RBHS eyes ‘academy’ for struggling new freshmen Team of faculty to provide intensive instruction early By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
The art gallery is called The Compassion Factory, named after the small, local Methodist congregation Compassion
Next year, freshmen at Riverside-Brookfield High School who are starting high school behind in reading will be grouped together in a structured program designed to give them intensive instruction and support in an attempt to help them meet college- and career-ready benchmarks by the time they graduate. Last month, District 208 Board of Education Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Kylie Lindquist presented the outlines of what school officials are calling the College and Career Readiness Academy. “Reading is the main [subject] that will drive students into the academy,” Lindquist told the school board. “We can really put a program around these students as we support their needs.” Students in the academy will take a structured program taught by a group of teachers who will have a common planning period that will allow them to review student progress and talk about

Vote delayed on church use at art gallery Planning commission wants legal opinion on limits
By BOB UPHUES Editor
The Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission has put off a vote on grant-
ing a special use permit that would allow church services inside an Eight Corners art gallery, to see if there’s any way to legally limit the church use once it’s granted.

Triton buys former driving range for $3.6M Trustees say the land could be used for new facilities, expanded programs
By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter
A former golf practice range in Melrose Park is now part of Triton College’s campus after the college’s Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to purchase the land in November for $3.6 million. Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to authorize the purchase by issuing a five-year debt certificate through BMO Harris Bank. The interest rate for the debt certificate will be no higher than 2.4 percent. The 8.3-acre property — located at 1701 S. 5th Ave., just west of Costco, east of Gottlieb Hospital and immediately south of Triton’s east side campus — was formerly Golfland Arcade, a practice driving range that closed in 1996. According to documents from the Nov. 2 meeting, college officials believe that the property “is suitable for opportunities such as a new education building to house college programs, expansion of the horticulture department’s academic activities or uses for other programs and facilities.” The property was listed on LoopNet for
$7 million, but according to county land records, the property was purchased for $3.3 million in 2006 by River Park Development LLC, based in Harwood Heights. Albert Bruno is listed as the manager of that company. Records show that Bruno took out a $5.2 million mortgage on the property at the time of the purchase. Attempts to contact Bruno were unsuccessful. In the last several years, Triton has undergone a series of new construction and capital improvement projects as part of a $53 million Campus Renewal Project, including a major renovation of its health and sciences facility in 2015. The renewal project also included the $14 million renovation of its east athletic complex, completed in 2016, and improvements to its student center and child development center, among many others. So far, it isn’t known whether or not the purchase of Golfland is part of that renewal project. Attempts to contact Triton officials before press time were unsuccessful. Triton College serves Riverside, North Riverside as well as the Riverside and Proviso township portions of Brookfield.
PROVIDED
GROWING: Triton College’s Board of Trustees has purchased an 8.3-acre former golf driving range just south of its River Grove campus to expand its footprint. It’s unclear at this time how the new property will be developed to further the community college’s mission.

District 103 buying interactive boards for some classes Pilot program could be rolled out beginning next year to entire district By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Lyons-Brookfield Elementary School District 103 plans to spend about $200,000 over the next three and a half years to outfit all its classrooms with interactive projectors that can turn a wall or a white board into an interactive board. At its Dec. 18 meeting, the District 103 Board of Education voted 5 to 0 to authorize spending $18,000 this spring to purchase nine Epson projectors and the associated software for a pilot program of the system. Nine classrooms will be selected to pilot the Epson BrightLink 685 WI Base System. Many of the projectors now in use in District 103 classrooms are malfunctioning and replacement parts cannot be purchased, because the manufacturer no longer makes the product, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Darek Naglak told the school board. If the reviews from the pilot use of the Epson BrightLink system are positive, the district will spend about $60,000 over each of the next three years to purchase the system for each classroom in the district. This spring the teachers piloting the system will be observed by Naglak and principals. The teachers involved in the pilot program will also provide written feedback about the system. If the board goes ahead after the pilot, grades one, four, and seven will get the projectors and software in the 2018-19 school year. In the 2019-20 grades two, five, and eight will get the system, and in the 2020-21 grades three and six, along with kindergarten classrooms, will be outfitted with the system. “Yes it’s an investment, but it’s going back to the kids,” said school board President Marge Hubacek before the vote. Naglak was enthusiastic about the technology and the possibilities in his presentation to the school board. The system is in use in Westchester School District 92½. Naglak and Edison School Principal Jan Bernard observed the system being used in Westchester and came away very impressed. “We’re expecting kids to interact with the technology,” Bernard said.

