Four years after administrators at Proviso Township High Schools District 209 required students to wear uniforms of polos and khakis, students are now crying against the monotonous sartorial choices, saying the uniforms contradict the district’s commitment to social justice, equity and are enforced unfairly.

Forest Oaks to offer restaurant, rent-subsidized senior living Village council approves Carefree Development’s plans By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Following approval by the Forest Park Village Council, developer Carefree Development LLC will soon start building senior apartments, a restaurant, healthcare provider and more at 7228 Circle Ave., with development stretching from the longtime home of Kevil’s bar and restaurant to 7234 Circle Ave. Council members approved Carefree’s plan for Forest Oaks Senior Apartments on April 23. Carefree plans to get shovels in the ground by mid-June, and have the project finished by the same time next year. While many senior housing developers are nonprofits, carefree is a for-profit entity. “With the development gone up in Oak Park, and the high-rise going up at Harlem and South Boulevard, this area’s really changing for the positive,” said Phil Moeller, president of Oak Park-based Carefree. “There’s nothing around like it in the entire area; there’s a need for this in the village.” Forest Oaks will consist of five stories of senior housing and accommodations, with commercial offerings on the 4,743-squarefoot ground floor and 56 age- and incomerestricted apartments on the ascending four. The complex will feature one- and twobedroom apartments with in-unit laundry machines and balconies. The majority of two-bedroom units are designed as master suites and come with an adjoining bathroom. Common areas include a lobby, dining room, multiple lounges, library, exercise room and computer lab. The second floor will also have a patio and barbecue center. Occupancy will be restricted to seniors age 55 and older who have an annual income of less than $38,000. Carefree has also submitted

If Carefree’s applications are approved, 15 apartments at Forest Oaks will be priced for seniors at no more than 30 percent of their income. “What we’re fighting is [the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development] has stopped issuing subsidies, but we’ll just hang in there and see what happens,” Moeller said. “Even without the subsidies, our rents are extremely conservative; they’re very low, so most seniors in the village would be able to afford the rent.” Moeller cited U.S. Census Bureau data indicating about 1,000 seniors in Forest Park would be eligible to live in Forest Oaks, where one-bedroom units will cost between $800 and $900 per month and two-bedroom units will cost between $930 and $1,080 monthly. He said Forest Park residents would be given housing priority although he also expects residents from nearby Oak Park and River Forest will be interested in living in the

building too. Interested applicants should contact Carefree at housingseniors.com. Forest Oak’s first floor will feature a restaurant that Moeller described as “quality, but not super expensive” with white linens, a lounge and piano bar and general American cuisine like steak. Next to the restaurant, he said Forest Oaks will house a home healthcare provider likely from the Evergreen Park-based DK Healthcare Services Inc. If there is enough space, Forest Oaks could also feature a retail shop of about 1,500 square feet, but “it’s hard to tell what’s going to happen there because it’s so early,” he said. The development will feature 43 parking spaces, said Steve Glinke, director of the Forest Park Department of Public Health at the village council meeting last week. He said Carefree had also arranged to lease parking in a lot across the street and arranged for residents and visitors to use the parking lot of nearby Circle Bowl after hours. KIWANIS CELEBRATES 95TH ANNIVERSARY The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park started it 95th Anniversary Celebration with a birthday cake at its April 24 Meeting at Francesca Fiore’s. Among those present to cut the cake were club members Jordan Kuehn, Jerry Lordan, Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor Deb Paliferro, and Steve Knysch. The Forest Park Club received its charter from Kiwanis International on April 26, 1923 at a community banquet in the former Roos Building. D91 outlines school security plans

Administration have partnered with police to create emergency plans for buildings, personnel By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

