Growing up Brookfield
Mary Phillips’ roots run deep in a village where she’s lived for more than 90 years By BOB UPHUES

or the record, Mary Phillips doesn’t think she is actually Brookfield’s oldest resident. But being the good sport she is, Phillips will be riding in an open-top, 19th-century carriage drawn by a horse in today’s Fourth of July parade, a symbol of the village’s historic past as residents mark Brookfield’s 125th birthday. While, she may not be the oldest resident of the village, the 92-year-old Phillips has family roots that just might be the deepest. Phillips has lived in the same two-story frame house on Henrietta Avenue since she was an infant — she was born in Feb-
ruary 1926 — and she and her family have been, and still are, connected to past and present businesses, schools, fraternal organizations and even local government. Asked about being in the spotlight at the parade marking the village’s quasquicentennial, Phillips was about as honest as you might expect. “It’s a pain in the butt,” she said with a sidelong glance at her granddaughter, Nicole, who heard about the village’s efforts to find the oldest resident for the parade on Facebook and talked Mary into it. A proud Bohemian, the former Mary Sedivy — she says it’s actually pronounced “shed-jivy” — was born in Berwyn to a pair of Czechoslovakian immigrants. See PHILLIPS on page 12

Historic Riverside Lawn home destroyed by fire Cause being investigated, but blaze appears ‘suspicious’
By BOB UPHUES Editor
The last historic home left standing in Riverside Lawn burned to the ground during
the early morning hours of June 28, ending for good any speculation about whether it or any part of it would be saved for posterity. Firefighters were called to 3744 Stanley Ave. in unincorporated Riverside Town-
ship about 1:50 a.m., according to Lyons Fire Chief Gordon Nord. By the time engines arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames, he said. Because the house has been vacant
for more than a year and the protective metal shutters over the house’s lowerfloor windows appeared not to have been See FIRE on page 10

Call to develop Brookfield Bowl gets one response Village will look to negotiate deal with Tartan Builders
By BOB UPHUES
sponse to its Request for Qualifications, Greifer said he was glad the village opened the redevelopment process to others and that he’s looking forward to hammering out a redevelopment agreement with Tartan Builders. A schedule included in the village’s bowling alley RFQ suggested a redevelopment agreement could be inked by the beginning of August. That remains to be seen, however. The Brookfield Village Board likely will discuss next steps at its committee of the whole meeting on July 9.
Editor
When the village of Brookfield issued a Request for Qualifications from builders interested in redeveloping the vacant Brookfield Bowl property at 3415 Maple Ave. back in May, Community and Economic Development Director Nicholas Greifer said he didn’t think there would be many responses because it was a “tricky site to develop.” He was right. At the June 22 deadline, the village received exactly one response — from the development company, Tartan Builders. The village has been working with them on the site since early 2018. “There have been a lot of cursory reviews of the site, but Tartan was the first and only one to put some skin in the game and show serious interest,” said Greifer, who added that he’s given tours of the shuttered bowling alley on a monthly basis to investors, developers and restaurateurs. Brookfield acquired the bowling alley and parking lot to the north of it in 2014 and 2016, reBrookfield Bowl, 3415 Maple Ave. spectively, using Cook County’s no-cash bid process for property tive senior living facility. tax delinquent structures. Congress Park deal in limbo Meanwhile, negotiations with another company on a redevelopment agreement for village-owned land near the Congress Park train station appears to be in FILE limbo. Greifer called the prospect of Troutman and Dams and the village sealing a deal to develop the former Brookfield Moose land at 4000 DuBois Blvd. an “open question.” “There’s no news on Congress Park,” said Greifer. “We’ll circle back to that after we focus on the bowling alley. With the new comprehensive plan in place, we’ll see if any new ideas emanate from that.” Last fall the village conducted a similar RFQ for the former Brookfield Moose site and selected the commercial real estate development firm Troutman and Dams as the company with which it would seek to ink a redevelopment agreement. Troutman and Dams had proposed a pair of five-story, 24-unit residential buildings for the site. But now it appears a deal isn’t happening. “It’s an open question who would be the developer at that site,” Greifer said.

Woman robbed of cellphone she wanted to sell
A 62-year-old Brookfield woman called police on June 28 to report she was robbed while attempting to sell an iPhone to someone responding to an online advertisement she had placed. According to the police report, the victim posted an ad on Facebook Marketplace for a rose gold iPhone 7, which she bought for more than $7,000 less than two years ago and was selling for $225. Someone named “April” responded to the ad, stating she was interested in buying the phone. However, due to mobility issues, she was sending her grandson to pick it up. The victim gave “April” her home address. About 3:10 p.m. on June 28, three men between the ages of 18 and 21 showed up at the victim’s house. While talking to the men about the phone, one of them snatched it from the victim’s hand and all three men ran away. Police advised the victim not to sell any other online items unless she was accompanied by someone or was capable of completing the sale at the Brookfield Police Department.