TECH PURCHASE: District 103 is piloting the purchase of interactive boards that allow teachers and students to work directly on a projected color display. If successfully implemented, the boards will rolled out to all classrooms over the next three years. The devices can project on to a screen or bare wall and students can touch the display, like a touch screen, to write or erase words and numbers, draw figures or move elements. Each projector and the associated software costs about $2,000, which Naglak said is about half the price of a Smartboard. Naglak said all math and language arts classes offer interactive learning activities that can benefit from the interactive boards. The Epson system puts out an interactive display that features high color contrast and brightness and has dual pen-based interactivity that allows up to two users to write on any wall or existing whiteboard.
Assistant principal at Lincoln? In other District 103 news, the school board is considering whether to hire an assistant principal at Lincoln School next year. Lincoln School, which is in Brookfield, is the largest elementary school in the district with an enrollment of about 460 students. Counting pre-school enrollment, about 560
kids attend Lincoln School. “That’s an awful lot of students for one person,” said District 103 Superintendent Carol Baker, who brought the idea of creating an assistant principal position at Lincoln to the school board. When former Lincoln School Principal Katie Schumann was first hired by District 103 12 years ago, she served as an assistant principal at both Lincoln and George Washington Middle School. When Schumann became the principal at Lincoln nine years ago, the half-time assistant principal position at Lincoln School was cut. Schumann resigned as principal at Lincoln School last year; Theresa Silva was hired to replace her. Hubacek said that she wants more information, including how many teachers the district’s preschool director, Chris Newell, evaluates before deciding whether to create a new position. Newell is based at Lincoln School. “I think it could happen, but we still have to get, for me, a lot more information before we add another administrator on,” Hubacek said. “But I think it’s doable.”

A 21-year-old Riverside man on parole for a 2013 armed robbery is back in custody and charged with the attempted armed robbery of a 24-year-old North Riverside man on Dec. 21. The victim was walking home from work about 11 p.m. and was at the intersection of 23rd Street and Northgate Avenue when he was confronted by two men wearing dark clothing and black hooded sweatshirts. One of the offenders asked for his wallet while the other, identified as Aireon D. Luster, allegedly pointed a gun to the victim’s head. When the victim refused to turn over his wallet, the first offender reportedly asked Luster for the gun and then struck the victim in the face with the gun. Luster also reportedly beat the victim as well. The victim was able to grab hold of the gun and the magazine fell out of it. The victim picked up the magazine and attempted to strike one of his attackers with it when a witness screamed, “What’s going on out there?” The two offenders ran off and the victim called police. Paramedics treated the victim for cuts to his face, and police located a vehicle without license plates driving in the 2200 block of Northgate Avenue. Officers chased the vehicle, which crashed at Roosevelt Road and Harvey Avenue in Oak Park. Luster was taken into custody in the 1100 block of Lombard Avenue. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Luster with attempted armed robbery. His alleged accomplice is still at large, and the investigation continues. At the time of his arrest, Luster was on parole after serving a portion of a 10-year sentence he received for a prior armed robbery. In custody since 2013, Luster was convicted in 2016 and sent to Jacksonville Correctional Center. He was paroled on June 21, 2017. He reportedly lived in the 200 block of East Burlington Street in Riverside, according to the police report.
Internet fraud A 46-year-old Brookfield man went to police on Dec. 25 to report that he’d been scammed out of $700 by someone who had listed an iPhone for sale on Facebook’s “Marketplace” section. The victim told police he negotiated the sale of the phone via Facebook Messenger and wired the money through Walmart, saying he’d release the funds after receiving the phone. However, the victim later learned that the “seller” of the phone had retrieved the money at a Walmart in Three Oaks, Michigan, telling an employee he was the victim and claiming to have lost the receipt.
Vehicle break-ins
A 43-year-old Westchester man contacted North Riverside police to report that his 2014 Chrysler had been burglarized while parked in the north lot at Kohl’s, 2200 Harlem Ave. on Dec. 21 between 3:30 and 4 p.m. According to the police report, the victim likely left the vehicle unlocked. Taken from the car was a computer case containing a Macbook Pro computer and a bag containing a ring. The total value of the loss was estimated at roughly $1,330.
OD victim revived A Brookfield police officer was able to reverse the effects of a potentially deadly heroin overdose by administering a dose of the opioid antidote Naloxone to the 26-year-old victim on Dec. 23 about 6 p.m. Brookfield police and paramedics were dispatched to a residence in the 3700 block of Raymond Avenue after the victim was found lying unconscious in the bathroom with a needle in his arm. A police officer, who was the first to arrive at the scene, administered the nosespray antidote, which somewhat roused the victim, who was taken to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment.
DUI suspect hospitalized Riverside paramedics transported a man charged with driving under the influence of alcohol to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn on the night of Dec. 24 after police reported he was so drunk that he “literally could not function.” About 10:45 p.m., North Riverside police broadcast a bulletin after another motorist called to report a vehicle weaving all over the road near 26th Street and Desplaines Avenue. A Riverside officer located the car at 31st Street and pulled it over next to Brookfield Zoo. The driver was extremely drunk, police said, and there were open cans of beer and an open bottle of vodka inside the vehicle. According to police, the man’s blood-alcohol content was .358, which is more than four times the legal limit of .08. It was the single highest blood-alcohol content recorded in 2017 in Riverside, according to police. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Dec. 2128, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riverside chief slams county courts’ bail policy But chief judge defends order keeping non-violent offenders out of jail
By BOB UPHUES Editor
In December, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel put on some civilian clothes and drove over to the Maybrook courthouse to observe bond court. Earlier in the year, Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Tim Evans had ordered county judges to assess the risk of a defendant posing a public safety threat and/or the defendant’s likelihood of skipping bail. Once that assessment was made, judges were instructed to set bonds at an amount that would ensure the defendant continued to appear in court while at the same time keeping people out of jail for extended periods of time just because they couldn’t afford to post bail. Weitzel in a recent statement called the new policy “laughable.” But a spokesman for Judge Evans defended the policy, providing figures that indicate about 90 percent of those released on bail or electronic monitoring show up for their future hearing dates and that more than 93 percent have not been re-arrested. On the day he went to observe bond court

