State funds will pay for razing Altenheim buildings Four abandoned structures to be torn down on village-owned property

Funding from the state of Illinois will allow Forest Park to demolish four abandoned buildings on the village-owned Altenheim property, Mayor Rory Hoskins announced at the June 10 village council meeting.

Hoskins explained that the funding is included in the $40 billion state budget approved by the General Assembly earlier this month. He said village officials “were working hard to obtain” the funding, directly lobbying state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) and state Sen. Kimberly Lightford (4th), whose districts include Forest Park. Hoskins thanked Welch and

Lightford for their efforts. With the funding, the village will be able to demolish the chapel and three other buildings on the Altenheim property at Madison and Van Buren streets as well as cover asbestos abatement costs. See ALTENHEIM on page 10

A Forest Park District 91 employee emailed school parents on June 9, alleging that the district failed to properly investigate what he suspects is a growing mold and air quality crisis at Field-Stevenson Intermediate Elementary School and Forest Park Middle School (FPMS). Superintendent Louis Cavallo said the schools’ air quality and mold levels have all been professionally tested and were found in compliance with federal standards. Stories about animals, particularly wild ones that live in Africa. Tales of adventure and lands unknown, where the writing is so provocative the fantastic stories seem true. The chronicles of a young girl who discovers a magic amulet in her great-grandfather’s closet. “I like reading,” said Phoebe Thompson, a second-grader at Garfield Elementary School. “It’s fun and I like learning things and a lot of times you can learn things from books.” Thompson, 8, set a classroom record this year for reading 10,020 minutes — or 167 hours — which is the most in school history. She said she started reading chapter books at the end of kindergarten and has now moved on to books her parents read, like J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit. Her librarian father James used to read a chapter of it to her each night before she went to sleep and she loved it so much that, once they finished the book, she picked it up and re-read it herself. Three times. “I think it was a good adventure, and also thought it had good imagination,” she said. Her teacher, Marilyn Goldenberg, described Thompson as an articulate, participatory student who always has a book in hand. At the beginning of the year, Goldenberg started a Read-A-Thon contest for her students, their assignment being to read 75 minutes a week to instill a love of reading and get reluctant readers to pick up a book. Every year, she said, she has a high-achieving student who reads more than 4,000 minutes for the year. Thompson more than doubled that. “No one else has ever done that,” said Goldenberg, who has been holding the contest for 22 years. “The child has such a love for reading.” While Thompson agrees she loves reading, she said the Read-A-Thon inspired her to read even more, since it made the activity feel productive. She said she would come home from school every day, settle into her favorite spot on the couch and open up a book. At the beginning of the year, when she learned about the Read-A-Thon challenge, she and her mom quickly determined that she would read more than 75 minutes a week. They decided to aim for 10,000 minutes for the year. By late March, it looked like Thomp-

So they revised the goal to 8,000 minutes, which seemed more achievable. Thompson kept reading. By the end of the year, she not only reached, but surpassed, her original goal. Her family threw a pizza party for her to celebrate her achievement, inviting grandma, grandpa, uncle and aunt. “I feel really happy, proud,” Thompson said. She hopes students find encouragement in her achievement and decide to read more. “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” she offered as advice. Thompson said a few teachers told her she beat the school record for Read-A-Thon a few days ago. At the annual end-of-school assembly, teachers also created a new award to recognize her achievement, giving Thompson the “Super Reader” award and gifting her with a Barnes & Noble gift card. Principal Mary Stauder said she hopes to see more avid readers and will make it an annual award. “What a great example: the family reads together, sets goals together,” Stauder said. “They set the goal, achieve the goal, then create a new goal, another new goal. She’s learning a life skill and enjoys it too.”

The long and winding road to rebirth

ome people say they’ve been “born again” spiritually. Recently, I was “born again” emotionally. I can’t tell you how great it feels. Well, actually I can. But before you can be born again, your old nature has to die. I hit bottom the night I was sitting alone in my basement watching the White Sox. I had no life and was concerned whether the fans behind home plate were enjoying the game. My emotional problems started in childhood. Kids from big families can become starved for attention. My parents could be harsh in disciplining me. I asked for it, though, because I was the only kid in the family who rebelled. I defied my parents, even though my siblings wished I would back down. I carried this behavior to the classroom. I was constantly in trouble and received poor grades. I also alienated my fellow students. They didn’t find my antics entertaining because sometimes I got the whole class in trouble. Meanwhile, I was overdosing on Catholicism, a faith that can shame its followers. (As an adult, I OD’d on Calvinism, which was even worse in the shame department). Plus, I was growing up in a shaky family business,

not knowing when we would see the next check. Financial insecurity can be stressful for a kid. Working in a family business has another downside. Weekends, holidays and evenings didn’t exist. Work was all-important. If we were asked to do a job on Christmas Eve, we did it. We became grinders. We didn’t pay attention to seasons, we just ground our way through. Another trap was being a middle child. I became a peoplepleaser. I let people bully me. My needs came after the needs of others. Then there’s the nature of detective work, the most co-dependent profession I know. I hate the term “co-dependent” but can’t find a better word to describe it. We go to extraordinary lengths to complete dif difficult, sometimes dangerous assignments. I used to tell my workers not to get out of the car if they were uncomfortable. I always got out of the car. I felt that completing the assignment was more important than my personal safety. Crazy! I was good at detective work, though, and started to make some real money. Money can mask many problems. I felt I had overcome my rocky childhood. We were never rich but we were comfortable. We could afford family vacations, trips to

