With only two weeks until fashion week, work at Weekend offices has accelerated full throttle. What we see on the runway doesn’t always translate off the runway but what always remains a constant is to take seasonal trends and make them your own. Mix and match or wear head to toe if you want but as long as you do you when it comes to these trends, it’ll work. Here is our fashion forecast for all the trends that will be major when the colder months roll around.

This trend is certainly not new. A deliberate attempt at looking nerdy became trendy a few years ago but what we’re currently lusting after are the aviator style optical eyewear as seen on the Gucci AW’16 runway. Alexa Chung and Kendall Jenner were seen wearing them so naturally, we want a pair too. The look you’re going for is one your dad circa the ‘70s would be proud of. Hey, you can even borrow his if he’s still got them lying around!
While we’ve usually opted for embellishments such as gems or sequences in the past to elevate our winter staple—the biker jacket, lately we’ve been spotting embroidery on the runway. Are our mothers pleased that their teenage pastime is making a comeback? Definitely. The traditional craft is considered cool now and its range of modern stitched designs is making us want to pick up a needle and thread too. And with big design houses like Alexander McQueen and Gucci’s take on it, can you really blame us?

Shiny and luxe, velvet is certainly not new and this autumn/winter it is taking centre stage in every fashionista’s wardrobe. While you may think the material is heavy and can potentially weigh down an outfit, ruining your look, velvet doesn’t have to be that way. The looks we’ve seen are sexy and seem effortless to wear. You’ll be seeing velvet accessories, coats, suits, slip dresses, skirts, you name it and it’ll be in velvet. It’s no longer reserved as an evening-only material or one that can only be worn in a dark colour— you’ll be seeing it everywhere and in every colour. We especially have our eyes on the Ralph Lauren and Prada velvet dresses and suits.
When you hear the word ‘corset’ do you immediately think of the ridiculous trend of waist training and/or Elizabeth Darcy? Yeah, us too till we laid our eyes on the corsets seen on the autumn/winter ’17 catwalks. These corsets don’t look like they’ll be squishing our ribs or making it harder for us to breathe— these look quite comfortable and chic! The easiest way to wear it would be wearing it as a bustier over a dress which combines not only corsetry but also the trend of wearing underwear as outerwear, should you wish to wear it that way. Otherwise wear it however you like and make it your own.
‘80s Glam
Lace in tones of grey, black, white with puffed shoulders, and statement collars was one of the biggest trends seen on the catwalks for winter ’16. The eccentric nod to the Victorian era had regal, etherial and intricate details to modern sheer finishes. Think Victorian meets modern day feminine boho with some of the most beautiful pieces seen at the Alexander McQueen show. In contrast, Elie Saab opted for a darker, sultry approach using black lace and sheer fabric that allowed a peek of the undergarments worn by models, incorporating the lingerie on display trend too.
Just when you thought you could get rid of any old clothes to make room for new ones (obvi), ‘80s glam is back with a bang so you’re going to be wanting to rummage through your mother’s closet for this one. Power dressing is back if the autumn/winter fashion weeks earlier this year, were anything to go by. We’re talking ruching, exaggerated sleeves, huge waistbelts, spiked stilettos, satin, everything you ridiculed your mother for wearing.

We know it’s an unsaid rule of the beauty world that you don’t pair a dark lip with dark eye-makeup but really, when has makeup ever been about rules? If you previously only did one or the other, then be prepared to be bold this autumn and go for dark eyes and dark lips. We’re into dark bronze eyes with the blackest blackcurrant shade on the lips. But we equally adore a berry shade on the eyes and lips to bring it altogether.

