After months of preparation, Living Fresh Market has scheduled its grand, ribbon-cutting opening for May 16,

with a soft opening planned for May 8. Co-owner Dan Casaccio said staff has been working until midnight every night to get the new store in order, putting up shelves, stocking items, painting the ceiling and more. He said the soft opening is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

roviso Township High Schools District 209 of officials held the fourth, and by far the largest, master facilities plan community engagement session at Proviso Math and Science Academy, 8601 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Forest Park, on April 24. More than 400 people packed the school’s auditorium to hear architects from Perkins and Will, the architectural firm contracted last year to facilitate the master facilities planning process, present a series of long-term facilities concepts for the school. Last month’s meeting was the first where community members could actually see visual schemes of what future changes to the district’s three campuses might look like. The architects presented three concepts for each school. Two of the nine concepts — which were also the most unpopular among those in attendance at the meeting — called for Proviso East and Proviso West accommodating PMSA, which would be relocated from See FACILITIES on page 4

The day the filmmaker is coming to town

he Day the Circus Didn’t Come to Town” is the working title of a documentary film being made by Chuck Williams to observe the 100th anniversary of the Hagenbeck-Wallace train wreck, which took place on June 22, 1918. Chuck lives in Hammond, Indiana, where the wreck occurred. The victims are buried in Showmen’s Rest at Woodlawn Cemetery here in Forest Park. That plot belongs to the Showmen’s League of America, and Chuck will be filming their remembrance ceremony at the cemetery on May 17. Chuck also filmed an interview with me in April. An ex-employee of Woodlawn recommended me as someone who had knowledge of the train wreck and Showmen’s Rest. Most of my knowledge comes from a book titled, No Performances Today by Walter A. Reeder Jr. I over-prepared for the interview by rereading the book and taking copious notes. When we were looking for a place to film, Augie Aleksy graciously allowed us to use his store, Centuries & Sleuths on Madison Street. Augie even came in on his day off ! I figured having a bunch of books behind me would make me look smarter. Chuck had me sit in a high-backed chair and set up two cameras to capture the interview. I talked about Showmen’s Rest and was all

set to launch into an account of the train wreck. But Chuck had already filmed an expert on that subject. He traveled all the way to Beaver Crossing, Nebraska to interview Richard Lytle, author of The Great Circus Train Wreck of 1918. He also visited Peru, Indiana, the former winter quarters of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. It is now the home of the International Circus Hall of Fame. The town celebrates Circus Week, featuring performances and a parade by local school kids. Chuck filmed the festivities and interviewed performers. He was not as fortunate in filming at the crash site. The railroads refused him permission, so he will have to film from property owned by the City of Gary. The Showmen’s League of America, though, has been nothing but gracious in helping Chuck complete the film. They have given him unprecedented access and he will film an interview with its president, Guy Levitt, at the May 17 event. They are also allowing him to conduct a study to disprove that Showmen’s Rest is haunted. They will record at Brookfield Zoo and the cemetery simultaneously to demonstrate the source of animal noises at Showmen’s Rest. Chuck also interviewed Mayor Calderone about International Clown Week cel-

ebrations at Woodlawn. This tradition has been discontinued by the new owners of the cemetery, Service Corporation International (SCI). In my interview, I criticized this decision. Some believe that holding a celebration featuring circus performers is disrespectful to the victims. I can’t think of anything more fitting. SCI also had a list of requirements that Chuck had to fulfill to film at Woodlawn. They will not permit the public to attend a wreath-laying ceremony Chuck has planned for the 100th anniversary, for insurance reasons. Nevertheless, Mayor Calderone and Mayor Greer, of Peru, will attend the ceremony. There will also be a pastor from Christian Fellowship Church in Hammond, the church Walter Reeder Jr. attending. I purchased Reeder’s book in 2006, and it has been an invaluable source of information and images about the train wreck and Showmen’s Rest. Now, thanks to Chuck, we’ll have a documentary to describe the tragic events. D209 board elects new officers Ned Wagner replaces Theresa Kelly as board president

During a special meeting on April 30, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education elected a new slate of board officers, district officials confirmed on May 2. District 209 officials did not provided the breakdown of last Monday’s vote for new officers. Board member Ned Wagner was elected to replace Theresa Kelly as board president, Sam Valtierrez was elected to replace Amanda Grant as board vice president while Grant was elected to replace Claudia Medina as board secretary. Kelly had been board president since last April, when board members Rodney Alexander, Della Patterson, Grant and Valtierrez were all elected on the Proviso Together ticket — the very same ticket on which Wagner and Medina were elected to their first terms, and on which board veteran Kelly was reelected to another term.

