Farah and Fatima’s latest collection e vokes the grandeur of Kashmiri art and embroideries, taking inspiration from a point in time when Europeans infused their sensibility into the Kashmiri aesthetic. Our pieces are crafted in fine detail, including intricate embellishments like Gota Work, French Knots, Pitta and Mukesh on a variety of pure fabrics including Net, Organza, Velvet and Brocade with knots and paisley motifs inspired by the elegance of Kashmiri shawls. The collection comprises versatile cuts and silhouettes which may seem traditional but are innovative and modern; ranging from contemporary tops and cigarette pants to traditional lehngas and ghararas.

STYLE SWAP Arjumand Bano and Tajwar Chaudhry

This week Team Weekend went in to play dress-up in a Freaky Friday twist with sisters Arjumand Bano and Tajwar Chaudhry.

NOVEMBER 27, 2016 | 62

Arjumand Bano

Lovingly known by friends and family as “Didi, Arjumand is an Entrepreneur and Fashion Designer, successfully running her own eponymous design label.

Tajwar Chaudhry

A lawyer by vocation, Tajwar is a passionate artist and currently works as the Social Media Director for Luscious Cosmetics.

weekend | lifestyle

Tajwar’s style All black everything!

Tajwar’s take on styling Arjumand

I wore a black leather top and paired it up with a pair of very flattering black pants. If it isn’t obvious, black is my color! I feel my style is really edgy and badass, yet very simple. I prefer funky hairdos and high heels instead of decking up on accessories. This look is what resonates most with my personality. To add the perfect pop of colour, I put on my favourite melted matte purple lip colour and held my spikes gold clutch and voila, my perfect look was ready. For me, less is always more!

I dressed her up in all black since she loves wearing vibrant colours. I wanted to show her how sexy an all Black ensemble can be. Since she loves to accessorise, I added a huge chunky necklace to her outfit while still staying true to my style. The ripped jeans and the blazer is a perfect combination of edgy and sexy and those fish scale heels are just the cherry on top. I love colours but somehow I find myself working with dark tones and creating very intense looks. I’ve never been the “girly” sort, I like standing out in a crowd rather than following trends that are overdone. That is what I feel is the truest reflection of my style but in swapping it with my sister I did keep her crazy and vibrant aesthetic in mind.

Arjumand’s style statement My personal style is all about a rush of colour and right now I am obsessed with tones of Green, especially Emerald, from clothing to interiors. I’ve developed this deep love for the colour and the hues vary according to season. I wanted the lips lighter and the hair simpler to add to the effortless soft look. I’ve found myself to be wearing a lot of wife beaters lately. So there it landed once again. I wanted to play around with a mix of winter hues and earthly tones, but at the same time, I had to add in a hint of popping colour. I’ve made numerous attempts to style these Zara pants and but I guess there always has to be a place and time for it. I harmonized my look with earthly hues in my Jacket and shoes and wore a few rings and a green serpentine clutch. I kept the makeup soft as always and finally got to tie my hair

Arjumand’s take on styling Tajwar Why I chose this look for Tajwar was so I could give her a little throw of colour close to her taste; not too vibrant, feminine but still a little edgy. I wanted her to put on a dress and be all flirtatious but at the same time also look chic and elegant. I thought this Emerald Green mid-length viscous dress from Zara was perfect for Tajwar since it’s playful but not too girly. I threw in a little pop of my favourite of color, along with a nice pair of platforms that help enhance her calves.

The best part about kaftans is that they are fuss-free, effortlessly chic and most importantly Pakistan appropriate! Weekend Scouts Obaid ur Rahman 3D/Anamorphic Chalk Artist and Muralist Karachi, Pakistan @obaid.13

Tell us a bit about your journey as an artist.

october 02, 2016 | 60

In 2014, I started drawing murals with coal on the walls of my house’s roof, making random compositions, copying works of graffiti artists and sketching portraits of a friend. It is during this time that I accidently drew a crack on the ground and later went on to find that this kind of art form is called 3D/Anamorphic art. I went on to study anamorphism by reading books and articles online and later took help from a renowned 3D street artist, Tracy Lee Stum. Tracy since then has served as a mentor and assisted me almost on all stages

of my journey into this art form, for which I am ever grateful. I kept on following my curiosity and challenged myself to try and experiment with different kinds of compositions ranging from simple cartoon characters to pool drawings to much complex compositions with more than one object in a single drawing and by the grace of God I have been successful to some extent. In December 2014, I had an opportunity to create my first and Pakistan’s first 3D Chalk Drawing in Public at Dolmen City Mall, Karachi. The drawing was very well received by the public and it motivated

me to carry on with my passion. I have since then created artworks for public events like Youth Art & Literary Exhibition, I Am KarachiDay and also became the first Pakistani street artist whose work got featured on Global Street Art, Graffiti Legends more than once. My work is now shared on international forums with street art giants from all over the world. In August 2016, I became the first Pakistani artist to participate in an international street art festival when I got invited to take part in Europe’s widely celebrated 6th International Street Art Festival in Wilhelemshaven, Germany.