■ North Riverside police responded to the 2300 block of 2nd Avenue on the evening of June 22 after someone called to report that a home had been burglarized. The victim told police he’d returned to the house, which was lost to foreclosure, in order to remove his belongings. According to the victim, the party who bought the home gave him until June 30 to remove his property. At 4 p.m. on June 22, the victim returned to the home and found the front door deadbolt lock had been drilled out. Inside, someone had rummaged through his belongings and tried to gain entry to a safe. Among the items missing were three suits, golf clubs and personal papers. Two days earlier, the victim had been notified that his bank account information had been used by someone out of state. ■ A resident of the 2900 block of Harlem Avenue, Riverside, called police on June 29 about 4:40 p.m. after he arrived home to find that someone had attempted to break into the building. The resident said he arrived home about 4:10 p.m. and observed two men in a vehicle at the property. The victim confronted the two men, who told him they were waiting for someone before driving away. After the men left, the resident said he observed the rear door to a vacant groundfloor unit ajar. He also observed pry marks on the door. In addition, according to police, there were pry marks on the interior front entrance door.
No items were missing from the unit as it was vacant, police reported.
Vehicles stolen ■ North
Riverside police responded to the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, on June 19 about 4:45 p.m. after a 33-year-old Hometown man called to report that his 2008 Hyundai Sonata had been stolen from the east parking lot. The victim told police he parked the car about 1:30 p.m. and went inside to see a movie with his two daughters. Inside the theater, the victim placed his car keys in a cup holder on the arm of his seat and then went to the concession stand to get some snacks for his kids. When he returned from the concession stand, the victim observed a woman sitting next to his daughters, in the seat he had chosen earlier. When the victim asked the woman to move, she reportedly refused, which led to an argument. The theater manager intervened and showed the victim and his daughters to new seats, but the victim forgot his keys in the cup holder. After the movie let out, the victim went to retrieve his keys, but they were gone. When he went to check on his vehicle, he found it was gone, too. ■ A resident of the 9200 block of Cermak Road, North Riverside, called police on the afternoon of June 21 to report that her exboyfriend had stolen her silver Honda Odyssey minivan while she was at a court hearing. The previous day, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, reportedly said he was going to take the vehicle, even though he was allegedly confined to house arrest in Chicago. Police attempted to contact the woman’s exboyfriend multiple times, without success.
Bike stolen in a flash A resident of the 3800 block of Cleveland Avenue, Brookfield, reported he took a bicycle out of his garage and placed it alongside the building about 5 p.m. on June 28. He then went inside to close the overhead garage door and exited less than a minute later to find that the orange Raleigh bike, valued at $400, was gone. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, June 19 and July 1, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Forest preserves roll out dockless bikeshare program Cermak Woods station among the first to go live; others to follow
By BOB UPHUES Editor
Interested in cycling along the bike paths comprising Cook County Forest Preserve District’s trail network but don’t have a bike or don’t want to lug one along? There’s an app for that. And a bike as well. Last week, the Cook County Forest Preserve District rolled out a new dockless bike-sharing pilot program to make it easier for people to enjoy bicycling the more than 300 miles of trails in the system. “Not everyone who comes to the forest preserves owns a bike, so this is a great opportunity for Cook County residents and visitors,” said Cook County Forest Preserve District President Toni Preckwinkle in a press release. “Expanding our bikeshare program is a great way to get more people to enjoy the outdoors and our beautiful trails.” Among the first of the roughly 25 dockless bike stations to go live last week was a location in the parking

In the coming weeks, the rest of the 50 stations — giving access to 500 bikes — will be activated throughout the forest preserve sys-
tem, including several nearby locations along the Salt Creek Trail, starting at the parking lot of the Brookfield Woods, on 31st Street just west of McCormick Avenue; in the parking lot of the 26th Street Woods, between Harrison and Mor-

