We’ve got big boots…and we cannot lie. As the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas, and in Mercedes, that couldn’t be truer. The famous Mercedes boots are scattered throughout the city–just waiting to be discovered–and they make the perfect excuse to turn an ordinary day into a mini adventure. Track them down, add them to your scavenger hunts, and use the journey as a fun way to explore corners of the Valley you may not have seen before. Don’t forget to snap a few photos along the way and share them with friends and family back home, a little proof that Texas really is as big and bold as they imagine.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, keep the exploration going. Hunt for the butterflies in Mission, spot the Hidalgo Killer Bee, stroll through the McAllen Mural District, or relax for a moment in the iconic South Padre Island beach chairs. The Rio Grande Valley is full of unique sights, hidden gems, and photo-worthy stops just waiting to be experienced. So get out there, have some fun, and be sure to tell us what treasures you discover along the way.

Big Boots Highlight City’s Western Heritage

The 30 handcrafted boots standing nearly six feet tall on Mercedes Street corners and roadways represent the city’s western heritage and its connection to early Rio Grande Valley history.

The Mid-Valley city was founded in the early 1900s by a land company. The American Rio Grande Land & Irrigation Company, while setting up agricultural operations, established some of the first irrigation systems to move water from the river to new farm fields. About three decades later, the first of the agriculture shows kicked off that would make Mercedes the eventual home of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show.

Mercedes bills itself as one of America’s premier locations for boot making.

In 1929, Mexican bootmaker Zeferino Rios set up his first shop in Mercedes and, with it, brought the tradition of handmade boot making to the city. Today, a company bearing his name, Rios of Mercedes Boot Company, makes five lines of boots in the city, and they are sold to retailers around the country--and the world. This rich background of agricultural history and boot-making heritage were the inspirations in 2013 when the big boots of Mercedes started going up on the city’s streets and busy intersections.

Hernan Gonzalez, who was then the executive director of the Mercedes Economic Development Corporation, originated the idea in 2013. The first batch of boots went up that year. New ones have been added over the years, including one in 2014 for the newly named University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. All of the boots bear the logos and colors of universities in Texas, the United States, and Mexico.

“The boot is very symbolic of the heritage of the whole area, and it has become the iconic symbol of Mercedes,” said City Commissioner Ruben Saldana, who is also the district administrator for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Center in Weslaco. “It’s very fitting to have the boots represent our city.”

Enduring Tradition

The Mercedes EDC has a map on its website that shows where the big boots can be found in the city. They are concentrated in the downtown area. The big boots of Texas A&M University and the University

of Texas sit across from each other in caddy-corner style on the intersection of Texas Avenue and 2nd Street. The UTRGV boot is found on the corner of Ohio and 4th streets. Out a bit from downtown is the Harvard University boot, on the corner of Vermont Avenue and the Expressway 83 access road.

The alumni of universities that have big boots representation can be seen taking selfies and group photos with the colors and logos of their colleges depicted on the boots. Gonzalez, by getting the boots put up, wanted the displays on

street corners to be sources of pride by graduates of the colleges while hopefully inspiring youngsters to attend those schools in the future.

It’s amidst the big boots where Camargo’s Western Boots still operates today on West 2nd Street with a master of handmade boot making at the helm.

“I’m old school,” Henry Camargo said in a Valley Business Report story. “I do everything by hand.”

He learned the craft decades ago from the Rios family at the original Rios of Mercedes facility just west of

downtown. In 2023, Texas Monthly asked, “Is Henry Camargo the last of the great Texas bootmakers?’

He may be, but boot-making will continue in Mercedes as it has for decades, with the big boots on street corners a fitting tribute to that heritage.

“It just puts a smile on your face,” Commissioner Saldana said of the connection between Mercedes and its boot-making history. “Boots and our heritage to agriculture are well engraved into our community.” •

Riders Up!

You have heard of the Kentucky Derby. Well, at Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr, we have Donkey Races. February 9, over 175 residents enjoyed the antics of the six donkeys as they made their way around the track. Fran and Vicki Bautch have taken on the responsibility, for the past eight years, of training the donkeys to make sure they are prepared for their time in the spotlight.

“There is nothing better than a roomful of residents having a rip-roaring good time,” said Nancy Fischer.

The donkeys will race one more time this season before they are put out to pasture for some well-deserved rest. •

The Perfect Day on Texas’ Best Beach

Here’s your one-stop spot with all the information you need to navigate the beach accesses of South Padre Island. Within the city of South Padre Island, there are 25 beach access points, all one after the other along Gulf Boulevard. Various amenities are provided at different accesses to ensure you have everything you need to have a successful beach trip. Below are the amenities and the beach access points where they are provided:

• Need a head-to-toe sand wash off? Here are some access point with shower stations:

SPI Beach Access: #2, #3, #6, #11, #13, #18, #20, and #21

• Need a restroom? Here are some access point with restrooms and portable toilets: #1, #4, #5, #8, #9, #11, #14, #16, #17, #22, and #24

• Gather around the picnic table at beach access #11.