But Pat Milhizer, communications director for Chief Judge Tim Evans, rebutted Weitzel’s claims that those released on electronic monitoring are committing crimes while awaiting trial. According to Milhizer, of the 258 people charged with felonies and released on bond between the day the order was implemented, Sept. 18, 2017, and Nov. 30, a total of 240 – 93 percent -- were not re-arrested. Of the 18 who were re-arrested, nine were charged with violating the terms of their electronic monitoring. Only one of those offenders was charged with a crime against another person, battery. Further, Milhizer said, no felony defendants released on electronic monitoring since Sept. 18 in the Fourth District of Cook County Circuit Court, which includes Riverside, have been charged with new crimes. “Overall, of the 2,027 felony defendants who secured pretrial release from custody from September 18, 2017 through November 15, 2017, 89.8 percent appeared for all their scheduled court dates, and 93.5 percent were not re-arrested by November 30, 2017,” Milhizer said.

47th Street building a former hit factory Remembering Larry Sturm and Tanglewood Recording Studio
By JEFFERY C. JOHNSON Contributing Reporter
A
little over two years ago a group of well-dressed people gathered together to celebrate the life of a beloved man that was family, friend, co-worker and acquaintance. The gathering, in a soaring brick church on a mild winter day at 47th Street and Brainard in LaGrange, was similar to countless memorials at that exact time around the world but, of course, it was different too. While some lives are destined to touch many and many lives are destined to touch some. Those that gathered to celebrate Larry Sturm had been touched by a man that had spent his life touching (and moving) the rest of the world through his talent for music and an amazing 30-year career. A couple of miles east on 47th Street from that LaGrange church -at 9520 47th St. in Brookfield -- there sits an unassuming building housing a firm that makes draperies for commercial buildings and homes. Yet, on late nights, as you sit at the intersection waiting on a lethargic Indiana Harbor Belt freight train, you might hear faint pulsing beats. And, if you steal a quick, sideways glance at the dark building that sells drapes during the day, you might catch a glimpse of figures gathering, collaborating, and laughing in the parking lot. And, in that millisecond, as the
beats get stronger, you might fall back 25 years and see the buzzing hive that was Tanglewood Recording Studio. If you spent any time near a dance floor in the 1990s, there is a good chance that you were moving to music that was created at Tanglewood Recording Studio in Brookfield. It was a small, plain building with beats in its blood, where dance hits were created, where a reputation was forged and, for a few years, the sound of the time was shaped. On a quiet night in 1991, Sturm and a man called “Silk” were sitting at the console at Tanglewood Studio choosing bits of Prince’s song “Gett Off ” to chop, slice, sauté and ultimately mix in to a new serving. Prince had sent the song from Audubon Road and McGlynn Drive in Minneapolis to 47th and Blanchan in Brookfield, to be remixed by house music legend Steve “Silk” Hurley. At Hurley’s side was his engineer of choice, Sturm. While Hurley had ideas about how to expertly pare the ingredients of the music, he knew that Larry was an expert chef. “Gett Off ” (the Hurley Mix) went to number one on the dance charts that year. Throughout his career, Sturm was awarded more than 30 gold and platinum records for his work as an engineer, remixer and producer. He created music with such diverse talents as Naked Raygun, Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Hudson, Twista, Ministry and Cathy Richardson to

