FEATURE STORY Western Property
FILM ICON PUTS SPECIAL HOME ON THE MARKET B
ruce Beresford, an icon of Australian cinema, and his wife – author Virginia Duigan, are selling their Blue Mountains home of 19 years at 32 Backhouse Street, Wentworth Falls. Beresford has directed more than 30 feature films, including ‘Breaker Morant’ (1980), the multi-Oscar winner ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ (1989), and ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ (2009). He has a strong connection to the Blue Mountains, having lived in Springwood for much of his childhood. “My wife and I adore the mountains, and spent quite a lot of time in Wentworth Falls over the years,” said Beresford. “We’ve enjoyed dozens of the superb bushwalks in the area – up as far as Mount Victoria and down as far as Springwood. “We love winter in the mountains, but it does get cold so the first step we took was installing central heating. Recently, a lot of woodwork was replaced – and done so skilfully it’s not detectable.”
Not surprisingly, the cottage at 32 Backhouse Street, Wentworth Falls, which has been listed for sale by Sarah Burnett and Brenton Ebzery from Raine & Horne Wentworth Falls | Leura, features movie memorabilia, providing a wonderful connection to Beresford’s extraordinary filmmaking career. Set on a sunny north-facing 673-square-metre corner block, the property offers a low-maintenance lifestyle with valuable future potential. The generous site, which enjoys potential dual street access via Mulheran Lane, provides more than enough space for an additional granny flat or studio, subject to council approval. Now aged 86, Beresford is focusing on his homes in Sydney and London. Sarah Burnett, Co-Principal, Raine & Horne Wentworth Falls | Leura, said that over the past 19 years, Beresford and Duigan have lovingly cared for and maintained the cottage, creating a property that reflects both the character of Wentworth Falls and their appreciation for
the area’s natural beauty. “The creative community has always been an important part of Wentworth Falls’ identity,” Burnett said. “Artists, writers, musicians and film makers have been drawn here by the stunning natural environment, slower pace of life and strong sense of community. “This creative influence is reflected in the local galleries, markets, cafés and community events, giving the village a welcoming and authentic character.
“THE CREATIVE COMMUNITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF WENTWORTH FALLS’ IDENTITY”
“While we’re now seeing more professionals and young families moving into the area, particularly with the flexibility of working from home, I don’t believe that creative spirit is disappearing. Instead, the community is becoming more diverse while still retaining the qualities that have made Wentworth Falls such a special place to live.” Wentworth Falls offers a unique blend of natural beauty, convenience and community. It is home to some of the region’s most iconic scenery, including the Wentworth Falls walking tracks and waterfalls, while also providing exceptional amenities, including a vibrant village centre, schools and the convenience of rail access to Sydney. “Compared with some neighbouring suburbs, Wentworth Falls has a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, making it particularly appealing to families, retirees and professionals seeking space and tranquility,” Burnett said. “It also offers a diverse range of properties, from charming mountain cottages to substantial family homes on generous blocks, giving buyers plenty of choice while still enjoying everything that makes the Blue Mountains so unique.” 32 Backhouse Street, Wentworth Falls can be inspected by contacting Raine & Horne Wentworth Falls | Leura’s Sarah Burnett 0415 555 708 or Brenton Ebzery 0410 613 450.

