What is your work influenced by? My art practice revolves around the realm of reality where displacement and coexistence are parallel to each other in a particular setting of time and space. The term ‘Heterotopia’ derived by Micheal Focault describes this phenomenon more clearly where he speaks of ‘spaces of otherness’ which are neither here nor there. Such spaces or settings are simultaneously physical and mental such as the space of a phone call or the moment when you see yourself in the mirror.
What was the very first piece you created? ”Between Here and There” it is a Salt print (an old technique to make print photographs manually). It is the first work of art of my career.

What makes your work/series so varied in presentation? I don’t like to work on the same lines for long. I get bored easily! I also think in different mediums e.g if I display the photograph of Observation of Refraction of Light Through Objects - I & II, that will not serve the purpose, the installation has to exist and be experienced in its own physical form. Similarly if the sculptures from the series Anomalous Intimacy are displayed, that will be a completely different thing from the language of a photograph.

A slightly more minimal tapered take on the original dhoti shalwar, this silhouette provided welcome reprieve from the extremely overdone cigarette pants of seasons past. But after months of seeing these bottoms splashed across the pages of every fashion weekly, we are over over oveeer it! S O DITCH Ever heard the phrase “too much of a good thing”...... (is a terrible, terrible thing)? Well there’s no place like Pakistan to make you realise the absolute truth of this idiom. Novelty bags Once upon a time the Birkin reigned supreme - the bigger and louder the better! Cue legions of socialites with their right arms awkwardly jutting out, neon coloured monstrosities creations dangling from their wrists. Naturally, we let out a collective sigh of relief squeal of delight when the first novelty bags in the shapes of books, milk cartons, cupcakes… appeared on the scene. They felt playful and lighthearted, a way to add some whimsy and most importantly personality to otherwise cookie cutter outfits. But that was then… and a few seasons on novelty bags just feel gimmicky and forced. And surely there’s nothing more uncool than trying oh so so very hard to be cool?
We understand that in our social media obsessed generation when the Kardashian/Jenners and their army of friends start wearing an accessory (and a super affordable one at that), it becomes the “it”item of the season. But not only do these goth-inspired chokers look super awkward with phoolbootishalwarkameez, they just aren’t the most flattering for the less swan necked amongst us. Add to that the lashings of too bright or too pale lipstick that seems to be the foundation of most fashionista uniforms, the look is just too try-hard, too contrived and way too overdone.

he sun was below the horizon and twilight was fading. It had been almost ten hours since we have been on the road from Lahore. We were travelling on a rented coaster van. It was pretty comfortable and made this long journey pleasant along with the scenic beauty of our surroundings. Finally we reached the village at the foothill of Chakesar. We camped there for the night and prepared ourselves for a hike in the morning. I remember coming here for the first time last year for the relief of earthquake victims. It was then when I discovered this piece of heaven on earth. Pakistan is ¬known for its beautiful Northern areas. The alpine flowers, fairy meadows, turbulent rivers and snow ¬covered mountains; this country has some of the world’s most beautiful valleys. However most of the places, like Chakesar, are not developed and thus are mostly under the radar. Chakesar is the least explored magmatic arc in the world. Chakesar village is the center of the district Shangla; it is situated about 6 km in the north¬west on the right bank of the Indus River. Shangla district consists of small valleys and is situated between the hillocks and surrounded by high mountains full of forests comprising, Blue Pine, Morinda Spruce, Chir Pine, Pindrow fir and Deodar Cedar trees. The average elevation of the district is 2000 to 3440 meters above sea level. The inhabitants live primarily on agricultural products and thus have been important to both the inhabitants and the invaders in the past. The name Chakesar evolved from the

word Char Hesar that means “four fortresses”. In order to protect this village from invaders the local inhabitants set up four fortresses around this village. My friends and I left the ranger station one night with a neatly folded map and a feeling of exhilaration to what lay ahead. The journey started at the base of the mountain around 8am. It was a crisp, cool morning as the wind whispered melodies through the leaves of the fir covered hillsides. I checked in with the rest of my crew, making sure that my water containers was completely full for the hike, and we began the climb! I felt happy in the company of nature; the bright hued flowers, the clouds sailing across the sky and the snow covered peaks of the high mountains in the distance filled my heart with joy! Chakesar has a healthy climate. The mountain slopes are covered with tall, green trees which present a pensive sight at sunset. The morning and evening hours are very pleasant too. A cool breeze refreshes the mind like nothing else, making one forget the oppressive heat of the plains back home. Finally after a hike of almost three hours, we reached the top. Sigh! I am not sure if I’ll be able to describe the next sight very well. The apex of the majestic mountain drenched in a brilliant light, beams of thin light impaled the snow in a bristling, moving line. All across our line of sight, the tips of the mountain range stuck up like a row of thorns. Swaddled around them were necklaces of powdery snow. Up there is a little town, consisting of ten families; the mountain is their home. At night they tell tales of their grand past. There are relics of the ancient Greek period at Chakesar. It is believed that Alexander the Great camped here for a few days. Historically the place has been home to many Buddhist hermits, as well as a small Hindu community. Supposedly Alexander the Great also fought a battle against the locals here in 326 BC. Every person experiences important events in his or her life. Sometimes the best experiences are the simplest ones where you feel at one with nature and your own self. As I sat on this mountaintop, I couldn’t help but recall a quote by Edmund Hillary; “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves”