What does the word Art mean to you? It will be very difficult to put in words, but I feel like for me art is a process of letting go of all the worries and negativity in one’s mind and escape from this world into a an other wonderful world where anything and everything is possible. What is your work influenced by? My work is mostly influenced by the International street art scene. I try and follow the international scene as much as possible and keep up with it by experimenting with different styles and techniques in my work to make keep it interesting and fresh. I am basically in pursuit of a style that I can call my own.

What kind of art do you most identify with and why? I am into street art, murals and 3D/anamorphic chalk art. I am into it because the art form is ephemeral/temporary in nature and it allows me to fall in love with the process of creation and enjoy it without being worried about how long it will survive. It teaches me to enjoy the present moment and not to stress or worry about the future. What was the very first piece you created? I have been into art for as long as I can remember. Talking about 3D/anamorphic art, the first piece that I created was on my rooftop almost 2.5 years ago on a Ramadan night at around 2 am when I accidently painted a crack on the floor with coal and later went on to find out that this is an art form called 3D art.

weekend | Fashion How would you describe your pieces? My artworks do not follow any particular idea or concept. I paint what I feel like painting. Most of my works are experimental; like I did a series of paintings where I converted 17th or 18th century miniature paintings into life size, interactive 3D artworks. I am fascinated by geometric patterns so they feature a lot in my works with objects that I want to paint. My most recent artwork which has a teddy bear inside a giant cube is one such example.

october 02, 2016 | 62

Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? No, I don’t think there is a person I would like to create a piece for. I paint for myself mostly but I would love to showcase my work in public in other cities of Pakistan as well, like Lahore, Islamabad etc and see how the people react to it

Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? There are so many memorable responses I have received ever since I started all this. Every time when I work in public the response is just beyond amazing and there has never been a negative reaction. The most memorable response has to be from an elderly man during the 6th International Street Art festival in Wilhelemshaven, Germany, who was probably in his late 80’s, I was so busy painting there on the street and he probably stood behind me for half an hour or so when I got up he said to me “I have heard bad things about people of Pakistan all my life and seeing you paint here today made me realize all those things were wrong”.

as this art form is very new to the audiences in Pakistan.

Name a few artists who inspire you. There are so many artists who are so inspirational but to name a few Leon Keer, Master Kurt Wenner, Jessica Walsh, M.C. Escher, Fintan Magee, Martin Ron, Odeith, INSA.

What is your ultimate goal/ dream as an artist? In the current times where nothing is actually original, everything is inspired or borrowed, my dream as an artist would be to develop a style of work that I can call my own and it is associated to me and only me.

Untold Stories In conversation with Sarah Jahaan Khan

November 27, 2016 | 82

Faizan Hussain Sarah Jahaan Khan belongs to the school of filmmakers who believe they are empowered to challenge norms and change mindsets through films. She is a young documentary filmmaker who took inspiration from her mother Samar Minallah Khan. At the age of 15 she started to highlight positive initiatives by rural women of Pakistan to address the impact of climate change and made her first documentary film ‘Harvesting Hope’. Her second film ‘The Ripple Effect’ (which is about how to access clean water) won the second award at the Girls Impact the World Film Festival

Awards at Harvard. The film was the finalist for the Austin Film Festival, Princeton Film Festival, Barcelona Planet Film Festival, NOOSA Film Festival in Australia, Women Delivers’ Art Cinema Corner 2016 in Copenhagen and was recently screened in Dhaka for the Asian Development Bank Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice. Sarah has also been featured in BBC’s list of the Top 100 Women of 2014 for her advocacy and filmmaking. She is a true inspiration for all those who wish to do something extraordinary. In an exclusive interview with Weekend she talks about her

To make progress we need to focus more on telling stories of the ones who are innovative and creative. There’s so much to learn from Pakistani women and their indigenous methods.

