Weekend reads with Rehmat Ajmall - Model and Visual Artist by Asmara Ahmed Qaisrani (@TheDoctorReads) Rehmat Ajmall’s searing gaze is familiar to anyone following the high-fashion portfolio of Zara Shahjahan. Featured as the face of the designer’s pret and luxe pret lines, Rehmat has also been featured in campaigns with BTW and Suffuse by Sana Yasir. A cursory glance through her Instagram account shows Rehmat to be a voracious reader as well, geefully captioning her latest haul from Readings in Lahore with #whatholidaysarefor-- a reader after our own heart! We queried Rehmat over email about her current read.
Last book you read/are currently reading?
I’m currently re-reading “The God of Small Things” by Arundhati Roy. I’ll let you in on a little secret of mine; although I’m a slow reader and I hardly get time to catch up, I am almost always reading and rereading bits and pieces of this book.
Is it your usual genre or a different one? Does it tie in with your professional life somehow?
Technically yes, it is my usual genre because I am extremely fond of South Asian literature and that’s what I’m mostly inclined towards. I don’t know but it’s something about the Urdu/Indian names, characters and their stories that light up my heart in a very close-to-home kind of a way. It’s not directly linked to my professional life but on a philosophical level, it does link up to a number of issues that I face due to my professional choices.

Paperback, hardback or e-book? Which is your favourite format?
Hard cover, without an ounce of doubt. I like marking my favorite pages and quotes so that I can revisit them time and again.
“That’s what I love about poetry. The more abstract, the better. You’re not sure what the poet is talking about. You may have an idea, but you can’t be sure. Not a hundred percent. Each word, specifically chosen, could have a million different meanings. Is it a stand-in --a symbol for another idea? Does it fit into a larger, more hidden, metaphor? ...I hated poetry until someone showed me how to appreciate it. He told me to see poetry as a puzzle. It’s up to the reader to decipher the code, or the words, based on everything they know about life and emotions.”
It was recommended to me by a close friend. I actually didn’t give it a try for many months but when I did, I was in absolute awe.
Any other books by that author which you’ve read and liked? What feels different about this one?
Yes, I’ve read “War Talk” and a couple of essays from “The Algebra of Infinite Justice” and “Things that Can and Cannot be Said.” Arundhati Roy has extremely strong and well thought out opinions on many political and global concerns and although, I did enjoy her insights in other pieces, the god of small things outdid them all. It’s fluent and coherent in writing and Roy has put it all together with commendable ease. For me, it’s a unique piece mostly because the characters are delicately crafted and the profound depth of their lives simply reels you in. The book addresses many societal problems like the Indian caste system and patriarchy, but it does it with an intricate web of beautiful stories.
What are you enjoying most about your read? What aspect of it relates to your life currently?
My favorite thing about the book is that it’s a narration; Reading it makes you feel like someone is directly engaging with you. It speaks to me in so many different ways. At times, I only
enjoy the words and how well they have been put together and the vivid style of the author that makes you see, smell and feel the situation as if it was your own. Other times, I deeply sympathize with Ammu and her status as a disgraced outcast because she made the unforgivable mistake of doing something that the society didn’t allow. The book is quite relatable as it’s about all the small things in life that matter and have the power to change hearts. I can’t put a finger on one aspect of my life that it directly relates to but it is about forbidden love and the chains of society; those chains hold us all down in one way or another, whether we realize it or not
What do you not like about it?
It wasn’t long enough! Seriously though, nothing, really. Might sound extremely diplomatic but being an artist myself, I don’t particularly believe in picking flaws in art work since it’s a creation of someone’s heart and soul. If something doesn’t speak to you, leave and move on.
If you could give the author a message, what would it be?
Please write more such novels so that I can hold on to another book so dearly. Oh and, keep slaying!
Would you recommend this book to a friend or an enemy?
A friend! To be honest, I would hate my enemies a little less if they loved the same books as me and that wouldn’t be very favorable for me now, would it? :P

