The Breuer family’s third generation, Tracey and Stuart Hobbs, is still doing business from Wilson Street, now trading as Total Tools Horsham. In Breuers beginning, Les Breuer moved to Horsham from Quantong in 1946 and owned various businesses including a fruit shop, and services including taxi, freight, and newspaper and Olympic tyre distribution,

operating from 96 Wilson Street, which now houses Wimmera Bolts and Fasteners. In 1961, Les’s son Brian joined his parents in the business to become L J Breuer and Co, and the following year established a new retail premise at 29 Wilson Street, where they continued their distribution business, expanding with a retail business and a range of workshop products. Mr Hobbs said the shop had been extended and changed many times over the years. “Out on the floor you can see each version of the building – it’s quite clear in the concrete where each bit has expanded to,” he said.

“We expanded the shop again a couple of years ago to get us more retail space, but we’re out of expansion space now – we have even built over the back car park – but we are looking forward to keeping on growing.” Every year stock is increased based on both national and local demand. “As an independently-owned franchise party, we get about 70 per cent of the stock based on best practice around Australia, and the other 30 per cent is the flair of the owner of the store, so I can tailor that to suit what our clientele is here,” Mr Hobbs said.

“We can also order a lot of things in – the website has over 100,000 products. “We have 14,000-plus line items in the store, which is a lot for a small community. We call ourselves a small community within the Total Tools group, we are probably third or fourth smallest now, we were the smallest one when we opened as Total Tools. “We were a bit of an outlier in the Total Tools group initially, they were just a big box inside Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and so on, so they took a bit of a gamble with us. “Since then, they’ve expanded into other rural areas, and

obviously see that as a good growth strategy.” Total Tools’ pricing is cuttingedge, the digital ticketing system updating up to four times a day. “It gives us the ability to be on the money as far as pricing goes, which is a big thing,” Mr Hobbs said. “I like to think we provide a good service for the area – it’s a bit the same as BCF store coming into Horsham, whilst it puts a bit of pressure on some other local businesses selling similar things, same as what we do, it keeps everyone honest and pricing good for the customer and gives a bigger selection in town.” • Continued page 2
