What’s older than the Declaration of Independence? Believe it or not: the United States Postal Service. The organization now known as the USPS was established in July 1775 — one year before the 13 original colonies declared themselves to be their own nation. This week, the agency celebrates its semi quincentennial with a creative new stamp design featuring artwork by Riverside’s cartoonist extraordinaire Chris Ware. See CHRIS WARE on page 8

POWER OF OBSERVATION: Riverside’s Chris Ware drew a sheet of 20 stamps tracing a busy postal carrier’s journey through an urban landscape across four seasons.
A festival of short, one-act plays celebrating Riverside’s past, present and future is coming to town this weekend to celebrate the village’s 150th anniversary of incorporation this year. Produced by the Riverside Theater Guild and Glaser Players, “Bends in the River” will be performed on Aug. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. at L.J. Hauser Junior High School.