This had been Kelly’s third time serving as board president. In 2016, Kelly was ousted as board president weeks after former board members voted to change board policy to limit the term of the board president from two years to one year, angering many residents who thought the move was politically motivated. After the April 2017 election gave Proviso Together a seven-member super-majority, Kelly was voted board president again. “I am honored and excited to be part of this amazing team serving the truly incredible students, staff and stakeholders f our Proviso Community,” Wagner, who chairs the board’s policy committee, said in a statement released by the district. Wagner lives in Forest Park. His oldest son attends Proviso Math and Science Academy. In the statement, Valtierrez, a Melrose Park resident who chairs the board’s facilities and fleet committee, lauded the board’s diversity and the “love we embrace for the children of these communities.” Grant, a Westchester resident who chairs

FACILITIES Nine options from page 1 its current campus in Forest Park to either of the two other schools. “Tonight we’re in concept testing,” said Mark Jolicoeur, a Perkins and Will architect. “For each of the three schools we have different concepts. They are nothing more than that. They are ideas to test how the sites can work.” All of the concepts addressed the high square footage per student at all three of the campuses, each of which has a classroom utilization rate of less than 70 percent — well below the recommended rate of around 85 percent — and hosts far fewer students than they have the capacity to host. Two of the three concepts for East would entail moving the faculty, staff and student parking lots that are currently west of 1st Avenue onto the school’s main campus; adding a new student commons area in the center of the main academic building; either building a new fieldhouse or extensively renovating the current one; consolidating and reconstructing PE athletics facilities in the fieldhouse; and upgrading the football stadium (including improving the track and field space); among other improvements. The third concept for East would entail building a space for PMSA’s campus at the corner of 1st Avenue and Madison St. while building an academic addition for East. Similarly, the third concept for West entails relocating PMSA’s campus into a separate wing of the campus. All three concepts for PMSA would entail relocating the parking lot entry further north and providing additional drop-off and pick-up access. A new lane dedicated to student drop-off and pickup would be designed to lower congestion and create safer site circulation, architects said. In addition, all of the PMSA concepts would include a new student commons area featuring a secured entry that would allow for after-hours use, and the addition of a new play

field with a walking track. The first PMSA concept entails the addition of a new gymnasium and locker rooms while the second concept only features new performing arts and woodshop space. The third concept for the school features both new gymnasium and locker space, as well as new performing arts space (additional space for music instruction would replace the woodshop space). District 209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez started the meeting off by addressing the public reaction that accompanied the third community engagement session, where Perkins and Will publicly broached the possibility of closing PMSA’s

Forest Park campus and presented a series of options — all but one of which called for relocating the magnet school to Proviso East in Maywood and/or Proviso West in Hillside. At the time, Perkins and Will representatives stressed that the options were merely preliminary and were generated based, in large part, on public input gathered during previous sessions. The architects also acknowledged the difficulty of even posing the possibility of consolidating the campuses, which touched off a storm of reaction, particularly among PMSA students and parents — some of whom mistakenly conflated the architectural concepts for imminent board decisions, among other misunderstandings about the facilities process. The architects’ preliminary scenarios also sparked a debate among many community members that has been constant since PMSA opened roughly a decade ago inside of a converted office building once owned by Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Many PMSA parents and students have argued that the magnet school’s location in a separate building from East and West — both of which lag in academic performance and experience more discipline issues — is a large part of PMSA’s appeal, allowing students who may not feel comfortable at the other two schools a space to thrive. Critics of the selective enrollment school, however, have claimed that it has been a source of stigma for students at East and West, many of whom may feel alienated from PMSA’s many successes, which include being ranked among the top suburban high schools in the Chicago area. During last month’s community engagement session, supporters of PMSA as a campus separate from East or West seemed to dominate the public feedback portion of the meeting, plastering the poster boards depicting the two concepts that entail PMSA merging with East and West with red dots indicating “something that you don’t think works,” architects said. In his opening remarks, Supt. Rodriguez seemed to address the public divide while clarifying how the master facilities process works. “We value all students and all children in our school districts,” he said, before adding that the district is “not closing any schools. That’s not what the discussion is about. The Board of Education and superintendent are not in discussions about closing any schools.” Rodriguez emphasized that the architect’s concepts are only options that have not yet been finalized. Once finalized, “those options will become recommendations,” he said. “I will have a recommendation and the board will have a recommendation,” Rodriguez added. “The board will vote on that recommendation maybe by October or November.” The D209 school board will hold a listening session for community members to give input on the plan on May 15, 6 p.m., at PMSA. Man with knife seizes car A woman parked her car about 12:25 a.m. at Blueberry Hill when a man with a knife demanded her car on May 6, according to a police report. The man approached 427 Desplaines Ave., went up to the driver’s side of her Ford and put a knife to her throat, saying, “Get out of the car; I need the car.” The woman pleaded with the man to keep her keys, and got out of the vehicle. The man then got in the car and headed north on Desplaines. The woman said her cellphone and wallet, which contained a Chase card, Wintrust bank card, US Bank card, $20 cash and a medical card, were in the car.

