Riverside celebrates 150th anniversary

Happy Harley Joins RBHS team School’s golden retriever facility dog brings calming presence to school

The village went all out with its festival and soiree Aug. 9

He’s shorter than all faculty and staff at Riverside-Brookfield High School, and has a full body of hair, to boot. But he’s just as friendly and serves an important purpose at the school. He’s Harley, a golden retriever that is RB’s new facility dog. In fact, his new nickname is Happy Harley. He’s been at school off and on for the past couple of years but is now full time. His handler is Dave Mannon, assistant principal for student affairs, who said Harley has made a splash already so early into the school year. “He’s known, when he’s out and about,” Mannon said. “Freshman orientation was this morning, and he was going up and down the bleachers in the gym, we were in the hallway and things like that. “We sent the message out and it went viral. It was one of our most liked pages on our social media feeds.” RB Superintendent Kevin Skinkis is See HARLEY on page 12

A SMILING PUP: Harley is going full-time this fall as Riverside-Brookfield High School’s facility dog.

Riverside residents and officials alike went all out Saturday to mark the village’s 150th anniversary of its official incorporation in 1875. At the Sesquicentennial Festival, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Guthrie Park, many of Riverside’s organizations showed up with games, entertainment or food. There were classic cars, a dunk tank, cornhole, Jenga, a historical photoshoot with costumes, face painting, and other historical arts, crafts and games to bring attendees back to 1875. At the Sesquicentennial Soiree, where the 150 ticketed guests dressed to the nines, attendees were treated to complimentary hors d’oeuvres, a champaign toast and live music from the Brian Patti Orchestra, along with words from trustees Aberdeen Marsh-Ozga and Alex Gallegos, who led the planning efforts for both events, and Village President Doug Pollock.