Europe and season tickets to the symphony. We didn’t think twice about eating out. I felt like a good provider for my family. All of that disappeared about 11 years ago. Through no fault of my own, I lost several jobs I loved. I lost 75% of my income. I went from averaging 15 detective assignments a month to 30 for the entire year. I was no longer bringing home the bacon but I could fry it in the pan. I took on cleaning and cooking. I even did the laundry until my wife stopped me. I changed from a fun-loving Irishman into a miserly Dutchman. My wife and I reversed roles. She became the breadwinner and turned into the happy-go-lucky Irish person. I shifted into survival mode, grinding harder than ever. I stopped going out and spent my evenings watching mindless TV. I’m telling you all of this, because many people have suffered the same setbacks that I have — or worse. Next week, I want to get to the good part — the rebirth — and how I got here. THE EVOLUTION OF SWIMMING HOLES XXXX

In circa 1908, Forest Park had the first swim “tank” in west western Cook County, built in the Forest Park Amusement Park. After a fire swept through the south end of the Amusement Park in 1918, which started in the boiler that heated the pool, the park never quite recovered. The pool was closed and a few years later, the entire Amusement Park followed. Then in 1927, Commissioner Kurt Berliner took the initiative, exclaiming it was a shame that the kids did not have a swimming hole in the hot weather. “When we were kids,” Berliner said, “we had swimming holes in the Des Plaines, but now the water is too polluted, they say. If we cannot find a way to purify the Des Plaines water, we should grab off a city block somewhere, excavate it and put in an official pool.” With the cooperation of the

COOL POOL: The first public swimming pool west of Crawford Avenue (now Pulaski ) was the on the grounds of the Forest Park Amusement Park (which is not present day DesPlaines and Eisenhower Expressway and the land around the CTA terminal). Admission included bathing suits. village council and Mayor Gold, the old swimming pool in the defunct Amusement Park, was cleared of rubbish, filled with water, and a fence built (using the lumber from the dance hall in the Amuse-

ment Park). Two lifeguards were hired (one was Vernon Reich, who would later become mayor), the Kiwanis and Lions clubs stepped in with donated slides and Forest Park had a swimming pool once again.

But the old fair grounds were purchased in 1929 and the village kids lost their public pool. With the need for public park land and activities, Forest Park, during the Great Depression, created a park district board in 1934, and purchased 15½ acres from Carl Kastrop, financed through the WPA (Works Progress Administration), a Depression-era government agency. WPA Project No. 2509 included a drainage system under the formerly swampy land, a ridge built on the north, baseball diamonds on the north, and the east section had a wading pool, playground and tennis courts. A swimming pool was planned directly behind the park district building. Opening night ceremonies took place in 1938, with admission rates of 10 cents for children and 25 cents for adults.

Council amends village salary schedule D209 extends Change allows a raise for new executive secretary By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

Most often, when McAdam Jr. people think of pollinators, bees come to mind. That is with good reason: Bees pollinate 90% of the nation’s apple crop, for example. But various other insects, butterflies, and animals also contribute to the pollinator effort. In fact, the more types of pollinators present, the more diverse and healthy is any given ecosystem. So what can you do to contribute to the cause? That’s simple: install plants that promote pollinators! A few recommendations that are as beautiful for the landscape as they are effective at attracting pollinators: Bloomerang Lilac – Similar to other lilacs, this one blooms in the spring. However, as its name suggests, this type blooms again from late summer through fall. Pinky Winky Hydrangea – A panicle-type hydrangea, this has white and pink blooms from midsummer through the end of fall. Butterfly Bush – You guessed it … a favorite of butterflies (as well as other pollinators). A range of sizes from dwarf to full-size are available.

The Forest Park Village Council amended the salary schedule for village employees that was approved less than two months ago, allowing the village’s recently-hired executive secretary to receive a raise. When Tanzla Davis-Rodriguez was hired in May as executive secretary to the mayor and village administrator, her annual salary was $50,000, the high end of the range for that position according to the salary schedule for officials and employees not covered by union contracts. The ordinance establishing the salary scale was approved April 22. However, the village council, June 10, amended the ordinance, changing the range for the executive secretary to $40,000 to $60,000. Mayor Rory Hoskins said he initiated the amendment. “The position previously paid higher,” he explained. “The rate is now suitable to where we are.” Davis-Rodriguez replaced Sally Cody, who has been working part-time since stepping down from full-time duties in April 2018. Cody’s annual salary was $83,000 when she worked full-time. When the council adopted the new salary scale April 22, the range for executive secretary was reduced to between $40,000 and $50,000. Prior to that, it was between $40,000 and $83,000. Davis-Rodriguez’s hiring was approved by the council 5-0 on May 13. In addition to the mayor, she also serves Village Administrator Tim Gillian. The executive secretary performs administrative duties, including coordinating appointments for the mayor. Cody was executive secretary for 19 years and worked for the village since 1981. Commissioner Dan Novak voted against adopting the annual salary scale at the April 22 council meeting, saying the newly-elected