weekend | conversation career, inspirations and future aims. Faizan Hussain: Tell us something about your education? Sarah Jahaan Khan: I just finished my A levels from Headstart School in Islamabad. I’ve received an offer and 800th Anniversary Scholarship from Cambridge University for my undergraduate studies, which is quite exciting! FH: When did you make your first film and what it was about? SJK: I made my first film ‘Harvesting Hope’ at the age of 15 and it was about the health complications women cotton pickers face due to the excessive use of chemical pesticides. Cotton is Pakistan’s largest export yet people remain unaware of the kind of negative occupational effects on the health of young cotton pickers. I saw how it caused painful rashes, different kinds of cancers, and even reproductive complications such as miscarriages, in addition to the chemicals contamination of entire villages. FH: How do

you research for your films and how long does it normally take? SJK: The interviews and research are always time consuming compared to the actual editing. I research the issue in depth and speak to experts and this process takes a long time. FH: What is the main focus of your filmmaking? SJK: My short films have always been focused on the relationship between women and environmental issues. Rural women have issues like collecting water from far off areas due to shortage of water, picking cotton, ensuring food security for the family etc. Because of their dependence on natural resources, women are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Pakistan is the 5th most vulnerable country in terms of climate change, therefore preventing its negative ramifications through adaptation methods is especially pertinent. FH: Why did you choose film making as the medium to highlight these issues? SJK: I’ve always enjoyed writing, but to convey the issues of women and girls as effectively as possible, filmmaking was the best option and the most powerful medium. Because of these films policymakers in Asia took measures to restrict the activities which posed serious threats to the health of women and girls. FH: What is the one aspect which you focus on most in your films? SJK: When I make films, I make sure to highlight solutions addressing the issue at hand. To make progress we need to focus

more on telling stories about those who are innovative and creative. There’s so much to learn from Pakistani women and their indigenous methods. We face problems as a nation, but it is crucial to highlight the countless stories of hope and solutions rather than continuing to lament the problems. FH: What are some of the challenges you face being a documentary filmmaker in Pakistan? SJK: The process of documentary filmmaking is quite difficult, but I think it becomes easier once one gains trust of the people who are being interviewed or documented. For my first film there were apprehensions that the negative impact of our country’s largest industry is being projected. But at the same time solutions can only be made by highlighting the issues. Then there are technical difficulties and lack of resources. So for the time being, I focus more on content than the technicalities of the film. FH: Who has had the biggest influence on your life? SJK: My mother has had biggest influence on me. I have my favourite memories from childhood of travelling to remote areas of Pakistan with her. She had to make these trips for her filming work and during those trips I learnt so much from the women she worked with. I got the chance to experience Pakistan’s vibrant spectrum of cultures and people. I have also come across women like Irum Ahsan, who is a champion of sustainability and plays a key role in organising the Asian

Development Bank’s Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice every year. FH: What do you do for the solutions of the issues highlighted in your films? SJK: I make sure to bring awareness to the maximum audience. For instance, I recently developed a workshop model aimed at equipping rural women and girls, who are on the frontline of climate change with the knowledge and methods necessary to deal with the issues at hand. It incorporates four basic, affordable and simple methods, such as organic farming or rainwater harvesting. It was attended by over 70 women in Mardan, and each was enthusiastic to incorporate these methods in their everyday lives. On a larger scale, leading sessions at the Asian Development Banks Judicial Roundtables has allowed me to inform Presidents, Chief Justices, judges, lawyers, and environmental experts about such solutions. FH: In what way your work is different from your mother’s work? SJK: Our work is somewhat similar in the medium, but the issues we work and focus on are different. I primarily focus on environmental issues, and climate change adaptation and mitigation, while my mother has been focused on child marriages for over 25 years. FH: You have big achievements at a very young age. What do all these laurels mean to you? SJK: It has been incredibly humbling to win a prize at the Girls Impact the World Film Festival Awards at Harvard for a film I made with no formal training in documentary filmmaking. I am grateful for these experiences, and for being invited to places like Harvard, Princeton, Paley Centre Manhattan, LUMS to speak about creating social change through film, but I think having the chance to speak at the Asian Development Banks Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice was the most special for me. FH: What is next for Sarah Jahaan Khan? SJK: I hope to continue telling stories that matter.

Fitness first What is your fitness philosophy? I believe fitness is more than just looking good; it’s about feeling good both on the inside and the outside. I strongly believe that you shouldn’t just train for a specific occasion, instead you should be training for a lifetime. What are your workout routines like? My workout routines vary on a weekly to a monthly basis. I like to challenge myself so I don’t get bored by a particular type of workout. However, I enjoy doing Zumba exercises the most. When was your “Aha!” moment? When you felt like you were successful at what you do? That moment has to be when I first lost 5kgs. It was such an amazing feeling because that was the first time I saw results in numbers.