After school shootings in Columbine, Sandy Hook and most recently at Sherman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Forest Park District 91 officials have partnered with police to develop a security plan for schools, which has included tightening up the buildings and practicing safety drills with students and staff. Before a practice drill, D91 notifies parents that “at some time in the near future” there will be a lock down, active shooting or other drill. Schools have social workers to help students and parents deal with the upset emotions that can sometimes accompany such trainings. “After the Parkland shooting, I was overwhelmed with the feeling of disappointment,” said Aaliyah Bailey, a student at Forest Park Middle School. “Later that day I was also angry that this is still happening to people in our world today.” D91 students and staff practice two types of lockdown drills: soft lockdowns and hard lockdowns. Soft lockdowns rehearse what to do if there is something unsafe occurring in the building that is not necessarily an outside threat. Students and teachers practice staying in the classroom, locking doors and not going in the hallways. In a hard lockdown or active shooter drill, kids are taught to move away from windows, move out of sight and stay quiet. Teachers draw the blinds. If told they have to leave the building, students rehearse leaving with their hands on their heads. Mary J. which are rehearsed twice a year, students, teachers and Forest Park police conduct lockdown drills once per quarter. Supt. Louis Cavallo said the goal of the drills is to get students to the point where they successfully complete the drills without thinking, although only he and Forest Park police know the exact details of how the school will react to an active shooter situation because “people jump to conclusions [after an event like the Parkland shooting] and make all kinds of statements without being privy to all of the facts.” He acknowledged that the drills can be frightening for some kids. But “they need to be a bit afraid, so they take they take it seriously if it really happens,” he said. When it comes to the possibility of arming teachers, which President Donald Trump endorsed in a policy speech in early March, Cavallo said he hires teachers based solely on their ability to teach. “I know my staff here and I can’t imagine them using a weapon. Most people who have a firearm at home keep it in

The American Library Association (ALA) recently named Forest Park librarian Amilcar Perez winner of the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) Public Librarian Support Award. Perez, who serves as adult services and outreach librarian and has been at the Forest Park library since February 2016, received the award for his work bringing the business community to the library. He will receive $1,250 for assistance with travel expenses to the ALA Annual Conference in June, where he will help lead a session by the Business Reference in Public Libraries Committee, of which he is a co-chair. Perez said he believes he is the first Forest Park librarian to ever receive the award. “Amilcar has been a firebrand of community and professional development,” according to an ALA release, which noted: “Amilcar has demonstrated an exceptional, never tiring sensitivity and skill in his advocacy at and throughout our library for businesses, current and future business owners, and budding and established entrepreneurs in Forest Park.” The award calls out Perez’s work developing “Explore Forest Park,” a library program that offers tours of local busi-

nesses like, yes, the Forest Park Review. Perez has also launched several workshops that provide support to entrepreneurs, like how to start a business in Illinois or developing a Wordpress website. Perez also partnered the library with organizations like the Small Business Development Center in Forest Park, the Women’s Business Development Center in Chicago and the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce to provide small business owners additional resources. Come fall, he hopes to add programs teaching people how to successfully sell on Amazon.com and how to use social media for marketing. He said he develops program ideas by asking participants what they’re looking for, and uses socioeconomic data from the U.S. Census Bureau to guide what programs might appeal to Forest Parkers. “Libraries are not only repositories of information, libraries are a platform, libraries are enablers,” he said. “What I do, especially in the context of this award, is promote the concept that the library is an enabler. One of the values of the library is the access to information; we want to make sure in the scope of economic development that we can enable entrepreneurs and career seekers access to digital literacy and drive equity in the community.” Originally from Mexico, Perez speaks fluent Spanish, English and French. He worked briefly as a journalist in Mexico City before jetting off to study at McGill University in Montreal. After graduating with a master’s in library and

If we don’t keep the weapon locked away, there will be opportunities for a kid to get it, and that would be disastrous.” During the last six years, security enhancements have also been made on all of the D91 buildings. At Garfield Elementary School, for example, the outside door is looked, and if the school secretary doesn’t recognize entrants on her security video screen, she’ll ask you to identify yourself and state your purpose for entering the school. After getting past the first locked door at Garfield, the only part of the school accessible to visitors is the office, Cavallo said. There is then still a second locked door that visitors have to be given access to, and even then a staff member accompanies them at all times. Steve Rummer, who has a son in kindergarten and a daughter in second grade at Garfield, said that because he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as an embassy security guard he has some experience protecting buildings. “Given a sufficiently determined individual I don’t know how safe [the school] would be,” he said. “I think they’ve done as good a job as anybody could. I’m absolutely comfortable with what they done here and confident in their ability to keep my kids safe.” Cavallo said that he and police tried to strike a balance between safety and maintaining a nurturing environment as they were creating the security plan. “We can lock down the buildings,” he said. “We can put up barbed wire fences with razor wire above that and make the schools look like a jail, but we want our kids to feel like they are in a nurturing place. Striking that balance is not easy.”

In his free time, he volunteered at the Forest Park Public Library and taught workshops on how to download eBooks, as well as how to stay safe and private on the internet. This work led to being hired by the Amilcar Perez Forest Park library to focus on economic development, a role the library hadn’t filled before. He said he finds inspiration when his programs lead to success, whether it’s an attendee finding a job, a small business adding a service, or developing a program that fills a community need. “I love this idea of sharing knowledge or sharing access,” he said, adding: “Not everybody has the same opportunities. Somebody who’s looking for a job might not have a degree or certification, but they have access to the library and that is what makes the library an enabler.”