gan avenues in LaGrange Park; and in the lot at the Brezina Woods Picnic Grove, whose entrance is on LaGrange Road between Cermak Road and Scotdale Road in LaGrange Park. There will also be two dockless stations in Bemis Woods — one in Bemis North and one in Bemis South — in Western Springs west of Wolf Road. To the north of the Landmark’s area, there will be a station in the parking lot of Miller Meadow, on First Avenue, across the street from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and at the Cook County Forest Preserve District headquarters at 536 N. Harlem Ave. (at Lake Street) in River Forest. The dockless bike rental idea isn’t exactly new to the Cook County Forest Preserve District, but it’s not surprising if you hadn’t run into it around here. Back in 2015, the forest preserve district partnered with Bike and Roll Chicago to set up a half-dozen bike share stations in farflung locations, mainly in northern
suburbs and Chicago’s far north side. The system supported just 50 bikes and the bikes were docked at stations. Bike and Roll Chicago, which is still a partner as the system expands, is charged with maintaining the fleet of blue bicycles, emblazoned with the words “Bike the Preserves.” And the addition of a new partner — a mobile app called HOPR — the forest preserve district is able to ditch the docks and allow people to download the app onto the smartphones or tablets and use it to unlock and re-park bikes at any of the hubs in the system. Users can opt to pay $2.50 for a 30-minute trip (plus 10 cents per each additional minute) or by a $60 seasonal membership for 90 minutes of ride time (plus 10 cents per additional minute) per day through November. The app can be downloaded from the App Store on your smartphone, and information is available at gohopr.com/chicagoland.

Brookfield library board mulls loan for expansion Would not need any action or input from village board
By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
The Brookfield Public Library Board of Trustees is considering borrowing money from a bank to get enough money for the building’s expansion. The library board is considering a secondchoice expansion plan to extend the library out into what is now sidewalk and parking spots on the south side of Lincoln Avenue after learning that the Brookfield Village Board was not likely to approve a previous expansion plan that would have closed off Lincoln Avenue. The plan the board is now considering would add about 11,400 square feet to the library along the Lincoln Avenue at a cost of about $8.7 million. Currently, the library has a little more than $5.2 million in reserves and expects to have about $5.7 million by the end of 2018. As a result, the library board would likely have to borrow at least $3 million, probably more, if they decide to go ahead with the current plan, unless charitable contributions reduce the amount that the library needs to borrow.
“We’re considering all our options and that is one of our options,” said Linda Kampschroeder, the president of the library board. “We are seriously considering it, but we haven’t said that’s what we’re going to do.” Last week at a special board meeting, the library’s financial advisor, Linda Matkowski, the chief operating officer of the St. Louis-based Stern Brothers, briefed the board for more than an hour about its options and what getting a bank loan would entail. If the library got a bank loan, it would issue debt certificates. Matkowski said that banks would do an intensive review of the library’s finances before lending it money, because such a loan would not be backed by a specific source of revenue, such as a property tax levy. Instead, the library would have to pay off the loan out of general operating funds. “Somebody’s going to have to really commit to you guys,” Matkowski told the board. “They are basically doing an unsecured loan to you.” But the library’s strong financial condition would help the library in the eyes of banks. “Your financial statements are super im-
pressive,” Matkowski told the board. One possible lender to the library is the First National Bank of Brookfield, which already has a financial relationship with the library. Matkowski said if the board decides to seek a bank loan, she would shop the loan to perhaps 10 to 20 banks. It is possible that a consortium of banks might join together to make the loan to mitigate the risk to any one bank. From the library’s perspective, one advantage of a bank loan is that it would not require any approval from the Brookfield Village Board and would not affect the financial situation of the village. “The debt doesn’t even have to be discussed with the village,” Matkowski said. Another option for the library would be to hold off on any expansion and keep socking away money until it can pay for an expansion without borrowing. However, that would take at least another six years. The library board tabled a proposed contract to pay Matkowski and her firm $45,000 for financial advice and work to secure a loan and explore all options. The library board has scheduled a special meeting for July 9 to consider its options
and make some decisions about whether to pursue a bank loan. “At some point we have to stop gathering information and move forward,” Kampschroeder said. The library has also started a capital campaign to raise money for an addition through charitable donations. A non-profit foundation called The Foundation for the Brookfield Public Library was created several months ago to solicit large contributions to help pay for an expansion. The foundation has yet to raise any money, but last week Library Director Kimberly Coughran told library board trustees that she will meet this month with a few potential donors. “I have reached out to the library’s biggest advocates/supporters and have secured inperson appointments with them for early July,” Coughran wrote in her June director’s report. Coughran declined to tell the Landmark how many potential donors she will be meeting with this month. “Because the donors may wish to remain anonymous, I’m not going to say anything,” Coughran said.
Lacrosse may become official sport at RBHS After 2 years as non-sanctioned clubs, teams seek school support
By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Boys and girls lacrosse are poised to become official school sports at RiversideBrookfield High School next year. At the June 12 meeting of District 208 Board of Education, the school’s administration presented a proposal to make boys and girls lacrosse official school sports in 2018-19, and the school board is expected to vote on the proposal on July 10. There are the 26 sports teams currently at RBHS. Boys and girls lacrosse have been club sports at for the past two years, but club sports operate without significant funding from the school and do not participate in Illinois High School Association state championship tournaments. Assistant Principal for Student Affairs Dave Mannon told the school board that it would cost the school approximately $20,000 to make boys and girls lacrosse official school sports. Last year, the boys lacrosse club team played 10 games while the girls team played eight. Money for the club teams came from donations and fundraising. Some equipment was donated. “It is a costly sport,” Mannon told the
school board, noting that boys lacrosse players wear shoulder pads and helmets while girls only wear googles. More physical contact is allowed in boys lacrosse than girls lacrosse. Players typically buy their own lacrosse sticks, Mannon said. Lacrosse is fast-growing sport and last year became officially sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Seventy-eight boys teams participated in the official first IHSA state lacrosse tournament in May as did 58 girls teams. Almost all of the high schools currently playing lacrosse are in the Chicago area. Lyons Township High School, which had a club team for years, fielded officially sanctioned boys and girls lacrosse teams last year. “I see this as a thriving sport,” Mannon said. “It’s very popular in the area.” A number of lacrosse players, along with their parents and coaches, came to the June 12 school board meeting to show their support for making lacrosse an official school sport. Four current RBHS lacrosse players addressed the school board during the public

