HEALTH The Experts

INDEPENDENCE STARTS FROM THE GROUND UP A

PRAISE KHIN OnePointHealth 4732 5188

s we age, maintaining independence becomes one of the most important aspects of living a healthy and fulfilling life. While we often focus on maintaining our heart, joints and general fitness, our feet are sometimes overlooked despite playing a vital role in keeping us mobile. Our feet carry us through millions of steps over our lifetime. However, natural ageing can affect foot health, including changes to skin elasticity, reduced cushioning under the feet, thicker toenails, joint stiffness and increased risk of conditions such as arthritis and deformities. These changes can impact comfort, balance and the ability to stay active. Foot pain should not be considered a normal part of ageing. Many common foot problems can be successfully managed with early assessment and appropriate care. Issues such as painful corns, calluses, thickened nails, bunions and arthritis can affect

the western weekender » Thursday, August 27, 2026

the way we walk and may lead to reduced activity levels if left untreated. Healthy feet also play an important role in falls prevention. Changes in foot strength, sensation, flexibility and balance can affect how we move and increase the risk of trips and falls. Wearing appropriate footwear with good support, a secure fit and adequate grip is an important step in maintaining stability and confidence when walking. Simple daily habits can help protect your feet as you age: 1. Check your feet regularly for changes such as cuts, swelling, skin breakdown or changes in colour. 2. Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes that provide stability and protection. 3. Keep toenails and skin well maintained. 4. Seek professional advice if you notice persistent pain, changes in sensation or difficulty managing your own foot care.

For people with diabetes or reduced sensation in their feet, regular foot assessments are particularly important, as nerve and circulation changes can increase the risk of unnoticed injuries and complications. A podiatrist can assess your foot health, identify potential risks and provide personalised advice to help you remain active

and independent. Foot care is not just about treating problems when they occur; it’s about prevention, maintaining mobility and supporting the activities that make life enjoyable. Healthy ageing starts from the ground up. By looking after your feet today, you can continue taking confident steps towards a more independent future.

PET HEALTH

SAFE SPRING GARDENING A

KELLIE TICKNER Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4736 2027

s spring approaches, many of us are preparing to get back into the garden. Warmer weather brings new growth, flowering plants and more time outdoors with our pets. However, from a veterinary perspective, spring gardening also brings a number of preventable risks that every pet owner should be aware of. One of the most serious is snail and slug bait poisoning. Dogs are particularly attracted to some snail baits, which can resemble food. Ingestion can cause rapid and potentially life-threatening toxicity, with signs including agitation, tremors, seizures, increased body temperature and, in severe cases, death. If you suspect your pet has ingested snail bait, seek veterinary advice immediately rather than waiting for symptoms to develop. Spring is also the time when many gardens are filled with new plants. Unfortunately, some of the most attractive plants can be highly toxic. Lilies are particularly dangerous to cats, with exposure to even small amounts of the plant or pollen potentially resulting in acute kidney failure. Sago palms and Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow plants can also cause significant poisoning. Before purchasing or planting anything new, check whether it is considered safe for dogs and cats. Garden fruit can present another hidden hazard. Pets may be attracted to fallen fruit, seeds and stones, particularly as they become more active outdoors. Stones from fruits such as peaches, plums and mangoes can cause gastrointestinal obstruction if swallowed.

Regularly clearing fallen fruit from the garden can help reduce these risks. Mulch and compost deserve consideration too. Dogs may dig through freshly prepared garden beds or eat mulch, particularly if they are prone to scavenging. Some organic materials can contain moulds or other substances that cause gastrointestinal illness or neurological signs. Avoid allowing pets to eat mulch or compost and take care when selecting products for your garden. Untreated

natural wood or bark products are generally preferable to materials containing additives or potentially toxic substances. Fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides should also be treated as potential poisons. Store all garden chemicals securely and follow application instructions carefully. Keep pets away from treated areas for the recommended period and prevent them from licking plants, soil or surfaces that have recently been treated. Fertiliser ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort, while some products can cause more serious toxicity. Finally, don’t overlook garden machinery. Lawnmowers and whipper snippers can cause severe injuries to pets that suddenly run into their path, while stones and other debris can be projected at considerable speed. Pets should be safely confined indoors while machinery is being used, and gardening equipment should be stored securely when finished. If your pet does ingest a plant, chemical, bait or unknown substance, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian promptly. Early assessment and treatment can make a significant difference when dealing with poisoning. A pet-safe garden doesn’t require giving up your gardening plans – it simply means planning with your four-legged family members in mind. LOAN LOWDOWN The Experts