Police ran the driver’s name through their system and found he had a warrant out retail theft. He received a verbal warning for possession of narcotics paraphernalia and traffic violations. Officers also ran the North Riverside passenger’s name through their system and discovered she had three warrants out for arrest in DuPage County. The woman was transported to DuPage County Jail.

Man jumped after a night of drinking

Catalytic converters stolen from cars

Police responded to a call at the intersection of Circle and Marengo Avenues about 2:25 p.m. on May 6, and found a man with a bloody lip, torn T-shirt, and scrapes on his cheeks, forehead, chest and stomach. The man told police he felt “dizzy.” He said he had been walking home after drinking on Madison Street and approached the 7300 block of Circle when four men jumped out of a Chevy Suburban and started beating him with rocks and fists. Some of the men tried to go through his pockets but weren’t able to take his wallet or cellphone. The Suburban was last seen traveling southbound on Marengo. The man was transported to Loyola University Medical Center.

■■At some point between 7 p.m. on April 29 and 11:30 a.m. on April 30, someone removed the catalytic converter from a Honda parked at 7500 Beloit. The car owner said she noticed something was wrong when she tried to start the car and heard a loud noise coming from underneath the vehicle. She called AAA, and the tow truck driver told her the catalytic converter was missing. ■■In a separate incident, someone sawed off the catalytic converter of a Toyota parked in the lot shared by The Pines and Oak Leaf Lounge, 7412 Harrison St., between 8 p.m. on April 29 and 12 p.m., April 30.

McDonald’s manager punched after asking woman to leave

A Berwyn woman’s wallet was stolen from her car after she parked near the 7700 block of Van Buren about 12 p.m. on May 1. When she returned to her car an hour later, she found that someone had broken into the vehicle and taken her wallet, which she had hidden underneath a jacket on the front seat floor. She told police she found the right passenger door of her car not closed all the way and unlocked. Her wallet contained $40 cash, at least two bank cards and her driver’s license.

A manager at McDonald’s, 420 Desplaines Ave., called police after discovering a woman inhaling from a lit object in the bathroom about 10:10 a.m. on May 5. The manager said a female employee entered the woman’s room after a woman had been in there for 20 minutes. When she opened the door, she saw a woman lighting an object on fire and inhaling from it. The manager told the woman to leave the restaurant. The woman punched the manager in the chest, and swung at him several more times before fleeing eastbound on Madison Street.

Drug paraphernalia discovered during traffic stop Police attempted to pull over a driver for not wearing a seatbelt and not using a turn signal about 3:54 p.m. on April 30 near the 200 block of Harlem Avenue. The driver ignored the officer’s signals, kept driving and eventually pulled into the parking lot at 23 N. Harlem Ave. in Oak Park. Police asked for the McHenry man’s identifica-

Thief rides off with bike At some point between 8:30 and 10:20 p.m. on May 6, a bicycle valued at $500 was stolen from a garage on the 400 block of Hannah. The man said he left the overhead door of his garage open. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, April 30-May 6, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

District Kitchen and Tap almost ready Harrison Street eatery plans to be open for What’s Blooming on Harrison By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Staff Reporter

Patrick O’Brien, owner of Forest Park’s Scratch Kitchen and Oak Park’s Scratch on Lake, is almost ready to open his new restaurant, but this time in the Oak Park Arts District. O’Brien said in a telephone interview that the buildout of District Kitchen and Tap, 220 Harrison St., is complete and they are currently training waiters and cooking staff. He hopes to open the new joint in time for the What’s Blooming on Harrison arts festival set for May 19. The philosophy of the new restaurant, he said, is: “Phones down, bottoms up.” “We’ve got a junk bucket that we put on the table,” he said. “The whole thing is: Put your phone away and talk to people you don’t know.” He called the new restaurant a meeting spot for folks in the neighborhood as well as a destination. O’Brien said nothing has changed in concept since last June when he told Wednesday Journal that patrons would be able to build their own pizza and their own nacho plates. Last year he said that District Kitchen and Tap would also offer “on the dough” salads, which will be served on flavored pizza crusts.