The administration surveyed RBHS students in May to gauge interest in lacrosse, and 168 students said that they would be interested if it became an official school sport. Mannon said if the school board makes lacrosse an official sport, the size of the boys and girls teams would probably be limited to 35 or 40 players each. Both boys and girls lacrosse are played in the spring in Illinois. Home games would probably not be played in the RBHS stadium, but rather at a local park. Brookfield to study bike lanes for Washington Ave. Project was recommended in the village’s Active Transportation Plan
By BOB UPHUES Editor
Brookfield could get its first dedicated bike lanes later this year after staff work out details of how and exactly where to stripe the pavement along Washington Avenue, between Golf Road and Kemman Avenue. The decision to move ahead with either bike lanes or markings for shared lanes on Washington Avenue came at a meeting of the intra-departmental Complete Streets Committee, which was formed in the wake of the village board adopting a “complete streets” policy in 2016. That policy was created to encourage active transportation, such as biking and walking, and formally mandated staff to take into account modes of transportation other than vehicles as it planned for the future. “The complete streets policy is a crucial first step toward smarter multi-modal transportation planning,” said Village Manager Keith Sbiral at the time the policy was adopted. In the wake of the complete streets policy, Brookfield in 2017 completed an Active Transportation Plan, funded through a county grant and led by the Active Transportation Alliance, which recommended a number of
initiatives to improve transportation in the village, including the creation of designated bike lanes, bike and pedestrian routes, improving sidewalks and intersections to make them safer, upgrading signage and more. The designation of a “bike boulevard” last year on Arden Avenue between Washington and Brookfield avenues was one of the first active transportation recommendations the village implemented. The Active Transportation Plan called out Washington Avenue as a candidate for designated bike lanes, given the street’s direct connection to two schools and the Eight Corners business district. “It’s an important safety step,” said Nicholas Greifer, the village of Brookfield’s director of community and economic development and a member of the Complete Streets Committee. “People use Washington Avenue all the time [as a bike route], so this is really providing an important asset that they don’t have currently.” The village board set aside funds for such a project within the Department of Public Works’ street maintenance budget, but Public Works Director Amy Wagner said the village may apply for a grant from the Active Transportation Alliance to
help fund the bike lane project. Waiting on grant funding could push the project later in the year. “We may have to hold off until fall to see if it’s eligible for [grant] funding the project,” Wagner said. Before anything gets greenlighted, officials will need to determine what’s feasible. Wagner said that the village’s engineer likely will have to look at street width and determine if the street can support designated bike lanes or shared lanes. The village may need to consult the Illinois Department of Transportation on rules. Once a study is complete, the findings would be taken to the village board for discussion. While the Active Transportation Plan also calls for reconfiguring traffic patterns at the Memorial Circle using pavement markings, the Washington Avenue bike lane initiative would not include those changes. How the traffic circle at Eight Corners will be integrated into the bike lane plan isn’t clear at this time. “That’s sort of the million-dollar question,” Greifer said. “It’ll require its own analysis. The Active Transportation Plan’s ideas for improving the circle go well beyond what we’re looking at here.”
