As we bid adieu to the year with our fair share of happy days and heartbreaks, it’s difficult not to be amazed by the whirlwind that is life. Moments become memories in the blink of an eye and those memories too eventually start to fade. Okay so before our thoughts turn morbid, we’re going to stop and say a prayer for everyone to live large and love big, appreciate each other, accept one another, celebrate all our blessings and go give a big hug to all our loved ones! We start our issue this week with a BFF Style Swap with Saniya Waqar of Sweet Affairs and Natasha Khan of The Makeup Suite. In Weekend Eats we have a scrumptious meal at Cote Rotie in Karachi, in The Beauty Edit, our resident makeup guru reviews Antonym Cosmetics and in The Reading Room, Asmara Ahmed is back with a review of Haruki Murakami’s Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. All this and much more awaits you, so whatcha waitin for... Christmas?! Big hugs and much love! Sincerely, Team Weekend

STYLE SWAP Saniya Waqar & Natasha Khan

This week Team Weekend went in to play dress-up in a Freaky Friday twist with best friends Saniya Waqar of Sweet Affairs and Natasha Khan of the The Makeup Suite!

Saniya’s Outfit: Uzma and Afsheen outfit Bag: Clutch from Zara Shoes: Jimmy Choo Scarf: Uzma & Afsheen

Saniya's Style Statement

Even though I mostly prefer to dress comfortably in straight pants and a kurta (a matching headscarf is a must) I often change my style with my mood. There will be mornings where I’d walk out in traditional wear with khussas and chunri dubattas and some days I really want to switch on the glam in high heels even if I’m in jeans and a plain shirt. My go-to designers these days are Uzma and Afsheen who understand the cuts that I like and add some drama to my wardrobe when I feel like I need to switch things up. You’ll often see me wearing a scarf from Sana Safinaz or Khaadi, a Zara top and sneakers that I can walk all day in! And well yes I’ll admit there are days that just call for Nike pajamas with whatever I can manage putting on in five minutes, so yes, total disaster outfits are my forte too!

Natasha’s Outfit: Uzma and Afsheen outfit Shoes: Jimmy Choo Bag: Bottega Veneta Clutch

Saniya's take on Natasha's style Natasha has a unique style of her own. She wears casual outfits but makes them look catchy and edgy, so perfectly with bold lip colours. However, I wanted to see her in something gorgeous and formal for once which is why I chose this look for her. I gave her a dark lipstick because no matter how I dress anyone I want their own personalities to reflect through it as well. Natasha is a striking girl and the black Uzma and Afsheen dress looks gorgeous on her!

Natasha’s Outfit: Shirt: Zara Jeans: Levis Accessories: Tiffany wrist bangle Shoes: H&M

My style is usually very casual. I cannot live without my Levis jeans and my baseball jacket which i sometimes pair with combat boots. A plain white t-shirt or a button down is my go-to, styled with my naturally wavy hair and minimal makeup. I love cross body bags big enough to carry all my essentials for quick car makeovers when running late. Even though I don’t like wearing too much makeup so I usually go with a nice soft smoky eye and a matte pout. My top pick is Patina from Stilla liquid matte lipsticks.

weekend | lifestyle

Natasha’s style statement

Saniya has a very pretty style sense. She always dresses so comfortably, no one does quick and easy as gorgeously as her! I wanted to add a bit of edge to her style so I made her wear ripped blue jeans and took out her super cool Gucci sneakers to pair with them. Instead of her usual eye liner, I made her eyes a little smoky and have her out on my favourite lipstick, Diva by Mac!