For me, New York is a second home. I hav e been coming here every year sin ce I was a child and exploring this city over lifetime has been nothing les my s than pure delight.

n Island that stretches almost fourteen miles and just over two miles wide, Manhattan packs together more famous icons and attractions into one compact area than any other place on Earth, with limitless events and activities to do. From the Empire State building, Central Park, Ellis Island, Time Square, wide variety of museums and Broadway, to the local flavour of each diverse neighborhood and the hidden treasures they have to offer. Not to forget the other four boroughs: eating ethnic foods in Queens, taking a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, visiting the Bronx zoo, and even Ellis Island where you can enjoy the glorious view of Lady Liberty. For me, the best way to experience New York is to put on some tunes, plug in your headphones, and then just walk aimlessly and endlessly.

While there are multiple reasons to fall in love with New York City, I’ve always praised the energy here. There is an aura of creativity in the air, with wildly imaginative works filling the city galleries and concert halls and a wide range of restaurants, with inventive mashups of global cuisines (many refer to New York as the Culinary Hub of the world) Despite visiting New York for many years, I never got tired of exploring the metropolis. You can cross boroughs with the mere swipe of a metro card and visit vibrant neighborhoods that contain astonishing varieties of different cultures and ethnicities. The people, the food, the art: all come in varieties! For art lovers like me, there is a great selection of museums like the Met, MoMA, or Guggenheim,which are perhaps maybe even some of the best museums in the world. However, the experience often comes with long lines and a frustrating dance to catch a glimpse of art amidst the massive crowds. Opt for one of the city’s hundreds of smaller galleries for a more intimate experience with just a simple google search. This is a city of theater, comedy, Indie cinema, ballet, poetry, readings, burlesque, world music, jazz and so much more. If you can dream it, it’s probably happening in New York. With its dense size and streets filled with eye candy of all sorts - Architectural treasures, Old school cafes, Atmospheric booksellers and intriguing shops - NYC is an urban wanderer’s delight. One can lose themselves in the crowds of Chinatown amidst brightly painted temples, steaming noodle shops and fishmongers, then stroll up to Lolita for enticing boutiques and coffee tasting amongst the craft minded. Every neighborhood offers a dramatically different version of New York City. From the 100 year old Jewish delis of the Upper West side to the twisted cobblestone lanes of Greenwich village, or from the famous red stairs in Time Square to the Flushing Meadows in Queens. The best way to experience New York is to walk its streets and discover its underground subways so you can walk up each time to an experience well worth it - and if you’re like me, you’ll survive on your phone’s GPS. Do as the locals do, and flock towards all the open spaces. Take a Central Park tour, which leads you along the bridge by ways of America’s first major public park. Rent a bike and ride it through the lush green gardens, maybe even stop for a picnic along the way. Or go downtown to Battery Park, an immaculately created series of parks that edge the waterfront - a popular retreat for locals. You can also walk continuously, safe from traffic, from Chelsea Pier to the tip of the island. There are places to play, ride boats, even a view Lady Liberty and a must do would be to hop on to the High Line, an almost two-mile long linear park in Manhattan, made on an old unused railway track, with a view that will make you instantly fall in love with this city. When the sun sinks slowly beyond the Hudson River and luminous skyscrapers light up the night, New York transforms into one grand stage. As Alicia Keys aptly sang it, New York truly is a ‘’concrete Jungle where dreams are made of.” If you’re craving something different than just a good view, make your way down to Bryant Park in the winters and go ice skating under the stars or gather your friends and enjoy the rich variety of restaurants and lounges on the Upper East Side. But, if all else is still not enough, then I just have one piece of advice SHOP TILL YOU DROP!

What is your work influenced by? What was the very first piece you created?
When I was in school, I wrote, produced, directed and designed a play called SALIGIA. Which was quite well received.

How would you describe your pieces?