Brookfield wins grant for 31st Street corridor study Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski (D-16th) announced on June 29 that the village of Brookfield had been awarded $85,000 in grant funding through the Invest in Cook program for transportation projects. The money has been earmarked for the 31st Street Corridor Impact Study, which would look at improving vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety along the busy thoroughfare, including the feasibility of a shared-use path along 31st Street east from Prairie Avenue to Golfview Avenue to directly connect with the Salt Creek Trail, bike lanes west of Prairie Avenue and a left-turn lane at Maple Avenue. However, the total cost of the impact study is projected to be $170,000, and Brookfield President Kit Ketchmark says the village doesn’t have, and shouldn’t have to shoulder, another $85,000 to get the study off the ground. “The bike trail is a regional project,” Ketchmark said. “We’re happy to be part of it, but if we’re being asked for half of the cost to see if it would even work, it’s not making sense on our part.” The 31st Street Corridor Impact Study doesn’t include actually implementing any aspects of the plan. The construction of a bike path connecting to the Salt Creek Trail is expected to cost about $750,000, said Ketchmark, an amount far beyond the capacity of Brookfield to fund. “It’s not a village of Brookfield project,” Ketchmark said. “Part of it is in Brookfield, but part is on county land. I don’t know that it’s fair for Brookfield to cover half the cost.” — Bob Uphues
District 103 gets cold shoulder from Lyons Village freezes school district out of July 4 parade, won’t share student info
By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Officials at the village of Lyons are apparently still sore about losing control of Lyons School District 103 Board of Education. The village is refusing to enter into a routine information-sharing agreement with District 103, allowing the village and school district to share information about students. The animosity apparently also extends to the Lyons Fourth of July parade. For the first time in decades, the school district’s Little Red Schoolhouse will not be part of the annual Independence Day celebration. Longtime board member Joanne Schaeffer, a resident of Lyons, was upset about the snub, saying that she has participated in the parade since 1979 and that her great granddaughter was looking forward to joining her in the parade this year. “That stinks,” Schaeffer said. “Shame on the village of Lyons just because they don’t
like a couple members of the board.” There is some confusion over whether or not the school district was officially invited to participate in the parade this year. The district received a general flyer about the parade, but was not provided an official entry form as it has in the past. “I’m not sure if the village did or did not send out official invites any longer, because we did get a flyer on it and we were told we’re on the list because we’re always in it, but we didn’t get any formal notifications,” Superintendent Carol Baker said. School board President Marge Hubacek says that she believes that if the village wanted the school district to participate in the parade, officials would have reached out in the way they had in the past. “Here’s my assumption, we didn’t get invited; they didn’t include us this year,” Hubacek said. Hubacek, a resident of Forest View, was not too concerned about the school district not being part of the parade, saying that she
had more important issues to worry about. “If they don’t want us in the parade they don’t want us in the parade, that’s it,” Hubacek said. In 2015, four candidates supported by Lyons Village President Christopher Getty were elected to take control of the school board. But in 2017, two Getty-backed incumbents were defeated, causing the villagebacked school board members to lose their majority. At the June 25 meeting of the District 103 school board, Baker said a village official told her administrative assistant that the village doesn’t want to enter into an agreement to share information with this school board. Hubacek, who was elected to the school board in 2017 and named board president, said she doesn’t understand why the village won’t enter into an information-sharing agreement with the school district as it has done for more than a decade. “This shouldn’t be a political issue,” Hu-
bacek said. “This is a kids’ issue.” The other communities that comprise District 103 -- Brookfield, Forest View, McCook, and Stickney – all have entered into reciprocal information-sharing agreements with the school district. School board member Shannon Johnson, who was also elected in 2017, recently went to a Lyons Village Board meeting to ask the village to enter into the agreement with the school district. Calls from the Landmark to the village of Lyons asking for comment about why the village was not entering into the agreement with the school district were not returned. Three of the district’s six schools are located in Lyons. The information-sharing agreements are typically routine and common across Illinois. They allow school districts to report suspected criminal acts by students to local police and allow local police departments to provide information and copies of police records to school officials.