IT’S A HIT: Larry Sturm (above) was awarded more than 30 gold and platinum records for his work as an engineer, producer and remixer for hit dance records such as “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child. Much of that work was done on 47th Street at Tanglewood Studio in Brookfield (below, left). his last work with gospel star Hezekiah Walker and many, many others. Consult your nearest liner notes. Sturm’s work at Tanglewood Studio, inside those four sound-proofed, drapery-less walls, is some of his most exciting -- remixing Prince, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul and others, while working with an unrivaled team of artists from the Chicago dance scene, including producers Steve Hurley, Maurice Joshua and E Smoove and singers Ce Ce Peniston, M Doc, Jaime Principle, Chantay Savage and Kym Sims. On an ordinary day in 1994, producers Charlie Babie and Manny Mohr sat with Sturm at the Tanglewood recording console cooking up another hit. Babie and Mohr had started a collaboration called 20 Fingers and, with the vocal talents of a Chicagoarea singer named Gillette, they all created the popular song “Short Di** Man.” “Short Di** Man” (aka “Short Short Man”) by 20 Fingers and Gillette reached the Top 10 in 10 different countries, No. 14 on the Billboard 100, and hit No. 1 in France and Italy. While the subsequent work by 20
Fingers did well, it failed to reach the top of the charts. However, it was just another in a long list of hits that the talents at Tanglewood created. A common thread throughout much of the success at the studio was Sturm, who, with a steady hand and a keen ear, found ways to guide the music out to the tops of charts, and corners of dance floors, all over the world. A few years later and Tanglewood Studios would come undone.
Many of the producers and performers went on to further their careers, some winning awards, some expanding their interests, and others moving in to new areas. For Sturm, his career continued to grow and expand until that one day, a couple of years ago, when his musical life came to an unexpected “rest” in the composition. Yet, the work that he and the many others produced at Tanglewood Studio will live on for years. Recently, while driving along 47th Street on a drizzling night, the song “We Got a Love Thang” came on the radio. Thoughts instantly drifted to Tanglewood Studio and how that song seemed to best sum up what the studio was all about at that time. Ce Ce Peniston’s song utilizes every one of the talented people that were there and together they created a worldwide hit that continues, 25 years later, to move people. “I take pride in making great records,” Sturm wrote on his LinkedIn page, which is still up. “Every song has a soul and needs to be brought to life so everyone can enjoy it.”

Brookfield trustees to review ambitious comp plan Includes design manual for new infill development
By BOB UPHUES Editor
Brookfield’s board of trustees will take a last look at the village’s new comprehensive plan, now in its final draft form (www.ratiodesign.com/Brookfieldcp), during its next committee of the whole meeting on Monday, Jan. 8, with an expectation of adopting the document later this month. After more than a year of work by a team of consultants, a select steering committee and input from residents and other key stakeholders, the final document is easily the most detailed strategic planning document ever produced by the village. In addition, it is the village’s most ambitious planning document and includes recommendations that could have a profound effect on future development in Brookfield. While it’s difficult to encapsulate all of the detailed recommendations in the comprehensive plan, there are some broad themes that are evident, particularly with respect to density and scale. Village officials also clearly would like to be able to more tightly steer development by encouraging incentives for developments that meet specific design standards outlines in a separate but crucial document that’s part of the final document – a 79-page Sub-Area Design Manual intended to give developers “a better understanding of the village’s expectations for creating a vibrant community.” While the design manual doesn’t require developers to follow the guidelines, and doesn’t affect single-family residential zoning districts, it’s meant as a supplement, spreading the principles enshrined in the Station Area Zoning Code, adopted by the village board a year ago for commercial and residential areas along the BNSF train line. “We definitely would love to see design standards [from the Station Area Code] replicated in other areas of the village,” said Emily Egan, Brookfield’s village planner. The design manual also recommends the creation of a separate Design Review Commission as a subcommittee of the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission. The design review panel, it is suggested, would include two architects, a landscape architect, a person with historic preservation and design experience, a downtown build-
setbacks, building materials, façade design and drive-thrus. It also recommends how and where parking and bicycle facilities should be incorporated into plans, gives recommendations for signage, streetscape elements, landscaping, sustainable design, lighting and planning with public safety in mind. “We hope that any developer, before they come to the village, would review [the design manual] and sense that that’s where we want to go,” Egan said. Apart from the design manual, the separate 200-plus page comprehensive plan document includes many other recommendations. The following is a roundup of some of the more notable recommendations in the comprehensive plan’s implementation matrix. ■ Create a “Back to Brookfield” incentive program to attract Lyons Township and RiversideBrookfield high school graduates with college degrees in STEM fields to return to live in Brookfield. ■ Encourage aging-in-place/ multigenerational family living by allowing in-law apartments in homes and accessory structures like garages, but prohibiting those units from being rented. ■ Encourage redevelopment COURTESY OF WWW.RATIODESIGN.COM/BROOKFIELDCP of obsolete industrial buildings and introduce live-work and loft units. MAKEOVER: Rev. Karl Sokol has transformed a former dry cleaning business at 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield into The Compassion Factory, which he wants to operate six days a week as an art gallery/studio and one day a week as a worship space for his small Methodist congregation.
GALLERY Special use from page 1 United Methodist Church, which purchased the former dry cleaning business at 9210 Broadway Ave. in 2016. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Karl Sokol, has spent the last year rehabbing the storefront to house a for-profit art gallery/studio and has hired a full-time executive director to run it. The gallery will host an opening reception for its inaugural exhibition on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. An art gallery is a use that’s permitted by right in the commercial zoning district that includes 9210 Broadway Ave. However, religious assembly requires a special use permit in all of Brookfield’s zoning districts. Sokol is the son of longtime Brookfield businesswoman and former village trustee Linda Sokol Francis, who has been buying property in the Eight Corners district over the past several years, believing the introduction of a new church and businesses supporting the church’s mission would revitalize the area. “Our primary mission as a church is to provide something beautiful and necessary for ourselves, for Brookfield and the world,” Rev. Sokol told commissioners at a public hearing on the special use permit on Dec. 28. Sokol said the Eight Corners area has been underutilized for many years and that the church could have the biggest impact in the district by rehabbing the former dry cleaning business “and make something useful and commercial out of it.” He said that the art gallery/studio would operate six days a week, but asked the village to allow the church to use the space an hour a week for services. Sokol says he envisions Eight Corners as an “arts district,” though the village has never expressed such a plan. In 2010, the village board denied Linda Sokol Francis’ bid to obtain a special use permit to construct a church/community center on a
large parcel of land she had purchased in the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard. She subsequently conveyed a large portion of that land to the United Methodist Church. Commissioners voted 4 to 3 on Dec. 28 to delay a decision on the special use permit for religious assembly inside The Compassion Factory until its next meeting on Jan. 25. However, a majority appeared to be leaning against granting the special use permit just prior to that decision. “I am a bit concerned about the growth of that use, and at some point 20, 30 years down the road it could become predominantly a religious use when the art gallery fades,” said Commissioner Patrick Benjamin, who was joined in voting against delaying the special use decision by Chairman Charles Grund and Commissioner Todd Svoboda. Commissioners Jennifer Hendricks, Karen Miller, Chris Straka and Mark Weber voted to continue the matter in order to get a legal opinion on limiting the use of the property for religious assembly, though both Miller and Weber appeared to be leaning against granting the special use permit. Miller pointed to the Brookfield 2020 Master Plan and a nearly complete new comprehensive plan as well as the creation of a tax increment financing district that envisions future development of a pedestrian-oriented commercial/higher-density residential district as reasons for being wary of introducing a religious use. “The vision for the Eight Corners sub-area is to encourage commercial uses,” Miller said. “The art gallery is not in question here, but this secondary religious assembly use is not appropriate for this site.” Commissioners also expressed concern that granting a special use permit for religious assembly at The Compassion Factory would set a precedent that might be hard to refuse elsewhere in the Eight Corners TIF district. “The village has a compelling interest in protecting the integrity of the [Eight Corners commercial] district,” Benjamin said.

