Love is in the air, and it feels especially fitting that two of my favorite people grace the cover of this week’s newspaper in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Curt and Stella hold a very special place in my heart, and our friendship is proof that you never know when life is about to bring you something wonderful.
You know those rare connections where it feels like you’ve known someone forever? That’s exactly how it is with them. Their friendship feels like home, the brother and sister I never had yet somehow found.
I’m sure many of you have stories like this, too, people you met here in South Texas who quickly became dear friends, and before you knew it, part of your family. That’s the magic of this community.
Here at Welcome Home RGV, I’m grateful every day for the incredible work family we share. I truly love every single one of them.
Whether you’re celebrating this Valentine’s Day with a sweetheart, good friends, or the chosen family that fills your life with joy, may your day be full of love… and maybe just a little chocolate, too!

Curt and Stella... A Love Story
by Eryn Reddell Wingert

t was their first date. No, it was their second date. Stella Riester remembers it one way, her husband, Curt, the other. As they shared the origin story of their romance, the Riesters come to agree: Their second date was Pepe’s on the River with a large group of Winter Texans in tow. Their first date was dinner at a Harlingen Chili’s. “It was free!” remembers Stella. Curt chuckles. It was free…after he flashed his Chili’s manager identification.
The date went well, but afterwards, Curt leaned in for a kiss and completely missed the mark. Embarrassed, he turned on his heel and left.
Determined to try again, he invited Stella to join him and his Uncle Ed and Aunt Delores (Winter Texans from Illinois) at Pepe’s on the River. During their date, Curt says Aunt Delores predicted the two would one day get married.
But it wasn’t only this foursome, says Curt. “I didn’t know there would be

25 Winter Texans with us!”
Pepe’s on the River was a hot spot for Winter Texans in the late 90s and early 2000s, with live music and dancing right on the Rio Grande.
“That date was a full-circle moment for us,” says Stella. The second date lasted all day and the two continued dating for a few months before Curt was set to be transferred to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to open a new Chili’s.
One day before the move, Curt drew Stella close, gave her a kiss, and said, “I think I’m falling for you.” Her response, “Me, too.”
“We weren’t looking for this,” Curt says, “but it just seemed so right.”
He moved to Stillwater and soon invited her to join him. Her job allowed her to work anywhere, so Stella thought, “Why not?”
Curt came back to the Rio Grande Valley, and they loaded up Stella’s things for the move.
But before they left, he got down on
one knee and proposed. “I’d already bought the ring in Oklahoma!” Curt excitedly revealed.
The couple made their way back to South Texas, and the full-circle moment closed as they became fixtures in the Winter Texan community with a home base at the Alamo Country Club.
Stella took up golf, and Curt switched careers, becoming an entertainer for happy hours and dances. “It’s a better quality of life,” Stella says.
The two also work together at Welcome Home RGV. Stella is in the Tours & Travel Division, and Curt is a 55+ community-focused realtor. They serve as guides on tours-like the annual Cruise with Kristi--with close to 300 travelers and work annual events like the Winter Texan Expo, Entertainers Showcase, and Bayside Fiesta.
As a couple, they enjoy exploring local restaurants, spending time at the beach, and traveling. They look forward to being “summer northerners,” maybe spending time on a lake together.
The Riesters celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2025. When asked to share their favorite thing about each other, Curt quickly responded, “Obviously, she’s gorgeous. I was attracted to her immediately.”
But his favorite thing is her laugh. “To see her laugh, to hear it—gosh, it just brings me so much joy.” He also talks about thoughtful little things she does, how just that morning she had heated up a cup for his coffee.
“You’re sweet,” Stella says to Curt after hearing his answer. In turn, she shares a list of kindnesses, how he turns down the bed, loosens water bottles for her…simple acts that show he cares.
Then, speaking directly to him, she gives her response. “Just the way you take care of me.
The way we take care of each other. You’re my best friend.” •

Kansans Fill the Pizza Parlor to Celebrate Kansas Day
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Tuesday January 27, 108 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met for lunch to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. It was so great that 43 Kansans joined the group for the first time.
The event was held at Peter Piper Pizza in Weslaco again this year. As usual, Velma and her team did a great job. There were many positive comments about this
venue, including its central location within the Valley and that each person’s cost was based on his or her order. This event also allowed more time available for getting to know your Kansas neighbors.
Larry Schmitt was the chair of the event and responsible for all communications leading up to the event. Betty Guder took charge of all decorations and the reservation tables. Organizers also thank the volunteers who facilitated the decorations, registration, and distribution of the door prizes. They are also thankful for the attendees who
brought door prizes.
Finally, the organizers commend Rusty Ryerson for taking charge of the MC role and providing fun entertainment. Ryerson had an array of songs and jokes that brought a lot of laughter to the event. (Thanks again, Rusty, for your outstanding performance!)
Plans for the 2027 celebration are in progress. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 26, 2027. If Larry has your contact information, you’re set. If not, please email your contact information to Larrys13@icloud.com. •