District 103 hires new special ed director Veteran educator spent 15 years in northwest suburban district
By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
The new special education director for Lyons School District 103 impressed members of the interviewing committee as a sincere advocate for children. That’s one reason that on June 25 the school board voted 5 to 0 to hire Dr. Gregory Bublitz as the district’s new director of student services, replacing Janine Gruhn, who resigned this spring after two years at District 103. “I really liked him,” said Helen D’Ambrosio one of two parents on the interviewing committee. “He was very prochild.” D’Ambrosio has been a vocal critic of the district’s special education services at George Washington Middle School. The other parent on the interviewing committee, former school board member Deanna Viti-Huxhold, also liked Bublitz. “He was very precise when you asked him about kids,” Viti-Huxhold said. “He wanted to be hands-on. He was very student-oriented.” Bublitz, 48, is coming to District 103 after

In 2016, Bublitz received a doctorate in education from Loyola. Bublitz received a one-year contract and his salary will be $114,000.

While most of the houses bought by the county have already been demolished, the one at 3744 Stanley Ave. was left standing after it was deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Marcy Prchal, an architectural historian for the Public Service Archaeology and Architecture Program at the University of Illinois, conducted an architectural survey of the home last year on behalf of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. “The thing about that house is that it was so intact and such a representation of what [Riverside Lawn] was,” Prchal said in a phone interview. “It was locally significant.” That study concluded the PROVIDED home at 3744 Stanley Ave. was UP IN FLAMES: The house at 3744 Stanley Ave. in Rivereligible for the National Regisside Lawn was the oldest in the neighborhood, built by ter. Blaze is ‘suspicious’
A magical home in an idyllic neighborhood There was something different about the stone house with the turrets at 3744 Stanley Ave. in Riverside Lawn. As you walked on the path from the Swinging Bridge through the woods, the fairy-tale building just appeared out of nowhere. As crickets chirped and deer bounded into the trees, you were for a moment transported back more than a century to when Riverside Lawn was just being settled, a neighborhood literally in a forest. “It was a magical house. Sometimes I can’t believe I got to live there,” said Judy Koessel, who lived in the home for 17 years until selling it to the Cook County Land Bank as part of a buy-out program to reconvert Riverside Lawn into the barren flood plain it was meant to be. Koessel and her husband, Al, were the final owners of the home, which dated to the 1890s and was built by Alexander Watson, the man responsible for platting and developing Riverside Lawn after buying the land from Moses J. Wentworth in 1891. For the first decade they lived in the house, flooding wasn’t so bad, Judy Koessel said. It was a fact of life, but she and her husband worked out a system to pump out the basement and generally keep things livable. But from 2008 on, the floods intensified in their frequency and intensity. In the end, Koessel knew their days were numbered in the home. “I think what actually made our decision was the cost of the flood insurance,” said Koessel, and the prospect that one day insurance companies might simply stop offering it for a property so prone to flooding. But for almost two decades, the Koessels and their neighbors formed a tight community, bound not only by the trials of surviving floods but by the fact that Riverside Lawn was its own little kingdom. Riverside Lawn was never incorporated into any municipality and as a result, its property owners lived with a kind of freedom. flooding. The vandalism had also taken its toll. “The more I think about it, the better I feel,” Koessel said. “The house had to go down eventually. I knew they couldn’t seriously do anything to save it.” Rob Rose, executive director of the Cook County Land Bank, told the Landmark that his agency and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency agreed that moving the home to another location would be costprohibitive. However, no additional review of the home had taken place since last summer. Rose said
When the neighborhood threw a party, neighbors threw a party. Because there were few codes guiding what they could and couldn’t do, a common focal point at a big party was a bonfire. Koessel says she remembers one in particular where the night climaxed by six men throwing a piano into the bonfire. “The sound it made was absolutely hysterical,” Koessel said. At the last party, thrown late in the summer of 2016 after many residents had sold their homes, they made sure that former resident Bob Holdsworth and his band had songs about flooding on the set list. But the little, everyday things encountered while living in the home were what stood out to Koessel as magical. There were the initials of children of the second owner, Oscar Jenke, carved into a brick on the back porch. And there were Saturday mornings when Koessel looked outside to see strangers snapping portraits of themselves in front of the home. And the one day when Koessel was out front when a small boy and his mom stopped in front of the home. The child pointed at the house in wonder, saying, “That’s a castle.” One of the most vibrant, however was more private. In the morning, Judy and Al would sit at the dining room table having coffee. As sun shone through the beveled, leaded-glass windows, rainbows danced on the walls. “Do you know how good that makes you feel?” Koessel said. In the end, it was probably folly to build a neighborhood in a floodplain. And although a handful of families remain, it’s more of an outpost than a neighborhood now. But for Koessel, the good memories outweigh the bad. “Alexander Watson really did create an idyllic place, but it never got the respect it deserved,” she said. “But we always recognized it as a special, special place.” — Bob Uphues the Cook County Land Bank was awaiting for additional direction from the IHPA. “From our standpoint, we were waiting to see what else we needed to do to comply with [the IHPA’s] wishes,” Rose said, regarding direction on what, if anything, the county needed to salvage from the home as part of its review of the property. “We felt we were in queue.” Rose acknowledged that people had entered the home and vandalized it over time, but that his agency “tried to secure it as best we could to prevent folks from getting in the house.”