AN INVESTOR’S BEST FRIEND? QUITE POSSIBLY! F

STEVEN KORNER The Finance Korner thefinancekorner.com.au

or most of the past two years, western Sydney’s property market has felt like a train that never slows down. Recent figures tell a different story: Sydney growth has flattened compared to earlier double-digit gains, and the Reserve Bank’s recent rate rises have cooled buyer urgency across the city, Penrith included. For owner-occupiers, that’s unsettling. For investors playing the long game, it could be one of the better entry points in years. What’s actually happening This isn’t a repeat of 2022’s sharp correction. Most other capital cities are still recording modest growth. Locally it’s more of a stall than a slide: fewer bidders at auction, longer days on market, and vendors more willing to negotiate. Higher borrowing costs and stretched affordability after years of strong growth are the main drivers. For a market that’s run hot for years, softer conditions are arguably healthier

and they change the maths for anyone buying to invest rather than to live in.

first. Knowing their borrowing capacity, understanding how lenders treat rental income, and having pre-approval ready. Correct loan structuring, from offsets to splits for future purchases, can meaningfully affect portfolio performance, and any purchase should be stress-tested against further rate movement.

Why investors think differently An owner-occupier is thinking about next year; an investor should be thinking about the next decade. Cycles that feel significant in the moment tend to average out over a ten-to-fifteen-year hold. Investors who bought into Western Sydney during previous soft patches, including after 2022, have generally been rewarded once conditions normalised. Less competition also means more negotiating room and less emotional bidding. What this means practically • Negotiating room: fewer competing offers means more scope on price and terms. • Rental demand hasn’t softened: tight vacancy rates and population growth keep supporting rents even as sale prices plateau.

• Borrowing capacity: with the cash rate higher than two years ago, serviceability is tighter, so structuring finance properly before you start looking matters more than ever. The role finance plays Investors who move confidently in a cooling market have usually done their finance homework

A word of caution None of this guarantees future growth, and values can move either way. Weigh your own financial position and goals, and seek independent financial and tax advice alongside your finance conversation. The bottom line Population growth, infrastructure investment, and chronic undersupply haven’t gone away. For investors with a long horizon and their finance properly structured, conditions like these have historically been more opportunity than obstacle.

Something deeper is shifting within you this week. Old emotions, fears or patterns may surface, but only because you’re finally ready to release them. Try not to resist the process. Financial matters involving shared expenses or commitments may also need attention. Clarity comes when you stop avoiding what feels uncomfortable and begin trusting yourself to handle it.

Relationships become your mirror this week, showing you where connections feel balanced and where you may have been giving too much. Honest communication can strengthen an important bond, but boundaries may be necessary elsewhere. Trust how people make you feel rather than becoming caught up in their words. The right relationships bring peace.

This week brings a sense that things are finally beginning to move again. Something you’ve been waiting on may gain momentum, giving you the confidence to make your next move. Be mindful of rushing simply because you’re excited. A conversation around work or money could reveal an unexpected opportunity. Trust yourself, but give important decisions time.

You’re being encouraged to make more room for joy this week. Responsibilities will always be there, but life shouldn’t become one long list of things that need doing. Creativity, romance and connection are highlighted, making this a beautiful time to reconnect with someone or something you love. Follow what makes you feel lighter.

Home, family and your emotional foundations come into focus this week. You may feel inspired to make changes to your surroundings or finally address something that has been sitting beneath the surface. Honest conversations can bring surprising relief. Don’t feel responsible for keeping everyone else happy. Your needs deserve a place at the table too.

Your intuition and communication work beautifully together this week. If there’s something you’ve wanted to say, now may be the time to speak from the heart. An unexpected message, meeting or conversation could bring clarity around a situation that has confused you. Pay attention to repeating signs and synchronicities too. The answers may arrive differently than you expect.

Money, security and self-worth are highlighted this week, encouraging you to look closely at what you value. An opportunity to improve your financial position could emerge, but avoid making decisions simply to prove something to others. You have nothing to prove. Recognising your own worth will naturally change what you’re willing to accept in every area of your life.