Hello Travel Friends
Party with Curt James and Leslie Blasing
Dear Travel Friends,
Calling all fangirls and fanboys. This one’s for you! We’re excited to be hosting a new fun cruise in January 2027 with Curt James and Leslie Blasing. Everything about this trip is new. We’re leaving from a new port, going on a new ship, visiting new destinations, and having a new entertainment experience! Let me fill you in on some of the details.
This travel package includes an eight-night cruise with Margaritaville at Sea on the Sea Islander, as well as a pre-cruise night at Embassy Suites. We’re leaving from Tampa, Florida, which means we’re going to some great new ports: Cozumel, Mexico; Belize; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and George Town, Grand Caymans. We’ll be staying in Tampa the first night and getting everyone to the ship—together--via charter bus.
You may not have heard of Margaritaville at Sea because it’s fairly new. This summer, I took one for the team and went on one of their cruises to check it out for you all. Oh, my goodness! I was both shocked and impressed. The ship is gorgeous, with so many fun bars, live musicians, and incredible food--and a relaxed atmosphere. To make it even better, we’ll have private performances and events with Leslie and Curt every day, including the first night at the hotel.
The pricing on this trip is great, and flights to Tampa out of Harlingen and McAllen are very reasonable. If you love dancing and listening to Leslie and Curt, this one’s for you. Grab your Curt James T-shirt, pack your dancing shoes, and give us a call to book your spot before we fill up. Dates for this trip are January 29 - February 7, 2027.

Hidalgo County Public Health Laboratory Expands Access to Affordable Laboratory Screenings
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The Hidalgo County Public Health Laboratory is now offering affordable laboratory testing services, making essential health screenings more accessible to the community.
Beginning February 2, the Public Health Laboratory is offering a range of affordable screening and testing services, with plans to expand the testing menu based on public needs, including:
Wellness Screens
Basic Diabetes Screens
Complete Diabetes Screens
Thyroid Screens
Respiratory Panels
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Lipid (Cholesterol) Screens
Hemoglobin A1C
Complete Metabolic Panels (CMP)
Urinalysis
Pregnancy Testing (HCG, Urine)
COVID PCR Testing
COVID/Flu Antigen Testing
Strep A PCR Testing
These services are especially helpful for individuals paying out of pocket, including those without health insurance, by offering a lower-cost option for routine laboratory screenings. They can help detect conditions, such as diabetes, high
cholesterol, and thyroid disorders early and allow people to seek appropriate follow-up care with their primary care provider.
“Routine laboratory screenings play an important role in preventive care,” said Dairen Sarmiento Rangel, director of the Hidalgo County Health & Human Services Department. “By the county offering testing at more affordable rates, more people can get the information they need earlier and make informed decisions about their health.”
“As a CAP-accredited public health laboratory, we already have the systems and staff in place to perform these tests,” said Dr. Martha Luna, medical laboratory director of the Hidalgo County Public Health Laboratory. “Expanding these services allows us to use our existing capabilities to provide reliable testing to more people in Hidalgo County.”
Appointments are now available. The public may contact the Hidalgo County Public Health Laboratory to schedule a laboratory screening or learn more about available services. All laboratory testing services are offered at low cost, with pricing starting as low as $10.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling 956292-7765 during regular County business hours. Additional information is available at hchd.org/laboratory. •

