Caring Community Cuisine: A Purpose-Driven Mission By Karen Arel, Staff Writer A diagnosis of cancer often comes without warning. As the reality sets in, specialists are seen, and a plan of action to fight the disease is put into place. As the days drag on, the patient may become tired, overwhelmed, and unable to keep up with one of the most important daily tasks – eating a nutritious, balanced meal to provide strength and nourishment to a tired, sick body. Sometimes, out of nowhere, a delivery of meals arrives – just heat
and eat. Fortunately for some, a meal train has been set up by family and/ or friends. In some communities, there may be another resource. This story is about one such resource – and the volunteers of Caring Community Cuisine. Co-founders Jonathan Cartwright and Selena Roy joined forces and talents to open a restaurant where the net proceeds from meals served are combined with donations to directly fund the preparation and delivery of meals – at no cost – to members of their com-
munity facing cancer. Both realized that although they cannot find a cure for cancer, they can use their cooking expertise to help both the patient and their family. Cartwright shared that Laurence “Laurie” Bongiorno was the spark that ignited his decision to open a nonprofit, mission-based restaurant. Bongiorno had been stricken with cancer that eventually took his life at age 53. He fought hard but did not win the battle.
