He credits his long life to working outdoors and dancing the polka. It’s a joy to other dancers, too, as they watch Joe lead Monica to dance the next steps, as his dance moves bring smiles to everyone watching.
Watching this couple dance brings smiles to everyone, thinking, “Maybe there is hope for me!” •
A 20-Year Journey for My Grandmother
by Christine Ardis, editor of Welcome Home Winter Texan
Ithink I was in college when my paternal grandmother and my oldest sister, Ann, created genealogical photo albums for my siblings and me. On the first page, a six-paragraph, typed story began with this heading: “GRANDMA (HELEN) ARDIS FAMILY HISTORY.”
The first paragraph read, “My great, great grandmother was Carrie Pearson. She was born in Norway and married Cornelius Nelson Hersdal. They came to America on the Sloop (Restoration) in 1825 from Stavanger, Norway. There were 52 people aboard the Sloop, and it took 3 months to arrive at Kendall, New York. Carrie’s brother Cleng Pearson was the scout that came to America and made possible the migration of the first Norwegians to America. The Sloop Restoration and its passengers were the ‘Mayflower’ of the Norwegians. My great, great grandparents were Quakers and left Norway due to religious persecution.”
I read and re-read this paragraph, focused on the information about my four-great uncle, Cleng Pearson. Could that be true? Could he really have prepared the way for the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to come to America?
I had so many questions, but I allowed countless other things—moving from Illinois to South Texas, teaching, and life--to take precedence for several years.
My Journey for My Grandmother
Then, in the fall of 2006, I embarked on a master’s degree in creative nonfiction. I took classes at The University of Texas – Pan American (now The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) part-time while teaching in McAllen. As I moved through my coursework, I knew I had to decide on a subject for the thesis I would have to write to earn a Master of Fine Arts. I decided to write about my four-great uncle, Cleng. I still have a difficult time accepting that my grandmother was no longer with us as I began the research for my thesis. She passed away in 2007 at the age of 94. She would have loved taking this journey with me, and I regret not starting it years earlier.
Uncle Cleng
This story could be a Winter-Texan-season long, so I must condense it for now
As I began exploring Cleng’s life, I learned that, though my grandma spelled his name “Pearson,” historical accounts spell it “Peerson.” I found some things I learned rather comical. Cleng’s father’s name was Peder Torkildsen. Because Cleng was the son of Peder, in Norway, his name was Cleng Pedersen. His sister, my four-great grandmother, Carrie, was Carrie Pedersdatter—the daughter of Peder. I had so much fun telling my siblings that I am Christine Jamesdatter, the daughter of James (Ardis).
When Cleng came to America, Pedersen became Peerson.
My grandmother’s words about Cleng coming to America as a scout proved to be true. He established a settlement for Carrie and her family and everyone else on the Sloop Restauration (known in America as the Restoration) in Kendall, New York. The passengers are known as the Sloopers.
Restauration arrived at New York Harbor October 9, 1825, three months after it set sail in Stavanger. There are so many intriguing stories about this journey I may be able to share with you in a future publication. One involves the U.S. government seizing Restauration, upon its arrival in New York, because there were more passengers on board than the law allowed for its size. Then-President John Quincy Adams intervened, releasing the captain, the Restauration, and its cargo, which several of the passengers had invested in to fund their homes in Kendall.
The winters in Kendall proved brutal, so Cleng set out—on foot—to discover a new settlement for any of the Sloopers who chose to leave. (Again, there are many stories about Cleng’s journey, but there are two that are critical to today’s tale.)
One is that Carrie moved to Illinois after the death of my four-great grandfather, Cornelius Nilsen (Nelson). I grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and have had the opportunity to visit her grave at the Nelson Family Cemetery in Norway, Illinois.
The other is that Cleng helped establish another settlement in Clifton, Texas, roughly 35 miles west of Waco. The Texas Legislature awarded him a 320-acre land grant for his efforts.
When I started my thesis journey, I made my first visit to Clifton, spending a day with Mary Colwick Orbeck (1927-2021). Mary was the descendent of Ovee Colwick, who Cleng left half of his land in Clifton to in exchange for Ovee and his wife, Guri, caring for him until his death so he could remain on the land he loved.
During our visit, Mary drove me to that property. I do not have the words to adequately describe how I felt that day as I stood on the land where he once lived. How I wished my grandma and my dad could have been with me.
So many things have happened since my first visit to Cleng’s property, the most magical being that a Norwegian couple, Thomas and Eldbjørg Mannes, bought the property and saved it from losing its historical significance. They have restored the cabin where Cleng lived on the property and done so much more.
My most recent visit to Clifton and to the Cleng Peerson Farm (You can follow it on Facebook) was in December 2025 as the City of Clifton celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian immigration to America. This was the culmination of events held in Norway and America throughout the year. Thomas and Eldbjørg still live in Norway but are in Clifton as often as possible. There is much more to share but so little space. For now I will leave you with this: Share your stories with your children and grandchildren. You never know what journeys you will inspire. But do it now so you can enjoy the ride, too!

