MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH AS MAN IS ARRESTED OVER PREGNANT WOMAN’S 2017 MURDER ustice is a step closer for the family of Hayley McClenahan-Ernst after her accused killer was arrested and charged by police almost a decade after she died in her Kingswood home. 30-year-old Max Spencer, McClenahan-Ernst’s former partner, was charged with murder on Tuesday. The development followed a renewed public appeal last month involving police and her family.
On Sunday, May 21, 2017, police were called to a home on Derby Street at about 12.15am, where they found the 21-year-old McClenahan-Ernst unresponsive. NSW Ambulance paramedics rendered assistance, but tragically she died at the scene. It was later revealed she was pregnant. The circumstances around her death were deemed suspicious by police at the time and extensive investigations began under Strike Force Fielding. In 2025 a coronial investigation
into her death was suspended, and the matter was referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. It is understood police interviewed new witnesses in the lead-up to their fresh public appeal last month. Spencer was arrested at Bucca, north of Coffs Harbour, just before 7.30am on Tuesday. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was formally charged with murder. Hayley McClenahan-Ernst.