Sparkles
Sparkles and glitter sometimes get a bad rap. Sure, they’re girly and something you sprinkled everywhere in the third grade but they can be pretty badass too. If you’re going to adorn sparkle then try making the rest of your look edgy or minimalist. Wear glitter eyeliner on your lower lash line and pair it with a dark lip and not much else. Alternatively, just use it as face jewellery—that works too.
The smokey eye
This is a beauty perennials that’s seen on the runways every year and there’s a reason for that. There’s nothing you can’t do with a smoky eye—trusttt. And a smoky eye is versatile—you can go for the classic black or add some intergalactic shimmer for the disco and you can incorporate colour in it too. Whether you want to wear it with highlighted skin and a nude lip it’s entirely up to you.
The Twiggy lashes
Twiggy has always been our favourite models—till this day, no other model has had a look as unique as hers. Her doll-like-lashes are still used as inspiration for fashion shows every season. Go for maximum impact and apply multiple coats of mascara to both upper and lower lashes—the clumpier and more spider-like the better. You want to go for pale skin, doll-like lashes and black lips to fully achieve the punk Alice Cooper-meets-high-fashion look.
We’ve never felt more overwhelmed with our beauty product choosing as when we come to choose what nail colour to wear. Autumn is the season to wear all the dark shades but that’s predictable so to opt for a different look this year, we’re going for a metallic shimmer finish on the nails. We do shiny throughout the year, and we had a brief fling with matte nails too (not for us) but lately on the runways, we’ve spotted metallic and glass finishes and we’re all about that new new over here at Weekend HQ. We’re thinking colours that range from rose gold, colours that mimic a disco ball (a colour palette Lisa Frank would be proud of) and a seafoam green with a sheer, iridescent finish—you’ll be anything but predictable with these choices.

What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their goals? Lack of perseverance.
Everyone’s body is different, and they respond to food differently. Your genes would also matter in this case. However, ideally you can get away with one cheat meal a week.
What should I do to lose 15pounds?
Protein Shakes: What’s the hype? Should I be having them?
How long should losing 20 pounds take if we’re eating clean and working out?
Whole foods are better than anything else of course. However, if your body requirements are not being fulfilled at some point then you can take supplements to help fill that gap. Before, during and after workout your body requirements increase, for which these protein shakes can help immensely. I can talk about the biology behind this but that can take a while, so just take my word for it.
There is no specific answer to this as everyone’s body requirements are different. Just workout, eat clean & sleep well.
Approximately 10 weeks, of course this can vary due to different circumstances.
Do women bulk up if they work out? No they do not.

The Experience
This week we decided to change it up a little and visit the place that everyone’s been talking about; Patli Gali. It was exactly like their description says, ‘where east meets west’. The ambience was a mixture of a dhabba and a western cafe. From the brick walls that had short quirky messages on them, to the seating arrangement, the newspaper styled menu and the serving crockery. All of these little details added up to an interesting and unique ambience of east meets west. Although our main courses were all western dishes, we chose the very desi chicken pakoray for our appetizers. I must say, having pakoras was quite the treat, making us reminisce about Ramadan days. For drinks we had Neela thotha which was quite unique in its own way, and of course lassi because
why not?! The open face sandwich isn’t something people always get right, therefore I have to give it to them, they sure got it right! Although, if you’re a weight watcher or just not a fan of cheese, I would suggest you don’t order this. The stuffed chicken with mustard sauce and mashed potaoes is hands down our favourite. The chicken was scrumptious stuffed with just the right amount of cheese, and topped with mustard sauce which was quite luscious; it truly brought out the flavours of the entire dish. Finally to end things we ordered a dood patti chai with ilaichi because you’re just not desi enough if you don’t have chai after every meal. Overall, Patli Gali has done it right with the theme; we would definitely recommend this place to all our desi lovers out there! Until next time, happy eating Weekenders!

Narcos
Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you would know that season 2 of Narcos has returned to our Netflix screens. Chronicling the rise and fall of the notorious Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura) the series has captivated everyone. The first two seasons focus on the corrupt life of Escobar as he narrowly escapes capture and the DEA agents are left chasing their tails. What the show creators don’t dramatise is how the cartels wrecked and ruined lives of the people that were affected by the drug business. Kudos to the show writers and Wagner Moura for making Pablo Escobar out to be a likeable character that you almost don’t want caught.