HEALTH The Experts
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHOES FOR YOUR FEET W
PRAISE KHIN OnePointHealth 4732 5188
hen purchasing a new pair of shoes, comfort is often the first thing we notice. While a comfortable shoe is important, the right footwear should also support your feet, improve stability and help reduce the risk of injury. Whether you’re walking the dog, standing at work or exercising, your footwear plays a vital role in distributing pressure across your feet and lower limbs. Shoes that are poorly fitted, lack support or are excessively worn can contribute to foot pain and may place extra strain on the ankles, knees and hips. One of the biggest misconceptions is that there is a “best shoe” for everyone. In reality, the ideal shoe depends on your foot shape, the activity you’re doing and any underlying medical conditions. For example, running shoes are designed for forward movement and shock absorption, whereas court sports such as tennis or netball require greater side-toside stability. Wearing the wrong
type of shoe for your chosen activity may increase your risk of discomfort or injury. When shopping for footwear, look for a shoe with a firm heel counter (the back of the shoe), a sole that bends at the ball of the foot rather than through the middle, adequate width and depth for your toes, and a secure fastening such as laces or Velcro. Your heel should feel stable while walking, and there should be
approximately a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. It’s also important to recognise when your shoes have reached the end of their lifespan. Flattened cushioning, uneven tread wear or a shoe that twists easily are signs that it may no longer be providing adequate support. Replacing worn footwear can often prevent aches and pains before they develop into more
persistent problems. If you’re experiencing ongoing foot pain, don’t simply change your shoes and hope for the best. A podiatrist can assess your feet, your walking pattern and your footwear to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Choosing the right shoe is one of the simplest investments you can make not only for your feet, but for your overall mobility and quality of life.

PET HEALTH The Experts
KEEPING CATS SAFE AND REDUCING THE NUMBERS A
KELLIE TICKNER Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4736 2027
ustralia is a nation of animal lovers, with cats firmly holding their place as one of our most popular pets. There are an estimated 5.3 million owned cats across the country, with around one-third of Australian households sharing their home with a feline companion. Unfortunately, alongside these much-loved pets is a growing population of cats without a clearly defined owner. Estimates suggest there may be between 700,000 and two million unowned or semiowned cats living around our towns and cities. Some are friendly and rely on people for food, while others have little regular human contact. Regardless of where they fit on the spectrum, uncontrolled cat populations can grow quickly. Cats are incredibly efficient breeders. A female cat can have two to three litters in a single year, with each litter averaging around four to six kittens. This means just one undesexed female cat can potentially produce between 15 and 30 kittens in a year. When those kittens are also left undesexed, the population can quickly grow beyond what homes, shelters and rescue organisations can manage. Roaming owned cats may breed with other roaming, stray or unowned cats, while the
abandonment of unwanted cats and kittens adds further pressure to animal welfare organisations and local communities. Even well-meaning people can unintentionally contribute to the problem. Regularly feeding a stray cat without arranging desexing or a longer-term management plan can allow more cats to survive and breed in the same area, resulting in a growing colony over time. One of the most important steps cat owners can take is to desex their pets. Early desexing helps prevent unwanted litters and removes the possibility of an accidental pregnancy adding even more kittens to an already overwhelming population. Keeping cats safely contained at home is another important part of responsible ownership. Cats allowed to roam face risks including motor vehicle accidents, fights with other cats, attacks from dogs and other animals, and exposure to disease. Roaming cats can also have an impact on local wildlife. Containment does not mean a cat has to spend its entire life indoors. A secure, escapeproof outdoor enclosure or cat-proofed garden can provide fresh air, activity and stimulation while preventing a cat from wandering
beyond the property. With climbing areas, toys, scratching posts and regular play, cats can enjoy a safe and enriching environment at home. Microchipping and registration are equally important. If a cat does escape, identification gives it the best chance of being reunited with its owner. If you find a cat that appears to be stray, first check for identification and, where safe to do so, take it to a veterinary clinic to be scanned for a microchip. A temporary paper collar with your contact details may also help determine whether the cat belongs to someone nearby. Your local council can provide advice on the appropriate next steps. Australia’s cat overpopulation problem will not be solved by one organisation or one individual. It requires responsible pet ownership, desexing, identification, safe containment and support from the wider community. By taking these simple steps, we can help reduce the number of unwanted cats while keeping our own feline family members safer, healthier and happily at home. Contact us for more information about anything mentioned in this column.