THE LANDMARK VIEW
The precedents we set
Y
ou stand at the Memorial Circle, where Brookfield’s Eight Corners converge, and you take stock of the 360-degree view. Starting from the corner that has housed Leo’s Liquors for many, many years – here’s how it looks: recently burned-out former Lagori’s diner/ Nutriworld, vacant land, vacant land, dental office, vacant real estate office, bank drive-thru facility, First National Bank of Brookfield. That doesn’t exactly scream “vibrant.” But that’s not the whole picture. In addition to the bank, there are other businesses that have thrived and have drawn retail customers to the Eight Corners district, including anchors like Tischler Finer Foods and CVS and as well as a variety of retail, service, educational and medical/dental uses. This weekend, the ribbon will be cut on the district’s newest business venture – an art gallery/studio called The Compassion Factory, whose name indicates that it’s not your typical gallery. It has a mission to support Compassion United Methodist Church, a five-year old “seed” congregation that was planted by the United Methodist Church when Brookfield United Methodist Church folded. It’s also fair to say that The Compassion Factory was created, at least in part, to serve as Compassion United Methodist Church. The church itself owns the property, a former dry cleaning business at 9210 Broadway Ave. (next to one of the vacant corners). The hitch in the plan is that religious assembly needs a special use permit in the Eight Corners commercial district (actually in all of Brookfield’s zoning districts), and allowing a church use at or near one of the Eight Corners has been something the village has resisted for many years now. Linda Sokol Francis, the mother of Compassion United Methodist Church’s pastor, the Rev. Karl Sokol, tried and failed to win such a permit to build a much larger church/ community center on land she owns at Eight Corners several years ago. She still wants to realize that dream, saying more recently that the building might also have a residential component to it. While she hasn’t come forward with an actual plan for such a building at this time, we have every reason to believe she will. Francis is determined as well as savvy, having now purchased three of the eight corners as well as other commercial property in the district. She’d like to open businesses that complement the church’s mission at some of those locations. At the same time, the village of Brookfield is laying out a very clear – and in many ways contradictory – plan for Eight Corners, as a more densely populated, thriving commercial/ district. What precedent would granting a use for religious assembly at Eight Corners create? Well, for one thing, it might certainly set the stage for Francis’ much larger vision for a church and its attendant mission at Eight Corners. One thing we’re pretty sure of here is that a storefront church at Eight Corners certainly doesn’t fit in with the village’s vision for the district. While the art gallery’s main purpose is retail, allowing religious assembly there creates such a church. That, for sure, is not a precedent you want to set.