The idea with the made-to-order pizza and nacho plates is “building your own and sharing your food,” he said. District Kitchen has multiple rooms and includes a stage where live acts will perform. He plans to hold open-mic nights, live-band karaoke, DJs and poetry nights. The full bar will offer 12-14 taps, about 80 percent of which will be provided from breweries within 20 to 30 miles, said O’Brien, adding that the restaurant will a place where you can come in and watch the game in a “totally relaxed and chill” environment. O’Brien said he’s still working to finalize permits with the village of Oak Park, noting, “Come hell or high water, we’re going to be open for What’s Blooming fest.” In other Scratch news, O’Brien said he recently reduced his liquor license at Scratch Deli in Forest Park to only beer and wine. He chose to remove liquor from the mix because that business is focusing more on catering these days, he said. “The [catering] business has grown, so it’s overtaking the café and becoming a private event space,” he said. “We’re finding our niche there,” he added. Forest Park Bank celebrates 75 years in business Plans to introduce new financial technology, add additional branches By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Officials from Forest Park National Bank are preparing for its 75th anniversary party on May 15 by reflecting on the bank’s history and future as a community institution in and beyond Forest Park. And by changing its name. The bank hired Forest Park-based Yearbook Design Studio to redesign the logo, which has shortened the bank’s name from Forest Park National Bank & Trust Co. to Forest Park Bank. That will be reflected when the bank unveils its new logo on May 15. “Approximately 15 years ago, there were like 12 or 13 community banks in this area and now we’re down to two,” said Jerry Vainisi, board chair and CEO. “You have to adapt to changing conditions.” As banks in Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest and surrounding areas have closed or merged into regional and national banks, Forest Park Bank survived, thanks to its customer-first philosophy, understanding its niche, and investment in the community, said Vainisi, whose previous career as the general manager of the Chicago Bears coincided with the team’s only Super Bowl win in 1986. When Vainisi took over the bank in 1999, he said assets were about $47 million. Over the next 10 years, they more than doubled to $125 million in worth. After he hired Dan Watts as president in 2010, the bank has grown to $250 million today. Watts is a former Forest Park village council member.

To celebrate its success and longevity, the bank is throwing a party for its customers from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 15 at the main bank, 7348 Madison St. O’Sullivan’s Public House, Starship Subs, Exit Strategy will be among those catering the event. “We are a 1943 bank in a lot of ways and we’re a 2018 bank in a lot of other ways,” Vainisi observed, adding: “Show me a vibrant downtown area and I’ll show you an area of town that has a bank that’s actively involved in the community.” Forest Park Bank’s future growth, he said, depends on adapting to future challenges and reflecting on lessons learned from the past. In 1999, when local business leaders and political officials organized the Main Street Redevelopment Corporation, Forest Park National was an integral part of that independent group, recruiting new businesses to the street, offering young entrepreneurs loans, and refurbishing buildings to suit the needs of individual compa nies. Gaetano’s Restaurant, Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor, O’Sullivan’s, and many more benefitted from the bank’s community involvement. The Main Street Redevelopment Corporation has now been folded into the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce. “Our customer base is small businesses, commercial real estate and then consumer products.” said Watts. “If you look up and down Madison Street the overwhelming majority of small businesses are customers of this bank in one form or another. We look at character as well as cash flow and credit in our underwriting of loans.” When the financial crisis hit in 2008, Vainisi looked outward again. He and his ex-wife gave up their total owner-

ship of the bank and issued stock to bring in additional capital, which he said got the bank through the tough time. Forest Park National withstood the banking crisis better than the big banking companies, without funding from the Treasury Department’s $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. “When the recession hit, the government came on with all kinds of regulations which they’re now cutting back on some. I’m not saying that they didn’t need to step in and act, which they did,” Vainisi said. “It’s like a lot of things, when something goes wrong, you watch the pendulum swing way over and it eventually comes back to where it needs to be.” Now the bank plans on opening additional branches in Oak Park and River Forest as it strives to make banking as convenient as possible for customers. It also plans on introducing new financial technology, such as allowing customers to deposit a check by taking a picture with their smartphone. “We’re using technology to reach not only our existing client base within Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest and Maywood, but offering those same services to people who have moved away,” said Watts, who also serves as chairman of the Illinois Bankers Association trade group. “Whether it’s children of some of our long-term customers or others, technology is changing everybody’s marketplace.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

