Small Church. Big Heart. Fair Oaks is a neighborhood church that hopes to meet people of all ages where they are and to live our lives together in community. The best example of this is our weekly intergenerational program called LOGOS. Each Wednesday during the school year, adults cook a meal together while children learn, play and create, and a sense of family is built between neighbors. We carry that sense of family throughout the rest of the week, including into our Sunday service where young children and seniors alike are genuinely involved in leading worship each week. LOGOS begins Wednesday, September 25, and we’d love for you and your family to join us!

W
hat remains when the church building is stripped away? Good Shepherd has learned that lesson in the past year after a fire made the structure unusable in September 2018. Worship and daily operations moved to the large building north of Scoville Park, First Baptist Church at 820 Ontario in Oak Park. While it takes a little more work to find us, new people continue to be drawn to Good Shepherd. A value of diversity and inclusivity, welcoming all into the church community regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status are not just words on the website, but lived-out practices that are found upon entering the faith community. Worship may look and feel different in the rented space, but a vibrancy continues to be felt. Whether a teenager playing an Irish jig on the violin, a college student playing an original composition on the marimba, or a small jazz band riffing on familiar hymns, new life and energy continue to fill the worship programming. This same life and energy are found in the 80+ children who participate in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.
Since social ministry and justice advocacy weren’t dependent upon the building, it continued after the fire without skipping a beat. Good Shepherd is active in local, national, and global ministries. This year members began attending immigration court under the AMMPARO program to help migrant children find a lawyer. Tutors continued to work with over 40 students at Kidz Express, a program in the south Austin neighborhood started by Good Shepherd over 25 years ago. Members support CROPWalk, Housing Forward, United Power for Action and Justice, and Beyond Hunger, among others. Sustainability has been a lens in the many choices for the rebuild and gardens. As a member of Faith in Place, a group of local congregations committed to green practices and striving to make our events zero waste, we value doing things in a way that retain God’s vision for creation. ur world has no end of evil, no shortage of suffering. So what do we do, people of God? We wait for the Jesus who has already shown up and we respond as if he’s already here. Because he is.” These words are from Pastor Dave Lyle’s on Sunday, August 25, at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest. Preaching at Grace is grounded in God’s word and centered on the cross of Christ. These gifts from God bring hope to our everyday lives. Word and sacrament are at the heart of the Grace community’s life together. The congregation gathers for worship on Sunday mornings at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Grace’s liturgical worship is enlivened by vibrant congregational singing and a tradition of musical excellence. Children’s sermons ensure that there is a take-away message even for young worshipers. The 9:45 a.m. education hour on Sunday mornings offers classes for children age 3 and up, as well as Teen Talk and programs for adults. Child care is available in the church nursery during the education hour as well as during worship services.
Grace’s Bach Cantata Vespers offer additional opportunities for worship enriched by music. The first cantata of the 2019-20 season, on Sunday, September 29, is Bach’s festive “They Sing With Joy of Victory,” BWV 149. The instrumental prelude to the service at 3:45 p.m. is a concerto by Bach’s contemporary George Frederick Handel. Grace Lutheran School serves children from three-year-old preschool through 8th grade, offering students excellence in faith-based education, as well as a wealth of extracurricular opportunities. Beforeschool and after-school care is available for children age 4 and up. Grace Church celebrates its German heritage every fall by inviting the community to its annual Oktoberfest. This year’s festivities take place on Sunday, October 6, 4–7 p.m. Tickets (available online at GraceRiverForest.org) include all food and beverages, including local craft beer. et’s get out an old idea we’ve forgotten – Church is a great place to be together!
Of course, we would love you to join us in worship and Bible study. But, if you aren’t ready for that, we still want to get to know you, our neighbor. Join us in our community garden. It is our gift to our neighborhood. In addition to providing garden plots, we also host events such as the free Annual Corn Boil and Ice Cream Social. These are great times to meet our neighbors. Like to sew? We make quilts to give to people locally and world-wide in our quilting group Sew What! Can’t sew – we’d be glad to teach you. Best of all, there is time to talk and get to know each other. Do you like music? St. John hosts a number of concerts during the year. Some are free. Like to sing? We have several adult and children’s choirs. Our neighbors are welcome to sing with us.
We are happy to share our space with other neighborhood organizations such as Housing Forward, Alcoholics Anonymous, Boy Scouts - including a charter female troop, and other nonprofit groups. In partnership with the West Cook YMCA, St. John provides space for children’s summer and after-school programs. We share our space with the Still Waters Preschool Co-Op. A
faith-filled and diverse St. Edmund community gathers weekly to be nourished by Christ in Word and Eucharist. So strengthened, we are sent forth into the world to love our neighbor. St. Edmund parishioners participate in many outreach ministries, such as: weekly staffing of Housing Forward homeless shelter (formerly P.A.D.S.), ongoing support of the OPRF Food Pantry with food drives, monetary contributions, diaper and adult undergarment collections, and fresh produce from our parish Peace Garden. Other ministries involve: Respect Life, clothing drives, domestic violence awareness and support, peace and justice outreach, ministry to the homebound and hospitalized, monthly vigil to end gun violence, and a Green Team to implement Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, to name only a few.
We welcome the influx of new residents in our downtown area, and new people who may be looking for a vibrant Catholic Faith Community. We are walking distance from these new developments and look forward to welcoming our new neighbors. We are excited that the Chicago Architecture Foundation again has chosen St. Edmund Church as a site for this year’s Open House Chicago, on October 19 & 20. St. Edmund Church, designed by Henry J. Schlacks, with magnificent stained glass F. X. Zeittler windows from Munich, Germany and a stunning ceiling designed by John Mallis is worth visiting.