This is your time to reset. Your season brings renewed motivation and clarity around what you want the months ahead to look like. Set intentions, make plans and start taking those small practical steps you’re so good at. Just don’t allow perfectionism to delay your progress. Something new doesn’t need to be flawless; it simply needs somewhere to begin.

Your energy may be asking for more rest and reflection than usual. Instead of pushing through, listen to what your body and intuition are telling you. Something from the past may come back into your thoughts, offering an opportunity for closure or a different perspective. Protect your peace this week. Not everything deserves a reaction or your precious energy.

Your social world is highlighted, and the right connection could prove surprisingly valuable. Be open to invitations, introductions and conversations with people outside your usual circle. Someone may inspire you to revisit a dream you had previously put aside. There’s also strength in allowing others to support you. You don’t always have to figure everything out alone.

Your ambitions are growing, and you may find yourself thinking more seriously about what you want professionally or personally. An opportunity to step forward, lead or be recognised could present itself. Don’t shrink yourself because you’re worried about what others might think. You’ve earned the right to take up space. Let your experience speak for itself.

A change of scenery or perspective could be exactly what you need. You’ve been focused on responsibilities for long enough, and this week encourages you to look beyond your usual routine. Travel, learning or exploring a new idea could bring unexpected inspiration. Give yourself permission to dream bigger. Your next chapter may require you to think differently.

HIDDEN GEM IN VICTORIA W

hen you think of Melbourne you think of the CBD, it’s OK, we all do it. While the outer suburbs might not be on any postcards, I’m here to say you should give them a chance next time you book a flight down south. For your next getaway I’d suggest giving Novotel Melbourne Preston a go. Found in the vibrant inner north of Melbourne, this hotel gives its patrons more than just a place to rest your feet. I recently tried their Stay and Play Package, which made for the perfect escape in Melbourne. The package includes a guaranteed room upgrade, daily breakfast, discounted parking as well as an in-room welcome pack. The package also includes a drink for two at The Stampton (more on this later!), a golf simulator experience at Big Swing Golf, a voucher toward a beauty service at the hotel’s Salon Identity, a voucher for a tasting paddle at local craft brewer Tallboy & Moose, two drinks on the house at Jamsheed Wines, a wellness credit at the nearby Urban Sanctuary, and a voucher for artisan chocolates at Chocilo.

The rooms offer a beautiful view of the city.

“THE HOTEL HAD A LUXURIOUS AND MODERN FEEL”

There is so much included in the package that it makes any stay at Novotel Melbourne Preston feel decadent. I truly felt like a VIP. After a flight it was so nice to see the trip to the hotel from the airport was only 20 minutes. From the moment I arrived, the hotel had a luxurious and modern feel. Check-in was straightforward and the staff were friendly and professional, which immediately set the tone for a relaxing stay. The hotel itself is contemporary, with comfortable common areas and everything you would expect from a modern Novotel property. The room was comfortable and provided a great place to unwind after a day

The Stampton is good for casual drinks or fine dining.

out. There was plenty of space to relax, and the bed was particularly welcoming after a busy day. The room had all the essentials needed for a short getaway, including modern amenities and a clean, comfortable bathroom. I also appreciated the balcony that gave a beautiful view of the city lights of Melbourne’s CBD at night – a few glasses of wine were had out there! The highlight of the stay was of course the Stay and Play Package. It took the stress of planning things to do out of my trip. I also got to try things I never would have thought of on my own like the golf simulator. Let’s just say that I didn’t miss a calling in golf! The package showed me the charm and character of Preston in a way I’m not sure I would have managed on my own. Another thing I enjoyed about my stay was the convenience of enjoying a high-quality meal so close to where I was staying. Being able to enjoy food and drinks without having to travel far was ideal, particularly after a day of activities. The in-house restaurant The Stampton is exactly what a hotel restaurant should be. There was a cosy area for patrons to enjoy casual pre-dinner drinks before moving into the more formal dining area. I had the cheesy garlic bread, Al Gamberi Risotto with Prawn and an Old Fashioned, which were all delicious. I enjoyed my experience so much I went back the next evening to try even more of

the menu. It was a true testament to the staff! If you’re planning a Melbourne escape and want something a little different from a standard hotel stay, I’d definitely consider Novotel Melbourne Preston’s Stay and Play package. For a short getaway, it ticks a lot of boxes and is an easy option for anyone looking to combine accommodation with a little entertainment and relaxation.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to The solutions will be published here in the next issue. see how ‘straights’ are formed.