If you miss your dose of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) from the SATC days (we know we do) then you’re in for a treat because come October, we’ll be able to see SJP on our screens again (so excited). Returning to HBO, SJP’s new show ‘Divorce’ shows Parker as a woman at a different stage of her relationship (sadly, no signs of Mr. Big). The comedy is sure to deliver on all fronts and viewers would be able to relate to the trials and tribulations of a single woman trying to get her life on track again.
September is the time of the year when you feel like you can start afresh—the leaves change colour, the weather starts to get cooler, it’s the start of the new academic year but what we love the most about September and autumn is that there’s a slew of new shows on tv and our favourite ones return after a summer hiatus too. Move out of the way stationary shopping, we have new shows we want to binge-watch.
Gilmore Girls

We were pretty distraught when our favourite show suddenly came to an end and have been watching reruns of Gilmore Girls ever since, because let’s be honest we want as much of Lorelei and Rory (they are all relationship goals) as we can possible get. The show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino picks up the show 10 years later and will give the ending she thought it deserved. Not much has been revealed in terms of what’s in store for our favourite girls but look out for it on your Netflix screens come mid-November.
We’ve been obsessed with true crime documentaries/podcasts and there are no signs of us stopping anytime soon. After being gripped by Making a Murderer and Serial, we’re looking forward to Netflix’s documentary Amanda Knox. If you’re not familiar with the case, then here’s quick fact-sheet. Amanda Knox the former US student has been twice convicted and twice acquitted for the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy. The docufilm plays out like a thriller and takes the audience back to the murder of Kercher in 2007, showing unseen police footage of the bloodied bedroom. It covers the media coverage the case received, the false accusations, the trial and multiple appeals, etc. It’s a must-watch for fans of true crime who fancy themselves as armchair detectives (we know we do).

Another show that’s been making the rounds lately comes from the writers of The Wire, American Gangster and Schindler’s List and has fast become the must-show of the summer. The show focuses on Riz Ahmed’s character Nasir “Naz” Khan, a 23-year-old American Pakistani college student living with his parents in Queens, New York. While driving a borrowed yellow cab, Naz encounters a mysterious woman who is later found murdered in her bedroom. What follows is an intricate story of a young man whose life is wrecked by the injustices of the American criminal justice system.

The second season of Mr. Robot has recently returned to Amazon and we’re still a little confused as to what’s happened so far. In the first season we saw the young, anti-social computer programmer Elliot work as a cybersecurity engineer during the day, turning into a vigilante hacker by night. The finale of the first season left us scratching our heads as to what happened and in season 2 we’re hoping to get more answers. In season 2 we see Elliot come to terms with his mental health issues and he clearly has some. Along with the other members of the (funnily called) ‘fsociety’, he has to cope with the hackers’ impact on Evil Corp. Very much like the first season, you will have re-watch episodes to fully understand what’s going on but once you do, you’ll appreciate that it’s an expertly created show with a topical storyline.

What was the very first monochromatic piece you created?
The first black and white artwork I made was in 2011. It was a portrait of two women (my mother and sister) titled “The Churchgoers”. I had been experimenting with new techniques and was very interested in exploring how layering paint beneath a single-line rendering could enhance it’s dimensionality and depth. This work and others like it were the beginning of the style for which I am known today.
What would you want to educate people about through your work?

If I am able to inspire others to see the beauty in life, feel a passion to create and believe in their own abilities, then my work is complete.
What/who inspires you and your collections?
My work is inspired by life and is entirely autobiographical. Although my inspirations come from my day to day experiences, I choose to represent them symbolically, rather than literally. Within my paintings can be found my love, passion and desires as well as my fears and doubts...everything is there.
If you could collaborate with any internationally known artist, whom would it be? I deeply admire and respect the work of British sculptor, Antony Gormley. We share a similar aesthetic and ideal when it comes to representing the human form. I’m curious to see what kind of things he and I would come up with if given an opportunity to work together.
If time/money wasn’t an issue, what would you invest in? (This could be anything, even an art piece by your favorite artist)
Aside from making art, I have a passion for collecting it. I would continue to support the arts as a patron as well as invest in creating an organization that encourages and empowers the inner city youth to live creative, artistic lives.
If your pieces were a person, how would you describe them?
Some of my paintings and drawings are more playful than others; however, as a whole, I’d say my work is introspective, thoughtful and often times questioning it’s existence in hopes to gain a higher understanding of self.
Does your work influence your style or vice versa?
Simplicity reigns supreme in both my work and my style. I believe that when it comes to art, fashion and design - less is always more. By breaking form down to it’s essentials, I have the freedom to communicate my message to you in the most direct and genuine way possible.