The Beauty Edit

Antonym Cosmetics Antonym Cosmetics, a cruelty-free and environment-friendly brand has recently launched in Pakistan. The brand’s ethos focuses on natural makeup that performs just as well as regular makeup. The woman behind the brand, Valerie Giraud a makeup artist by profession created a line that is gentle on the skin because it’s free from synthetic fragrance, parabens and sulphates. The good stuff doesn’t just stop at the actual makeup though—the product packaging is eco-friendly, sustainable and sturdy so nothing will be breaking or spilling. The makeup range includes baked foundations, highlighter, eye shadows, lipstick pencils, mascara, eye pencils and baked blushes. We were recently sent a few of the products from the range to test out and here’s what we thought of them.

december 25, 2016 | 68

Certified Organic Baked Blush Copper

At first swatch the baked blush in Copper is impressive because it packs pigment and plenty of shimmer so you can skip the highlighter if you’re wearing this. Despite having shimmer, the blush does not have any chunky glitter particles but is instead finely milled mainly due to the innovative baking process that transforms the blush crème into a powder. The blush has a domed shape which is typical of many baked products and a little research from the brand’s website tells us it is because the crème is baked in terracotta pans that bind it into its domed shape. It’s a beautiful blush to look at because before being baked, swirls of colour are added to each blush giving it a unique colour and design. However, a little goes a long way with this product since it is quite pigmented so we would advise a light hand when applying it. It’s housed in cute and sturdy bamboo packaging which ensures that if dropped, the blush won’t shatter.

weekend | lifestyle

The eyeshadow quad comes in a square shaped compact with a mirror and small dual-ended brush applicator which wouldn’t do the shadows justice but if you’re pinched for time, it is fine to use. The Quattro Eyeshadow in Noisette has four neutral colours that are ideal for everyday use; one matte cool-toned brown, and three shimmer shades in champagne, pinky-bronze and a warm dark brown. In the Croisette Quattro Eyeshadow there are two matte shades (a vanilla and black shade) and two shimmer shades (a pink and bronze). We found that the matte shades in both Quattro compacts offered a quite sheer wash of colour. This subtle pigment is more advisable for those seeking a more natural and barely there makeup look. While the matte shades would not make it to our favourites list, the shimmer shades will definitely become regulars in our eyeshadow arsenal because they are more heavily pigmented, and the shades are both versatile and wearable.

Certified Organic Quattro Eyeshadow Croisette/ Noisette

The Lola Lash TOO mascara includes nourishing and moisturising ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, beeswax, Carnauba and almond oil. While a google search reveals that these ingredients are indeed nourishing, we have to admit this isn’t our fave product from the range. We’re pretty picky when it comes to mascaras so we know what we like and what we want in one. While the formula felt nice and lightweight, the impact it made in terms of volume and length was a tad too subtle for our taste. (We may just be from the more is more school of thought!) The packaging was once again sturdy and leakproof, but given the choice we would prefer to splash our cash on one of the other star buys from this range.

Certified Organic Mascara Lola Lash TOO

Animal testing and environment-damaging products are the ugly side of beauty but with more natural makeup brands popping up in the market, there doesn’t have to be one.

december 25, 2016 | 69

Certified Organic Mascara Lola Lash TOO

Simply put, we loved the two brushes that we tried from the range. The brushes have laser-cut synthetic bristles for softness and precision and they are exactly that. While some brushes can feel scratchy on the skin, the Antonym brushes are soft to touch and densely packed which ensure that colour is packed on when applying on the lids or cheeks. The Large Eye Shader Brush is the ideal size to pack on a base colour on the lid and because of its size, it’s a quick job in one swipe of colour. Similarly, the Blush Brush picks up colour easily and applies like a dream on the face but what we enjoyed the most was how soft they felt on the face. The bamboo handles of the brushes are again, sustainable and eco-friendly but also feel quite luxe. There are a few other brushes in the range including a contour brush, a powder brush, a blending brush that needs to be in every MUA’s kit and a Kabuki brush that is calling out our name.

W’s ROVIN ell, what’s the use of W a pair of good eyes that never rove? Weekend’s been going through our fashion files for the week

Maham Lashari

Limited december editiion 18, 2016 | 08| 76

Maham looks lovely in a choker neckline jumpsuit and minimal makeup. The graphic draped jacket lightens up her all black ensemble, making it daytime appropriate.

