land of rich culture and traditions, the Kalash Valley and its people seem immensely amusing to the all communities in Pakistan. Is it because of their festivity or their colorful attire or the plain liveliness they carry in their eyes, one can’t really tell. Thoughit might sound bizarre to most but this unique tribe celebrates almost everything. They have festivals throughout the year in which dancing singing and drinking is very common and not only that they also celebrate death. Known as an endangered minority community, and one of the oldest pagan tribes in the world, we

were beyond thrilled to go visit the Kalash Valley during one of their sacred festivals in the month of May. The path that connects Dir and Chitral valley is one of the second most difficult terrains in the world. This road is called the Lowari pass or the Lowari top (10,230ft.),it crosses the Hindu Raj Mountains, a spur of the higher Hindu Kush and is an extremely thrilling journey. There are about sixteen or more breathtaking S-shaped bends while descending the mountains towards the Chitral valley. From there onwards to the Bumburet valley of the Kalash people is a short distance, completely off the road because of the devastation caused by the deadly floods of 2015. A few of the many intriguing facts about these people is that the tribe buries their dead in open coffins and leaves them above the ground, along with a few of the most precious possessions of the deceased. Their belief divides people in two sorts, the Pure and the Impure, and they ritually cleanse their valley in December from the ‘Impure’ outside world. They have a building appointed for women to spend their days inside during menstruation and childbirth as they are considered Impure. Food is delivered inside this building and hands are kept off the boundary walls. Cut off from the world for most of the year the people of Kalash celebrate the arrival of spring in the month of May. They call it the ChillamJoshi festival (one that I and a few of my friends attended in full zeal this year). The first day of this festival is known to be the Milk Day where milk that has been stored for ten days is presented to the gods. They follow a type of ancient polytheistic faith. The people dress up in new clothes (their aesthetic is nothing short of a fashion forward explosion of design and colour) and gather together to dance and sing on the beat of the drum. They even have a special place for this ritual. The Kalash tribe does not look down upon physical interaction and mixing of both the genders and take Joshi as an opportunity to freely choose the ones they want to marry and fall in love

with. Traditionally,the Kalash tribe did not believe in marriage, however they take deep pride in and celebrate love like no other.The festival entails the couple that is attracted to one anotherto run away togetherin order to mark their interest in each other in the eyes of their elders. Then, the elders upon finding out that their children are not around, locate them, threaten them and then eventually agree upon exchanging gifts and marrying them off.Similarly a married woman is free to elope with another person if she wants to, as long as the new husband pays double the amount of gifts to the old husband.It almost feels like a grand scheme that is both thrilling and theatrical but at the same time is a very real component of the Kalash community. The dancing singing and drinking continues till six in the evening after which they walk back to their houses and rest. TheChillamJoshi Festival continues for two to three days and it is one of the most exciting and enchanting things one can experience in life. There cannot be anything more exhilarating than being able to watch, learn and love someone entirely different than one’s own self yet so similar in so many beautiful human ways.

The WeekendTBR (To Be Read) List A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
I have heard mixed reviews about the book that has been hailed as a ‘tour de force’ and not all of them have been positive but I’m still curious to read it. The book follows a group of four men—Jude, JB, Malcolm and Willem, over three decades, from their years as college roommates to later in life. The character Jude, emerges as the novel’s protagonist who has a dark past that he closely guards till present day and the reader gradually finds out the extent of abuse that he has suffered. From what I’ve read and heard so far about this book, it sounds like it could be a trigger for people suffering from mental health and/or abuse sufferers. This is definitely not a light read—you only have to take one look at the hefty book to realise that!

Salt: by Nayyirah Waheed I rarely read poetry but there is something about Nayyirah Waheed’s work that just resonates like no other poetry I’ve ever read. She uses a limited amount of words but every line is filled with heart and meaning and it’s truly beautiful. So for all the poetry lovers out there, this collection is the one for you.
This book sounds so promising because it’s based loosely on Charles Manson’s cult of the ‘60s. Intrigued, right? Who hasn’t grown up weirdly fascinated with notorious serial killers? Emma Cline scored a major book deal and there are talks of a film adaptation in the works, so I’m pretty excited about this one. The book is set in the late ‘60s and follows fourteen-year-old Evie through her summer before she’s shipped off to boarding school. Evie is bored, contemptuous and her parents have recently divorced. One day, she spots a group of girls in the park and follows them to a ranch where she meets Russell who is modeled on Manson and like the reallife cult leader; Russell has attracted a group of young women that worship him. The book begins in the present with an older Evie thinking back to the violence that Russell’s ‘family’ carried out that one summer. I have a feeling this is going to be unputdownable.

