10 Simple Beauty Hacks
There comes a time during the day where laziness trumps looking effortless and like you have your life together. For us, that’s usually on an early Monday morning when we’ve hit the snooze one too many times, prioritise caffeine over showering (hey, dry shampoo, deodorant were made for early Monday starts) and are rushing to get out the door and make it to work on time. Studies (Weekend-conducted…ok, a quick show of hand around the office) indicate that simple hacks (instead of choosing to go to bed early over binge-watching the second season of Narcos) are simply life-changing. And yes we’ve tried these, and yes, we can report back that they are indeed life-changing. So if you’re a lazy girl or a girl in a hurry (if that’s the term you prefer) then keep on reading!

If you do find time to do makeup in the morning in the comfort of your home instead of mid-commute and can’t wait for your moisturiser or your make up to dry then just blast the blow dryer on your face for a few seconds (cool setting so as to not burn your face, that won’t help) and voila, face is dry.
The Beauty Edit 1 Instead of keeping your phone in bed with you or close to your bed and using it as an alarm clock, invest in an actual alarm clock (that is what they were made for) and keep it farther away from your bed so when it goes off in the morning, you actually have to get out of bed to turn it off. Or just wake up and get a punctual start to your day that we all fantasise about the night before. When we’re really in the mood for some early morning self-flagellation, we like to hide the said alarm clock the night before. So it’s a fun game of torturous treasure hunt and waking up but hey, it sure does the job.
If you want thicker looking lashes (and who doesn’t) then before applying your mascara, coat your lashes in loose face powder. The powder acts as a primer for the mascara and makes the eyelashes look clump-free so you don’t look like you’re wearing tonnes of mascara.
Before using your eyelash curler to curl your lashes, once again blast the blow dryer on it for a few seconds so it heats up a little and curl away. The heat helps give eyelashes an intense curl that lasts all day.

7 We all suffer from blackheads (sadly) and those Bioré strips can get expensive (and not always very effective) so we make a baking soda mask. Add enough water to some baking soda so it becomes a creamy mixture, apply wherever you have blackheads and leave it on until it dries and wash it off. Blackheads no more!
We learned this one from our favourite beauty gurus on YouTube (NikkieTutorials, check her out) and it’s using an after-shave balm (she recommended the Nivea one) as a primer before applying your foundation. Of course we had one lying around the house and tried it and our foundation did not budge the whole day. Something about the glycerine in the balm that the foundation adheres really well too, we forget the science behind it but trust us, it works.

When we run out of makeup remover, we reach for our jar of coconut oil because there isn’t a single thing that coconut oil cannot do. Just try it: apply some on your face, massage it in so it melts the makeup and wipe away with a cotton pad.
9 We love dry shampoo and use it even when we have clean hair (for that extra grit and texture) but what we hate about it is the white powder-like residue it leaves on our hair (we don’t have all day to rub it in so it isn’t visible) so we apply some hairspray which dissolves the powder.
If you have an annoying zit that you want to cover up with foundation and concealer but don’t want the coverage to budge as the day goes on, then you need to layer your products strategically. Put on a layer of foundation and a dust a little powder over the pimple and then apply concealer. The powder acts as a glue to keep the concealer in place and this hack is from the experts so you know it works.

This week we had a chat with one of the founders of Justajoo, the captivating Omer Khan. Justajoo is an NGO started by students in Lahore who are passionate about trying to help the community in any way possible. Some of their social work involves implantation of water coolers, providing groceries for the poor/IDP as well as organizing Iftars during Ramadan and even getting the poor married. Justajoo was co founded by Mohammad Ali, Umar Tariq, Arsum Nadeem & Hamza Raheel Khizra Waqar: When and why did you get into this organisation? Omer Khan: I’ve always had a passion for what I do. It all started from our own personal efforts especially during the holy month of Ramadan. Then there was a time when a couple of my friends and
I believe this has been my purpose all along; it’s that feeling you get when you know you were meant to do something.
I raised around 6 to 7 lacs and we distributed that in different ways to help the under privileged. It kicked off when we went to help the internally displaced people (IDP) of Waziristan. We thought of making a Facebook page just for convenience and before we knew it we had raised around 27 lacs through this avenue