Mariam

Mariam sports the silhouette of the season in these black megaflare trousers. The neckline on her “looks so soft you want to touch it” grey jumper shows just the perfect flash of skin. A statement bag (which we kind of want to steal) and pink pout complete the look.

Farah Vayani

Weekend’s very own stylista Farah knocks it out of the park in this champagne hued lehnga and dusky pink choli. She keeps her look fresh and feminine with toned down accessories and an ethereal duppatta.

weekend | Fashion

ING eye and these are the people who caught our fancy for either their style, their courage or their star power. Well played!

All cream errthang – monochrome looks reign supreme this season. Minahil’s metallic belt cinches in her waist while complimenting those glam disco ball earrings.

Samina Khan

Tis the season for cosy dressing and Samina looks snug as a bug in this “borrowed from the bf” style grey cardi. Distressed jeans, easy sneakers (heels aren’t always the answer!) and a slick of red lippy complete this laid back chic ensemble.

Alina Rizwan

Alina Rizwan is winter chic in an olive green bodycon midi. The off shoulder neckline is bang on trend and her barely there makeup is perfect for a daytime soiree.

In our spare moments we all love to go on a scenic Instagram stroll so here Team Weekend shares the accounts we love to stalk!

We love how despite being a glamorous model, Rehmat Ajmal has a clear aesthetic to her account with fun, trendy and interesting posts that are so pleasant to look at.

If you can eat all the food you want, take Kumail does the kind of architectural and great photographs of it and make a living landscape photography that’ll make you out of it, why would you want to do anything question where you’ve been all this time and else!? We can’t get over how phenomenalthis why you haven’t seen your country the same food photography page is. way. The guy has a great eye for visual artistry.

Anything to do with dogs, books & cuddles instantly brightens our day. We can’t stress over how adorable this account is, and you only need to be human to be affected by this.

As his bio states, Architect by degree, Event Designer by day, Visual Merchandiser by night, the multi talented Aarij Hashmi has the most interesting personal photos that’ll keep you both impressed and entertained.

Faiyaz Kolia is a photographer and a fashion editor. His account is like a visual story book with every photograph telling a different tale.

Weekend Eats AT Cote Rotie (Alliance Francais)

december 25, 2016 | 86

KARACHI

K

The Experience

arachi is no stranger to amazing eateries which invest in fresh ingredients or have them flown in for a truly luxe experience. The Cote Rotie is one such eatery that offers not only tastebud tantalising dishes but now also hosts the Salt Art soirée events which involve live music – both jazz and otherwise. The ambience here is uplifting with good vibes all round and the big windows allow in natural light which lends an airy feel to everything. On our visit the upbeat music transported us to a place which felt far away from the bustle of Khi-town. Cote Rotie stands out from the usual places that the city offers, with a fresh menu which steers clear of samesy dishes on offer at other venues. We started off with a selection of artisinal breads, thin crust cauliflower pizza and strangely (but deliciously) crispy fish tacos with apple pomegranate salsa. Strange because we’re not especially fans of fish tacos in general

weekend | FOOD december 25, 2016 | 87

(but Faheem Jaffer, the owner was kind enough to send them over for us to try) and we have to say that we are newly converted fans! His other recommendations also scored similarly high marks - the truffle egg & gruyere (cheese) which again wouldn’t have been our first choice was a hit all round the table once sampled. Sticking with the seasonal delights, we also opted for a Halloumi and pomegranate salad. Suffice to say no trip to Cote Rotie will hereafter be complete without this dish being ordered and subsequently devoured with great relish! The fresh delicious flavours made quite the impact on all of us! For mains the roasted Sole with garlic butter and braised leeks was yet another delight. The perfectly cooked fish and creamy sauce left us wanting more (even though we were preeetty full by this point!) Ending the lunch with a White Mocha and biscotti, we are giving Cote Rotie a perfect score on all fronts!