A new beauty studio recently opened on Roosevelt Road. Employees at Seva Beauty, 7505 W. Roosevelt Rd., said they were too busy to answer questions about the business when the Review called, but the store opened on May 3. It is the seventh location operated by Vipul and Ajay Patel, according to a release by the company. Seva offers first-time customers $5 eyebrow shaping, according to its website. Customers can get their brows threaded — a process that removes unwanted facial hair by twisting a cotton thread around the follicle — or waxed, which uses wax to remove unwanted hair. Customers can also get their eyebrows tinted, makeup done, facials and lash extensions at the new studio. “Seva Beauty is the pioneer of the fastcasual spa, with nationwide locations that maximize one-stop-shop convenience and price points everyone can afford,” the website states, though it also specifies that prices and services might vary by location. Steve Glinke, director of the Forest Park Department of Public Health and Safety, said the new Seva took about six weeks to build out. “It’s filled another vacancy,” he said. Forest Park’s new Seva joins about 40 other Seva Beauty’s in Illinois. The studios are independently owned and operated in 32 states, according to the website. Another Seva is located inside the Walmart Supercenter at 1300 Desplaines Ave. The Roosevelt Road studio is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Sunday, when it’s open from 12 to 5 p.m. Appointments are not necessary. Proviso East senior shines in Palestinian dress at prom Senior spent months designing a thobe for April 27 soiree By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Raneen El-Barbarawi brought a piece of Palestine to the Proviso East High School prom on April 27, dressing that night in a traditional dress designed to show off her heritage. “I’m the only one really out there for my Arabian culture at school, and I want to embrace and show them how beautiful it is,” said El-Barbarawi, a senior, adding that aside from her five sisters, the 18-year-old is the only Palestinian student at Proviso East. “Everyone was surprised, overwhelmed with how beautiful it was because it’s different,” she said. For prom, El-Barbarawi wore a traditional thobe, an ankle-length gown commonly worn in the Arabian Peninsula that’s materials, dyes and patterns are emblematic of Palestinian history and daily life. El-Barbarawi’s thobe was made of two different fabrics — both light pink, her favorite color — with embellishments of flowers indicative of Palestinian design and calligraphy, and glitter and beads to signify the flashy Arabian fashion aesthetic. She then trimmed the tail of the gown in pink fur, added rhinestones to the top and sheer sleeves. She already had a gold necklace inscribed with her Arabic

name — which translates to “loud and beautiful sound” in English — and she borrowed gold bracelets and a ring from her mom. To complete the ensemble she draped a handmade gold headpiece across the bridge of her nose and got henna on her hands. El-Barbarawi then went to straightening her hair, which took about an hour and a half, and travelled to a professional’s house to get her makeup done. The thobe designer then came over and helped her put on the heavy outfit. All in all, it took about five hours for El-Barbarawi to get ready. She attended prom with her best friend of 14 years, Yamilet Flores, who wore a matching light pink dress. “I’m usually a really unique person [and] I’m usually the outcast, so I just wanted to find a dress that screams me and yells me,” El-Barbarawi said. “I’m a really extra and dramatic person. I just incorporated all those Arabic ideas and themes and that’s what inspired me.” A Melrose Park resident, El-Barbarawi was born during a trip her mom, Samireh, made for a wedding to Halhul, Palestine, when she was eight months pregnant. The two stayed in Palestine for a short time, but eventually returned to America where El-Barabarawi was raised. Growing up, El-Barbarawi visited Palestine a few times, most memorably during her summer vacation when she

The soft opening is intended to help employees work out the kinks of running a new store and practice interacting with customers. “There is a lot of hard work in this, trying to make this look warm and not like a warehouse,” he said. In constructing the new store at 7520 W. Roosevelt Rd., Casaccio said he spent about three months researching what brands to carry and how many items could fit on the shelves. He said he stocks items from more than 400 vendors—including many Chicago area brands like Home Run Inn, Iltaco Foods and Parker House Sausage Company—as well as those from across the world, from Chile to China, Italy to India. He said Living Fresh also offers items that are organic and gluten-free. “What makes us different from Ultra and other stores is that we have every nationality represented,” he said. For the past four months, he and staff have been setting up the store. He said about 90 percent of his 100 person staff is from the area, with a few hired from the old Ultra Foods Living