What does the word Art mean to you?
Art means mastering something, anything. It is ambiguous. I don’t consider myself an artist. I’ve grown up with it, and designing is like second nature to me. I do however think art is acquiring as much knowledge as you can about anything and everything, so that you can become a master; master the art of the senses; seeing, smelling, hearing and speaking.
What kind of art do you most identify with and why?
I identify with art that revolves around space and its occupation. Whether it is the occupation of an apple in front of a blank wall in a photograph, or a woman’s place in society, or an abandoned building waiting to be found again. Everything around us is either occupied or vacant and I’ve always been drawn to this movement.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for?
Who would it be and why? I want to build the perfect house for my parents.
Name a few artists who inspire you. Matthias Weischer,Shahid Abdulla, David Neumann and Giorgio de Chirico
What is your ultimate dream as an artist?
Ultimately, I’d like to have an empire that focuses on all aspects of design, ranging from the interior and exterior of buildings to the wider urban sprawl. I am an advocate of education and want to publish textbooks that focus on revolutionary design in Pakistan. We need to push our boundaries and I want my work to go beyond my own firm. For this I want to have design schools that focus on conceptual projects for photography and architecture, concepts that can be studied at international universities as specimens. God willing,I want to leave a legacy.
Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work?
In college, my final theatre piece was based around the silence of routine and losing one’s own voice in the loudness of said silence. The sound of a ticking clock and shuffling of paper were the only sounds in the play. It was repetitive and it lasted uncomfortably long. I wanted my audience to feel conflict of wanting to leave and also waiting for the conclusion of the play; which was for them to decipher. One audience member whose work I admired, was standing in front of me watching the play. And upon its end, he let out a reflective sigh. I always look for that one audience member, who reflects internally to my pieces, where my audience is in dead silence of acknowledgement. I don’t live for applause.

Jewellery Designer Shafaq Habib

Shafaq Habib is a leading Pakistani jewellery designer who has a global fan following. She started her label, Shafaq Habib House of Jewellery, in the 80’s and revolutionised gold and diamond jewellery. This year she was selected among Pond’s Miracle Women for the year 2016. We met up with this amazing entrepreneur for a conversation on her brand name and her career. Faizan Hussain: What sparked your passion for jewellery? Shafaq Habib: Beautiful things have always attracted me and jewellery has been one of them. I have loved and enjoyed jewellery ever since I was a child. he goths as we all know, love black and any and all of its variations. They can even choose to wear dark blue or red if they’re feeling cheerful. First things first, you absolutely need a pencil that does not smudge and can hold its ground despite the heat, humidity and sweat. Black Up Waterproof Smoky Matt Pencil in Black is your answer. To avoid looking like a panda by the end of the day and staying true to your nature, you must invest in a good concealer that won’t let your eyeliner budge. Makeup Forever’s Ultra HD Concealer has to be your go-to product. Now for the heavily lined eyes, give yourself a line on top of your lashes, and give a smudgy line on the bottom lashes letting it go thinner as you move towards the inner corner your eye. Don’t forget to tight-line and leave the inner bottom rim bare. To complete the look, you need Benefit’s roller lash mascara in order to give you more length than volume, since, let’s not forget it is still a day look and volumizing mascara will be more suitable for your nocturnal affairs. The lips and cheek for this look need to be underplayed or it will look borderline tacky. I suggest ditching the blush and lipstick altogether and opting for a multi-purpose product, Benetint Lip and Cheek Stain by Benefit.