KW: How do you get people to donate & participate? OK: Honestly, it hasn’t always been easy. Other than word of mouth, we really have to gain people’s trust and we try to do that by getting people more involved in the work we do rather than just by donating money. Once we gain people’s trust, those who used to donate small amounts now donate a lot more.
KW: Who has been your biggest influencer as a social worker? OK: I don’t believe I’ve been influenced by anything as such. I believe this has been my purpose all along; it’s that feeling you get when you know you were meant to do something. It was the sad reality of watching our society and how no one is willing to spare time or ego to help those in need. But of course I couldn’t have done any of this without the countless prayers of my
parents for whom I am forever grateful.
We believe education is the most important factor which can bring change to a nation.
KW: The one piece of advice that stuck with you? OK: There are two phrases of wisdom that I never forgot. One was ‘Never make an excuse’ and the other was that when you face fear, you can either forget everything and run or you can forget everything and rise.
KW: What are some of your fondest memories from working with the organisation? OK: Ramadan is my favourite month of the year because it’s when we all work together and get the most social work done, as it is the month of giving. But other than that I have to say there was this one time when a lady had called us because she needed a blood donation post operation. Once my friends and I had given her blood and the operation was successful, she sent me a long text thanking me for my part in savings her life. This is an unforgettable moment which resonates with me even now -

Because quite frankly, with the struggle we go through, there is no profit at the end of day. We’ve had to drop our egos down to zero for starters and that’s not easy. Everyone has ego, some more than others and some less. However with this type of social work you have to completely erase that. We would stand outside the mosque or in our university holding boxes asking people for money. In university people would walk by and make silly comments. These were times where it got quite tough. Another difficulty was to gain peoples trust. We had to work really hard to not only gain their trust for lending money but to also show them what we

The Reading Room Book: Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Review by Asmara Ahmed Qaisrani ( @TheDoctorReads)
This deceptively slim little snake of a book was set as part of our required reading at the LUMS Young Writers Workshop of 2013 . Like an idiot, I figured this would be a light read, it’s barely 144 pages, what’s the most that could happen?! This, in spite of the title that quite openly blared ‘Chronicle of a Death FORETOLD’. And, yep, there it is, in the very first line: ‘On the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on.’

So much for suspense, right? WRONG. Marquez is a master at work here and using the viewpoints of different characters involved in a very public murder, weaves a tapestry of a myriad human motivations

It’s a gleefully gruesome bit of satire against the authorities yet tinged with sadness and sympathy for the victim, Santiago. I still recall what our instructor, the novelist Bilal Tanweer, told us, how Marquez takes all the characters testimony of perceived innocence and makes a narrative of collective guilt.
The plot, again, sounds straightforward enough but as soon as you’re immersed in the world of the narrator’s investigation, you begin to see that no If you’re a die-hard fan of Marquez, this two version of the same events can come will be a veritable gem for you. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve had some really good experiences at these restaurants, but it felt a little repetitive. This was when Wings had come to the rescue! The very edgy & cool themed Wings was a pleasant change of scenario. From the fun and creative menu to the ambience and decor, everything about wings was as we say ‘zara hatt ke’. Before I talk about the food, I want you to take a moment and truly acknowledge the originality of the entire place. There was a motorbike at the front, fun wall art to add pizazz and intresting
architectural details. Every part of the room was interesting to look at. My favourite part though has to be the wifi password which was “TalkToEachOther”, and it was written on their wall haha! What a great initiative. Moving on to the food, for starters we had BBQ wings which ended up being my absolute favourite! The wings were bathed in a mouth watering BBQ sauce, soaking up the richness of it and making it a true delight for the tongue. To top it off the fries on the side were made to perfection. Like the master chefs always say, if your fry is wiggling, it is not cooked right! These fries were

Rising to the challenge RIS-Wellington Campus-British Council Pakistan in collaboration with Roots International Schools held the biggest Education UK Exhibition this year at RIS Wellington campus. The Education UK Exhibition is a popular annual and the most awaited platform that connects UK higher education institutions with prospective students from Pakistan. The 2016 tour was an excellent opportunity to meet with representatives of leading UK universities and gain first-hand information regarding higher education in the UK; admission criteria; admission requirements; courses and subjects on offer; life in UK as a student and more.
