We are still on cloud nine after hosting two incredibly successful Winter Texan Expos. Our McAllen show celebrated its 33rd year, and Brownsville will mark its 5th anniversary next season, milestones we’re proud of because these events are all about showing appreciation for our favorite people: YOU, our Winter Texans.
The Expo remains the largest event in Texas dedicated entirely to the Winter Texan community, and this year absolutely delivered. Travel and tours took center stage, with destinations, attractions, and cruise partners from across the state sharing new adventures and ideas. One of the highlights was the addition of travel presentations--covering everything from cruising to dream trips to Ireland and beyond--giving attendees a chance to learn and plan your next getaway.
As always, the best part was reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new friends. A special crowd favorite this year was the GA Barber School, whose team gave more than 200 complimentary haircuts, proof that the Expo is just as much about fun and care as it is about information.
Planning is already underway for next year’s events, and we’d love to hear what you’d like to see. Your ideas help shape the Expo, and we can’t wait to do it all again in 2027.
Winter Texan ExpoTravel-Focused Fun
Story and Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
There was a vibe at the 33rd Annual Winter Texan Expo. It was evident the moment you walked into the McAllen Convention Center. The place was buzzing; it was electric.
The main exhibit hall was alive with conversations, demonstrations, music, comedy acts, and tour and travel presentations.
There was an emphasis on touring and traveling at this year’s Expo, with opportunities spanning not only across the region but throughout Texas and even Ireland, Mexico, and Alaska--not to mention the opportunity to register to win a free cruise and tour tickets. Hundreds took part.
Thousands of people attended Welcome Home RGV’s annual threeday event that took place in McAllen and Brownsville last month, along with over 160 vendors.

Frequent Expo visitors and BFFs are photobombed by a Smile Innovations vendor.
Among the attendees, a group of ladies sporting matching “BFF” T-shirts.
Ruth Sagehorn and Dorothy Jensen of Nebraska, Taunnie Russell of Indiana, and Ranee Holmes of Wisconsin met at Winter Haven RV Park in Pharr 17 years ago. They have been coming to the Expo decked out in their eye-catching, conversation-starter shirts for years.
“We have so much fun here,” says Jensen. “You don’t know how many people we’ve made smile today. That’s our goal!”
While the Expo was all hustle and bustle, the message at the Travel Oklahoma booth was to slow down, specifically on your drive to and from South Texas, to explore this fascinating state.
“There is so much to do,” says Charlie Wallar with the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. In addition to all the material she distributed, Wallar recommends planning your visit with TravelOK.com.
A few suggestions: experience motorcycle rides through the diverse terrain, visit the mansion of an oil tycoon with a scandalous history, tour the Museum of Osteology and the First American Museum, and cruise Route 66.
“Route 66 is big for us this year,” says Wallar. “It’s the 100th anniversary!”
Tours & Travel by Welcome Home RGV also hosted presentations with travel partners, including Collette, coordinating the upcoming Shades of Ireland Tour; and Margaritaville, whose ship, Sea Islander, will be the backdrop for the Party with Curt & Leslie Cruise. (Visit welcomhomergv.com for complete tour details.)
Overall, Welcome Home RGV owner Kristi Collier was very pleased with this year’s Expo: “It was awesome!”

Turn the Page and Take the Challenge With Texas America250 Calling on readers of all ages to read, learn, and serve
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The McAllen Public Library invites readers of all ages to participate in the Texas America250 Reading Challenge, a statewide initiative led by the Texas State Library & Archives Commission and the Texas Center for the Book. The challenge encourages Texans to explore history, learning, and service as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Participants are invited to log 2,500 minutes of qualifying activities, including reading books or listening to audiobooks, attending library programs, volunteering, or visiting Texas state parks. Activities are selfreported, and reading logs are available at the McAllen Public Library.
Those who complete the challenge are eligible to receive a commemorative certificate signed by Governor Greg Abbott. The Texas America250 Reading Challenge runs through December 31, offering a flexible way for individuals and families to participate at their own pace.
The Reading Challenge meets people where they are,” said Kate Horan, library director. “Whether it’s reading a book, attending a program, volunteering, or exploring Texas history, residents can take part in ways that fit their daily lives.”
“America250 is being recognized across Texas, and this Challenge gives
McAllen residents a way to be part of that shared experience,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “It’s an opportunity to reflect on our history while staying connected as a community.”
“As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, communities across Texas are finding meaningful ways to educate, engage, and inspire residents,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “Initiatives like this help connect history to everyday life and remind us that civic awareness and community involvement are essential to a strong future.”
As part of Texas America250, the McAllen Public Library is hosting a traveling exhibit at the Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St., which features historically significant Texas treasures from the State Archives that highlight further exploration of Texas history.
The Texas America250 exhibit is free and open during regular library hours. For more information, email referencelibrarian@mcallen.net or call 956-681-3060. Challenge details are available at tsl.texas.gov/ america250/challenge. •