Fresh replaced. Ultra Foods closed in June 2017 after parent company Strack & Van Til went bankrupt. The mall is owned by Forest Park Plaza LLC, a for-profit entity of Living Word Christian Center. Living Fresh has entered a lease with Forest Park Plaza LLC that stretches about 40 years. After buying the 70,211 square-foot place, Living Fresh started construction in January and Casaccio set to painting the store. He shot more than 1,600 gallons of charcoal paint at the ceiling to replace the old white color. He also took out three shelves from Ultra, ensuring aisles are wide enough for more than two carts to pass through, and so that Living Fresh would have room for a coffee bar, prepared food section, sandwichmaking and grilling station, juice bar and soup and salad space. “If you like the fish, we’ll cook it,” he said, adding that customers can buy fresh fish from the market and that Living Fresh employees will grill it on the spot. After the grand opening, Living Fresh will offer every customer a free cup of coffee for two weeks. Casaccio’s also brought in an outside pastry specialist to make sure the store is

stocked with cakes for Mother’s Day on May 13, which will cost $8.99 each. The store will only serve beer and wine—no hard alcohol—and plans to set up wine tastings once it opens. After the store operations settle in, Casaccio said Living Fresh will also offer home delivery. Living Fresh is owned by brothers Dan and Ken Casaccio, third-generation grocers who also own Leamington Foods, a chain of three grocery stores in Hillside and on Chicago’s West Side. Living Fresh is managed by GCC LLC, an entity separate from Leamington, which is managed under Leamington Foods Inc. In March, the Forest Park Village Council voted unanimously to give GCC LLC up to $450,000 to facilitate the leasing, remodeling and operation of Living Fresh in the Forest Park shopping center. The money will come from the Roosevelt Corridor Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district, which stretches from Harlem Avenue to Desplaines Avenue. “I have a vision of what the future of grocery stores will be,” Casaccio said. “More cooking, more prepared meals, salad bars, everything.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

DRESS TO IMPRESS: Proviso East senior spent months designing a gown to honor her Middle Eastern heritage. was 9 years old, meeting many of her extended family for the first time. The trip left her covered in mosquito bites, but astounded by the energetic pace of life. “It’s a beautiful, embracing culture,” she said. “Parties are a big thing in Arabian culture, especially marriage and stuff. We would stay out until five in the morning and the weather would always be beautiful at night.” Samireh, her mom, always made sure El-Barbarawi and her sisters remembered their heritage too, teaching them the Arabic language and telling them stories of her childhood in Palestine. The family also connected with other Middle Eastern families in the Forest Park area. Now, ElBarbarawi said she attends parties of those friends almost every weekend. “They’re all Arabic parties where everybody has good vibes; it’s never negative energy. You’re always happy and having fun, it’s something that brings us all together,” she said. It was at these parties — and family weddings — that ElBarbarawi got ideas for her dress. She reached out to Chicago designer Donyell Wynn in February and the two spent months researching ideas on how to meld Arabic culture and personal preference. Her older sister, Dalal, helped her cover the $1,100 cost of the dress. El-Barbarawi hopes to visit Palestine again after graduating from high school this summer. She said she’s on track to become valedictorian -- following the family tradition of Dalal, who was valedictorian at Proviso East in 2016 -- and is waiting to hear back from the University of Chicago after being put on the college’s waiting list. She’s also secured a spot at Roosevelt University, where Dalal attends school. No matter what, El-Barbarawi plans to major in international relations and journalism. And she also plans on attending Proviso East’s prom next year, this time with her younger sister’s group. “I’m definitely going to wear something different,” she said. “I don’t want to overdo their prom, because it’s going to be my sister’s prom. embers of the Proviso East High School Marching Band swayed, stomped and shouted in the auditorium at FieldStevenson Elementary School on May 7, offering young Forest Parkers a look at what their future could hold if they join the growing high school group. “We actually have a very small number of students from Forest Park, which is a reason we really want to increase our influence,” said Cletis Seals, band director. “Most students who come from Forest Park either come to PMSA [Proviso Math and Science Academy] or they’ll transfer to another school outside the district. So we figure if we show them all the great things we offer at Proviso East, it’ll help them stay within the district.” Dressed in blue shirts that read “Straight Outta Proviso East” and “Proviso East Forever,” the 53 students performed five songs for the packed auditorium. Three colorguard dancers accompanied the show, shaking in white leotards, gold tights and waving their blue flags. Principal Tiffany Brunson asked performers how many were former Field-Stevenson Sharks. Three band students pumped their fists. “We have a lot of children, of course, at Field-Stevenson and D91 who attend Proviso East and PMSA,” Brunson said. “This gives our kids something to look forward to and enhances the partnership with the schools.” Field-Stevenson students can join band once they enter fourth grade, and there are 22 students in the current program, said band director Bob Kelly, adding that participation has grown every year. “It’s good for us to see what the future can hold,” he said of the high school’s performance. Though participation has grown in the Field-Stevenson band, the number of students involved in the Proviso East program has decreased from 65 students at the end of the 2015 school year to the current 53, Seals said, with only four performers from Forest Park. “One reason is the change in leadership,” Seals said. “Whenever you change leadership in a band program a lot of students will prefer the styles of the previous leader, and a lot of the middle-schoolers come in with the preconceived notion you have to come in already knowing how to play an instrument.” Seals took over the program in 2015, after longtime band director Reginald Wright retired. Wright served the Proviso district for 20 years, and even served as Seals’ mentor