Perspectives True Love
By Janette Bridgeman
Many of us have love on our minds, with Valentine’s Day approaching. It got me thinking about what the Bible has to say about love. 1 Corinthians 13 is what we call the “love chapter.” In my own words, this is what it says…If I am an excellent communicator but don’t really love others like God loves me, then I’m just a bunch of noisy nonsense! Even if I have a lot of knowledge and strong faith but don’t truly love people, it all amounts to nothing. I could give away everything I have and even give my life, but doing that without love is meaningless.
So what is real love? In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 amplified version it reads,” Love endures with patience and serenity. Love is kind and thoughtful and is not jealous or envious; love does not brag and is not proud or arrogant. It is not rude; it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked [nor overly sensitive and easily angered]; it does not take into account a wrong endured. It does not rejoice at injustice but rejoices with the truth [when right and truth prevail]. Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening]. Love never fails [it never fades nor ends].” That’s a tall order! But it’s something to work toward if we really want to be Christ-like.
Recently, a friend shared a story with me, and it’s such a good example of true, Christ-like love. He met a man at a
hospice home and greeted him saying, “Hello, brother.”
The man immediately responded, “You must be a Christian.”
“Yes,” my friend replied. “Can I pray for you?”
“Oh no!” the guy said. He did not want to have anything to do with that!
So my friend proceeded to talk to some other people for a while. He sang a couple gospel songs, and after that, the new guy called out to him and said, “I heard you singing.”
My friend said, “Would you like me to sing for you?”
“OK,” he said. So after one song, the guy’s wife and sister were in tears, and the man was speechless. The wife said that though others have tried, no one’s ever been able to get through to him like that. The moral of the story is that when true, Christ-like love was demonstrated, despite the guy’s initial negative response, love softened the man’s heart and caused him to be receptive to the Gospel.
If you want to demonstrate true love, you must recognize love is a choice--not just an emotion--and act lovingly, even when you don’t “feel” it. I encourage you to ask God to transform your heart to genuinely desire and practice true, Christ-like love, whether you feel like it or not. You’ll be surprised at how the choice to demonstrate love--despite whether someone deserves it--will soften others and allow them to receive the true love of God that they most certainly need. •

Lambs Loom Hug-a-Shepherd Week
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
This Valentine’s Day week, there are plenty of sweethearts celebrating. Roses, candies, and hugs, oh my!
At The Lamb’s Loom, we LOVE our Shepherds, so we have declared this week our own holiday: Huga-Shepherd Week! Years ago, when The Lamb’s Loom began, there were only three shepherds. Now, happily, we have over 20 sheps shepherding. As an allvolunteer-run, nonprofit organization, these stitchers get it done, and we are so very grateful!
We call our volunteers shepherds, and these a-mazing ladies are the ones who stitch it all together around here. Their enthusiasm for serving others sets them apart. Everything (every stitch, as it were) somehow goes through a shepherd’s hands. They sort and count our Donation Chest, they make the coffee, they sweep the floors, water the plants…and all that before we open and they greet y’all at the door.
As you enter The Lamb’s Loom, our Sit-n-Knit Room will usually have friends hanging out, stitching and sharing a few stories. There may be a few classes happening, too, and there’s always yarn fun going on. What you do not see are all of the hours they put in to make things happen. There’s shelving to be done and boxes to be put together and mailed out to various mission groups. There is a lot of prep behind all that is going on, and they do it all with a smile and loving
hearts. To borrow a hashtag, #thesegirlsrock
So if you are out and about this week, come and celebrate our holiday with us and hug a shepherd. And while you’re at it, ask how you can join in the yarn fun and stitch it forward with us.
The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Our regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com.

Valentine’s Day Weekend on South Padre Island
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Valentine’s Day is all about romance, togetherness, and memorable moments, and nothing captures that magic quite like Valentine’s Day fireworks on South Padre Island. Whether you’re celebrating the night with your significant other, planning a family-friendly getaway, or turning the holiday into a full weekend escape, South Padre Island offers the views, dining options, and activities to make the occasion truly special.
One of the best parts about Valentine’s Day fireworks on South Padre Island is how accessible they are. On the evening of February 14, gather anywhere in the Entertainment District, where bayfront views and nearby dining make it easy to enjoy a full evening out. At 7:30 p.m., the show begins! Some couples may prefer a quieter stretch of beach for a more intimate experience, bringing a blanket, a picnic, and their favorite beverage to enjoy the sound of the waves and watch the sky light up together. Families, on the other hand, may enjoy staying closer to restaurants and attractions, making it easier to grab dinner before the show or enjoy a sweet treat afterward.
No Valentine’s celebration is complete without a memorable meal. The Island’s vibrant dining scene offers something for everyone, from casual beachfront bites to lively evening spots. And many of them have patios or outdoor areas that make for prime fireworks viewing.
A favorite in the Entertainment District is Louie’s Backyard because of its bayside views and festive atmosphere. Just remember that most restaurants will require reservations for February 14, so plan ahead by checking out visitsouthpadreisland.com/food-drink.
Valentine’s Day fireworks are just the beginning. This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday during a long weekend--with President’s Day on Monday--making it the perfect opportunity to turn your celebration into a full romantic getaway. From sunrise beach walks and sunset views to dolphin cruises and dinner sails, the Island offers endless ways to connect and unwind together.
Families can also take advantage of the Island’s wide range of attractions by enjoying activities like sandcastle-building lessons, animal encounters at Sea Turtle, Inc. or the Birding Center, getting out on the water to fish or try other watersports, and, of course, spending time lying out on the beach, making Valentine’s Day weekend fun for all ages.
This Valentine’s Day weekend, South Padre Island offers so many opportunities to celebrate with your loved ones, island-style.