• We’ve got the whole family covered, even the pups! Find a dog water fountain at beach access #8.

• For those who like to exercise with a sea breeze, find an exercise station at beach

access #5.

• For wheelchair accessible beach access: #3, #4, #6, #7, #11, #13, #14, #17, #18, #20, and #21

All access points offer either soft mobi-matts or walkovers, designed to give you a comfortable path to cross over the sand so you can spend more time enjoying the view and less time worrying about burning your feet. Upon reaching the beach, after following the path of each access, a flag will be seen. Each day, the flag is changed to a different color to communicate current surf conditions and potential hazards to beachgoers:

• Green: Low risk of rip currents

• Yellow: Moderate risk of rip currents. Caution is advised.

• Red: High risk of rip currents. Conditions are considered dangerous.

• Purple: Indicates the presence of hazardous marine life.

Cameron County also offers visitors six different beach access points on the northern end of the Island. Two of the six county access points

are parks: Access #1 is Andy Bowie County Park, and access five is Edwin King Atwood County Park. Both of these parks offer perfect amenities to fit your beach-day needs, such as a parking area, RV hook-up sites, beachside covered pavilions, BBQ areas, restrooms and showers, and a boardwalk to the beach.

Just remember: It’s a $12-per-vehicle parking fee--cash only. To differentiate Cameron County beach access points from City of South Padre Island beach access points, you’ll notice any signage concerning the Cameron County access points does not contain the three blue, pink, and yellow umbrellas; the City beach access points do.

Make time to experience the beach as it was made to be. Spend hours lying out on the sand, admire the beauty of the foaming waves stopping right at your toes, and share laughter with your family while making memories on Texas’s best beach!

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

Lend a Hand

Today’s Wisdom: When you stretch out your hand in love, that’s when civilization manifests ~Abhijit Naskar

Ihad a bad week over the summer. Some of the ravages of age caught up with me, and a bit of surgery was required. It didn’t go as I had anticipated, and I struggled for a few days. All of that was bad enough, but I also experienced something most guys don’t like. I had to ask for help.

First came the return journey to the hospital for an afternoon of efforts to get through the crisis. Two surgical nurses and my surgeon became my champions. They went overboard, ensuring that we eventually had a good outcome. I expected no less because they were professionals, holding down very responsible positions doing what they did for me.

But it was at home where I came to appreciate the care of others. The lady who shares my life was right there for whatever I needed. She wasn’t a professional--certainly wasn’t being paid-and I knew she would rather be doing just about anything else besides waiting on me. That isn’t how it is supposed to work. The guy is supposed to be taking care of her. That’s our job.

The impact of that sentiment hit most when I somehow

managed to slouch my way into a recliner in a position from which I could not extract myself. There she was to the rescue again, pulling me up when I could not do it myself.

I have known many women--and men--who have spent time as significant caregivers to ailing spouses. They are actually all around us, but I suspect we don’t appreciate or recognize them like we should. Add in all the sons and daughters caring for aging parents, and the list of caregivers in our communities grows greatly.

It is good that we have these people in our lives. I can’t imagine enduring bad days and having no one. Had I been alone, I might now be a rotting skeleton in a recliner. But what about all the folks who don’t have that someone close by? How many of our own neighbors live alone, with nothing but a phone to summon help. Who rushes them to the doctor when they can’t drive themselves? Who calms their worries when things are going bad? Who gets them out of the recliner?

Maybe we all need to make sure we know who is in our neighborhood and our phone numbers are programed into their phone. When others really have to ask for help, ours might be the hand that is most critical. I’m just sayin’. •

World Golf Hall of Famer Lorena Ochoa Co-Designs First Course in U.S. in McAllen

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

McAllen’s momentum continues with the announcement of an exciting new destination golf course to be developed adjacent to Champion Lakes Golf Course, marking a historic first for the city, the state, and World Golf Hall of Famer Lorena Ochoa.

Unveiled during the 2026 State of the City Address, this transformational partnership with Ochoa, alongside renowned designers Rafael Alarcón and Carter Morrish, will deliver a one-of-a-kind golf experience in South Texas.

The new course will be located at 2701–3501 South Ware Road, directly west of the existing Champion Lakes Golf Course, further strengthening McAllen’s reputation as a regional hub for recreation, tourism, and quality-of-life investments.

