urkey offers a spectrum of wonders for any traveller! From breathtaking vistas and mind blowing architecture to unique cuisines and a complex and inspiring culture. Our visit was limited to Istanbul – but while we would have loved to see more of the country, our five days in Istanbul did not leave us wanting for anything! Istanbul is a city made for travel lovers. The people are beyond friendly and the landscape is truly awe inspiring. It is a city built for romantics. I was lucky to be accompanied by my beloved husband, Nouman Malik, who had booked us into the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel. The hotel is renowned for its scenic view of the Marmara Sea and the adjoining surreal landscape and the view from our room definitely did not disappoint. The city beckoned and so we went forth! Hi, I’m Sana Butt and I’m going to use this space to share my favourite spots in Istanbul. While I was there, I got the chance to explore and experienc e the great culture of th e city, so here’s my scoop!

Mosque is the second largest in the city and the best known site. One enters into a grand courtyard, with its columns of porphyry, marble, granite and bordered by a great pylon. I was amazed to see the weight of the dome is supported by the outer walls. The mosque is surrounded by many tourist sites, including the Grand Bazaar; a must-do for travelers heading to Istanbul for shopping, with over 61 streets offering more than 3,000 shops showcasing everything from carpets, crockery, and spices, tea, to lamps, leather items, antiques, and souvenirs.I spent hours roaming Grand Bazaar taking shots of local merchants and items. If you are a shopaholic, you will not regret visiting this place! I also got a chance to visit the Dolmabahçe Palace, still intact and glorified in its original decor, furniture, silk carpets, and curtains. A walk through its impressive halls is certainly a once in a lifetime experience. The handmade wooden floors in the dining hall, lavish furnishings, grand bohemian crystal chandeliers, and fine 19th and 20th century paintings were the main attractions of the exquisite palace. I couldn’t believe how they have preserved the history through its décor in its original form. Of course, being a Lahori, the most memorable part of
my trip revolved around food and oh boy what a feast the city offered! Istanbul is a city where you can get the world’s best food. And as I mentioned earlier, Turkey possesses a wide range of incredible cuisines. Not ones to miss out, we made sure to enjoy several culinary experiences from the finest local eateries. For fellow travellers looking for suggestions, I’d recommend Ulus 29 and Delhi Darbar Restaurant, as well as the Le Femoir Roof Top Hotel! Of course, no trip to Turkey can be complete without tasting the Turkish Kebabs. We had Adana Kebab with Turkish Salad at the Delhi Darbar. I can say with complete confidence that that magical taste is impossible to find elsewhere in the world. If you’re more on the lookout for international cuisines, Ulus 29 is the place for you. The restaurant was packed with travelers from across the world. Sadly, the five days flew by at record speed (hey time flies when you’re having fun!) and before we knew it, we were on our way to home sweet home. Looking back, I can say that Istanbul is a city that stands apart – the perfect juxtaposition of fantasy and reality. It was truly a dream come true.

Review by Asmara Ahmed Qaisrani ( @TheDoctorReads) Autobiographies are strange experiences, at best-- it’s akin to sitting in the over-decorated drawing room of a distant cousin who regales you with his experiences in life, everyone else who played a part in his success having been relegated to a shadowy position in the background. So, autobiographies are to be read with a generous pinch of salt. Fortunately, with Kunal Nayyar’s ridiculously frothy memoir, we’re engaged enough to not be too bored while entertained enough to not really dig into his real motivations either. Is he as acerbic as Mindy Kalig or Aziz Ansari on the immigrant

experience (“Kooonaal, is it?”)? No, he’s far too likeable and kind as a narrator to be a convincing social commentator. And by that same merit, equally forgettable. Starting from his birth in India, the book trots along at an amiable pace as a series of essays, tracking Mr Nayyar’s experiences in fields as varied as badminton and dating as an Indian teenager amongst the violent riots and power outages of India’s teeming metropolis, New Delhi. He breezes through his college life in America, memorably recounting his job as a member of the college custodial staff in a tone that is both sentimental without being sappy. Mr Nayyar’s sense of humor, while not being laugh our loud funny is also neither crass nor particularly mean. Which suits the tone of the book just fine, because when his bombshell confessions do drop (“Maybe that is the real reason why I don’t want children: so that I don’t have to touch another person’s poop for the rest of my life.”) you’re more likely to commiserate with him rather than condemn him. But with it’s long chapters on Indian festivals and Desi shaadi’s, you can tell that the book isn’t really being marketed at the average South Asian reader. The needlessly exotic descriptions of Hindu festivals get tedious enough but Mr Nayyar is smart enough to rescue his narrative with a well-placed joke. As a comedian his timing is impeccable but as a reader, I was left slightly disappointed-- another perfectly readable narrative let down by over-explanatory passages. Still, the beauty of this memoir lies in its simplicity, it is at its core an immensely readable and relate-able book, one that might just surprise you with its honesty and humble humanity.

Even the most result producing programs lead subsequently to failure because then you simply can’t continue. Holistic - a program should work on improving the mind + body. What’s physical fitness when mental stress is chronically high? Chronic stress leads to anxiety, panic attacks, blood pressure, lowered immunity, just to name a few. In case you’re wondering - yes, we teach you stress coping. Painless - weight loss is usually associated with constant cravings, hunger, energy lows. If your regime is more taxing than usual, you may also experience mood swings and sleeplessness. These are disrupting and debilitating situations to deal with. We say, make your journey painless by addressing these from the beginning. After all, fitness is a journey, not a destination but this doesn’t mean results aren’t forthcoming.
What’s your favourite quote or mantra? “Instead of counting calories count your blessings. Gratitude and chaos cannot co-exist because a cancer patient would give anything in this world to have the body you’re hating.”
Diet discipline (one diet rule you swear by) Stop counting calories. Quality of food matters more than the quantity of food.
How many cheat meals can one really have? When each meal will be satisfying to your taste buds, when each meal will have flavor, when each meal will be consumed with the attention that it needs and has enough quantity to keep you satiated for 4-6 hours, you won’t need cheat meals. You will enjoy eating out but without the habraa associated with waiting desperately for a cheat meal. And besides, cheating is never used in a positive sense. Think about it...

As long as the ingredients are good (non GMO, no artificial flavorings etc), it is good to go but it must be part of a plan.

Do I have to leave ‘Chawal & Roti’? There’s no leaving anything, only managing depending on your individual tolerance to starches, your insulin reactivity and your goals. How often should we be weighing ourselves? Never. Weight is a misleading indicator of progress in that it does not indicate if you’re losing any of the 3 variable components body fat, water or lean muscle. Losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean getting into shape. You could be losing weight and getting more disproportionate or you could be losing more muscle and adversely effecting your metabolism.
What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their weight loss goals? People don’t fail - the solution they blindly follow is designed to fail them. The traditional and common way to lose weight (eats less, exercise more) is an outdated approach to sustained fat loss. Hormones matter, metabolism matters. Stress matters. Any program that does not factor these things is a thing of the past.
What should be a realistic weight loss goal? Weight loss is not the target. Getting in shape, feeling energetic, feeling more grounded and confident is. The target ought to be realistic and subjective to each individual given the lifestyle.

Do women bulk up if they work out? Yes and no. Not all exercises are the same. Not all nutrition programs are the same. Female fat loss is different than male fat loss in that we’re dealing with hormones and fat loss, in general and the monthly cycle, in specific. Bottom line - rather than blaming yourself for not getting the results you want - question your regime. Most effective exercise regime for weight loss? The one that teaches you how to be detective rather than a dieter!