The Girls by Emma Cline
After fiction, I love reading political biographies and the Kennedy family has to be America’s most fascinating first families. People rarely know about or remember Rosemary Kennedy, the intellectually disabled member of the Kennedy clan. But she takes centre stage in this biography that records her life, struggles and how her famous family was affected by her. Her ambitious parents feared Rosemary’s intellectual limitations would prove problematic for her siblings’ brilliant careers and this was in a time when mental health was stigmatic. So Rosemary was subjected to a lobotomy at the age of 23 that left her debilitated and thus institutionalised for the rest of her life. This is a well-written and equally well-researched account of a mental health tragedy and of a life that could have been.

Girls on Fire by Robin Wasserman
If there are any fans of YA in the house then you guys will love Robin Wasserman’s Girls on Fire although this one is more adult than most YA novels. The novel is set in a small Western Pennsylvania town in the early ‘90s and the two girls that the book centres on are Hannah Dexter and Lacey Champlain. Their mutual hatred for the popular mean girl at their high school, forges their friendship. From all the reviews I’ve read, this is a ‘terrifying, upsetting and hypnotically beautiful’ book that readers wouldn’t want to put down.

Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler
This is part of Vintage’s Hogarth Shakespeare series where acclaimed authors write contemporary adaptations of the playwright’s work and this one is an adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. I have actually not read The Taming of the Shrew so I look forward to reading a modern rewrite of the play. Kate Battista is a pre-school teacher in Baltimore who lives with her elderly father, an academic on the verge of a scientific breakthrough. The father has a young Eastern European lab assistant whose visa about to expire and Kate is our spinster heroine. You don’t have to have read Shakespeare’s play to connect the dots with this one but I’m curious to see how Anne Tyler has recreated a classic in her own voice.

The home-based enterprise has finally opened doors in Y Block DHA, introducing an extended savoury menu of comfort food with a gourmet twist and desserts that retain Rina’s sought-after signature taste. This week we met up with Chef extraordinaire Batool Mohsin, a self-proclaimed control freak running the show at Rina’s Kitchenette, to discuss career paths, good food and great reviews that keep the crowds coming back for more! Nur Zehra Qadri: When and how did you decide to pursue a career in the restaurant business? Batool Mohsin:It all began with my mother, Rina. She was always into baking and that is where my interest in cooking essentially developed. I took Food and Nutrition in O levels and it was my favourite subject. It’s always been my dream and my passion that has finally come to life.

Tell us about your career path. How and why did you open Rina’s Kitchenette? BM: As I said, my mother was always into cooking and started a home-based bakery at a time when there was hardly anyone in the business. Our dad used to have a travel agency but post the9/11attacks, that affected people in more ways than those obviously recognized,the company fell apart. This is when the whole family started focusing towards my mother’s small endeavor, in hopes of making it a successful enterprise. We
weekend | conversation NZQ: Tell us a bit about your philosophy as a business. BM: Good home cooked food in a clean cosy environment. We’re basically all about comfort food. We only create what we personally love to eat and we’re only selling what we love to eat. There are dishes people don’t like but we still have them on the menu purely because we love them. How often do you eat at your own restaurant? BM: Good Question. Almost never. We will all take a bite here and there but at the end of the day I want to go home and have my saalan roti.
NZQ: What are your day-to-day responsibilities as a restaurant owner/chef? BM: I come to work around 10am. I work on the prep for our coffee service. I work with two teams, one is for our hot kitchen and the other for our dessert kitchen. I need to make sure the display is ready by 3pm and
then onwards the hot kitchen needs to be prepared for dinner service.

