RBHS athletic trainers keep Bulldogs on track (and field)

Brookfield may create a new TIF district

After their first year as Riverside Brookfield High School’s first full-time athletic trainers, Stephanie Smith and Jasmine Smith (not related) already have experienced a full range of situations and emotions with Bulldogs in every sport. “You deal with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” Stephanie said. “You just have to be able to compose yourself and sometimes you cry a little bit with the kids. A lot of times, usually, hopefully, we’re giving high-fives. We’re super-happy for them. There are times where it’s tough and you don’t want to tell them [they can’t play], but it’s part of the job.” Their second school year begins Monday, Aug. 11 with the official start of fall sports after a busy summer with boys basketball’s Summer Shootout in June and various sports camps. Head athletic trainer Stephanie and assistant athletic trainer Jasmine were hired the same day. They both officially began July 1, 2024 without ever meeting each other. See TRAINERS on page 4

Brookfield officials are looking into establishing a new tax-increment finance district near Ogden Avenue and the Congress Park area to encourage private development at villageowned properties. Brookfield already has one TIF district along Ogden Avenue from Eberly Avenue to Custer Avenue and another near Congress Park, but village officials said their impending expirations — in 2031 and 2034, respectively — make them less valuable for developers. “As a rule of thumb, from a financial perspective, most developers are looking for TIF monies that are within a 10-year range, so anything See TIF on page 10