board should “have a say.” The negative vote was a relative rarity for the Forest Park Village Council. Novak and Commissioner Joseph Byrnes were re-elected April 2, while commissioners Rachell Entler and Tom Mannix and Mayor Anthony Calderone did not run again. Hoskins and new commissioners Ryan Nero and Jessica Voogd joined the village council at the May 14 meeting. On April 22, Novak said his opposition to the salary scale was due to the timing of the action. The salary scale is approved annually and covers salaries for officials and employees not covered by union contracts for the following fiscal year, which runs from May 1 of the current calendar year to April 30 of the following year. Although it should be approved prior to the end of the current fiscal year, village officials have in the past approved it after May 1 with increases paid retroactively. This was done as recently as last year, when the salary scale was approved in June. In 2018, village officials explained the delay was due to ongoing negotiations with union employees and their desire to tie salary increases for nonunion employees to those represented by unions. “Let the new council have a say,” Novak said on April 22. “We don’t always approve the salary scale before May 1. I support every employee but I believe in merit raises as opposed to those that are across the board. For fiscal year 2019, the newly elected officials should have a say in it.” The salary scale increases average 2 percent, which is in line with increases received by employees under the contracts with Teamsters Local 705, representing public works employees; Automobile Mechanics Local 701; Firefighters Local 2753; and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3026, which represents clerical workers. Police officers represented by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 211 continue to work without a contract. The previous contract expired April 30, 2018.

During a May 14 regular meeting, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education voted unanimously to approve contract extension for the principals at Proviso East High School and Proviso Math and Science Academy. Patrick Hardy, the principal of Proviso East since 2015, was given a 2-year contract for the 2019-20 and 20221 school years. His contract is effective July 1, and includes a salary of $168,632. Bessie Karvelas, the principal at PMSA since 2013, was given a 2-year contract for the 2019-20 and 202-21 school years. Her contract is effective July 1, and includes a salary of $164,364. The D209 school board was scheduled to vote on a 2-year contract for Nia Abdullah, who was hired in 2017, during a regular meeting on June 11. Her contract, if approved, would include a salary of $163,301.

Park district initiates customer service training Program unrelated to Facebook controversy, executive director says By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

The Park District of Forest Park has instituted annual customer service training for all its staff after a patron complained on social media about how she was treated at the Roos Recreation Center. Jackie Iovinelli, executive director of the park district, said staff training is not being done in response to the resident’s complaint on Facebook. “Here at the park, Facebook doesn’t dictate our daily operations,” Iovinelli said. “If somebody brings to our attention any type of situation, obviously we’re going to refresh staff on everything … not saying anybody did anything right or wrong. It’s just another reminder of how we need to do this or that.” On May 27, resident Johanna Cousin said she ran into the Roos Recreation Center with her 2- and 5-year-old children to take cover from a thunderstorm that had just started. Cousin, an African-American woman who owns Just Cause Dancers, 7228 Roosevelt Road, said her husband and son were already inside the gym playing basketball. She did not respond to interview requests. When Cousin entered the doorway of the facility, “a worker … walked out into the

entryway and got in my face and yelled … ‘you can’t be in here,’” she wrote in a post on Facebook on May 27. Cousin said she told the employee to “get out of my face,” that she was a member of the Roos Recreation Center, and that her husband was inside. The employee allegedly responded, “You people think this is a daycare center; this isn’t Planet Fitness where you can just come and drop your kids off.” Cousin’s husband then came out of the gym and told her to take the kids home. Cousin called the incident “maltreatment” and “racism” and filed a complaint with the Forest Park Police Department. Police Chief Tom Aftanas told the Review that, because no crime was committed, “There was no need for a report. Ms. Cousin was told to speak with park management.” Cousin later posted that the park board discussed the incident, that sensitivity training would take place for all staff, and that “steps are being [taken] with that employee to make sure nothing like this happens to anyone else.” “It truly is a really good park district. However, one person can mess it up. I have never had any issues until now,” Cousin wrote. Iovinelli said the Roos facility manager

alerted her about the incident, and that staff then reached out to Cousin to talk. She said the employee was a year-round, parttime employee at Roos. “She gave us her side of the story and she was very happy with just being listened to,” Iovinelli said, adding that park district staff told Cousin they had a customer service training coming up and promised to address the incident at the training. She said the employee did not want Cousin and her children to go inside the gym since there were programs being run inside. “It was adults playing basketball in the gym and, from a safety perspective, we just wanted to prevent them from going in there,” said Iovinelli, noting that, ideally, the employee should have articulated what the rules are to Cousin and also let her know why those rules exist. “It was just a matter of, she came into the facility, a staff member discussed the rules, but they came to an agreement that it was fine and he was enforcing a rule, and she is now clear on that,” Iovinelli said. “When you’re expressing a rule, it’s always good to know why those rules are enforced.” Iovinelli said staff held a customer service training last week, but it was not in