Cub Scouts from the Forest Park-based Pack 109 celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by picking up litter on Lehmer Avenue from Lathrop Avenue to Veterans Park at Circle Avenue as well as the park itself. Ten Cub Scouts and their siblings joined eight adults in collecting four giant bags of trash in 90 minutes. Ken Snyder of Pack 109, who was along the adults who participated, said the community service project involved Cub Scouts of all ages and was led by the second graders in the Wolf Den, noting that community service is a “big thing” for den members. “They spent a meeting talking about different ideas to help the community and this year the Scouts wanted to do something to beautify Forest Park,” he explained. John

Doss, Public Works director, provided some options and the Cub Scouts voted to do a cleanup, Snyder added. “The village gave us the equipment and the area to clean, which helpfully included Veterans Park on Circle so the boys could have some fun, too,” he added. Snyder said Pack 109 regularly does various service projects including cleanups, food drives and helping to serve or clean up at fundraisers such as the Kiwanis Club Spaghetti Dinner and PTO events. Cub Scouts and their siblings who participated are Braxton Brown; Hollis Cross; Aiden, Bella and Ben Mack; Connor Ng; Jason and Kenny Snyder; and Quinten and Kaleb Thomas. Some called it a “hidden gem in Forest Park” and “the best”, but Forest Park’s Fuji Grill Sushi & More, 315 Harlem Ave., is no more. We tried to get in touch with the owner to find out if the sushi restaurant had moved, perhaps, but Fuji’s phone number is no longer active. The restaurant was last reported open in late February. Its listed website now redirects to chain of restaurants by the same name headquartered in Orange, California. The Fuji folks gave no indication as to what happened on their Facebook page, but the restaurant’s Yelp profile – diners gave it

Woman stabbed three times on Prairie Path As a woman walked on the Prairie Path to Maybrook Courthouse about noon on April 27, a man with a bike approached her and asked if he could use her cellphone. According to a police report, the woman said no and continued walking down 7900 Van Buren St. The man reportedly tried take her phone. The woman resisted and in the ensuing struggle, the man stabbed her three times in the back. He then fled on his bike. When the woman arrived at the courthouse, a police officer saw her injuries and called an ambulance. The woman had a seizure while waiting. She was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center.

Asleep in a stranger’s car On April 27, a man took refuge in someone else’s car after spending all his money on pizza and vodka. The man told police he drank a pint of vodka the night before and spent all of his money on a slice of pizza at Domenzo’s, according to a police report. He reportedly didn’t know how he was going to get home, so about 4 a.m. he decided to sleep on the back porch of a house on the 1000 block of Marengo Avenue, but it was too windy. He walked down Marengo Avenue, and found a parked car with unlocked

doors. He entered and fell asleep until about 6:35 a.m., when he said the sun woke him up. He started searching for his cellphone, which he told police he lost in the car. A man approached who pointed out that he was asleep in his wife’s car, and held him down until police arrived. The man was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle.

Heroin uncovered during traffic stop Police stopped a man for using his cellphone while driving about 3:15 p.m. on April 26. The man pulled into the parking lot at 7709 Roosevelt Road and gave the officer his state ID card, in lieu of a driver’s license. Police found his license had been revoked for a DUI. The officer asked if he had any contraband in the car and the man replied, “What? You want my dealer’s name?” The officer then asked what narcotics he had, and the man said he had about 10 bags of heroin worth a total of $100 near the front seat. He told police he had been clean for about three years but relapsed three months ago, and he bought the drugs in a Jewel parking lot in Oak Park. Police found the heroin and charged him with possession of a controlled substance.

Fixes flat, steals vehicle A man was driving south on Harlem Avenue when his car tire blew out about 4:45 a.m. on April 29. He pulled into a parking lot in the 1200 block of Harlem Ave. to replace the tire with a spare when a man came up to him and offered to help. The man accepted the offer, the two replaced the tire, and then the driver walked to a nearby gas station to buy the man a soda and snacks. On the way, he realized he left his wallet and iPhone 7 in the unlocked car. He returned and found his car, cellphone and wallet gone.

