If you haven’t noticed, at Welcome Home RGV we’ve definitely been bitten by the travel bug. When I was growing up, my dad called me “Go-go-go” because I was always ready for the next adventure, and it honestly didn’t matter where we were going–as long as we were going. Not much has changed, except the way I like to travel. These days, give me a trip that isn’t scheduled within an inch of its life, and I’m a happy camper. Same feeling… slightly better shoes.
The cover story this month hits home for me because there’s nothing quite like escaping the Texas heat in the summer, and when you add the chance to travel with a group-especially when we can meet up with our Winter Texan friends in the off-season–that’s a win, in my book. There’s also something wonderful about packing your bags for a trip that’s already been planned, paid for, and handled. When you leave the worry to us, that’s exactly what you’re signing up for.
Whether you want to join one of our group adventures or plan something on your own, consider letting our Tours and Travel Department take care of the details so you can concentrate on the best part--having a great time!
Scenic Seattle and Setting Sail to Spectacular Alaska Hello Travel
Sarah Denzer, Tour Manager
Dear Travel Friends,
During the summer, I took a group of travelers to Seattle. If you know anything about Seattle, you know the weather can be predictably rainy or cloudy--almost all the time. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for our group. We saw Mt Rainier the entire time we were there, enjoyed perfect 70s with sunny skies, and kept the rain away. That’s how great traveling with Welcome Home RGV is; we even take care of the weather!
Our group had a great mix of down time to explore at their own pace, along with some scheduled group fun. We visited the Space Needle and enjoyed the gorgeous views from up top. There were some shenanigans up top, as well, including dancing, silly photos, and lots of laughs! The glass artwork in Chihuly Garden and Glass was incredible to see in person. A delicious, three-course dinner overlooking the sunset on the bay was the perfect way to end a wonderful day.
“Laughing with new friends and a fun day of activities

made for great memories in Seattle,” one traveler mentioned. Seattle wasn’t the last stop on this summer adventure. Stella and Curt Reister took the group over and escorted them for the cruise portion of this travel package. The group boarded Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas and charged north to Alaska. Needing a coat on a trip with Welcome Home RGV was something new. The incredible views and sometimes chilly temperatures made the experiences unforgettable. This sailing included stops in Juneau and Skagway, as well as in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. They were also able to enjoy the gorgeous scenery as they sailed through the Endicott Arm in Alaska.
Another traveler described the trip as “a trip of a lifetime!” She continued, “I’ve been waiting to go to Alaska my whole life, and I can’t believe I actually made it. I want to travel but get nervous that I will get lost or end up missing out on something. I love traveling in groups like this because it makes the trip even more fun!”
Guests in the group were able to go their own ways and enjoy whatever activities and excursions they were interested in, with the option of dining together at night. This made for fun evening discussion and lively conversation and our travelers became quick friends. Waiters were dancing with our group at dinner, making sure everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves.
“These girls really take care of us and make us feel special. I couldn’t do this type of travel without them,” said Cheryl Matthews, another traveler. We always have surprises along the way for our guests, and I love making sure you know you can trust us with your travel needs. Is Alaska on your bucket list? We’re going to do another Alaska cruise in 2027, so that gives you plenty of time to mark your calendar and plan on it. If you can’t wait that long, give us a call, and we can get you booked on a solo trip next summer.
For more information on Alaska cruising and group cruising options, give us a call at 956-687-5115 and ask for Sarah and Travel Kristy. •

Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers Show
Lambs Loom Welcome, Ladybirds or Ladybugs
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
We are excited to begin another yarnfun year of Make-Along creativity!
This year’s theme has fluttered in just in time; we saw one in The Lamb’s Loom garden just a few days ago.
This year’s theme is in honor of our dear friend, Ann. She absolutely loved these little cuties! These pretty--and fierce--little jewels flit around your yard, eating up all kinds of pests and lending a “hand” to your gardening area by keeping the aphids and others at bay. Born on a mission, they have a huge impact on our world, just like Ann. Welcome, ladybugs!
Did you know there are over 6,000 species of ladybugs worldwide, “only” 500 or so in North America and over 190 recorded in South Texas? We have lots to choose from this year. Ladybugs, as we call them, are also known as ladybirds. They come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. So let’s get started!
We begin this month with the convergent ladybug. They are the most common ladybirds in Texas. They cannot fly in temperatures under 55 degrees. That means they are cuddled up somewhere in your backyard woodpile, waiting for warmer temps. Be sure to keep an eye out.
Thanks to all of you who participate in our annual Make-Alongs. You can check out our website “News” page for updates every
month and join in all year. It is so much fun watching all the wonderful items y’all come up with to add to our Donation Chest throughout the year. Thank you!
It’s been suggested, and we love the idea, to incorporate the ladybug’s host plant color into your creation!
We hope you will come join in all the yarn
fun and stitch it forward with us. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Our regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com • ~ Prayers ‘n Purls, Friends!

What is Welcome Home RGV?
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
If you visit welcomehomergv.com, the first thing you read is, “We connect the dots.” It’s the long-standing motto for this South Texas business, connecting Winter Texans to the Rio Grande Valley and businesses with an audience that changes each winter.
Welcome Home RGV is in its 19th year of operation.
“It’s hard to believe how much has changed, yet so much has stayed the same,” says owner Kristi Collier. The basics are the same: people visiting South Texas to escape cold winters. But the landscape, Collier says, has changed.
“Square dancing has slowly been replaced with line dancing; jam sessions have gone from big band to rock ‘n’ roll; pickleball has somewhat replaced shuffleboard; and what was once a luxury, Wi-Fi, is now a mandatory amenity.”
Real Estate by Welcome Home
Real Estate Broker Carol Welch leads up this division, managing the overall strategy and operations. Welch ensures compliance with real estate laws and ethical standards, along with recruiting, training and coaching agents.
Real estate agent Heather Escobedo and Realtor Curt Riester round out the team. Escobedo enjoys making the home-buying/selling process as smooth as possible for her clients. Riester, a jack of many trades, is motivated to work hard for his clients. “I enjoy that I get to work with people I care about and consider close friends.”
Advertising Sales
Connecting local businesses to the Winter Texan community via Welcome Home RGV products, advertising and vendor opportunities is account manager Chris Leadbetter.
Leadbetter is also a “face” of the company at chamber and city events across the Valley. Her favorite thing is when local businesses and the Winter Texan community converge at the Winter Texan Expo and the Connection
Events
The Winter Texan lifestyle is one of “family” for events manager Anne Marie Martin. Not only does she organize Welcome-Home-hosted events geared toward winter visitors, but her family owns Eldorado Acres RV Park. “I love that my three girls and my husband have grown up around Winter Texans and love tagging along to events and dances.”

WINTER TEXAN
Welcome Home Winter Texan
Eleven years ago, Collier started a seasonal weekly newspaper distributed in RV parks, resorts, chambers of commerce, and tourist centers and available online. Running this operation, from creating new ads for clients to ensuring correct placement for all content and coordinating delivery, is Production Manager Amie Gray.
When it comes to content, the grammar buck stops with Editor Chris Ardis, who has been with the company for over a decade. Ardis reviews each contribution, helping writers present their best written work.
“Sharing all the stories of the people and places that make our RGV unique,” motivates Gray, as well as Editor Chris Ardis and myself, as the lead writer.
Hats, T-shirts, pens, coffee mugs, tape measurers--you name it--Elizabeth Seal, Cristi Klostermann, and Sabina Adames can put your brand on it. “I love when clients are over-the-top happy with the items,” says Seal. “Thankfully, it happens often, and it feeds my people-pleasing personality.”
Tours & Travel by Welcome Home
Day trips, overnight excursions, and international getaways--this division has got you covered, and you do not have to be a winter visitor to take advantage. Travel/Cruise Manager Kristy Meyer and Tour Manager Sarah Denzer, assisted by Stella Riester, tirelessly put together adventures, paying close attention to detail. Their motivation: very happy travelers!
A Family Business
Collier founded this business to have flexibility to spend time with her daughter, Kirby, who has since grown up and joined the Welcome Home RGV Team, a team, Collier says, that cares about the Winter Texan community. “They love what they do, and it shows.”
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished,” says Collier. “It’s fun to take a step back and look at it all from a bird’s eye view, but it’s also fun to think of all that lies ahead for us and ways we will serve this community for years to come.”

