Owner of the Irish Times Pub in Brookfield How long have you owned the Irish Times? Prior to taking on this role, how long had you been in the community? I purchased Irish Times from my Uncle Martin Cosgrave in 2008. He established the pub and restaurant in 1991, this will be our 27th year of business in 2018. What brought you here? The first time I came to Brookfield was in June 1998 to visit my uncle. I loved it so much that I returned for a visit every summer after that whilst I was in university. Initially, I came to visit family. Then, my trips here were to see the friends that I had made during my stays in Brookfield, many of whom have come to visit us over the years in my hometown of Athenry County, Galway. I am engaged to a local lady, Lauren, who grew up on Vernon Avenue. in Brookfield, so we hope to continue to live, work and have our own family in Brookfield for another generation or two at Irish Times. What keeps you here? Too many things to mention! I especially love the customers, my friends, Lauren and the people I work with at Irish Times. I really enjoy the lovely summers. We are blessed to have an incredible city like Chicago right on our doorstep where the skyline is always changing, and there is always something interesting and fun to see and do no matter what season or time of year it is.
I have to say I really enjoy and get great satisfaction from events and happenings at Irish Times too. What gets you out of bed in the morning? My amazing 10-year-old daughter Emma (who helped me with the answers). What keeps you up at night? Jetlag. What do you love about Brookfield? The people of Brookfield are so similar to the people I grew up with in Athenry in Ireland, they have always been so friendly, helpful and kind. There is an amazing community spirit in town, and everyone has always been so welcoming. My friends and family that visit from Ireland always remark on how lovely everyone is here and how much like home it is in Brookfield. They say
that the Irish are famous for their hospitality, but I have never felt anywhere that is as close to home as here! There are lovely parks for everyone to enjoy and having three Metra stops and trains almost every hour in town makes trips downtown or to the or western suburbs effortless. We are very fortunate to have such a massive attraction in the village as Brookfield Zoo with over 2 million visitors every year. The staff are amazing there and the zoo brings so many people to the area, which really helps a lot of the local businesses. I have brilliant neighbors all around me, the people that enjoy the pub, all of the people at the village of Brookfield, from the public works to police officers, are fantastic, and they work very hard to continue to develop and maintain a fantastic, safe community for everyone to live, be happy and enjoy.

Getting to know CAMILLE SILVERMAN
Executive Director of the Riverside Arts Center How long have you been working for the Riverside Arts Center? I have been working for Riverside Arts Center (RAC) since March 2017. RAC will be turning 25 years old this October. For 25 years RAC has been serving Riverside and the greater Chicago area. What brought you here? RAC had announced an opening for an executive director. I applied and visited an opening called “Good Machines.” I was impressed with the community and the exhibit. After my visit and talking to so many artists who had been involved with RAC, I hoped that I would soon become a part of this highly creative team of curators and instructors. What keeps you here? A passionate staff and board gives me great energy, and also keeps me on my toes. Riverside is a great place to work. Everything you need is only blocks away, and as you begin to stroll around the community you can build friendships in and outside of the work place rather quickly. What gets you out of bed in the morning? I enjoy the play between nonprofits, businesses, and community. One of my favorite things that happened most recently was the connection between institutions when the Paul Gauguin exhibit was showing at the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Riverside Public Library gave a talk on Gauguin and RAC started a summer figure drawing program. If people were interested in
working with a live model, like Gauguin did, RAC provided that experience. We were all in-sync with supporting a deeper level of knowledge and artistic process. I feel that institutions are at their best when they complement each other’s programs; it serves to deepen everyone’s experience. This sort of energy and conversation brings people in to explore our community as a hub of cultural exchange. We hope our businesses see new people coming in because of RAC’s education and exhibition programming. It is exciting to see how RAC can give back on so many different levels. Building connections helps me jump out of bed every morning, because we have so much potential and I wake up feeling it.
What keeps you up at night? I try not to let myself get in late-night worrying loops about my job or responsibilities to RAC. It does happen, but it generally tends to make “mountains out of mole hills.” Every week I could certainly stress out about something new and make it a bigger issue than it has to be. If I did not have a supportive board and administrators like Claudine Ise (exhibitions) and Shawn Vincent (education) there would be a lot of ruminating at night. What do you love about Riverside? Right now, I really love working at RAC and being a shopper at Riverside Foods. I feel like when I am at these places, I am in community hubs, working and shopping for the greater good. In the spring it will be the experience of riding my bike in Riverside.