Employee drives off with company trailer On March 23, an employee of Dovgal Express Inc., in Forest Park, left on a shipping run with a company trailer, and eventually drove to Birmingham, Alabama. The company has been trying to get in touch with the employee since, and even sent another employee to retrieve the vehicle in Alabama, but when he arrived in Birmingham, he found the trailer had new locks on it. Birmingham police said they couldn’t do anything about the vehicle because it hadn’t

been reported stolen. A Dovgal employee reported the trailer stolen about 11:47 a.m. on April 27. Another employee was sent to Alabama to again try and retrieve the vehicle.

Man drives off with product crates A man stole several product crates from Thornton’s Gas Station, 601 Harlem Ave., about 1:41 p.m. on April 25. The suspect loaded more than 20 product crates with a total value of more than $500 in his van, then drove south on Harlem Avenue. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, April 23-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Elaine Drittler, 93 Former Forest Park resident Elaine A. (nee Brandt) Drittler, 93, of Pinellas Park, Florida, formerly of Forest Park and Westchester, died on April 20, 2018. Born on Aug. 7, 1924, she was the mother of Carol Duck (Mark Hanson); the grandmother of Robert (Michaela) Duck and Shawn (Lori) Duck; and the great-grandmother of seven. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Drittler; her parents, Erna and Herman J Brandt; and her brother and sister-in-law, Herman E. and Violet (Musser) Brandt. The funeral service was held on April 24 in Florida, with interment on May 1 at Chapel Hills Garden West. Matt Mathey, 69 Vietnam veteran Matt H. Mathey, 69, of Forest Park and formerly of Riverside, died on April 28, 2018. Born on Nov. 7, 1948, he

served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a tile worker for a marble and granite contractor. Matt Mathey was the father of Matt (Lisa), Craig, Dina and Mary (Michael) Arlowski; grandfather of Ashley, Joseph, Colin, Matthew, Grace, Elizabeth, Scarlett, and the late Madeline; great-grandfather of Jesus Jr. and Isaiah; and the brother of Karl. Former Forest Park resident Violet Tellalian (nee Hagopian), 89, of Lombard, a former resident of Forest Park, died on April 26, 2018. Born on June 20, 1928 and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island by her late parents, Deroohe (nee Ohanian) and George Hagopian Sr., with her brothers, Hagop, Avedis and George and her sister, Mary. She met her future husband, Edward Tellalian, while visiting an aunt in Pittsburgh when she was 19 and they married a year later on July 11, 1948. The couple moved to Oak Park for six months and then to Forest Park for nine years. In 1964, they moved to Lombard and Violet spent the rest of her life in that home. She enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle with her friends and working in the garden, especially with her roses. She was known for her friendly and gregarious personality and when she

Village amends zoning code to accommodate Sox boss No more lot area restriction for mixed-use developments By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

To accommodate the development of 7652 Madison Street and similar future projects, the Forest Park Village Council April 23 amended the village zoning code to eliminate the lot area restriction for mixed-use developments. “The comprehensive plan calls for periodic review of our zoning code,” explained Steve Glinke, director of public health and safety. He said village officials encountered the restriction, which dates back to the creation of the Downtown Business District zoning code in 2006, when the Michigan Avenue Real Estate Group requested a zoning variation to construct a four-story mixed use building at 7652 Madison with 100 percent lot coverage. The existing zoning code had limited lot coverage to 80 percent. and buildings at 7228 Madison and 7410 Madison all have 100 percent coverage between their buildings and parking lots. “Staff sees no adverse effect to the longterm improvement and development of downtown business district properties” in making the change, Glinke said in his recommendation. “Specifically staff sees no relationship between mixed use development and all other uses in the downtown business district which otherwise are not hindered by this requirement.” He said the decision to recommend the change was made “after careful consideration.” After approving the amendment, the village council April 23 approved the site plan and zoning variations allowing the Michigan Avenue group to construct a four-story building with 2,933 square feet of ground floor commercial space and three floors of 36 residential units at 7652 Madison, on the lots between Dunkin Donuts and Mugsy’s. The location was previously home to two Irish-themed taverns, Brian Boru’s and Molly Malone’s. Both votes were 4-0. Commissioner Rachell Entler was absent.

