We will also be covering the skincare must haves every beauty geek needs to be packing in their makeup bag. First of all, this season calls for less drama and more minimalism, however, you can add some sparkle to your look to glam up your game. For the eyes we suggest Lime Crime’s Venus Grunge eye shadow palette which screams fall with every shade complimenting the orange-rusty hues of this season. With glitter making a come-back in our makeup staples, you can also opt for more glitz and glimmer with MAC’s timely release of its Nutcracker collection’s pigments and glitter sets. A
fter having lived with Mr Stephen King in my head for the better part of two decades now, I still can’t say I know his work. There are better, more Constant Readers out there but let me be the first to admit how underwhelmed I was by Mr King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy. Yes, I did read all three parts more than once. But it was more out of a duty I felt I owed my favourite writer, not because of any particular enjoyment I was after. Could it have been a better series? Well, from the guy who gave us ‘The Dark Tower’ and ‘It’, yes, most assuredly. But let’s be honest, this is Mr King-- if you want high literature, you’re better off with John Updike. The Bill Hodges trilogy can serve as an excellent introduction to anyone new to Mr King, and let’s face it, as a current member of his audience now approaching 30, I’m sure there are droves of younger readers devouring his work. But like little lambs circling the sleeping wolf, beware, my young Constant Readers-- the old wolf still has his claws and teeth, and one very vicious bite. Starting with ‘Mr Mercedes’, we are introduced to retired police detective Bill Hodges and his nemesis, Brady Hartsfield. Both are mirror images of each other. Both are as attracted to destroying the other as moths are to candles. And ultimately it is one misstep in their deadly dance that costs both. It’s a pure suspense novel, one that ticks along nicely in Mr King’s more than capable hands. But by the end of it, I wasn’t particularly in need of a sequel, as Mr King clearly felt I needed not one but two more books
Favourite lines: “For readers, one of life’s most electrifying discoveries is that they are readers—not just capable of doing it (which Morris already knew), but in love with it. Hopelessly. Head over heels. The first book that does that is never forgotten, and each page seems to bring a fresh revelation, one that burns and exalts: Yes! That’s how it is! Yes! I saw that, too! And, of course, That’s what I think! That’s what I FEEL!” -Stephen King, Finders Keepers
by him. It’s an interesting effect, one that Mr King employs well in this novel. While it is not as memorable as the first novel or as compelling in its horror as the second one, ‘End of Watch’ is an interesting blend of 50s horror and detective films where everything has an aura of noir around it. To rediscover that feeling in the more jaded half of the twenty-first century is no mean feat. Still, perhaps compressing all three novels into smaller novellas would have endeared me more to this series. Especially not from a writer who in spite of over four decades worth of books behind him, still hasn’t lost the ability to woo and ultimately win over his reader. It is a talent that perhaps no other writer of fiction has been able to emulate. If writing is a sport then Mr King is far and beyond, an Olympian. Is this as great a series as some of his more haunting works like the brilliant deathrow series ‘The Long Mile’? No. Is that reason enough for you to miss this series? No, because like any old magician, Mr King still has some genuinely frightening tricks up his sleeve. And you wouldn’t want to miss any one of them. Trust me.