LOAN LOWDOWN The Experts
WHY FIXED RATES ARE WORTH A SECOND LOOK A
STEVEN KORNER The Finance Korner thefinancekorner.com.au
ustralian borrowers have had a bumpy few years, and 2026 hasn’t been much calmer. After three cash rate rises earlier in the year, the Reserve Bank has now held the cash rate at 4.35 per cent for two consecutive meetings, with most major bank economists expecting it to stay there for the remainder of the year. Inflation is still running above the RBA’s target band, unemployment has edged up to 4.4 per cent, and national property prices recorded their biggest monthly fall in over three years in July. It’s a mixed picture and one where locking in certainty can be genuinely appealing. Certainty in an uncertain market The clearest advantage of a fixed rate is predictability. Your repayment stays the same for the fixed term, regardless of what the RBA does at its next meeting. For households working to a tight monthly budget, that stability can matter more than chasing the lowest possible rate. It removes
the guesswork from financial planning and makes it easier to commit to other goals, like renovations, savings targets, or simply keeping stress off the table. Protection if rates move again While most economists expect the RBA to stay on hold through 2026, opinion isn’t unanimous, some forecasters still see a chance of another increase given inflation remains elevated. A fixed rate insulates borrowers from that risk entirely. If further hikes do materialise, fixed-rate borrowers simply continue paying what they agreed to, while variable-rate borrowers absorb the increase immediately. A useful bridge to rate cuts Most forecasts point to rate cuts starting in 2027 rather than this year. For borrowers who fix now, a shorter fixed term (say, one to two years) can offer stability through the remainder of this holding pattern, with the flexibility to move to a variable or new fixed rate once cuts are more likely to be on the table.
Where fixed rates fall short Fixed rates aren’t right for everyone. They typically come with less flexibility, extra repayments, redraw, and offset access are often limited or unavailable, and break costs can be significant if your circumstances change during the fixed term. If the RBA does move to cuts sooner than expected, fixed-rate borrowers won’t benefit until their term ends. The bottom line With the cash rate steady but the outlook still finely balanced, fixing all or part of a loan can be a sensible way to manage risk

rather than a bet on where rates are headed. The right structure, fully fixed, split, or variable depends on your income stability, plans for the next few years, and appetite for risk. A conversation with a broker can help weigh these options against your specific situation before you commit. This article is general in nature and does not take into account your personal financial circumstances. Speak to a licensed finance broker before making borrowing decisions.

This week carries a transformative energy, particularly around emotions, relationships and finances. Something you’ve been holding onto may finally feel ready to be released. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; sometimes it simply means choosing not to carry it anymore. A financial conversation or decision may also require your attention.
Relationships take centre stage, shining a light on where there is genuine balance and where something may need adjusting. Speak honestly rather than expecting others to instinctively understand. For singles, an interesting connection could develop. Above all, notice how you feel around people. Your energy will often recognise what’s right before your mind does.
A fresh wave of motivation arrives this week, but you’re being reminded that you don’t need to rush to make things happen. Something that has felt uncertain may finally begin to make sense. Trust what your intuition has been telling you all along. An unexpected conversation could also open a new door, particularly around work, money or future plans.

This week is about getting back to what makes you feel grounded and secure. If life has felt a little chaotic lately, simplifying your commitments will help you regain your balance. Relationships benefit from honest communication, especially around something left unsaid. Financially, think long-term rather than looking for an immediate result.
There’s a change in the air, and you may find yourself questioning whether something still fits the person you’re becoming. Don’t be afraid to change your mind or choose a different direction. Communication flows more easily this week, making it a wonderful time to clear the air. A new idea could also spark excitement about what comes next.
Your energy turns inward this week as you reflect on what you genuinely want rather than what others expect from you. You’ve spent enough time second-guessing yourself. Trust your emotional intelligence and listen to what feels right. Someone close may surprise you with honesty, creating an opportunity for greater understanding and a much deeper connection.