Today’s Wisdom: Map out your future - but do it in pencil. The road ahead is as long as you make it. Make it worth the trip.
~Jon Bon Jovi
Awhile back, I played a little rock ‘n’ roll show in the dining room of the senior care center in my hometown. We all had a good time. However, I was also struck with an interesting observation. Way back in 1967, I had stood in that very room, awe struck at the size of the pile of wood trim in front of me. My father was the painting contractor for the construction of the facility, and I was the “crew.” That pile was all mine to stain and varnish. For the record, at the age of 16, I did it--and a lot more.
I thought it interesting that, as a teenager, my one dream was to be in a band. There I was, 56 years later, playing that very room. I think that teenager would have been happy to have known that gig was somewhere ahead of him in life.
But what about the bigger picture? The road from that
by Bill Ward
room in 1967 all the way back to the same spot all these years later was a long and circuitous one. It included many miles, many relationships, many experiences, many trials. If that young fellow could somehow have seen all that ahead of him, would he be happy about it? Would he see it as a grand adventure laid before him? Or would it have been a disappointment, with hopes of there being so much more to life?
Perhaps it is good that, at 16, I wasn’t really thinking about all that. Most of us weren’t. Life’s questions were much simpler then. I was more interested in just getting a car and a better guitar.
Perhaps it is good that we can’t see ahead. Life is fun when it isn’t all planned out. Every day is full of new possibilities. Instead of following our road, we get to create it as we go. Perhaps that road can only be viewed behind us. Then we can judge it appropriately. How is your road looking? Hopefully, it is still under construction.
I’m
just sayin’. •

Hello Travel Friends
Ireland Bucket List Trip
October 1-10, 2026
Dear Travel Friends,
If my red hair and pale skin tone never gave it away, let me be the first to confirm I do--in fact-have Irish in my family history. It’s a little part of my genetic background that I’ve always wanted to explore. Have you seen the stunning backgrounds of the Irish countryside filled with castles, a million shades of green, and picturesque little villages? Being able to travel to Ireland is a must on my bucket list. Is it on yours, too?
Ireland is also known as the Emerald Isle and is part of the United Kingdom. It’s known for famous literary giants like Yeats and whimsical mythological creatures like leprechauns and fairies. How could it not be, living day to day in front of such incredible backdrops? Ireland is also the originator of Halloween, Guinness, and the engineers of the Titanic. My favorite Ireland fact is there are no snakes! We can all agree that’s a huge plus! Well… that and the accent. How charming, right?
Between cliffs and lighthouses are darling villages packed with incredible people who have a dayto-day life that looks a little different than South Texas. That’s the kind of experience I love to make happen. That’s why I chose Ireland as the first ever international land tour offered by Welcome Home RGV!
This 10-day Ireland land tour is the perfect way to get out of the country stress free. You’ll be able to see 11 different Irish cities, including Dublin, Galway, Kingscourt, and more. We’re all going to be lined up to kiss the Blarney Stone, and we’ll even get to see a sheepdog demonstration and stay overnight in a castle! This trip offers a perfect balance of scheduled activities with a local guide, as well as some free time to shop, explore, and eat at the places you choose.
Colette is the tour company we’ve chosen, and I’ll be on the trip as the host from Welcome Home. Someone will be there every step of the way to help you with luggage, driving you from the airport, and even pointing you in the direction of the nearest restroom. Those of you who have traveled with me overnight know I always take great care of all my travel friends. I aim to please! This tour will be even more magnified and is guaranteed to leave you with a smile and incredible memories.
I know this trip is going to fill up quickly because we’ve already begun. For more information, check out our website at welcomehomergv.com and request more information on the Tours & Travel page. Come along with me and we’ll check Ireland off our bucket lists--together. •

Europe,
Hello Travel Friends
Dear Travel Friends,
My friends and family sometimes laugh at me because I always have a trip on the calendar that I’m planning. Even when I’m on a vacation, I’m often dreaming up the next one. There are so many amazing places to see and incredible experiences to have; if I don’t get planning, I might not make it everywhere, right? Some of you have been in my office and seen my scratchoff calendar of all the places I’ve been to in the world. Maybe one day more of it will be scratched off than not.
Here We Come!
In the last year, our Travel Department has expanded outside of Texas and outside of the Winter Texan months. Many of you have been on fun adventures with me and the other members of our Travel Team. I love getting to take a small part in helping my travel friends experience the world as stress-free as possible. In the coming year, I’m excited to take our adventures a few steps further with some great new travel plans. We’re partnering with Collette® (Travel Tours) to offer some land tours to Europe. These small group tours will offer personal attention and a friendly environment. This October, we are taking our first land trip abroad…to Ireland. We’re going to see the whole country from top to bottom, with an amazing itinerary packed with a great mixture of scheduled fun and free time to explore on your own. I’m excited to connect with my Irish ancestors, and I’d love for you to come along, too!
Spring 2027 is going to take us on another Collette® excursion to explore Portugal You don’t want to miss the breathtaking views of mountains and coastline. The cultural experiences, vibrant foods, and fascinating cultures we’ll get to explore will be a once-in-alifetime opportunity. My husband speaks fluent Portuguese, and I’m excited to have him tag along as our group’s personal interpreter as well.
The pricing for both of these trips includes round trip airfare and can be adjusted to begin at whatever airport you choose. There are exciting pre- and post-trip extensions available with both destinations, as well.
We’re known for our group travel and specialize in 55+ travel. What does that mean for you? We’re here to help, and I’m here to help! I truly love being part of making travel possible
for you all. I love helping you take the perfect photos to show your grandkids, help you decide which trip is perfect for you, and curate these experiences to exceed your expectations.
If you have questions or are interested in booking, check out our website at welcomehomergv.com or call me at the office at 956-687-5115. (Now that the season is winding down, I might actually be there!) •