Chief of Police in North Riverside How long have you been the Chief of Police in North Riverside? Prior to taking on this role, how long had you been in the community? I have been chief of police for a month and a half, but I have been a police officer with the village of North Riverside for the last 30 years. I was hired January 1, 1989. The last four and one half years, I served under retired Chief Lane Niemann as his deputy chief. What brought you here? As kids my mom and dad would bring us to the North Riverside Park Mall for lunch. There was a restaurant inside the mall that looked like an airplane that was a big deal back in the day. So, when I heard North Riverside was testing for police officers, I came and applied.
What keeps you here? The people! The people I work with and the citizens in North Riverside are truly wonderful people. I love working here. What gets you out of bed in the morning? My job! I really love what I do and I love being around and helping people. What keeps you up at night? My husband’s snoring. No, I’m kidding, I sleep very well knowing I have a great police department with welltrained men and women who are dedicated to keeping North Riverside safe. What do you love about North Riverside? It’s a small town with a big heart. That’s our slogan, but I have to use it because it is really true. Our residents in North Riverside are great people, and it is an honor to have spent my entire career in law enforcement here.

How long has BrightLeaf Homes been operating in Brookfield? BrightLeaf has been building homes in Brookfield since 2012. We build in other cities in the Near West suburbs, and in Brookfield alone we’ve built 10 new homes since 2013 along with the 9-unit apartment building near downtown Brookfield. We have another project coming up for sale in the spring on Blanchan. What brought you here? I began living in Brookfield in 2009. I moved here to be in the suburbs where I worked at a previous job, but also to be close to Metra and other transportation into the city. Brookfield was an affordable alternative for me compared to LaGrange and Riverside. BrightLeaf as a business followed a similar path. We started building in Brookfield because it is straight forward community to build homes in and appeals to our primary target demographic of young professionals moving out of the city looking for good schools and affordable new construction homes.

What keeps you here? Relatively affordable housing and excellent access to transportation is important to our clients, so it remains important to us. What gets you out of bed in the morning? The motto “Wake Up, Kick Ass, Repeat.” Maybe not appropriate to publish but it’s the truth. What keeps you awake at night? There are 10 people working at BrightLeaf today and dozens more that work with BrightLeaf through our trade partners that actually build or supply materials for our homes of the future. I and the other two partners at BrightLeaf have an unspoken responsibility to all of them to operate and grow a successful company, and that responsibility, while rewarding, can be challenging. What do you love about the town? Brookfield is a relatively affordable town to build new construction homes in and they have been reasonable to work with in permitting and planning for new development or redevelopment.

Getting to know RONNIE CAREY
Transition Specialist at RiversideBrookfield High School and works with ShredderWorks, a document destruction micro-enterprise designed to support special education students in business-based education and training, community services and to promote community partnerships. How long have you been working with ShredderWorks at RBHS? ShredderWorks began in 2002. I joined the team in 2006. What brought you to the community? I had heard what a unique and wonderful school Riverside-Brookfield High School was, and I took an opportunity to interview when invited. It is has lived up to its reputation. What keeps you here? The students, families and faculty are great to work with and very supportive. The local employers I get to meet and work with are also amazing. It is really special when you get to see a student gaining skills and enjoying a work experi-
ence and at the same time see a business benefit from working with the students as well. What gets you out of bed in the morning? My family, friends and work. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to help people and make a difference every day. At least I try to! What keeps you awake at night? There are still so many people with disabilities that need the benefits of employment; not just monetarily but also
with a sense of community, being able to use their skills to help others, etc. What do you love about Riverside and Brookfield? For me, it comes down to people. The people in this area are friendly, down to earth and really care about each other and their communities. One of my favorite days at RBHS is the Day of Service. It is great to see so many young people donating time to help their communities. They come in with a great attitude and readiness to help.