Homestead and Property Tax Exemptions in Texas: What Winter Texans Should Know
by Carol Kerr Welch, Realtor, Welcome Home Rio Grande Valley
For many Winter Texans and 55+ homeowners, property taxes are one of the biggest ongoing expenses. The good news? Texas offers several valuable homestead and age-related exemptions that can significantly reduce--and in some cases freeze--your property taxes. Here’s what you need to know to take advantage of them.
What Is the Texas Homestead Exemption?
The homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence, lowering your annual property tax bill. It also provides important legal protections for homeowners.
Who Qualifies?
To qualify for a Texas homestead exemption, you must: Own and occupy the home as your primary residence
Live in the home on January 1 of the tax year
Have a Texas driver’s license or state ID showing the property address
Claim only one homestead in Texas (or any other state)
Second homes, rental properties, and vacation homes do not qualify. This is especially important for Winter Texans who split time between states. Texas must be your legal domicile.
Key Benefits for 55+ Homeowners
In addition to the standard homestead exemption, homeowners 55+ may qualify for extra savings:
Standard Homestead Exemption
Reduces taxable value for school and local taxes
Age 65 or Older Exemption
Additional reduction in taxable value
School taxes may be frozen at the amount owed in the year you qualify
Disability Exemption
Available to homeowners with a qualifying disability
Similar benefits to the 65+ exemption
Disabled Veteran and Surviving Spouse Exemptions
Can offer significant or total tax relief, depending on eligibility
Important Deadline
April 30 is the deadline to apply for exemptions for the current tax year. Missed the deadline? You may still apply retroactively in many cases
How to Apply
Applying is straightforward and free:
Complete the Texas Homestead Exemption Application
Submit it to your county appraisal district
Include a copy of your Texas driver’s license or state ID
Be cautious of companies charging to file. This service is always free through the county.
A Note for Winter Texans
If you spend part of the year elsewhere:
Your ID, voter registration, and vehicle registration should match your Texas homestead
You cannot claim a homestead exemption in another state at the same time
Final Thoughts
Homestead and age-related exemptions can save Texas homeowners thousands of dollars over time, especially for retirees on fixed incomes. Taking a few minutes to apply can make a meaningful difference year after year.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify or want help reviewing your situation, it’s worth asking. Many homeowners miss out simply because they didn’t realize they were eligible. •

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward
There’s Room for One More
Today’s Wisdom: Coffee is the best thing in life because it brings people together.
~Unknown
The other day, I was with a group of retired guys enjoying a cup and some good conversation. One of the topics we covered was the art of sexing baby chickens. Afterwords it occurred to me how unique that experience was. Literally, where else in the world could I have sat down and engaged in a conversation on that topic, delivered by a friend who used to run a hatchery business? This is the same guy who introduced me to red-eyed ghosts some time back.
The really neat thing is that while our topics can be interesting and unusual, the experience of having those discussions is not, not for any of the thousands of retired guys who wake up in the morning with a mission of showing up at a local coffee shop, café, gas station, church, or random business to sit down with friends over a cup of coffee. Every morning it happens all over rural America.
The faces change over time and the size and energy of the group wavers as men age out or move away, but the one constant is the group. I know my life is richer because of the two
groups I frequent and the relationships I have developed there. You may not realize this, but many of the topics discussed over the years in this column were spawned in the conversations at those tables.
One of the things I have learned in life is that there is a huge difference in the quality of life among men. Some get up in the morning with no plans and nothing to do. Men were not made for that. It can be tough being alone, morning to evening, with no job to do and nothing but the television for entertainment. Others get up in the morning with purpose and anticipation. They have a destination, something to get shaved and dressed for. They have a place where they are known and welcomed. I often think of the attraction of the Cheers bar, where everyone knows your name.
If you don’t have that place in your life, but it sounds interesting, then you just have to do what most of the rest of us did. We found out where the guys met, we walked in, approached the group and asked, “Is there room for one more?” Odds are the answer will be yes. I’ve seen it happen many times. It’s the same way those other guys all got there. They get it.
I’m just sayin’. •

Valley Regional Medical Center, an HCA Healthcare facility, has announced the acquisition of two Exceptional Emergency Center locations--one in Brownsville and the other in Harlingen--that will operate as departments of Valley Regional Medical Center (under the leadership of, and clinically integrated with, Valley Regional Medical Center). Now operating as ER 24/7 Brownsville (449 E. Alton Gloor Blvd.) and ER 24/7 Harlingen (6902 W. These new locations bring several benefits to the growing Brownsville and Harlingen communities, including:
• 24/7 Emergency Care with no appointment necessary