NZQ: Tell us about your educational background. Did you pursue any specializations in your field? BM: I was in Lahore Grammar School, then did my undergrad from Lahore School of Economics. After that I went to the South of France to an institute called Gastronomicom in Cap D’adge. Later I did a ‘stage’ in Courchevel which is a high end Ski resort in the French Alps.
NZQ: Did your experience in France enhance your abilities as a Chef/Restauranteur? Would you recommend this path for others entering the field? BM: It was a game changer. It is only after this experience that I knew I had it in me to open a restaurant. That was the moment where I decided I can really do this! It strengthened my confidence and of course I got to learn a lot and cultivate my craft. So I would, of course, recommend it to everyone entering the field. NZQ: Who or what influences you as a food connoisseur? BM: My family! My younger brother Mustafa is very particular about what he eats and keeps giving me ideas and critique. Also, my husband Ali, if he gets bored of a certain dish he wants something different and I take that as a challenge to come up with new

all decided to pool in our resources and worked as a unit and it continues to be so. I started developing recipes, my brother Ammar took care of the art side (quite literally because all those birthday cakes require a creative hand at the icing). Later my younger brother Mustafa took over. Our parents were always the backbone of everything. We are always there for each other, to the extent that Ammar recently resigned from a promising post at an MNC to help me run the business.

NZQ: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your journey so far? BM: Convincing our mom, Rina, to take the leap and open this restaurant. NZQ: What is the most memorable thing you have experienced in your journey so far? BM: The first day when we opened and saw lines and lines of people outside the cafe! I asked my father to take a picture, it was unbelievable!
NZQ: What’s your secret to keeping customers coming in? BM: Good food. Trying to work our best to provide personalised service. I always try to be present at my work space because that is the only way to control and regulate quality and keep the crowds rolling in.

NZQ: On that note, let’s get to know you a little better. Tell us something no one knows about you. BM: I have a real phobia of bananas! NZQ: What is the craziest thing you have ever done? BM: Held a snake!
NZQ: What do you like to do in your free time? BM: Spend time with my husband and search more about food. NZQ: Name one thing on your bucket list. BM: Going to Italy for a culinary course
NZQ: How have the reviews on the restaurant been so far? Anything in particular you would like to share? BM: The reviews are great! The number of repeat customers is just amazing! People keep coming back for more and that is the best review possible. We have had a few bad days of service, teething issues, which will be ironed out by the end of Ramzan hopefully. But people are still coming back and that is all the feedback we need. NZQ: Is there anything else you can tell us about yourself, your career, or the profession that would be interesting or helpful to others aspiring to enter and succeed in the restaurant business?
BM: It’s a really hard business, unless you’re willing to give a 110%, don’t do it! If you are the head chef yourself then it’s even more difficult. You need to be mentally prepared to give 10-14 physical hours a day to your job! I came in prepared because I am a control freak.
NZQ: What is something you will never compromise on? BM: Family
NZQ: Something you will always take out time for? BM: I have no time right now!
NZQ: What is your ultimate dream? BM: Open a small fine dining restaurant in Lahore with outdoor seating

Sleepless in the summer Summers may sound fun and exciting, and I’m sure they can be but because of the terrible load shedding and hot weather, we’re often left sleepless and distressed. Everyone is familiar with the harsh hotness we suffer from during the day and night; and the suffering is only taken up a notch because of the light cuts after every hour or so. The hardest time in the hot summer is usually bedtime, when it’s too hot to sleep and you’re also too sleepy and exhausted to do anything else. To make these summers better, I have rounded up some ways to sleep better this smokin’ hot season. You improve your summer sleep by managing your exposure to light; this is one of the most basic ways of controlling sleep as the outdoor light effects your circadian rhythms. Extra bright light in the early morning is a good thing as it wakes you up feeling fresher and hence, your day begins on time and you tend to sleep on time too; it’s like a sleep cycle. However the exposure to too much light in the evening and night can disturb the same circadian rhythm; so the best way to ensure less light exposure is by dimming the lights in your house and avoiding high brightness electronics before bed. Cooling down the room or yourself is another way to sleep better this season; research shows that people tend to sleep more readily when their core body temperature is falling, and that extreme ambient heat may interfere with the internal cooling process that normally occurs at night. Yes, it’s hard to stay cool, thanks to the awful power cuts at night; but one great way to keep yourself cool is by taking a shower before bed; it cools down your body temperature and helps boost sleep hormones. Working out or doing any activity that causes you to warm up, helps in sleeping better too. Engaging in activities that increase skin temperature actually helps to cool you down; warming the skin hastens internal heat loss by dilating blood vessels close to the skin. The body heat is then released and the body temperature is lowered. I know all these above activities can be tough and time consuming; life’s already very busy as it is.