During his time at PMSA, Seals participated in the Proviso East Marching Band, and eventually earned a scholarship to South Carolina State University for his trumpet skills. After studying music, he said Wright encouraged him to apply for his soon-to-be vacant position in 2015. “I want to make sure that I give back to my community; this is where I got my roots,” said Seals, of Broadview. “I want to make sure anyone coming after has the same opportunities, if not more, than I had.”

Seals expects marching band students to treat participation in the program like a job, and he makes all his seniors audition for college programs. After Proviso East’s performance, he held a question-and-answer session for young Field-Stevenson students, who asked questions like, “How do you handle the noise?” “How long does it take to learn a song?” and “Do you know my sister Rachel?” Elise Cuenca, 8, said the band’s first song was her favorite because she liked how the

performers danced free-style. “I just want the stage to be a dance floor,” she said, adding that she also appreciated how loud the band was. “The elementary schools are the foundation where a lot of students decide where they’re going to participate in the band program, so performing at these schools gives them an influence,” said Seals, adding: “It helps them, it helps us, it helps build their program. Reordering 209’s board

he District 209 Proviso Township school board chose a new slate of board officers last week and we applaud the outcome. In as president is Ned Wagner, a Forest Park resident, who we see as a steady, progressive influence on this board. Joining him as officers are Sam Valtierrez as vice president and Amanda Grant who moves from VP to secretary. We’d urge this redefined leadership to focus on supporting the efforts of Supt. Jesse Rodriguez. This board wisely chose Rodriguez two years ago to lead a full-scale transformation of th long dysfunctional school district. His efforts to date have been exceptionally focused and strong. Recently, the narrow decision of a board majority to reject a series of vital new administrative hires undermined both solving immediate staffing needs — HR and finance directors — and the superintendent’s long-term standing in the district. This was a full-blown error by a board that has, to date, been outstanding. Moving forward with new leadership, we look for a school board that sets broad policy initiatives but stays away from interference with the rightful prerogatives of a talented superintendent.

Forest Park’s bank

In a Review article today marking the 75th anniversary of Forest Park National Bank, Jerry Vainisi, its longtime chairman, makes this cogent comment: “Show me a vibrant downtown area, and I’ll show you an area of town that has a bank that’s actively involved in the community.” We’d grow that observation beyond just a community’s downtown. Vital communities such as Forest Park benefit enormously, in ways tangible and intangible, from the active presence of a locally owned, locally run community bank. In keeping capital flowing to small businesses for investment, to homeowners for upgrades, to local nonprofits for their critical efforts, banks such as Forest Park National are the lifeblood of growth and identity. Vainisi pointed specifically, in an interview with our Nona Tepper, to the year 1999 when the Main Street Redevelopment Corporation was formed. Backed by the bank, individually by bank officers, by other businesses and by local government leaders, Main Street brought transformational energy to a Madison Street that had lost its purpose and evolved into a rag-tag collection of antique stores, medical offices and tired bars. Without this bank pumping money into remaking old, worn-out buildings, lending to entrepreneurs and cheerleading for Madison Street, Forest Park’s strong comeback would not have happened. Next week, the bank celebrates its history, unveils its new logo and shortened moniker, and announces its preparations for expanded banking technology and added branches. It is a declaration of faith in Forest Park, in the essential role of a community bank, and a recognition of 75 years of proud and committed history.