After a busy few weeks, you may feel ready to slow things down and reassess your priorities. Your confidence hasn’t disappeared; it’s simply becoming quieter and more grounded. Money and self-worth are highlighted, encouraging you to recognise the value you bring. Don’t settle for less simply because it feels familiar. You’re ready to expect more for yourself.
Your season has arrived, bringing an opportunity to reset, refocus and decide what you want this next chapter to look like. You may feel inspired to make changes to your routines, appearance, work or personal goals. Follow that momentum. Just remember that everything doesn’t need to be perfect before you begin. Progress starts with one intentional step.
You may crave more quiet than usual this week, so listen when your energy asks you to slow down. Something from the past could resurface, not necessarily to be repeated, but to show you how much you’ve grown. Trust your instincts around relationships. What feels peaceful deserves your attention far more than anything requiring you to constantly prove yourself.

Your connections could play an important role in what’s next. A friend, colleague or unexpected introduction may bring an opportunity. Be open to collaboration rather than trying to manage everything alone. You’re also being encouraged to think bigger about a long-term dream. What once seemed unrealistic may suddenly feel much more achievable.
Career, purpose and direction come into sharper focus this week. You may feel ready to take greater responsibility or finally pursue an idea you’ve been quietly considering. Don’t underestimate how much others notice your abilities. An opportunity to step forward could arrive when you least expect it. Say yes before your mind starts finding reasons to hesitate.
You’re being encouraged to step outside the familiar and look at life from a different perspective. Travel, study, personal development or exploring something new could reignite a part of you that’s been feeling restless. You don’t need to know exactly where a new path leads before exploring it. Sometimes curiosity is enough reason to take the first step.

Create your own big day traditions W
eddings are very often about tradition, but they don’t have to be that way. In fact, you can stick with certain traditions but throw some unique ideas in to give your big day a perfect mix. Remember, you want your wedding day to be about you – so don’t compromise just because tradition dictates a particular thing has to be done. Here’s four ways you can make your wedding unique: DON’T CUT THE CAKE Cutting the cake is such a big part of a wedding but often, it’s an expensive exercise and not everyone likes cake! Consider having another option, like cupcakes or even donuts. A lolly bar will suffice as well – the cake cutting is more about the symbol of that moment, and not so much about the cake. Will people really notice if you skip the cake cutting but have other awesome dessert options? We reckon that classic cake cutting photo is so 1980s and 1990s. Why not consider something different? along. For example, if you’re an NRL fan or basketball supporter, you might have a few team jerseys in there just to personalise the experience. When planning your wedding, you may think that nobody will use a photo booth, but you’ll be surprised how quickly it attracts your friends and family, especially when they’ve had a couple of drinks!

DUMP THE ARCH After a big night of fun and dancing, it’s sometimes not the most ideal way to say goodbye. Guys in sweaty, smelly suits and girls struggling in high heels, all trying to create an arch that looks like it’s about to fall over. Why not find another way to say goodbye?
SPECIAL CARS? GRAB AN UBER INSTEAD So much money often goes in to wedding cars, and most of the time, your guests never even see them. If you’re not all that fussed about cars, don’t even bother going over the top. Just find somebody who is willing to drive you, or grab a hire car. And after the wedding, why not just grab an Uber to your hotel for the night?

PHOTO BOOTHS If you can’t afford to pay your photographer to stay for the whole night, then something that encourages guests to take photos themselves is a great idea. Penrith has come to know and love. The workshop is also now fully visible from the floor so
you can see York’s masters at work. “We do everything here in Penrith, and it was important
that the new store really showcased that,” Ely said. “Every piece is important to us. Every repair, every sale, every design, it all happens here in Penrith, and I’m incredibly proud of that.” York Jewellers is Penrith’s best known jewellery brand, having first launched in the 1970s. But it has perhaps never taken a leap as giant or as extravagant as this one. “It’s a significant step forward for York and one I’m extremely proud of. It’s a new chapter for the business, but one that builds on more than 50 years of history here in Penrith,” Ely said. “I encourage people to come in, have a look around and experience it for themselves. I’ve built this store for Penrith and for our clients, and I want people to enjoy the space as much as I do.” York Jewellers is located at 22 Riley Street, Penrith and is open seven days.