Haris Khan is a Lahore-based social activist whoinitiated the commended Wall of Kindness campaign in Lahore. This week we met up with this inspiring individual for a conversation on the virtues of faith and kindness being the ultimate foundation of social welfare. Nur Zehra Qadri: Can you give us a brief introduction of yourself? Haris Bhatti: I did my MSC in Mass Communication and now I’m in Media Coaching at Punjab University. I’m teaching Film and TV. I am a professional videograoher, I have consecutively won the All Pakistan Inter University Videography Competition in GhulanIshaq Khan Institute, since 2012-2014. I am also a social activist, I work with many organizations. I am currently working with Roselane Studio
Faith is what matters most! When you doubt something it will never flourish
in California on an adventure series, an opportunity that I got through Cynthia Dawn Richie who is a producer at this studio and was a judge at the competitions held at GIKI. NZQ: What is the idea behind The Wall of Kindness and what inspired you to initiate this project? HB:I saw this happening campaign in Iran and thought I need to bring it to Pakistan. By the time I got to it, someone had already started it in Peshawar so I thought I must bring it to Lahore. I was always involved in

People are taking ownership of the project all over Pakistan and getting inspired by it.
Market. I decided to set up our wall there. The owner of the properly of the wall approached us obviously but eventually he was also very supportive of the cause. The locals there were becoming my strength. They were all supporting me, from every passersby to policemen. People from bastis are considered uneducated but it amazed me how they understood the concept. They only took clothes and stuff that fit them. Yesterday I checked the wall and saw clothes hanging there. So I know the concept is still running successfully. I believe electronic media is a major reason that helped us in our process, because these people who we want to cater to aren’t exposed to social media. Electronic Media coverage is essential for any such cause to get attention, acceptance and understanding. NZQ: How have people responded to this endeavour? HB:People are extremely generous! There were times when I would have rooms full of clothes. In the winter I travelled all around Pakistan and found that the campaign has had a ripple effect, there was a wall of kindness everywhere!

social work, volunteering at SOS and Edhi Saab was always a huge influence in my life. I met him before his death, I never imagined I could meet him. I was in Karachi for a shoot and someone randomly asked me if I wanted to go see him. I took two pictures of him, I posted one on the day of his death without realizing he passed away and that picture went viral. The other picture I only plan on releasing once I follow his path to my heart’s content. I have 10-15 projects lined up which include schools for children with interactive learning activities. It’s all going to be volunteer based. I recently starting a project in Gilgit Baltistan to overcome the language barrier between these areas and us. I also started the Teach for KPK program, which was based on activities like trust exercises in form of games so it is easy for kids to follow and enjoy.The idea is what matters, the support you will eventually get when you are determined to execute that idea. NZQ: What kind of a process did you have to go through to start this journey? HB:I saw this wall near my house in Firdous

People called and asked if they could expand this project and I encouraged them to do so, because obviously it’s not something I own, even if I did this is something that needs to grow and grow further. NZQ: Do you have a team you work with? HB:There were five people with me. Salman Alam, a photographer, three people, Asim, Asad and Husnain, were assigned to take this campaign forward through media channels and Javed Iqbal who painted the wall. NZQ: How do you assign tasks, what is the execution/maintenance process for such an endeavour? HB:Faith is what matters most! When you doubt something it will never flourish. The idea needs to be novel also, so people never lose interest. I had faith in my team that we will continue to do this, we will keep making that effort. I diligently keep checking the wall on the regular and so far the campaign is active and running. People are actually coming in to maintain it, I’m not even the only person responsible, and peopleare voluntarily taking responsibility and ownership of this initiative. NZQ: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your journey so far? HB:The biggest challenge was just breaking the idea/notion that this cannot happen! Breaking ideologies and mindsets is the hardest thing.

NZQ: What is the most memorable thing you have experienced in your journey so far? HB: When the campaign started, I spotted a man with his family on a motorbike. The man picked up a pair of shoes that my friend had put there and I wondered this man can afford these things, he is not someone we ideally are looking to reach out to. But I waited and after sometime saw that the man returned alone and put his old shoes in place of the pair he took before. I knew then that people are perceptive enough to understand how this works. NZQ: To what extent do you think on expanding this venture? HB:It’s expanding on its own, like I keep saying. People are taking ownership of the project all over Pakistan and getting inspired by it. Helping hands is another initiative that wall of kindness inspired, who distribute free meals on dastarkhuaans around the city. NZQ: What is your ultimate dream? HB:I never want to become part of an organisation. I want to continue doing this on a large scale but independently. I don’t believe in theory, only practical work. I just want to take my social causes forward and want to inspire people, like Edhi Saab, to do the same. My motto is “Don’t let Edhi die, Become Edhi”

We’re gradually seeing flared sleeves starting to crop up on racks in city boutiques. The almost slashed to the navel lace up style onesie/ leotard has reigned supreme on our Instagram for what feels like a looooong time. It has been worn and reworn and then reworn again by almost every fashion blogger and social media celebrity to the point of exhaustion.