response to the incident involving Cousin. She plans to make training an annual event around May of each year since that’s when the pool opens and new staff begin work at the facility. The park district’s approximately 50 full-, part-time, and seasonal employees all attended the group training. During the training, she said, park district employees were reminded to “treat others as you would want to be treated. Another thing was [to] invite people into our facilities as if you were inviting them into your home. Listen to people. “We do the greatest thing,” Iovinelli said. “We provide recreation services to the community, and some days people are not having the best day, and it’s our job to just listen to them when they come into our facility because this is their break. This is their extra time that they’re choosing to come spend with us, and sometimes our job is to just listen to them.” About a month before the latest customer service training, Iovinelli said staff also received sensitivity training, where they watched a video provided by the park district’s insurance firm and talked about respect in the workplace. “We’re constantly training and constantly refreshing here,” she said. “Anytime there’s anything, we’re always here, we’re just a phone call away. My door is always open and come on in and let us know how things are going because if you don’t let us know, then we can’t make any improvements on it.”

Chicago man charged after rowdy funeral By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

A Chicago man faces a felony weapons charge, after bringing his gun to a rowdy funeral at Forest Home Cemetery on June 3, according to a report from the Forest Park Police Department. Police responded to a call of multiple shots fired at about 2:05 p.m. on June 3 at Forest Home Cemetery, 863 Desplaines Ave. While police say their investigation concluded that no shots were fired, witnesses said they saw at least 10 individuals pointing guns at one another. Inside the cemetery, police saw two men walking toward them. A black .40-caliber pistol fell on the ground between them and one of the men, Davion Seaberry, reached down to pick it up. Officers yelled for the 19-year-old Seaberry, of Chicago, to put the weapon down and get on the ground. Seaberry reportedly put the gun in his waistband. Officers repeated the or-

der several times and, eventually, Seaberry complied and lay prone on the ground. The other man ran away from the scene. Police say they recovered the semi-automatic handgun from Seaberry and transported him to the station. There, he told police he was at Forest Home Cemetery for the burial service for a friend from the West Side of Chicago who was shot in a gang-related incident. Seaberry reportedly said he found the gun in an alley in Chicago about two months earlier, and brought it to Forest Home Cemetery for protection, since he was afraid of gang retaliation. At the service, Seaberry reportedly told police, multiple people got into an argument and “almost the entire group” pulled out guns. Seaberry said he felt scared and started walking out of the cemetery. He said he was walking so fast that the gun fell out of his waistband and that he did not immediately answer police requests because he did not hear them shouting. He said he has never held a firearm owners identification

Battery at the Blue Line Police arrived at the Harlem Blue Line station, 701 Harlem Ave., about 3:07 a.m. on June 4, on a call that a woman had been struck in the face. When officers arrived, they saw a woman seated on a bench, holding her nose and crying. Her nose was extremely swollen with a cut on its bridge, and blood covered her face, hands and clothing. She was transported to Rush Oak Park Hospital. A witness told police the man who struck her fled west on the platform and exited onto Circle Avenue. Police spotted Charles W. Perry, 38, of Chicago, at the intersection of Desplaines and Harrison. He was with a 39-year-old woman. They were transported to the CTA station, where Perry was identified as the man who struck the woman. At the hospital, the woman told police she uses the Blue Line to get to work at Elite Staffing in Forest Park. She said she was walking toward the exit when Perry accused her of touching him. He then allegedly struck her in the face, which caused her to fall backwards and hit her head on the concrete platform. “That’s what you get for touching me,” Perry reportedly said. The woman denied ever touching Perry. A surveillance video shows that they had no contact before he struck her. Perry was charged with aggravated battery, a felony.

Registration check reveals guns, drugs Officers performed a random registration check on a car at 11:48 p.m. on June 4 on the 200 block of Harlem Avenue. They found that the Nissan Altima’s registration had expired. After curbing the car, they immediately smelled cannabis coming from the vehicle. Driver Hector A. Garcia, 26, of Maywood, told police he had a temporary driver’s license but didn’t know where it was. He handed officers a valid insurance card. Garcia said he and the passenger had just smoked marijuana in the car but there wasn’t any left. When police asked to search the vehicle, Garcia said he actually did have cannabis in the center console and showed it to officers. Police searched the Nissan and found nearly $3,800 in

cash, two more bags of marijuana, a loaded .45 caliber Glock 36, a bag containing suspected cocaine, suspected oxycodone pills, and a baby’s bottle containing a suspected codeine drink. The passenger, 23, told police he used to be part of the Latin Kings gang but got out because he has a child now. He said he had no idea the guns or drugs were in the car, and that he has a medical marijuana card, which was used to legally purchase the cannabis. He was released from the scene. Garcia was charged with unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon, as well as expired registration, possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, manufacture/delivery of cannabis, and manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