Our local member artists will showcase diverse works of watercolor at the Upper Valley Art League Gallery in Mission February 7 - 28. Valley Symphony Orchestra Presents StarWars + Four Hands in McAllen and Brownsville
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) invites audiences across the Rio Grande Valley to experience an epic weekend of cinematic music with Star Wars + Four Hands, presented in two separate concerts in two different cities: Friday, February 6, at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, 801 Convention Center Blvd., and Saturday, February 7, at 8 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 E. Taylor St. in Brownsville.
Led by Music Director and Conductor Maestro Peter Dabrowski, the program features the iconic Star Wars Suite, along with beloved themes from Mission: Impossible, Jurassic Park, and The Pink Panther. The concerts will also showcase the North American premiere of a dazzling four-hand piano concerto by Bogdanov, performed by celebrated piano soloists Haysun Kang and Christopher Guzman. Bogdanov will be in attendance for these special performances.
As the VSO continues its celebration of Maestro Dabrowski’s 25th anniversary as conductor and music director, this two-city weekend reflects the orchestra’s long-standing mission of bringing world-class symphonic music to communities throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
“Symphonic music belongs to everyone in our region,” said VSO
Executive Director David Lobel. “By offering performances in multiple cities, we are able to connect with audiences across the Valley and ensure more families have access to professional orchestral music, right here at home.”
For decades, the VSO has expanded its cultural footprint across the Valley, presenting concerts throughout the region and cultivating a strong community tradition of live orchestral music.
This two-night celebration in McAllen and Brownsville exemplifies that commitment by making a major Masterworks program accessible to audiences across the entire Rio Grande Valley.
Tickets are on sale now at valleysymphony.org and in person at participating box offices.
The Brownsville concert is supported by a grant from the Rio Grande Valley Philanthropic Foundation, with additional support from Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation; Atlas, Hall & Rodriguez, LLP; Texas Digestive Specialists Dr. Jason and Rhonda Phillips; and Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Perspectives Don’t Overdo What is Supposed to be Easy
by Paula Key
Have you ever shot yourself in the foot by overdoing what was supposed to be easy? I did just that and had to leave a wonderful job I loved at a special needs elementary school. I really felt the Lord had given me this job. The children at this school had various needs, whether physical or mental, and required specially trained teachers. Those teachers were miracle workers! Whenever they had to be absent from school, it was my job to find a replacement. You could not replace those teachers with just anyone. I had a limited pool of special teachers to choose from, and sometimes it was very hard to find anyone available. I would call and call until I found someone--even after I got home in the evenings. I would not be able to rest until my mission was accomplished. I, apparently, had begun obsessing over it. The desire to complete my assignment and meet the needs of those precious children was overwhelming at times. If I didn’t find a substitute, the teachers would have to double up their classes, which was pretty difficult, considering these were special needs students. Well, after obsessing and being overwhelmed time after time, the stress caused my back to go out when I pushed a table across the room one day. Stress can really hurt you if you don’t deal with what’s stressing you out! I knew I couldn’t
handle the job properly and couldn’t see any way of not stressing out, so I quit. My husband even said I needed to quit. So I did.
Years later, I was at another job I loved and found myself stressing out again. I knew God had led me to this job, but I was overloaded with projects and papers and things I thought I had to do. When I took the situation to my grown children, they showed me ways to get out from under this heavy load. I took their ideas to the Lord and asked if this was His way of helping me, and He assured me it was and showed me exact steps to take. He reminded me, “My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30) I did just what my kids and the Lord said to do, and it all worked out perfectly. I delegated some of my responsibilities to someone the Lord had raised up, and I simplified some of the methods I had been using. I felt like the weight of the world had lifted off of me! My joy came back and the dread left. If I had just talked with someone about my plight with that first job, maybe I could have kept it. So, I want to encourage you not to shoot yourself in the foot. Find counsel. Find help. Look for God to “make a way where there looks to be no way.” (Isaiah 43:19) He’s got the answer and the right people to talk to who will help you. •

Lambs Loom Long Live Show-n-Tell
We know some think show-n-tell is something we all left behind in grade school; you know, when the teacher had you bring in your favorite toy or something to share during science class. Oh, the fun and creativity of children! Well, apparently none of us around here have outgrown that. We have show-n-tell all the time here at The Lamb’s Loom!
It is always so much fun to share our projects with each other. Sometimes it is a gift made for a friend’s birthday or maybe a baby blanket for a little one getting ready to join the family. Other times these show-n-tell projects are headed for our Donation Chest. Hats, blankets, shawls and more are added every day. There is a special shared joy in seeing a project, thinking and praying together about the person who will receive it.
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Tina, who teaches our crochet-pattern-reading class, makes these lovely diamond-pattern scarves and shawls with each class she teaches. She enjoys trying new yarns and watching the colors play out. Then she adds them to the Donation Chest. Karen donated this lovely blanket she made after finishing a crochetalong. The yarn, ReSolve, is so soft and the blanket is just bea-u-ti-ful!
Another kind of yarn we have comes right in the front door from friends who want to help with this ministry but may not know how to knit, crochet, or loom. We often receive donations of yarn from people who found their great grandma’s stash under the bed or someone is moving and just will not have the room to take it with them. Well, our wonderful volunteers separate and sort the yarn before coming up with project ideas. We always promise to honor these yarn donations and
use them in the best way possible! They may be worked up into a blanket, hat or shawl, or used in our classroom to teach and pass on the craft. It’s the gift of giving.
It is always fun to have the delight of playing with yarn to create something, being able to share our finished projects among friends, and then to know that it will go on to bless another. Long live show-n-tell!
We do hope you will come and join in all the yarn fun and show-n-tell times and stitch it forward with us! The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Our regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com. •

Dear Travel Friends,
Hello Travel Friends
Winter Texan Must-Do
Visiting the King Ranch
Everyone has heard of King Ranch, but if you haven’t visited it, you need to get yourself there.
Visiting the King Ranch is basically a rite of passage for Winter Texans. Last month at the Winter Texan Expo, I heard from people excited about going on this tour because it’s been on their list for a while. This fun day trip includes a private lunch, a tour and a museum visit, as well as a stop in Downtown Kingsville to visit the saddle shop and Main Street. The great story of Richard King is filled with risk and reward and is a great example of why there’s an incredible woman behind every successful man.
This is a great way to see how much fun we have on longer trips and to get out of the Valley without having to make an itinerary yourself. Check out available dates and book early because, every year. I get phone calls from disappointed people who wanted to go but didn’t book in time. Check out our website at welcomehomergv.com and book right there. • Sarah
