The Pumpkin Patch Celebrates Community Tradition, Fall Fun YORK First Parish Church in York is celebrating the 11th anniversary of its partnership with Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers. The effort draws visitors to a classic New England fall tradition while generating income for Navajo Nation families in Farmington, NM. Proceeds also support families in need locally and abroad. This partnership is distinguished by the principles on which Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers was founded. Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers began in 1974 in North Carolina “...with three acres of pumpkins and a partnership with one church. There was no contract, no legal proceedings… just a

handshake and trust in each other.” Trust remains the foundation of Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers partnerships. In 1989, the organization moved farming operations to New Mexico, where ever year members of the Navajo Nation plant and harvest about two square miles of pumpkins. The farm employs a seasonal workforce of more than 700 Navajo men, women and children. The impact on the York community has been lasting, with the pumpkin patch becoming a gathering place for all ages. Here, people share stories of joy and sorrow, despair and hope, while searching for just the right pumpkin. Parents and grandparents capture

memories as children’s faces light up at the sight of the pumpkins. Visitors linger in the patch, often stopping to talk and discovering there is more that unites than divides. Children gather at craft tables to decorate their pumpkins, working side by side and encouraging one another. Grade schoolers look forward to visiting the patch each year, learning about the pumpkins’ journey from field to patch before choosing one of their own. Pumpkin passion isn’t limited to the young. A few years ago, a couple celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary noticed a young pair walking See PUMPKINS on page 11 . . .

More than just a dining spot, it was a place of cherished memories – friends, families, and fun, all paired with exceptional food.

Ask anyone who lived in or visited the region, and they’d share a story about Warren’s Lobster House, a testament to its deep community roots. Warren’s Seafood & More carries forward that legacy.