Perfect penmanship positively proper
I
t has always been one of my pet peeves, handwriting. In the larger scheme of things it is not that important, but it does have its place. I excelled in Palmer penmanship while in grade school, possibly because the good sisters stood over us, making us work on the slant of our letters or because I believed I was going to enter the convent and good penmanship was a requirement. Well that never happened, but I do have good penmanship. We first learned how to hold our pencils correctly -- not too tight; let it rest between your fingers so your fingers won’t cramp up. The next step was to get the special lined paper, where your letters had to be perfectly planted on the lower line, although the uppercase Q did dip a bit below the line. In school, we had penmanship about 15 minutes a day, and I will admit to having some difficulty mastering some letters. The good sisters demanded good penmanship and had no qualms about returning a paper – complete with the note “I don’t read hieroglyphics” -- if they felt the words were not legible. While good penmanship may seem trivial to many,
weren’t you a bit concerned when a doctor would write out a prescription that maybe the pharmacist couldn’t read? Did you know your signature is very important? When you go to vote, if it doesn’t match with your signature on your registration, you could be denied the vote. Anyhow, it is your name; you should be proud of it and write it legibly. I know teachers already have a lot to teach in a day and a requirement to teach cursive is another unfunded mandate. Of course, state lawmakers have bigger things to concern themselves with, but I support this, always have and always will. So, as we enter the New Year, let us make a resolution to stay on the lines, cross our T’s, dot our I’s and make sure we complete letters and not let them hang, because it will show that you complete things. You never know who could be reading what you write, and if it is important enough for you to write, it is important to do so legibly. In my best cursive, if it was possible, I would write to you “Happy New Year, may cursive be with you. Write on!

‘Baffling’ decision to put gambling to a vote I wholeheartedly agree with Landmark’s view regarding this inane Riverside video gambling referendum without teeth (“Zombie among us,” The Landmark View, Dec. 13). Why a majority of the board wants to have this toothless referendum is baffling. The board has a pretty good idea (actually a definitive idea) most Riversiders don’t want video gambling in the village. And the notion that this referendum will allow intimidated Riversiders an opportunity to voice their opinion regarding this toothless referendum is ludicrous. The board is insulting Riversiders, insinuating that a significant number of them are afraid to voice their opinion. Riversiders are not afraid to make their opinion known on easy or tough issues. It seems it’s the board who is afraid to make a decision.

English class next fall. Depending on their scores, the reading class will be either 76 minutes long or 50 minutes long. “Many of them will just have the 50-minute reading [class],” Smetana said. Currently, all RBHS freshmen with very low reading scores are placed into a 76-minute extended reading class. Students in the academy will take earth science instead of biology as freshmen, because the vocabulary in the standard freshmen biology course is considered more advance. The students in the academy will take biology as sophomores. Their biology class is expected to be taught by a RBHS science teacher who has a graduate degree in reading. A focus on reading will be infused into all of the freshmen academy classes, and reading specialists will work with subject matter teachers to give students extra attention and help. Depending on their test scores in math, students in the academy will take either extended algebra, a 75-minute version the standard freshman algebra class, or a pre-algebra class. Smetana said that typically only about
10 freshmen take the pre-algebra course. Students in the academy will also have a half or whole period of academic support to make sure they stay on track. Because of the extended classes and academic support, students in the academy will not typically take a social science class as freshmen and will have the opportunity to take only one elective course as freshmen. “Right now, many of these students actually have no electives, so that’s actually an improvement,” Smetana said. As the students placed in the academy go through RBHS, the plan is keep the targeted program in place for these students but reduce the number of classes in the program by one each year. “Our intention is to expand this academy as they go through their career at RB,” Lindquist told the school board. Students in the academy will also be exposed to college and career opportunities through field trips and speakers in an attempt to widen their horizons. All the students in the freshmen academy will be assigned the same counselor
and social worker, and one dean will also be assigned to work with students in the academy to emphasize the team approach. School board members liked what they heard about the academy. “It’s nice to see a plan in place to catch kids before they fail,” said school board member Gina Sierra. Board member Tim Walsh also seemed impressed. “It seems like a very logical approach,” Walsh said. Smetana said that she isn’t too concerned about stigmatizing students who are placed into the academy. “I think we’re excited about being able to create a community among the students and among the teachers to give the students the supports they need and also to be able to expose them to college and careers,” Smetana said. School officials will brief the parents of incoming freshmen about the academy when they meet with incoming freshmen and their parents on Future Bulldog Night on Jan. 17.