After a quick vacation, longtime employee Sally Cody will switch from full-time to parttime employment for the village of Forest Park, easing her way into retirement after nearly 37 years. “I’ve been afforded tremendous intellectual, professional and personal growth and, as I leave, after 36½ years, it will be with a song in my heart,” Cody wrote in an April 29 Facebook post, which garnered more than 120 likes. “I want to publicly say thank you to Mayor Calderone, Tim Gillian, all the commissioners, and all my co-workers, past and present. You will always remain in my heart, but I cannot wait to find out what adventures await me post-retirement.” Cody is a longtime Forest Parker who attended the now-shuttered St. Bernardine’s Elementary School, where after class she would buy candy at the Ferrara Candy store. She studied at Triton College and ultimately earned a degree in business management from Concordia University. Those who know her know her love for the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, and the TV series Downton Abbey. She concluded every work email with a line from the show: “The business

of life is the acquisition of memories.” During her time with the village, it’s safe to say she made many. Cody started working for the village in October 1981 as a communications operator for the police and fire departments; for 18 years she answered non-emergency 911 calls, according to her LinkedIn profile. She then switched to her current fulltime role as executive secretary of the village of Forest Park in September 1999, Sally Cody where she coordinates appointments for Mayor Anthony Calderone, helps set up village fundraisers and much, much more. During her time with the village, she championed such initiatives as the Cover Our Rust program to upgrade the look of the Circle Avenue Bridge in May 2017. Cody and others raised more than $5,000 for the painting project and coordinated nearly 115 artists — young and old — to beautify the bridge with rainbows, hearts, flowers, etc. “It looks beautiful,” she told WGN-TV at the time. The Chicago-based TV crew trav-

eled to the suburbs to record a more than two-minute-long feature on her project. On Cody’s Facebook post announcing her retirement, Village Clerk Vanessa Moritz wished her luck, calling Cody talented and said she always treated everyone with respect. “You will be missed by everyone at work but mostly by the citizens of Forest Park,” Moritz wrote. “Your shoes will be hard to fill.” Commissioner Joe Byrnes joked that Cody would need to return to help him solve computer problems. “I am going to miss your presence,” he wrote. “I probably worked with you longer than anyone else.” For two weeks, Cody will vacation with family and friends in the Pacific Northwest. She will return May 14 to resume her parttime role with the village. Village Administrator Tim Gillian said the village has not started the hiring process yet for her replacement.

ur little-known state song opens an evening of music written by composers with connections to our 200-year-old state, including some with local ties. The Michael Teolis Singers will “Sing Illinois” at its spring concert on Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Oak Park. The group consists of 30 singers who come from Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park and other surrounding areas. Their musical experiences vary — some are former Grant Park Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chorus members, some are from the music education sector, some sing at churches, and others “just love to sing,” according to Nancy Greco, Michael Teolis Singers’ president/manager and a Forest Park resident. “Our ensemble wants to perform a higher quality,” Greco said, “and we do lesserknown works, rarely-heard composers, new works, and things that are not a heavy, standard repertoire.” Artistic Director and Conductor Michael Teolis meticulously researches the composers for each annual spring themed concert. “Sing Illinois” includes music by a Pulitzer Prize winner who grew up in Oak Park and graduated from OPRF 80 years ago, and a female composer who spent most of her years in the village.

It is typically a hole dug into the ground down to the sand layer. Then it is filled with coarse gravel or river rock with a center drain tile to allow the pit to “breathe,” followed by installation of a weed barrier over the gravel, and wrapped up by covering the upper 12 inches of the hole with soil and turf. With established turf, they are invisible (except for the drain cap at the surface). A French drain collects rain water and allows it to percolate to the sand layer and disperse into lower soil profiles. If soils are fully saturated through all layers, some flooding problems may still occur, but they are minor and disperse significantly faster. The bottom (or subterranean) line: French drains are a fantastic way to collect and disperse storm water in relatively large volumes.

Local ministers talk safety as church shootings rise Have an emergency plan, know where building exits are and more By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