DUI driver attempts hit-and-run Officers saw a Ford Explorer strike a parked Toyota at 2:08 a.m. on June 7 at 7505 Madison St. then continue west on Madison Street without stopping. Officers curbed the vehicle on the 7600 block of Madison Street. Driver David Onofre Onofre, 23, of Chicago, reportedly said, “My bad” when police approached the car. He said he drank two beers earlier but could not remember the name of the bar he was coming from. Officers spotted an empty beer can in the center console and another smashed between the passenger seat and center console. Onofre Onofre told them he didn’t stop after hitting the car because there was no room to pull over. Police also found he did not hold a valid driver’s license. After failing the sobriety tests, he was transported to the station, where he refused a breathalyzer. In addition to no valid driver’s license, he was also charged with aggravated driving under the influence (DUI), leaving the scene of an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol.

One ticketed in rowdy funeral Police were monitoring a rowdy funeral traveling west on Jackson Boulevard about 5:06 p.m. on June 8, when they spotted an Infiniti pass more than 10 cars on the left side and

He was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Police Chief Tom Aftanas said that, when he arrived, a large number of vehicles were attempting to exit the cemetery -- at least 25, many with five passengers inside. Several of the vehicles swerved through traffic, with passengers hanging out the windows. Oak Park, River Forest and Berwyn police helped with traffic control on Desplaines Avenue, and officers recorded license plate numbers; police will send the vehicle owners tickets in the mail for local ordinance violations. Aftanas did not specify what violations they would be ticketed for. Often those found participating in rowdy funeral processions are ticketed for violating the village’s funeral ordinance, which states “each driver in a funeral or other procession shall drive as near to the right hand edge of the roadway as practical and safe.” They can also be ticketed for violating Forest Park’s negligent driving ordinance. “Everybody started to flee, it seems like, when these people started displaying guns so, at that point, the service was over, so everybody had to leave to go back to wherever they live at,” Aftanas said.

Juveniles lift packages Police responded to a building on the 7700 block of Van Buren Street at 12:04 p.m. on June 3, on a call that two boys had stolen packages from the building lobby. A witness told police she was looking out her window and saw one of the boys examine a recently delivered package. He then picked up the package and walked south on Van Buren Street. Officers stopped two boys, 12 and 13, walking with the package on the 7700 block of Van Buren. The witness positively identified them as the thieves who took the item. They were transported to the station, where they lied about their names and said they did not have a family member who could pick them up. Officers eventually determined their identity through the iClear database and called the Chicago Police Department for the contact information for a family member. The boys were each charged with theft.

Thief rides off with bike Sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 6, someone stole a bike from a home on the 900 block of Hannah Avenue. The victim told police her garage door was unlocked. The bike was valued at $550.

Burglar takes lawnmower Sometime between 8 p.m. on June 5 and 7 a.m. on June 6, someone stole a lawnmower from a home on Lathrop Avenue. The victim said the mower was worth $190. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 3-9, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

The Juneteenth Pool Party will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on June 15 at the Park District of Forest Park, and Rory Hoskins, the man who started the tradition 11 years ago, will no longer be directly in charge of the community event. With his responsibilities as mayor filling his appointment book, Hoskins no longer had the time to organize what has become a Forest Park tradition. But at a speech at Hope Tabernacle Church in Forest Park on June 9, Hoskins explained to a crowd that on June 19, 1865—a little over two months after Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox—General Gordon Granger led 1,500 Union soldiers into the Galveston, Texas town square and read Presidential Order #3, which declared that all slaves in the former rebel states were now free. “The day is called Juneteenth,” he said, “because up until Presidential Order #3, it was illegal in Texas to teach a slave to read and write, a restriction which almost forced them to speak a dialect other than standard English. Instead of calling the day the 19th of June, therefore, the newly-emancipated slaves called it Juneteenth.” Hope Tabernacle worshippers awarded Hoskins a community service award. After thanking the congregation, Hoskins stressed that what began over a century and half ago as a black celebration of freedom and a companion to the Fourth of July, is in the process of becoming a truly American holiday. He noted that Juneteenth fits right in with other Forest Park celebrations of ethnic roots, like German Fest and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A young performer who calls himself TrillBox AG then rapped about freedom, and Joshua Cousin from the Forest Parkbased Just Cause Dancers performed an interpretive dance. In addition to the church service, two Forest Park residents, Tandra Rutledge—who also serves as director of business development at Riveredge Hospital—and Marjorie AdamClark, have stepped up to co-chair the annual pool party. As in years past, children will play in the pool while adults socialize on the deck and everyone enjoys food from the snack bar. Adam-Clark said the event is a “safe place to ask the tough questions about slavery in American history” and not feel awkward. She held up the image of a dinner table around which people can enjoy food and let their guard down. Adam-Clark referred to racism as a “marketing tool” or a narrative that “cannibalizes people groups,” and that bringing the whole town together to celebrate a historical event where a group of people learned about their freedom “pushes back on that marketing.” “Juneteenth is a great way to celebrate