The Fourth and the future
P
articipating in the Fourth of July parades in Riverside and Brookfield, as the Landmark has done every year for the past 15 years, is a highlight. It’s a thrill to see familiar faces, and the not-so familiar, lining Longcommon Road in Riverside and Grand Boulevard in Brookfield, and to hear the good wishes (mainly) shouted in our direction. The Fourth is a celebration of community and national unity — an annual affirmation of the audacious declaration of what the nation stands for, and against. This year, the Fourth feels different. The nation’s institutions and principles are under attack by a president and an administration hell-bent on abandoning our closest allies and embracing international pariahs. In June, the president did his best to legitimize a murderous despot and shake the faith of our Pacific allies, Japan and South Korea, about our nation’s reliability in keeping the peace — a peace that is in our nation’s best interest. And in two weeks, that same president will go to Finland in order to kiss the ring of an autocrat who waged, and continues to wage, a coordinated campaign against free and fair elections in our country. The president of the United States is courting Russia and North Korea while waging trade wars against the nation’s friends and allies. He is destabilizing NATO, a military alliance created by the United States and its allies after World War II to counter Soviet aggression, by treating it as if it were an international protection racket. At home, there are members of the president’s cabinet who engage in brazen corruption, while an investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 campaign, which resulted in the president’s election, has produced a raft of indictments and guilty pleas — with more, no doubt, yet to come. Despite it all, a craven, spineless Congress abets every abuse, from the president’s fondness for rounding up asylum seekers and placing them in concentration camps, to the president’s embrace of white supremacy, to his continued attacks on foundational institutions of this nation — especially the free press. There is an election in November that is absolutely pivotal, the results of which can either begin the long march toward undoing the damage this administration has done to the fabric of the United States or aid in the nation’s slide toward autocracy. Yes, that’s a startling statement, but all of the evidence points toward it. The situation is dire. A year from now, we will all gather again to celebrate Independence Day. There will be parades and fireworks and picnics, just like any old year. The question is, what will be celebrating independence from?

Scholarship honors longtime Life cartoonist
I
t’s nice to be remembered, but how one is remembered is the thing. For the late Charley Krebs, being remembered comes in many forms. Krebs was a Riverside resident who passed away on Nov. 10, 2016 at the age of 59, but he had achieved much during those years, which were memorable. He probably was best known as an award-winning cartoonist for the Suburban Life newspaper chain. Krebs’ talent took hold when he was a student at Morton College, where he was part of the first graduating class at the new campus at Central Avenue and Pershing Road and served as editor of The Collegian, the school newspaper. After graduating from Morton College, he began an association with the Life newspapers for 39 years, pumping out five cartoons a week. There he met and befriended the Life’s managing editor, Bob Lifka. Lifka and another friend of Krebs’, Dan Fridanze, have created a scholarship in Krebs’ memory to a Morton College student planning to study journalism. The scholarship is funded through donations to the Charley Krebs Memorial Scholarship through the Morton College Foundation. Organizers of the Riverside Farmers Market rec-
ognized Krebs’ contributions by collecting donations to be given to the fund. He provided print ads for the farmers market on a regular basis, the most recognizable of which is his version of the classic Grant Wood “American Gothic” couple. It was Bob Lifka and Jackie Krebs, Charley’s sister, who announced the recipient of the first Charley Krebs Scholarship at a convocation in May at the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center at Morton College. The recipient was Irisneida Rodriguez, who has been the editor-in-chief the Morton College Collegian, with a high recommendation from the faculty advisors. Lifka, a Brookfield resident, has a strong journalism background and in education, working as a substitute teacher locally. He is also remembered as being the former director of the North Riverside Library. He stated that he hopes people will continue remembering Krebs by helping to support the scholarship fund to help others follow the late cartoonist’s path and nurture a strong interest in journalism. More information on donating or learning more about the Charley Krebs Memorial Scholarship can go to the website at www.mortoncollegefoundation. org/donations-giving.

Would you mind trimming the urban forest? Don’t forget our pedestrians. Sun and rain has blessed our urban forest with new growth. Please be considerate and remember to trim the branches jutting out across the sidewalks. Walking is more difficult when you have to duck low-hanging branches. After a rainfall, the rain-soaked leaves provide a second unanticipated shower if you don’t clear the branches. Distracted walkers get a surprise face slap if you are not looking ahead. The alternative is walking across the lawn. It’s easy to forget about that tree in the parkway or the bush at the edge of the sidewalk. A little time spent trimming will result in grateful pedestrians.

