OPRF resets math curriculum Final OK pending to blend Algebra and Geometry over three years By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Oak Park and River Forest High School will begin changing the way it teaches the first three years of math at the school next year. The school will be replacing separate courses in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II with three years of an integrated math curriculum that combines algebra and geometry with other elements of math. “It’s a better way to teach math,” OPRF Math Division Chairwoman Julie Frey told the District 200 Board of Education at its Oct. 13 Committee of the Whole Meeting. Frey said that Lockport High School has taught math in an integrated way for the last 10 years and that the states of New York and Utah are teaching math in an integrated way as are many countries around the world including Canada, China and England. “We’re not reinventing anything,” Frey said.