American—not just African-American— history and diversity in this village,” she said. “It’s messy in the kitchen but at some point the food is going to come out and it’s going to come out good.” Skye Lavin, manager of adult services at the Forest Park Public Library, has also involved the library in gearing up excitement for the event. “I dove into FPPL’s rich holdings of books on African-American history to spark the June-

we don’t know our history it’s hard to progress forward and know what we should continue to fight for.” Ned Wagner, president of Proviso High Schools District 209 board of education, said he views the pool party as part of a long, ongoing process. “To me,” he said, “Juneteenth symbolizes our society’s dealing with the effect of having an enslaved people in our country. So that’s to say there is literally mold everywhere; you’re breathing it in right now. “I’m not going to speak to his motivations or what he believes he’s entitled to. Everything was under control. It’s not his job to be running tests or ordering them.” Daniel Wilson, of Schaumburg, is employed as a D91 health service coordinator until June 20. He accessed parents’ emails and sent “Forest Park Middle School: The Battle of Mold and Leaking Pipe,” a 41-page document that outlines his attempts to get D91 to replace a pipe and perform a mold inspection, through a district health and emergency contact database. He said if he were a parent he would want to know about hazardous mold possibly growing in the schools, and said emailing parents did not constitute “misuse of private information, [because] this is all health-related.” “I’ve had several parents who were very happy that I let them know and were concerned and want to look into this,” Wilson said. “I felt it was my obligation to anyone

who comes into the building; their health and safety is my responsibility. That’s why I did everything possible; that’s why I kept pushing.” Over the past year, Wilson said he has noticed more students and staff who have respiratory issues than in the past. Wilson, who contracted exercise-induced asthma while serving in the military in Iraq, said he was not concerned about his own medical issues but rather that of staff and students. “If it really is mold, it could spread, so it needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. We should be preventing it,” he said. After Wilson complained about the conditions, he said he heard varying stories from school administration — first that the facilities were fine, then that a leaking pipe would be replaced. First that there was no mold just dirt, then that of course there was mold but that it was safe. He said that “multiple” Field-Stevenson and FPMS staff members are also concerned about the building’s air quality and presence of mold but “they are too afraid to lose their jobs to fight this.” Cavallo said the D91 Board of Education will vote on whether to terminate Wilson’s contract at the next regular meeting on June 13. He said the administration has recommended to the board that Wilson’s contract not be renewed. How he will prevent Wilson from continuing to email parents allegations of an unsafe school environment is a “personnel issue,” he said. “I feel tension right now to do the right thing, everything is so ‘hush, hush.’ I just

He said he plans to look for another job as a health coordinator at a school, and dreams of eventually pursuing his doctorate or nurse practitioner’s degree. Wilson said he has no regrets about leaving D91.

Wilson said he received his registered nursing degree from John Tyler Community College in Virginia in 2014 and has since worked in emergency rooms and in Chicago Public Schools. Three years ago, he made his way to D91. Cavallo said he was initially hired on through a contractual agency and then hired on full-time two years ago. When he was hired, Wilson was still pursuing a certificate through the state, Cavallo said. As a health service coordinator, he worked at every school, rotating throughout the week. Wilson said he felt welcome in the schools “99 percent” of the time but didn’t feel Cavallo and other district administrators’ presence in the buildings. “To be honest, when I saw them, it was typically bad news,” he said. Last school year, he said he tried to implement a fragrancefree policy at the schools. When he brought it up, he said Cavallo told him it would have to go through the board. “He was very dismissive, which is how I feel he was with this mold and leaky pipe issue,” Wilson said. He first alerted the district to a suspected mold problem at Field-Stevenson and FPMS on March 15, according to interviews and See WILSON on page 10

ALTENHEIM Vertical funds from page 1 Hoskins said village officials would start working on the project as quickly as possible with demolition “under way in earnest” in the fall. Village officials have been especially concerned for years about the possible collapse of the chapel. The village bought the 11-acre property for $3.6 million in 2001. Over the years, several ideas for development, including from Fenwick High School and the West Cook YMCA, were eventually scrapped. More recently, village officials have discussed creating a cultural park on the property. Following demolition, the area will become a grassy area. Last year and in 2017, efforts to obtain Cook County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to demolish the chapel were unsuccessful. Hoskins explained that the state legislature’s approach to funding capital projects made it difficult to track progress of the village’s request. The Forest Park project is considered a “vertical” project as opposed to a “horizontal” project in the legislature’s capital project terminology, he noted. Horizontal projects include projects such as bridges and roads whereas vertical projects include construction of buildings or, in Forest Park’s case, demolition. In this year’s budget, horizontal projects are funded through a combination of the increase in the state gasoline tax; increases in vehicle registration fees, especially for electric vehicles; and a variety of other miscellaneous fees. Vertical projects are funded by legalized sports betting and expansion of casino gambling; the increase in cigarette taxes; new taxes on parking fees; and extending the state sales tax to purchases made remotely, including online purchases from out-of-state retailers that do not have a brick-and-mortar nexus in Illinois. That meant Forest Park’s hopes for funding were pinned to different pieces of legislation with varying chances of passage. Hoskins said he did not know for sure the funding was secured until he saw Welch the evening of June 5. “He said, ‘Mr. Mayor, it’s official,’” Hoskins recalled. Village officials expressed concerns previously about the condition of the Altenheim buildings, especially the chapel, the condition of which has continued to deteriorate. In the application for CBDG funding last year, village officials cited holes in the roof and bricks falling from the building and expressed “serious concern” that the building might collapse if it is not demolished. The village has installed concrete jersey barriers to protect pedestrians from the falling debris as a temporary measure. However, its proximity to public space used for community events such as the Forest Park Ribfest and use of the parking lot at those times was termed a safety hazard.