First you need to start off by applying Makeup Forever’s Skin Equalizing Mattifying Primer. This will work like a barrier between your skin and all the sweat and oil that will be screaming to break out in this heat. Next up is Benefits Goof Proof Brow Pencil which is ideal for filling your brows and not leaving any visible lines around due to its ashy brown color. For the eyelashes, I say skip the mascara completely and go for the Sephora Heated Eyelash curler to give you a curl that will not wilt. Give your cheeks a subtle flush that will stay all day with the MAC Pro Longwear Blush in Stubborn, it boasts a non-fading, eight hour long wear and MAC is not the one to fall short on their promises. Lastly, for the lips, you should aim for a long lasting matte lip color that is muted and compliments your skin tone. For the queen b to look like royalty, everything should be in perfect unison. First off, the face must be transformed into a flawless canvas with the help of MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 foundation. The key here is SPF as the queen b will not be found making such a rookie mistake of not wearing sun protection. Then comes the art of concealing dark circles most importantly as they are very sneaky. You think you got them till natural light hits and your concealer utterly fails. To hide dark circles, I suggest swiping Dior’s Fix It 2 in 1 Prime & Color Correct in Apricot instead of a proper concealer as it does the job on its own really well. Next up is Tarte’sAmazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer, contour your face with this to give yourself a healthy, sun-kissed glow and then use Becca’s Champagne Pop highlighter to really pop those cheekbones with a gleamy finish. For the eyes, I suggest skipping any harsh lines, going heavy on the mascara with Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and lightly lining and also smudging your lower lash line with Maybellines Master Drama eye pencil in blue. To really open your eyes, don’t forget to highlight the inner corners of your eyes. For the cheeks to look flushed and dewy, go for Smashbox’s L.A Lights Blendable Lip and Cheek color in Echo and for the lips, skip the matte lip and go for the gloss. I suggest Too Faced Lip Injection in Let’s Flamingle for a pout that just won’t stop asking for attention.

Great Expectations Wedding season is upon us and is there any place more lovely than Lahore in the monsoon? Almost everyone has some wedding coming up and all are busy planning the perfect dress/dance/décor. While a major focus is given to the wedding, seasoned veterans know that the game has just begun and if it is to truly last a lifetime, the important part is the marriage. Whether arranged or love, in the end the marriage itself is a family affair. New brides need not worry about it being such as this can be a good thing or a bad thing. It all depends on your perception. The family is a God given support system which, if utilized well, can help a new couple settle comfortably. However, this requires a modicum of tact on everyone’s part. The new couple should always be given space and time to adjust to each other and their changed positions and added responsibilities. A mere signing of a contract does not equal insta-relationship. That is the basic issue with most new marriages. The lack of patience and the excess of expectations garnered from books, media or other people’s accounts. A marriage is the most unique relationship. Every

marriage is unique to that couple. Every other relationship, we are either born into and must accept, or we choose for ourselves and we can backtrack from if we make a mistake. We have oodles of patience for our family regardless of their actions. We have an inbred loyalty towards them which we may not extend to any other person should that person do what family does at times. Family has the safety net of being family. Friends we seek out are people we like, who we get along with. Even they can be discarded if they cross lines. Even they can be put on the backburner in favor of other commitments. With a spouse, we are supposed to treat someone as family and while we have high expectations, as human beings we find it hard to extend the same. We don’t feel instantly loyal to them. It is something we actually have to work on. In my opinion, it is possibly the only relationship we have to actively work on and keep working on as they are with us every day. Marriage is a work in progress. Trust and loyalty are the cornerstones of any good relationship and these take time to build as time and actions speak for themselves. My advice to new married couples is always this: Be patient and be kind. Kindness is highly underrated. Be kind to one another, and the rest will follow. Be patient and you will be rewarded in time. If there is anyone worthy of your patience and kindness, it is your life partner. This is the person you need to invest in. This investment will yield high returns. The Experience
The white furniture on the wooden floor looked like snow draping on trees which gave the atmosphere a chilled and cozy vibe. I loved the fact that the interior was kept minimal and that it made the place look quite chic and causal. It is important to note that although I have picked a favorite I must admit it was not an easy decision because I am a sucker for Italian food especially when it involves creamy sauces and cheese. From the main course I particularly enjoyed the Ralph Lauren chicken. With the spinach and
cheese filling perfectly meshed together and a crunchy outer layer on top I could tell why this is their most ordered dish; it was delish! Although all the desserts were the perfect combination of sweet, moist chocolate cakes with ice cream, the sizzling brownie was hands down the one that made my belly do a happy dance! This dessert took the phrase melting in my mouth to the most literal meaning ever! Overall we were catered for with great hospitality and the ambience gave such homely and exclusive feels that I think this is definitely going to be my next hangout spot!