Holiday Hoops brighten season

After Christmas day off, Bulldogs, Lions and Friars all return to court By MARTY FARMER
O
Sports Editor
ther than March Madness, Christmas is the best time of the season for high school basketball junkies. After celebrating Christmas, local high school basketball teams all went back to work in holiday tournaments throughout Chicagoland as a midseason gauge of each team’s progress. Obviously, the best gift for hoopsters is a tournament title but simply competing against tough competition is a reward in itself. Here’s an overview of how our local teams are performing at several prestigious tournaments.
RBHS girls Led by breakout freshman Brenna Loftus’ double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, the Bulldogs notched a 53-41 win over Shepard in the opening round of the RiversideBrookfield Holiday Classic. Maddie Meehan (9 points, 6 rebounds), Sarah JnoBaptiste (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Leah Rettke (6 points, 12 rebounds) also contributed for the victors. “Our Christmas Tournament is so much fun,” Meehan said. “There are definitely some very good teams in this tournament.” The Bulldogs defeated Glenbard East 45-38 in another tourney game. In the second round, Niles North edged RBHS 54-43. JnoBaptise led the Bulldogs with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Loftus and Meehan chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Despite the loss of three starters to graduation, the Bulldogs (15-3) are flourishing with a balanced offense, pressure defense and team chemistry. “Everyone on our team truly has a role,” Meehan said. “Whether a player is an attribute on defense, offense, with rebounding, or any other number of things, everyone’s role is needed and acknowledged. Everyone is super different and without what each player brings to our team, I believe we wouldn’t be as successful as we have been so far.”
RBHS boys After losing a pair of games at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, the Bulldogs rebounded with a 72-59 victory over T.F. South. RBHS shot a blistering 67 percent from the floor, including 13-for-21 (62 percent) from beyond the arc. Senior Ryan Cicenas led the way with 23 points. Patrick Hanley (13 points), Zach Vaia (12 points) and Reggie Loury (10 points) also reached double figures scoring. Leading 37-27 at halftime, RBHS outscored the Rebels 24-13 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Cameren Terrell led T.F. South with 21 points. RBHS lost to McHenry 67-56 in the second round of the Tosh tourney. Cicenas finished with 12 points and five rebounds,

The Bulldogs trailed 30-28 at the half, but McHenry extended its lead to 53-38 after three quarters. Gavin Markgraff (20 points, 4 assists) and Patrick Breisch (16 points, 4 assists) paced the Warriors. The Bulldogs opened tournament play with a 46-45 loss to St. Patrick. The Shamrocks made the game-winning three-pointer with about 20 seconds left. Despite the tough loss, RBHS showed its resilience, erasing a nine-point deficit to take the lead with less than a minute remaining. Jason Bageanis and Charles Terry each scored 10 points. Andrew Veon chipped in six points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Cicenas (8 points, 4 rebounds) and Vaia (7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) contributed for RBHS as well.
points, five rebounds and two steals. LTHS was scheduled to play Sandburg in the consolation semifinals later on Dec. 29.
Fenwick boys
The Proviso West Holiday Tournament served as a coming out party for Fenwick’s DJ Steward in 2016. He averaged a team-high 11.3 points and shot 64 percent from the field as a freshman. This year, Steward picked up right where left off at the prestigious tourney. Steward, one of the premier sophomores in the country, scored a game-high 22 points and dished out six assists in an 8250 opening round win over host Proviso West. He scored 16 points in the first half as Fenwick built a 38-23 lead at the half. “As a freshman, DJ led us in scoring File photo in the second half of the season last year,” Fenwick coach Rick Malnati said. LTHS boys Fenwick sophomore DJ Steward, “He’s very humble. If you ask him what is most important to him, he will say As of the Landmark’s early holiday right, has elite talent. that he wants to make his teammates print deadline on Dec. 29, the Lions had won two of three games at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. better. He worked hard during the offseason, his range has Nolan Niego scored 22 points to go with five rebounds and expanded and his ball handling and defense are much better.” three assists in the Lions’ 58-46 win against Lake Forest. Michael O’Laughlin (18 points) and Damari Nixon (14 Tyrese Shines contributed 14 points, while Matt Sloyan and Josh Berry added six points apiece. LTHS made 7 of 10 3-point- points) also reached double figures for the Friars. In the second round, Fenwick fell to reigning Class 2A state champiers, 11 of 13 free throws and outrebounded the Scouts 22-16. The Lions also beat Oswego 61-60 in overtime. Shines on Orr 45-42. Trinity takes second at Dundee-Crown
Curtin call a good one for RBHS
Blazers find defensive identity, win three of four games
Bulldogs’ head football coach will also serve as athletic director in 2018
By MARTY FARMER Sports Editor
In an impressive debut at the 35th Annual Komaromy Classic hosted by Dundee-Crown, the Trinity High School basketball team won three of four games en route to a runner-up finish. More importantly, the Blazers discovered an intangible every team looks for during the season. “We found our identity in this tournament as a really tough, lockdown defensive team,” Trinity coach Mike Valente said. “The story of the whole tourney for us was our defense. We were shutting down teams averaging about 60 points a game to 30 or 40 points. We like to pressure our opponents. It’s a big bully mentality which the girls have embraced.” The only game Trinity didn’t dominate defensively was the final. Undefeated Maine West broke a relatively close game wide open in the fourth quarter to win 54-33. “In the closing seconds of the third quarter, we missed a corner three and Maine West scored a layup at the buzzer,” Valente said. “That sequence pushed their lead to 10 points. It was a big momentum swing and I think we kind of accepted out fate. Maine West is probably one of the top two teams in the state right now, but we just ran out of gas.” In other games, Trinity (11-4) defeated Naperville Central 45-39 in the semifinals, Maine West 4439 in the quarterfinals, and host Dundee-Crown 45-30 in its opener. Trailing Naperville Central by six points after three quarters, the Blazers outscored the Redhawks 21-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the comeback victory. Senior Lauren Lee, a University of California, Santa Barbara commit, scored 16 points and Dayjah Chmielewski added 12 points for the Blazers. Both players earned All-Tournament Team honors. “Lauren made some timely baskets and played great defense throughout the tournament,” Valente said. “Dayjah looks to score and can get her shot off against anybody. She’s young but understanding the game better. This tournament was a coming out party for her.”

