The 2019 farmers market season has kicked off and will operate weekly in both Riverside and Brookfield into the fall. The Riverside Farmers Market kicks off its 10th year on June 5 and will run every Wednesday from 2:30 to 7 p.m. through Oct. 9 in Centennial Park at Longcommon Road and Forest Avenue. Visit new vendors as well as longtime favorites. The market features fruits and vegetables, smoothies, breads, cookies and scones, eggs, meat, fish, honey, hot entrees, vegan and gluten-free treats, a knife sharpener, live music and more.

Bulldogs ousted by Marist in 4A playoffs Despite tough ending, RBHS won 27 games, regional title By MARTY FARMER

uring the regular season and majority of its run in the IHSA Class 4A state playoffs, the Riverside-Brookfield High School softball team won games primarily via its prolific offense. The Bulldogs scored double-digit runs in 14 games (highlighted by 20 runs in a game on four occasions) during the regular season and outscored its first three opponents in the postseason by a combined score of 33-5. However, the Bulldogs offense stalled against Marist in a riveting sectional final. Generally regarded as the best team in Illinois and among the top 10 teams nationally, the RedHawks escaped with a 1-0 victory in eight innings over RBHS at Lewis University on May 31. While both teams created some traffic on the bases, neither could score as the RedHawks’ Angela Zedak and Bulldogs’ Nadia Ranieri (16-3, 2.43 ERA) engaged in a pitching duel. Marist finally eked out the victory between the sectional’s top two seeds when sophomore shortstop Easton Lotus hit an RBI single with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. “Even after a tough loss, I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” said Kailyn Ngo, a four-year varsity starter for RBHS. “To lose by one run in the eighth against a team that usually blows other teams out, that says a lot about us. I seriously couldn’t ask for a better last season as an RB softball player.” The combination of Zedak, Lotus and Lexi Voss, proved too much to overcome for RBHS. The Northwesternbound Zedak threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. Lotus and Voss, who have committed to Louisville and Michigan, respectively, contributed defensive gems. The RedHawks (35-2) have 11 players committed to Division I college softball teams. “Zedak is one of the best pitchers in the state,” RBHS coach Doug Schutz said. “She has good velocity on her fastball and good movement on her drop ball and curve. We got a few hits off her and had runners on base in all but two innings, but we just couldn’t produce any runs. Easton Lotus made some outstanding

To their credit, the Bulldogs matched Marist for essentially the entire game with pitching and difference-making defense. “Nadia pitched out of three or four jams,” Schultz said. “We also played the best defense as a team I’ve seen, including an awesome double play up the middle.” In the Marist Sectional semifinals, RBHS defeated Shepard 10-4. Trailing 1-0 early, the Bulldogs responded with 10 unanswered runs. Standout catcher Emily Noel capped off the scoring spree with a three-run homer that traveled an estimated 250 feet. “Emily hit a bomb. That was one of the hardest hit balls I’ve ever seen,” Schultz said. “I think we were a little nervous the first couple of innings. Nadia calmed down in the pitcher’s circle and once we found our groove on offense,

we were fine.” The Bulldogs had one of the best seasons in program history. RBHS finished with a 27-5 record, earned second in the Metro Suburban Conference and won a regional championship. RBHS also notched notable wins over Oak Park and River Forest, St. Francis, Lyons Township and swept York in a doubleheader. “It was the best year I’ve had, but not just record-wise,” Schultz said. “The girls were truly amazing. It sounds cliché, but the group worked so hard and always wanted to improve. They weren’t satisfied with being good; they wanted to be great.” In addition to success on the field, the coaches and players genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. “We are all so close,” junior Abby Favela said. “We had so many great memories this season. The team brunches we had before playoff games are some of my favorites. It felt like more than a softball team, it felt like a family.” Although the RBHS loses Ngo, Lynch, Lauren Lambros and two other seniors to graduation, the bulk of the lineup returns next spring. Led by Noel (.431 batting average, 12 HR, 50 RBIs), Ranieri (.516, .613 on-base percentage) and Isabella Garcia (.353, 6 HR, 29 RBIs), nine contributing players return next spring as the Bulldogs figure to contend again in conference and the postseason.

LTHS soccer nets fourth in state Lions won 18 games, conference & postseason titles By MARTY FARMER Sports Editor

The Lyons Township High School girls soccer team got the rematch it wanted against Naperville North in the Class 3A state semifinals. Unfortunately, the Huskies completed a season sweep of the Lions en route to winning the state championship, 2-1 over Barrington in the final. Naperville North, which defeated LTHS at the Naperville Invite during the regular season, edged the Lions again 2-1 on penalty kicks in the state semifinals at North Central College on Friday, May 31 “Naperville North beat us at their tournament, but we felt like it was a match we could have won,” LTHS coach Bill Lanspeary said. “We looked forward to the rematch in the state semifinals. It was a hard-fought game. In overtime, neither team wanted to take too many chances. Their goalkeeper made some nice saves and they won 4-2 on penalty kicks.” The Lions scored first when Olivia Wirtz found the back of the net off an assist from Ava Dallavo in the 39th minute. Naperville North tied the score at 1-1 when Hannah Martin scored an unassisted goal late in the second half. “Our back line did a great job of limiting their opportunities,” Lanspeary said. “In the second half, Naperville North came out and put some pressure on us. They scored on kind of a weird play. There was a scrum around the top of the box, the ball squirted out, and one of their players got a shot off against our goalkeeper who was coming out.” In their final game of the season, the Lions lost to New Trier 2-0 in the third-place game on Saturday, June 1. “It can be mentally tough playing in the third-place game,” Lanspeary said. “It’s a tough one because our kids had prom on Thursday and then a physically and emotionally draining game against Naperville North Friday. But we looked at it like it’s this group’s last game together so they should go out, have fun and give it their best shot.” Although LTHS lost its last two games, the team had an excellent season. The Lions finished 18-4, highlighted by a 6-0 record in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division, and won regional and sectional championships. The Lions also notched impressive postseason wins against Andrew (2-1 in overtime in the Reavis Supersectional), and Whitney Young (2-1 in the Glenbard East Sectional final). “This was a very special group,” Lanspeary said. “At the start of each season, we talk about camaraderie and staying together as a team. The girls really bought into the concept of a true team effort in order to get where we want to go. They supported each other throughout the season.” All-state senior midfielder Eileen Murphy, an Illinois commit, led the Lions with a team-high 22 goals to go with two assists. Davallo (8 goals, 8 assists) and Georgia Dougherty (6 goals, 3 assists) also played major roles on offense. Defensively, seniors Bri Stirrat, Linnea Nelson-Sandall and sophomore Lily Mattern provided a strong wall in front of goalkeepers Sophie Grabis and Cara Perez. Senior midfielder Meara Hilling played well alongside Murphy. “Bri and Lily did an awesome job all season. Our backline was really tough so they deserve a lot of credit,” Lanspeary said. “Eileen [Murphy] gets a ton of praise de-

servedly so, but Meara is a heckuva player, too, and a great kid. “We are going to miss our entire group of seniors,” Lanspeary added. “Whether they started or came in off the bench, they all played a big part in our success as a team.” Despite the loss of Murphy, Hilling, Stirrat, Perez, Nelson-Sandall and Grace Truax to graduation, a solid group of varsity players return next spring. Reinforcements are on the way as well, courtesy of strong sophomore and junior varsity squads. “I think you’re always a little leery when you lose seniors,” Lanspeary said. “You think about who is going to step up and fill their roles, but we have three sophomores and eight juniors who have been through this now. Hopefully, they can lead us back next season. We’re lucky because we always have kids who are good soccer players coming into the program.”