IMAS Presents Piñatabstract by Josué Rawmirez
A multimedia celebration of the piñata tradition
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Adynamic and bold exploration of the piñata tradition is coming to McAllen this February. The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) presents Piñatabstract, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Josué Rawmirez, running from February 14 through July 26. The exhibit offers a unique presentation of the piñata through craft, performance, and new media, transforming a beloved cultural icon into innovative works of art. Piñatabstract is supported by an Arts Respond grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Piñatabstract features sculptural installations, wearable art, recycled paper, video, and ceramic works, inviting visitors to experience the piñata as both a cultural icon and an artistic object. Rawmirez celebrates traditional techniques while expanding the meanings behind the practice, encouraging audiences to rethink the piñata’s place in our shared imagination.
Josué Rawmirez is a multidisciplinary artist from Ciudad Mante, Tamaulipas, currently practicing in Esto’k Gna land (the Rio Grande
Valley along the Texas-Mexico border). Drawing inspiration from local landscapes and everyday cultural practices, Rawmirez reinterprets crafts and traditions to explore identity, challenge historical norms, and foster a shared visual language across communities.
Rawmirez guided visitors at IMAS in October through a group mural build, piñatafying a depiction of traditional altar icons used to commemorate Día de los Muertos. This piñata mural is currently on display at IMAS.
An opening reception for Piñatabstract February 13 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. will be followed by a special program, IMAS After Dark from 7 – 9 p.m., offering an evening of art, music, and community engagement.

Perspectives There’s Purpose in Patience
by Sheila Freeland
Here are some words of encouragement for you… I’ve been thinking about patience, that word we often avoid and are told not to pray for. The definition of the word is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. How many of us can say we are an example of patience all the time? Just wait in a traffic jam and see where you and others stand with patience. We live in a time when things are instant. We don’t seem to “need” patience, according to the world’s standards, even though the New Testament tells us that patience is a very important quality. For example, in Hebrews 10:36, “For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise” and in Luke 21:19, “In your patience possess ye your souls.”
When I think about examples of patience that most may not recognize, three biblical stories come to mind, the first being about the sycamore tree and Zacchaeus in Luke 19. Zacchaeus was not a tall man, so he needed to climb a tree to see Jesus over the crowd. The second example is the donkey and Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem in Matthew 21. Jesus rode in on a donkey. The last example
is the story about young David and the brook stones in 1 Samuel 17. David chose three stones from the brook and used one to sling and kill Goliath, the giant.
The sycamore tree started as a tiny seed and had to grow for many years to be tall enough for Zacchaeus to see Jesus. The donkey, with her colt, had to mature, which took at least two years, so she could be strong enough to carry our Savior into the city. And the stones from the brook that David chose to kill Goliath had to be smoothed by many years of rushing water and tumbling to be perfect for their purpose to slay a giant.
So, if you’re waiting, growing, facing struggles, tumbling, or just going through everyday life, remember that you need to endure and be patient because there’s a reason. You might be the one growing, so--in the right time--you will lift others up so they, too, can see Jesus; be the instrument used to help someone reach their triumphal entry; or be the one who goes to battle and helps take down the enemy.
Be patient because there’s a purpose in the patience. Dios le bendiga (God Bless You) •