Weekends are for convention hopping

recently saw a woman walking through LaGuardia Airport wearing a denim jacket covered in patches from something called “PezCon”. I chased after her to make sure I had read them correctly, because I was entranced by the idea that there were enough fans of Pez candy and the dispensers thereof to warrant an annual convention. (I didn’t talk to her, of course. Never ask an enthusiast about their enthusiasms unless they love you enough to keep it short or you love them enough to listen.) A little Googling revealed that not only are there enough Pez enthusiasts to support a convention, there are enough Pez enthusiasts to support several Pez conventions. This, as you might imagine, piqued my interest in the world of highly-specialized hobbyist conventions, and over the last couple of weekends I have managed to attend three without needing to have anything at all to do with LaGuardia Airport. First was a dollhouse miniatures show at a Marriott near O’Hare. It is good that I am accustomed to looking out of place at things. This dollhouse show was low on actual dolls and dollhouses, to my surprise—much more a show selling dollhouse furnishings and furniture and lighting and such. Lot of tiny food, too. Most of the items cost roughly what their real-world analogues would, including one fullyfurnished home listed for considerably over $100,000. While most of the dealers were volume artisans, densely packing their display tables with their cunningly-made wares, there were at least a couple who went the other way. My favorite was a lady from Japan who specialized in dollhouse fishtanks and had evenly spaced three of them on a piece of black velvet, as though you were buying them from Tiffany’s or Harry Winston. (Which in a sense you are—many of the pieces are not unlike jewelry, and I suspect many of the skills are the same. The prices are certainly similar.) Yesterday I went to the Prairie State Cat Show. I had no idea there were so many breeds of cats. Dogs get all the publicity in this arena, for some reason. I paid my $5 and wandered through. It was fine; strongly cat-smelling and filled with people who you would identify as “some-

one who would probably enjoy a cat show” with the naked eye at fifty yards. The only other time I’ve experienced an audience that looked that much like they truly belonged at the event they were attending was when I saw movie-maker Kevin Smith speak. Petting the cats was generally discouraged, a policy I disliked, but the cats were cute and the intraspecies diversity sufficiently striking to pass a pleasant half-hour, even though there were no present Turkish Vans despite the Van being the best kind of cat. The last show was the Chicago Pen Show. This is where I really got in over my head. I’m a free-ballpoint kinda guy, with the occasional exotic foray into a pencil or Sharpie. Most of my pens come from hotels featuring casinos. I was vaguely aware that fancier people than I occasionally own fancier pens, “fancier” in the latter case being a dif different way of saying “more expensive” and I had always assumed that the Waterman or Cross gift pen was a hotel ballpoint in a $100 shell. ($100 being what one might pay for one of these fancy pens.) I had also been under the impression that the fountain pen was a relic of the past, like cars you start by turning a crank. I was very wrong. I realized this when I saw a fountain pen – a new fountain pen, not one used to sign the Emancipation Proclamation or anything – labeled “$1,800.” I was boggled. Inks, nibs, nib grinds, alignment, weight, length, barrel diameter…there are a million options and every Pen Person has strong feelings on every one of them. I have no idea how people maintain so many opinions. These people have impassioned, marriagethreatening debates over the relative merits of shades of blue ink I could not distinguish from one another. I wound up apologetically introducing myself as a “Pentile” (my word, not theirs) when my Penthusiast (ibid.) friend would try to pretend I wasn’t there. I did come home with a mechanical pencil, though. I needed a souvenir, and I found one honoring the 40th anniversary of the Detroit Ball Bearing Company. I’m having a display case built for it, once the insurance kicks in.

A Golden Night Under the Golden Arches Garfield & Grant–White Elementary School in District 91 held their annual McTeacher’s Night on Thursday, May 3rd at the newly remodeled Forest Park McDonald’s on Des Plaines Avenue. A McTeacher’s Night is organized to help raise money for local schools by having teachers and staff work at McDonald’s and then giving a percentage of the night’s sales back to the local school. What a perfect night for a Fundraising event. The Teacher’s and staff were happy to serve freshly prepared meals to students and their families and raise some money for Garfield & Grant-White Elementary Schools. Several teachers and staff worked at the McTeacher’s night, jobs included greeting guests, cleaning the lobby, working the front counter, clearing tables, and making refreshing ice cream treats. A Special thank you goes to Northside PTC member Sue Harvey, who organized the event as well as everyone who volunteered and worked so hard to make this event a suc-

cessful one for Garfield & Grant – White Elementary Schools. Garfield & Grant – White Elementary Schools plan to put the money raised into their general funds account to help pay for things like teacher meals during conferences as well as other needs as they see fit for both schools.