That day, he emailed Cavallo and Bob Laudadio, D91’s superintendent of buildings and grounds, complaining of a leaking pipe and dark ceiling tiles that appeared to contain mold. He said building administration had brought the discoloration and smell up multiple times before but “nothing has been done.” About an hour later, Laudadio responded to the email, saying the smell and discolored tiles had all been investigated and that the school environment was safe. “Frankly speaking, you may be stepping way out of your lane to inspect areas of a school building when you are not a licensed plumber, certified building engineer, or an air quality specialist,” Laudadio wrote back. He did not immediately respond to an interview request. Wilson said he was “disheartened” by Laudadio’s response and felt the district didn’t take his complaints seriously, writing that FPMS’ discolored tiles and odor were unlike anything else he’d experienced in his career. He also noticed that some staff members struggled with asthma and allergies at work, but when they returned home, their symptoms were resolved. Five minutes after receiving Laudadio’s email, Wilson sent him a link from the National Association of School Nurses advocacy section, which states school nurses must prevent environmental hazards. Cavallo said Wilson’s job was to treat student injuries, administer medicine and manage medical files — not to order building inspections. “You do what your employer asks you to do via your job description; that’s for any employee in any organization anywhere,” Cavallo said. Shortly after he sent the email, Wilson said Laudadio showed up, “looked him dead in the eye” and started yelling that the discoloration was dirt, there was no issue with a leaky pipe, and that inspectors had already come through and everything was fine. He said Laudadio later came to him and apologized, saying he was upset that Wilson had included Cavallo on the email exchange, since he is “the highest in the district,” and that he was unsure what was causing the smell but was working on it. About two weeks later, Wilson followed up with Joe Pisano, principal of FPMS, asking if there were any updates. Pisano replied that the issues would be fixed over spring break. Pisano did not immediately respond to an interview request. When Wilson returned from spring break on April 29, he said he asked the principals if they knew if anything had been fixed. They replied that they were “unaware of any changes or correction.”

Wild West burial

or a couple of years now, we’ve been writing about rowdy funerals. These are the riotous processions, mostly from the city, heading west to Forest Park’s multiple cemeteries or through town en route to Hillside and its cemeteries. In a time when all of us are being rightly challenged to broaden our definitions of cultural norms, these funeral treks are often fully out of control, a threat to participants, a threat to those on the sidelines, a threat to police who are trying to keep the lid on. As political leaders, public safety personnel, and funeral directors have begun to meet in past months, there was some expectation of a collaborative plan that might lead to at least being able to anticipate timing of the processions and some agreed upon enforcement measures. Recording license plate numbers and issuing local ordinance violations was one modest idea being carried out by Forest Park police. All of that goes somewhat by the wayside though in the aftermath of the June 3 madness that took place once the mourners gathered for the burial at Forest Home Cemetery. Forest Park police arrested one man after he reportedly displayed a handgun. But witnesses report that perhaps 10 people had guns drawn during the burial. No shots were fired. Police Chief Tom Aftanas said he believes the burial was for a person who died by gun violence. Rightly, Forest Park police focused on clearing the scene as quickly as possible rather than on more arrests. But what are the steps to come? No simple answers, but also no way such outrageous behavior can be countenanced.

Principal of the thing

Principals of two of the three high schools in Proviso Township had their contracts extended for two years recently by the administration and school board. Only seems like a big deal when you look back just a handful of years to the era when superintendents and principals in this district came and went (and sometimes came again) in a chaotic charade. You can’t have momentum until you have stability. You can’t have a vision until you have a trusted foundation. You can’t execute a plan until you are a known and respected leader. We have over years heard people disparage principals as placeholders, promoted Peter Principle-like until they are meek and inoffensive. And sure, we’ve all seen a few burnouts and flameouts in principal offices. However in PMSA’s Dr. Bessie Karvelas and East’s Dr. Patrick Hardy, District 209 has strong leaders. The contract status of West Principal Dr. Nia Abdullah will be discussed by the board this week. We try not to play favorites but Proviso East is the school we cover most thoroughly and the school that hit the deepest bottom under previous administrations. By our observation Patrick Hardy is a charismatic, determined and connective leader. Students, parents, staff and visitors respond to his energy and ideas. Stronger days are coming to our public high schools and, in that process, better days are ahead for Forest Park.

