he Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) repealed the deduction for entertainment, amusement or recreation expenses that are directly related to or associated with the active conduct of the taxpayerâ€™s trade or business. The tax code expressly disallows a deduction for any activity or facility, which is of a type generally considered to constitute entertainment, amusement or recreation. Now more than ever it is more important to track your business meals, travel and lodging, which are deductible, as a separate expense detached from any event or facility that is generally considered an entertainment expense, which is not deductible. For example: You attend a business convention at a golf course in 2018. The travel and lodging expenses related to

getting to the business convention are still deductible as discussed above. During your stay, you make a connection and invite your prospect out to lunch and a round of golf. Your lunch is still deductible; however, the round of golf is no longer a deductible expense. To complicate this scenario, if the hotel package you purchased for the convention included a round of golf, the value of the round of golf is treated as entertainment and must be distinguished from the lodging expense as a separate nondeductible item.

he golf season is underway for boys and girls high school teams in Illinois. Here’s a look at the Riverside-Brookfield and Lyons Township squads a few matches into the

RBHS junior Kiki Keen has already shown her physical ability as a first-time state qualifier last season. However, it’s Keen’s mental strength that has solidified her standing as the Bulldogs’ best golfer. “I think golf is about 70 percent mental and 30 percent physical,” Keen said. “The mental game is what can really destroy players. I try to go one shot at a time and not worry too much about the outcome.” Keen, an all-conference and all-tournament Metro Suburban Conference player in 2018, averaged a score of 42 per nine holes last season. Along with Keen, returner Eva Funaki and transfer student Ava Vjestica are pegged as team leaders by first-year coach Doug Schultz.