starring our can-do heroes. They’re okay but are they katet level okay? Meh, not really. Which is not to say ‘Mr Mercedes’ is a bad book, it’s an interesting book, made more interesting by the fact that Mr King isn’t relying on his usual tropes to pull the story forward. Sure, the romantic interest is too brief to be plausible, let alone believable. But it’s always fun to rear Mr King when he’s fuelled by pure story, like his like his much more enjoyable novella ‘Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption’. We didn’t need a sequel for that one either, Mr King. At the novel’s core, what really provides the heart for this darkly purring engine, is the life of Brady Hartfield. His motivations are what compel you as a reader to follow along. You know he’s doomed, but at the same time, you can’t be sure. With every self-inflicted disaster, he proves to be his own worst naysayer. Yet, by pity or some proxy of it, we can’t help but follow the arc of his fiery trajectory. He’s definitely one of Mr King’s better villains of date, again, not Randall Flagg great, but one who’s on your mind long after the novel is over. In contrast, ‘Finders Keepers’, is a suspense novel suffused with horror-- not the supernatural kind (not yet) but of the more visceral kind-- murder. One that we’re much too used to in this day and age. Morris Bellamy is our new villain, a version of Nurse Annie from Stephen King’s totally horrifying ‘Misery’, except in this case, Morris has already achieved what Nurse Annie only threatened to. ‘Finders Keepers’ ups the ante in more ways than one, but somehow, the anxious, sinking feeling that accompanied Mr Mercedes is missing here-- Finders Keepers was a great book but it’s pacing had me checking my instagram more than once. It picks up towards the latter third of the book, and when it gets going, it’s REALLY gunning along. The end game is a breathless race and more than makes up for the slow pace in the beginning. Likewise, Bellamy just isn’t (for lack of a better word) as likeable a villain as Hartsfield-perhaps because in his enraged fan-boy-ing, too many of us Stephen King obsessives will see ourselves. Fair enough, Mr King. Your symbolism is taken. The third book in the trilogy is the purest horror novel. In it we come full circle to what makes Mr King the undisputed scream-king of the genre. ‘End of Watch’ races out of the stable at a break-neck speed. It was the one book I got through the quickest, purely for the finesse with which Mr King wraps things up. Many of the characters from the first and second book make appearances and we are left holding on to our racing pulses as the book careens from one turn of events to the other. Is it informed by the dark and far more personal violence of the first two books? No, but that’s mostly because our villain is a a disembodied entity now, so you feel almost as though the crimes aren’t really being done

Islamabad is no stranger to the 4O1 logo gracing the unveiling of every jaw-dropping, even gravity-defying, cake created pain-stakingly by Umair Khurshid, the owner of 4O1. With his signature floral wedding cakes, his birthday cakes are a testament to an artistic imagination running wild. We spoke to him over email about the challenges he’s faced and his future plans for the most in-demand bakery in the capital. Firstly-- why baking? How long have you been doing it and what got you started? I am a Meetha lover, used to be into kulfi, faloodas and ras malais when I was a kid but later when my sisters started baking, I used to go through this euphoria of “weehe, someone is going to bake a chocolate cake!” Baking was always fascinating and

The guy is simply amazing with his baking skills. I’ve been watching and following him since 5 years and he’s the most creative baker of this era. I’ve always believed in doing what I felt like. Though I made huge blunders but I was in a learning phase and you can never learn until you make a mistake. Being the only son in my family, I faced a lot of criticism from my immediate family as I decided to operate my bakery with myself as head chef. You know how things are like here! No one is happy with anyone. I remained determined. Still, I believe there is a slight change in the mind set of our elders these days. I remember singing was a simple NO from my family but like slowly they’ve realised that this generation is a lot different. I know customers who are willing to go for food and baking courses in their vacations. I get a lot of calls and requests to form a baking school as well. So yes, the best part is with time young kids today are learning something productive, which they are passionate about, along with their formal education. Who would you list as your confectionery inspiration and why? My sister. She is the one who taught me

Stopping over at a fuel station for fuel, grabbing a hot cup of coffee, I used to see a lot of old couples, who I assume were the shop owners, baking fresh brownies and muffins for their customers. That idea, of targeting the main highways and motorways of Pakistan and establishing thematic customised bake shops along with a small dine in for coffee lovers enroute to their destinations, is my eventual aim. What is your biggest challenge while executing your vision for a particular order in the face of client demands? Neatness, fine quality and amazing taste. What is your favourite 401 memory? Our first customised birthday cake for a cute little princess who was turning one. Her parents came to know about us and wanted to try me for the big day. I was trembling with excitement but with fear as well because they were very particular and I had no plan to ruin their event. The cake turned out to be a major hit. There was no piece left for me to taste but I followed my sisters instructions of playing with

That was the best feeling when every couple in the party asked me to stay as their personal guest on their weddings, anniversaries or birthdays-- that was when I told myself ‘You just unlocked a new level for yourself’. What kind of culinary trends would you like to see emerging in Pakistan over the next couple of years? Pakistan has always been a trend setter in its own way, from food streets to food parks-- I’d say the way things are going right now, I am sure a lot of investment can be done in restaurant and hotel business. Finally, what do you know now that you wish you’d known when you were just starting out in the baking biz? I learnt all these things with time and experiences. What I know now is that it takes time to become someone, something. To earn respect you have to work in a way that everyone around you start praising you and follow you not only on social media but in real life as well.