Change without notice

managed to visit Havana before the rules changed (again). I’m glad I did. I’ve experienced island life before (lived in the Florida Keys) and I spent years in a soul-crushing dictatorship (Roosevelt Jr. High Class of 1988), but combining the two was a new experience. Turns out it’s a new experience for everyone. We had booked a three-hour walking tour of Old Havana to get us started. You know that disclaimer “Tour is subject to change without notice”? What I have never really internalized is that part of the “change without notice” might be both the mode and the sights. We waited for the walking tour to start until someone from the cruise line came and told us our walking tour of Old Havana was now a bus tour of Havana’s historic highlights. Someone asked the cruise person why the tour was changed so significantly (and also starting 60 minutes late besides) and she shrugged wearily and said “They are still figuring this out.” So, y’know, fine. We got on the buses and were driven to a giant cemetery. One of the reasons I had voted for the walking tour was that there were no cemeteries. With the exception of paying respect to specific graves, I don’t understand why people cheerfully visit cemeteries on vacation. While I think about death enough already, thank you, I should note that my objection isn’t about the morbidity, it’s about the monotony. I don’t need to go look at graves or monuments. I especially don’t need to look at row after row of identical stones. They’re not doing anything interesting with their dead – taxidermy or whatever – they’re just sticking them in the ground with flowers. I can see that anywhere. I did enjoy seeing Che Guevara’s house, largely because the tour guide threw some absolute top-shelf shade as we drove by. Che’s house is on the far side of the harbor from downtown Havana, and has approximately the same placement, prominence, and view as the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. As if this were not enough, the house wears as decoration an enormous replica of Che’s autograph. Our tour guide, as we drove past, said “This was the home of Che Guevara, hero of the revolution, during his time as commander of the military,” and then with FLAWLESS comic timing

added “As you can see, it’s quite modest.” Eventually we got off the bus. It being 1:30 by now, we were ravenous, and walked into Old Havana in dire need of some food. We found a restaurant perhaps a hundred yards into the city, read the menu posted outside on a whiteboard, and grabbed a table. The server walked by after a bit, and we flagged her down and attempted to order. We were not terribly successful. Five minutes’ discussion in pidgin Spanish of what they did not have peaked with her saying “We have one san’wich.” We ordered it, though between the language barrier and the Communism we weren’t at all certain whether she meant “We have one kind of sandwich” or “We have one total sandwich.” It was the former, which we discovered after waiting 40 minutes while drinking Cuban coffee and guava juice, both of which were wonderful. The sandwiches were less wonderful; lunch-bag grade ham-and cheese on cottony Cuban bread. The Cuban Mix is one of the world’s great sandwiches, and this was like a version of it concocted for an airline meal in 1975. But whatever, we were by that point ready to eat the stray cats that hung out with us while we listened to the outstanding salsa band. We wandered around Havana for the next six hours – got gelato (great), pizza (awful), souvenirs (plentiful and crazily inexpensive) and visited several museums (excellent new perspective, hilarious translations). Rode in a late-fifties Dodge convertible something or another, which was beautiful to behold and I wish American cars still looked like that but the joy was somewhat offset by the odd sensation of riding in an open vehicle on a bench seat without even the option of a seatbelt. The people of Havana with whom we interacted were much nicer to the tourists than most American tourist-town residents tend to be, and in conversation with at least two we got to the point of warmly agreeing that all governments and politicians everywhere are so terrible that we normally would all just vow not to hold anyone from anywhere responsible for the behavior of the fools and crooks and ideologues in charge of their home country, which I thought was a lovely display of universal humanity and a sensible policy to adopt permanently.

Jeanne O’Connor, 85 District 91 educator Jeanne P. O’Connor, 85, of River Forest, and a longtime educator in Forest Park, has died. She graduated from Trinity High School in 1951, Rosary College in 1955, and Northeastern University with a master’s degree in Education. Her teaching career started at Northlake District 83, overseas to Madrid and Zaragoza in Spain, and she retired from For-

est Park District 91. She was an avid bridge player and world traveler, and she lived life with an intense desire for learning and adventure in all things big and small. Jeanne O’Conner was the daughter of the late Thomas Sr. and Pauline O’Connor (Herman); the sister of Father James E. O’Connor O.C.S.O. and the late Thomas F.

O’Connor Jr. (Air Force lieutenant, WWII); and the godmother, “aunt,” cousin and friend to many. Visitation was on June 5 at River Forest’s St. Luke Catholic Church, 528 Lathrop Ave., followed by Mass, with interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. The Village of Oak Park will receive sealed proposals at the Office of the Village Engineer, 201 South Boulevard, Oak Park, Illinois 60302, until 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 27, 2019 and at that time will be publicly opened and read aloud for the following Village Project: 19-14, Bridge Rehabilitation Improvements. In general, the improvements consist of installation of permanent and temporary protective shielding, ADA ramp construction, deck joint seal replacement, various sidewalk, parapet and deck slab repairs, CSX and CTA coordination, and traffic control and protection. Bridge work will be performed in stages to maintain traffic over the bridges throughout construction. Night work is anticipated for portions of the improvement due to restrictions of lane closures on I-290.