PHILLIPS from page 1 “At that time, all the Bohemians lived in Berwyn,” she said. Her parents spoke only Czech at home, she said, and never learned to speak English. While her mom became an American citizen, her dad never did. Mary’s older brother, Tony Sedivy, was born in 1921 and her younger brother, Jim, in 1936. All of the kids went to S.E. Gross School and then to Riverside-Brookfield High School. Tony was excited to learn when he went to school in Brookfield, that the other kids in class spoke a foreign language — English. Mary says she doesn’t recall having a difficult time learning English even though only Czech was spoken at home. “I learned it because [my brother and everyone else in town] did, I guess,” Phillips said. “I don’t have any trouble.” The year 1943 was a big one for Mary. She was 17 years old at the time, and during those 12 months she graduated from high school, got married and had her first child, Donald, who is Nicole’s dad. Mary ended up going steady with her future husband, Maurice Phillips, “because my girlfriend’s sister didn’t like him.” The two married before Maurice shipped off to the Pacific with the U.S. Army. Mary’s brother, Tony, also served in the Army in Europe. For many years, Tony Sedivy was the owner of a popular restaurant at the northwest corner
of Maple and Ogden avenues, The Blue Bonnet, which served Bohemian fare cooked up by his mom. Mary worked as a waitress and helped with the catering business. But Mary’s future work life lay elsewhere in Brookfield. At the urging of Maurice, who didn’t like Mary working every Sunday in the restaurant, she ended up taking a job in a dry cleaning business on 47th Street — Swan Cleaners. The business was owned by Maurice’s aunt and uncle. Mary Phillips would end up working at Swan Cleaners full-time until she was 89. She’d still be working if she could get there. “I would if I could, but I can’t drive anymore,” Phillips said. “They took my driver’s license away.” She still visits the shop regularly, though her relatives sold the business long ago to another former employee whose children continue to run the business. Tony Sedivy was active in the American Legion, Phillips said, and was instrumental in helping bring a replica of the Liberty Bell to Kiwanis Park in 1976. Her younger brother, Jim Sedivy, was married many years to Sharon Sedivy, who retired in 2017 after working the switchboard and in the nurse’s office at Riverside-Brookfield High School for 30 years. Sharon Sedivy’s son, Michael, is a village trustee in neighboring Riverside. As for how the view has changed from the front steps of her Henrietta Avenue home, Phillips hasn’t given it much consideration. She’s been kind of busy since 1943. “To me it seems the same,” she said. “You kind of grow with the territory.”

RBHS girls hoops win summer league Along with success, Bulldogs focused on developing chemistry and fitness By MILES POWERS-HUANG Contributing Reporter
Brenna Loftus
O
n the heels of a 21-7 season (9-2 Metro Suburban), the Riverside-Brookfield High School girls basketball team will look to build off of that tha success, as many players from last year’s inexperienced team return for another campaign. Head coach Dallas Till is hoping to H create winning habits during the sumcre mer, as he gets a first look at younger me players trying to prove themselves, as pl well as upperclassmen who haven’t w played together since the end of last pl season. se At in the summer,, Till’s A this point p main ma ain concern is his team’s fitness, which whiich he hopes a more consistent summer schedule will help develop. “Our conditioning isn’t where it needs to be, because we aren’t practicing on a regular basis,” Till said. “The first couple weeks of summer league are pretty rough because some kids haven’t been playing a s much and don’t have their basketball legs.” Althoug h Although conditioning is not yet at the level Till wants to see, his team won first place in their summer league, as RBHS took all three playoff games including a semifinal victory over
Maddie Mehan
“It’s about understanding that no one is bigger than the team.” DALLAS TILL Coach
Aurora Central Catholic, and a championship win against Aurora Christian. While winning games is a nice bonus, the most important aspect of the summer is building his team’s chemistry while trying to plug new players into positions where they can be successful. “I want to see developing cohesiveness among the group, (and) take a look at some a of o the newcomers from the sophomore team (and) if their game will acclimate to te the th varsity level,” Till said. When it comes to specific players, the Bulldogs return standout players Maddie B Meehan and Brenna Loftus. Till emphaM sized Loftus’ ability to get to the basket, s draw fouls, and shoot. Till hopes she can d continue to develop, after having success c both last season and in the summer. b The only concern Till has for Meehan is her health, as she is nursing what he described as a “pretty serious leg injury.” d Assuming she can return in time for the A regular season, Till will be counting on r her h to not only score in the post, but also to make her teammates better with her passm ing in ability, shooting ability (to stretch the floor), and her leadership. fl Till also stressed the value of returning starters Sara JnoBaptiste, a shooter, and st Mary Maloney, a floor general. With MaloM ney n specifically, Till feels he has a player whose speed and playmaking will be cruw cial c towards the Bulldogs’ success. “Mary really came on in the middle of
last year,” Till said. “Due to some injuries, her playing time increased, and she really ran with that. Her scoring and her perimeter jump shot have really improved over the past couple seasons. She’s almost faster with the basketball than she is without.” As for the new players trying to make their mark on the team, Till has a clear idea for the type of player he is looking for. “Primarily, they need to be coachable, they need to be team-centered, and willing to buy in to what we’re doing,” Till said. “It’s about understanding that no one is bigger than the team.” Translating success from season to season is one of the toughest challenges in sports, but Till is hopeful that because so many of the players on last year’s team were underclassmen, this team will already have a clear idea of what players’ roles are. Till also believes that because RBHS won many close games last year, the team will be more confident heading into this coming season. “Last year we didn’t really know what to expect. We had a lot of newcomers from the lower levels, and we were pleasantly surprised with how their games transcended to the varsity level. We’re hoping we can build off of that success,” Till said. “These kids learned how to win tight games last year and we feel that will help us this upcoming season.”