Trinity senior Lauren Lee earned All-Tournament Team recognition at the Dundee-Crown Tournament. Another bright spot for the Blazers was the return of sophomore Zyerra Stafford, who had been out for an extended period of time with a knee injury. After missing approximately nine months, Stafford played in two games at Dundee-Crown. “Zee was an all-conference player last season so we’re excited to have her back in the lineup,” Valente said about Stafford. “This is the first stretch of game we had our starting five on the court. This tournament was a great experience and helped prepare us for the rest of the season.”
Fenwick The Friars went 2-2 to finish in sixth place at Dundee-Crown. The
team’s signature win came against New Trier. Trailing the Trevians 43-35 entering the fourth quarter, the Friars forced overtime with a 52-all score at the end of regulation. Fenwick maintained its momentum in overtime to pull out an inspired 68-66 win. The Friars also defeated Prospect 63-45 in the first round; however, lost 63-40 against tourney champion Maine West on Dec. 27. Kate Moore scored 11 points against Maine West, while McKenzie Blaze and Gianni Ortiz contributed six points apiece. Maine South dealt the Friars a 74-52 loss on the last day of the tournament. Blaze and Maggie Van Ermen were named to the All-Tournament Team.

hank God for “best ball” in golf. In 2013, I was invited to take part in a golf fundraiser for the Riverside-Brookfield High School athletic department. My foursome included RBHS head football coach Brendan Curtin, his brother/RBHS alum Brian Curtin, and RBHS boys track and field coach Tim Olson. The aforementioned gratitude towards the best-ball format was our collective abilBRENDAN CURTIN ity to duff and shank our shots all over the RB football head coach golf course at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien. With the best-ball rules in effect, however, we actually managed a few playable shots (mostly from Brian) on each hole. Around the 12th hole, the sky opened up and a torrential rain came down as we ran for clubhouse cover. We eventually finished our “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” round, sharing a lot of laughs and stories, drinking beer and forming a special alliance for the day. I kiddingly referred to the four of us as, “Jack, Tiger, Palmer and Watson.” The biggest takeaway for me that afternoon was getting to know Brendan Curtin. Previously, I had covered a few RBHS football games he coached, and we would see each at other RBHS events. During our day of golf, I learned more about Curtin’s beliefs regarding education, family, community, and, oh yeah, football. That day, I knew he would be a heckuva high school football coach. In his first two years, the Bulldogs went 3-15. At least a few natives were restless. Curtin stayed the course, however, and has subsequently led the team to four straight state playoff berths, highlighted by a 10-2 record and Class 6A state quarterfinals run in 2015. Over the last three seasons the Bulldogs are 25-7 under Curtin. He’s earned the Landmark’s “Coach of the Year” award at our annual Night of Champions event. Last week, I heard the news via email from Landmark colleague Bob Skolnik that Curtin was hired as the new athletic director, officially known as the assistant principal for athletics at RBHS. On Dec. 12, the District 208 school board voted 6-0 to hire Curtin as the school’s next assistant principal for athletics, effective July 1, 2018. He will serve RBHS in both capacities next year as the head varsity football coach and athletic director. Whether Curtin will keep both jobs over the long term will be interesting. He sounds all in. “An important part of leading coaches is to continue to be a coach,” Curtin said. “I believe the shared experience makes me a credible resource for the coaching staff and will help keep me tied closely to the needs of the athletic programs. “I’m fully aware of the responsibilities I’m about to assume.” Curtin, a 1991 RBHS graduate and Brookfield native, aspired for the head football coach and athletic director positions. I think he’s the right man for the both jobs. Curtin is a very committed, intelligent and innovative coach. Those qualities, coupled with his affable nature, will translate well from the gridiron to the athletic director’s office. The only drawback for Curtin might be less time for fun things like playing golf. Based on our performance a handful of years ago, that’s probably a good thing. Good luck, Brendan.