Smart Downsizing After 55: A Guide to Simplifying Your Life and Finding Freedom
Brought to you by Real Estate by Welcome Home
For many adults 55 and older, downsizing isn’t just about moving into a smaller home; it’s about creating a lifestyle that better fits your needs, goals, and dreams. Whether you’re retiring, becoming empty nesters, or simply feeling ready to let go of the excess, downsizing can bring clarity, freedom, and peace of mind.
At Real Estate by Welcome Home, we specialize in helping clients in 55+ communities navigate this exciting (and sometimes emotional) transition with confidence. Here’s how to approach downsizing with a clear plan--and the support you deserve:
1. Start With Your “Why”
Before you even begin packing, take a moment to consider why you’re ready to downsize. Common reasons include:
• Less home maintenance
• Lower monthly expenses
• More time and freedom to travel
• Moving closer to family or into a 55+ community
• Simplifying life to focus on what matters most Your “why” will help guide your decisions and keep you motivated.
2. Take it Step by Step
Downsizing doesn’t happen in one weekend, especially if you’ve lived in your home for decades. Give yourself time to move through the process, one room or category at a time.
Helpful tip: Start with areas that don’t carry much sentimental weight (like the laundry room or guest bath). You’ll build momentum before tackling emotional items.
3. Declutter With Purpose
Use the classic four-box method:
• Keep
• Donate
• Sell
• Discard
This system keeps you focused and helps you make quick, clear decisions. We often recommend donating gently used items to local charities, giving them new life and purpose.
4. Plan for the New Space
One of the most common downsizing mistakes is bringing too much to the new home. If you’re moving into a smaller house, condo, RV, or 55+ community, measure everything and make sure your belongings will comfortably fit.
Our team at Real Estate by Welcome Home can help you access floor plans, walk through potential homes, and envision how your favorite pieces will transition into your next space.
5. Let Go Without Guilt
It’s hard to say goodbye to items that hold memories, but remember--the memories aren’t in the stuff, they’re in you. Keep a few treasures that bring you joy and consider taking photos of sentimental items you’re ready to release.
If your kids or grandkids aren’t interested in heirlooms, that’s OK. Your legacy isn’t tied to things; it’s tied to love, time, and experience.
6.
Go Digital Where You Can
Reduce paperwork and clutter by scanning important documents, old photos, or recipes. You’ll lighten your load and gain peace of mind knowing everything’s backed up and easy to find.
7. Sell or Donate With Confidence
Garage sales, online marketplaces, and estate sale services are all great ways to pass items along and earn a little extra cash. If you’d rather donate, we can connect you with local organizations in need.
8. Don’t Go It Alone
You don’t have to figure this all out on your own. Whether you need help coordinating movers, staging your current home for sale, or finding the right-sized new home, we’re here for you every step of the way.
At Real Estate by Welcome Home, we understand the unique needs of clients 55+. We’ve helped hundreds of individuals and couples make smooth transitions into homes and communities that fit their lifestyle and goals.
9.
Celebrate Freedom Ahead
Downsizing is not about giving things up; it’s about gaining something greater: time, simplicity, and freedom. The next chapter is yours to design.
Let’s Make Downsizing Simple, Supportive, and Successful
If you’re thinking about downsizing in South Texas or beyond, our team at Real Estate by Welcome Home is ready to help. Trio of Brothers Continues the Goldwing Express Legacy
Goldwing Express is a bluegrass, country, and gospel band, originally from Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The band consisted of three brothers and their dad--until their beloved dad passed away in 2025. Their mother, Juanita, who was a full-blooded Native American Creek Indian, named the band Goldwing Express after their hobby of riding Goldwing motorcycles in the 80s.
Bob Baldridge (1945-2025), the patriarch of the family, played mandolin and sung lead for the group. He also provided a lot of the Goldwing Express comedy routines. His music career began in the early 70s with his brothers and sister. The family would gather at their grandmother’s house and have all-day singing sessions. Bob eventually wanted to form his own family band and did so with his and Juanita’s sons, Paul, Steven, and Shawn.
When their children were young, Juanita and Bob decided to buy the boys instruments. Four decades later, they are still entertaining. A segment of their performance is often dedicated to their Indian heritage, and they wear Native American headdresses to represent their Creek Indian tribe.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Goldwing Express was nominated for Bluegrass Entertaining Band of the Year by SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) from 2003 – 2006. In South Texas, the group won a Valley Star Award in the Rio Grande Valley four times.
Catch Goldwing Express Wednesday, January 21, at 11:30 a.m. at the Winter Texan Expo in McAllen! •