I was so proud of myself for how I was able to do it and how it motivated me to do even better. When was that moment when you realised you needed a change of lifestyle before you got into fitness? It’s not your typical story where I grew up as a fat kid. I just lost my way when I went to college and had put on some pounds. But what made me realise was the criticism I got from my friends. There was a point where one of them asked me not to be in pictures with them because I’m too fat and it ruins their photo. I went home that day and cried my eyes out but soon after that I turned those tears into the driving force that changed me. What motivates you to work out every day? Looking at old photographs of myself and all the pain and hard work I had to go through is what gets me on my feet every day. I don’t want to go through all that again. Thinking about the future and how I never want to be dependent on anyone nor do I want to be going to the hospitals too often is another factor that motivates me. Biggest fitness misconception in your opinion? Biggest misconception has to be when people think they need to cut any and all carbs in order to lose weight. The other is that drinking a lot of green tea and other types of drinks for weight loss. This in my opinion is absolutely wrong. I truly believe that you need to bring permanent changes that you can stick to, not extreme ones that will last

temporarily. It doesn’t matter what you eat, it’s about your portion sizes. The only thing that’ll make you lose weight is exercise and a balanced diet. What’s your favourite quote or mantra? “The best never rest”. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rest at all, it just means you have to bare with a little discomfort now for comfortable days ahead. The ultimate fat burning food? There is no such food. However there are foods that can help such as ginger. The month or week before the big day. First and foremost, do not crash diet! There are absolutely no shortcuts to losing weight. However what you can do instead is eat in the healthiest way possible with a lot of carrots, cucumber and cardio! Not only will this help you shape your body but good food can help make your skin clear and glowy. Diet discipline (one diet rule you swear by) Diet doesn’t have an expiry date. Secret desi totka (for weight loss if any) Ginger is something i’ve tried and tested and works best for me. It doesn’t let fat accumulate, avoids bloating & puffiness. You can have it in meals or tea, whichever way

you prefer. How many cheat meals can I really have? Make sure you don’t turn a cheat meal into a cheat day. Always have a set plan and make it realistic. A cheat meal once a week preferably in the afternoons would be ideal. How can I get rid of belly fat? Unfortunately you cannot train a single spot of the body; it has to be exercise as a whole. Start by losing your overall excess fat then you can focus on particular tummy exercises. Do I have to leave ‘Chawal & Roti’? No you do not need to. You just have to have portion control and keep an eye out for the type of wheat or rice you consume. Avoid the white refined products and have them in their raw forms instead. You can have chapatti and rice but within a particular time and portion. How often should we be weighing ourselves? That’s a very good question. There are people out there who weigh themselves every other hour or so forgetting the fact that your weight includes water weight, muscle weight, fat weight and the food you’ve just eaten which will vary all the time, thus not giving accurate results. The best way to weigh yourself is once a week and in the morning. What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their goals? The lack of consistency and unrealistic goals are the most common reasons for failure. People expect overnight achievements which is wrong. If they start to accept the fact that losing weight is a long process which requires a lot of hard work and patience only. Do women bulk up if they do weight training? No; this just a misconception. The ideal way to go about it is to do a lot of cardio in the initial stages when you’re trying to lose the most excess fat. Then after losing the excess fat proceed to weight training and it will shape you up, not bulk you. It will give you feminine muscles and prevent saggy loose skin.

Guilty of these popular habits? Don’t fret because hey, it’s ok with us!

Hey, It’s ok... …to dust off your ugly Uggs ready for the colder months… …to wake up in your next day’s outfit because it’s too cold to change in the morning… …to shortlist five outfits for Halloween and on the big night, do an outfit change five times because they were all so good… …to stock up on junk food for Halloween trick or treating but secretly, it’s to top up your personal stash… *we won’t say a word* …to add chocolate to any green smoothie to mask the taste of veggies (you’re still getting your 5 a day veggies)… …to want to live the life of Olivia Pope, spin-doctor by day, wanted by the most powerful man in the world by night… …to ignore the latest iOs update from Apple, seriously how is there a newer version? …to not attend every random shadi that you get the Facebook invite for… …to wear a shadi outfit more than once, without wanting to hear how you’ve worn it before… …to wear your trusty, comfy kicks under that lehnga choli—if we’re dancing we’re not doing it in neck-breaking heels (although that is a talent we admire)… …to start making your birthday wish list when it’s a good 11 months and 27 days away—you want it to be well researched, we can appreciate that…

…to sit out Bakra Eid because it’s not a financially profitable one if ya know what we mean (this one goes out to all the kanjoos aunties/uncles who give Eidi a bad name, hey we’re watching you)! …to factor in that 00:01 am chocolate binge into your next day’s calories on MyFitnessPal because you already hit your goal for the day… …to not write on your friend’s Facebook wall when you’ve already wished them happy birthday by calling, texting and wishing them in person… …to re-watch every episode of SATC because the fashion and wit demands you watch it till the end of time… …if you’ve eaten sushi without using your chopsticks, that sashimi was still delicious…