“This project reflects exactly where McAllen is headed, bold, thoughtful, and community focused,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “We are investing in amenities that bring people together, elevate our city’s profile, and create places our residents can truly be proud of while delivering world class experiences.”

The course will be designed by ALARCON–MORRISH–OCHOA Golf Design, who will lead

construction, promotion, and marketing efforts with periodic visits to the area planned as the project progresses.

“This is a milestone for the game of golf,” said McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “Lorena Ochoa’s first U.S. golf course design speaks volumes about McAllen’s growing national credibility and our commitment to creating meaningful recreational opportunities thoughtfully designed for players of all skill levels.”

The new course will be a short-course concept, offering far more than a traditional par-3 layout. Drawing inspiration from the most memorable holes Ochoa and Alarcón have played around the world, the design will balance recreation and accessibility and deliver a competitive challenge.

Key features include:

• Holes ranging from under 100 yards to more than 250 yards, requiring golfers to use every club in their bag

• Engaging, attainable challenges designed for all

ages and skill levels, while still testing top collegiate and amateur players

• Unique global design elements, such as:

o Beach-style bunkers

o Raised greens

o Rolling fairways and phased in undulations

o Tree clusters, water features, and native Rio Grande Valley vegetation

The course will incorporate best-in-class construction practices and premium materials to ensure quality, durability, and long-term sustainability in a high-use environment. Design considerations will also emphasize water conservation, environmental protection, education, and youth development.

“It will be a golf course the local golfer will be proud to call home and one the visitor will talk about when they return home,” said Alarcón.

This expansion builds upon Champion Lakes Golf Course’s long-standing role as a cornerstone of McAllen’s Parks and Recreation System, reinforcing the City’s commitment to accessible, high-quality amenities that enhance daily life and drive economic impact.

Additional details, including construction timelines and future programming, will be announced in the coming months. •

Perspectives GPS: God’s Positioning System

As I was driving alone one day to my sister’s house, which was 4½ hours away, I was so grateful to have our GPS to guide me on my way. It was so comforting to know it would not let me get lost, no matter what wrong turns I made. I couldn’t get lost, even if I tried! It would constantly monitor me and reroute me when I went the wrong way and put me right back on the path to my destination. And if the signal was blocked or lost, all I had to do was keep driving till the signal was found again. After a while, it directed me off the regular road and onto a road I had never been on before. That concerned me a little bit, but I knew it knew what was up ahead and would lead me on the best and safest route, so I just continued on my way. It eventually led me straight to my sister’s house, and we had a good visit!

During the trip, I was just thanking God for that GPS when He spoke to my heart and said, “I am your lifelong GPS! I know what’s up ahead, and I will lead you and guide you every step of the way down the path I have planned for you. If you get onto the wrong road, I’ll lead you back onto the right path. I’ll always be with you wherever you go.” That blessed me so much! I never had thought about the Lord Jesus being

my GPS!

After He spoke that, I remembered Psalm 23 where it says He is our Shepherd and will lead us and guide us and be with us forever. Then I thought, “Wow! There are no trees nor mountains nor buildings that can block God’s signals and lead us astray! He ‘monitors’ us everywhere we go, and nothing can separate us from Him.” As a matter of fact, Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” With God as our GPS, we’ll never be alone; we’ll never be lost from Him, and we’ll never go where He can’t get us back on the right track.

If you want to see just how far He will go to be with you and rescue you, read Psalm 139, where it says He searches out your path; He is aware of all your ways; He lays His hand upon you; He goes with you wherever you go, and His hand will guide you, and His right hand will hold you. If you would like God to be your lifelong GPS, just ask Jesus to come into your heart and be your Lord, and He will! •

Lambs Loom Round and Round

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Round and round, faster and faster. A few of us were laughing the other day about the “speed” of this year. We just had Christmas. How is it going to be March next week? Well, if you are in that boat with us, we have a solution: more Sit-nKnit time for everyone!

That’s the “round and round” we need more of in life. Just looming on a round loom, crocheting a hat in the round, or knitting a pair of socks in the round. There’s nothing like spending time with friends, sitting around and slowing down the day one stitch at a time.

Then there’s the show-and-tell to share when a project is finished! Take your time, check out the pattern, enjoy the yarn--row by row--and slowly

breathe in a deep breath of accomplishment and the joy your project brings to you and others. There’s a spot for you in the Sit-n-Knit circle, just waiting to help you slow down and enjoy a day of fiber fun. Pour a cup of tea, and we can all welcome March together, whether we can believe it’s here or not!

We do hope you will come and join in all the yarn

fun and stitch it forward with us! The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Our regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com. •