As minister of Hope Tabernacle Church in Forest Park, Rev. Persia Allen knows a lot about churches. And after serving 25 years as an officer in the Maywood Police Department, Allen also knows a lot about law enforcement. Allen’s personal and professional interests merged April 21 at the “Guarding the Church and Community Conference,” which he helped organize and hosted at his congregation at 7416 Dixon St. In light of recent shootings at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas and the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Hope Tabernacle’s three-hour conference focused on informing church leaders on how to keep their worshippers safe. “Having a plan in place can save your life and the lives of the people in your church,” Allen told the some 25 attendees. He advised congregations to post “No Gun” decals on their church doors so as to avoid liability for injuries caused by gun violence, even when those acts are committed by a non-church member. Hope Tabernacle will inform its congregation of what to do during an active shooting or robbery on May 20 at 10 a.m. Staff will also educate worshippers on how to evacuate the church, and what to do during an emergency. At least two churches in Forest Park have emergency plans like the one blooming at Hope Tabernacle, although the Forest Park Review is not naming them to protect the safety of all churches. At the conference, Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley of the Maywood Police Dept. stressed the importance of having an emergency plan—not just in the case of an active shooter, but also in repose to a fire or power outage. He urged attendees to create a trained security group in their congregations, and strongly opposed members carrying firearms. “People get a license to carry a gun and think they are a police officer when they don’t have the training,” he said. Dr. Carolyn Ransom-Champion, creator of the Urban First Responders program, urged attendees not to “walk to the other side of the street,” but to engage with victims of gun violence. Urban First Responders trains people how to respond to neighbors and church members who have been victims of violence. Champion lost her son to gun violence. She believes the effects of trauma will inspire victims to commit similar, violent behaviors if not treated, and emphasized that we all have to deal with our own issues before we can hope to help others. Attendee Lorenzo Weber said he felt motivated by the conference to go back to Empowerment Church in Melrose Park and make a security plan and train the staff, “so we never have a situation like in Sutherland at our church.” Dr. C. Eventually, Biosah dreams of competing in the Olympics. “Work hard, play hard, do well in school, I’ll do anything to make it to the Olympics,” he said. Biosah credits his many college offers to his high grades and track performance. Although he’s still undecided about which university he plans to attend, he said he’s looking for a diverse school that allows him to major in nursing. He said his upbringing has prepared him for whatever’s next. Biosah moved to Forest Park when he was 9 -some 6,000 miles from the family’s former home in Nigeria, in Africa. His father had family in town and really liked the neighborhood, thinking it was a good place for his son to grow up. The family made the move and enrolled Biosah in Field-Stevenson Elementary School, where he marveled at how new and exciting American culture — and the weather — felt. “I had never seen snow before and it was so

cold,” Biosah said of his first winter in Forest Park, laughing. “America is full of better opportunities and you can do whatever you want, be whatever you want. If you set your mind right and you work hard you can do really great things over here,” he said. Biosah went on to attend Forest Park Middle School and focused on academics and sports. He played soccer and read for the first time his nowfavorite book, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” He entered Proviso East and joined the track team. He soon started breaking school records for running. Biosah said his favorite race is now the 4-by-400 relay because it’s the last race during track meets and everyone pays attention. “Everybody watches it, and if you run fast you get to show off,” he said. “I really love getting everybody pumped.” He credits his success to his family, school coaches and friends on the team. “They make practice fun, being with my brothers on the track, it makes me want to be the best I can be,” he said. His sister, Sarah Biosah, agreed that when she attends his meets everyone seems to know — and cheer — for her older brother. “I feel happy for him with the things he’s done, it’s inspiring,” she said. “Maybe I can be like that one day.”

Gomez said he and his peers believe that a transition from a uniform requirement to a dress code will prompt deeper dialogues about style standards. Other students complain that uniforms have devolved into a tool to perpetuate “racism, classism and sexism.” During the April 10 Board of Education meeting, the D209 school board seemed to agree. Members unanimously voted to ditch part of a board policy that required students to wear the uniform described in the Student Handbook. If the board approves the 201819 School Handbook, which they will be presented later this year, D209’s new policy on student appearance will still prohibit certain items but mostly require that dress and grooming “not disrupt the educational process, interfere with the maintenance of a positive teaching/learning climate, or compromise reasonable standards of health, safety, and decency.” Short skirts, sagging pants and crop tops will still be prohibited, according to a draft of the proposed policy. Things like flip flops, cleated shoes, hats, shower caps and night caps will be banned too. But it’s a long way from all polos and khakis all the time. “This was not a priority for the board,” said D209 board member Nathan Wagner during the April 10 meeting. “The only reason this happened was

The students said we don’t want uniforms, we want a dress code,” Wagner said. “They weren’t just complaining. They came up with a solution — an excellent solution and they were part of this process.” According to a memo about the policy change drafted by district officials, two groups of students “engaged in study and discussion of the student uniform and dress code issues during the current school year.” Those students included members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board and a group of students from Proviso East who have been studying the uniform and dress code issue under English teacher

The students understood, however, that room for administrative discretion is needed,”

officials said in the memo. “All participants agreed that a key element to successfully achieving compliance would be to teach students about and encourage a standard of ‘dressing for success,’” they added, “rather than focusing solely on what they were not allowed to wear.” The policy change came after mounting student complaints about how staff and faculty at Proviso East, Proviso West and Proviso Math and Science Academy were enforcing the uniform policy and how the policy may run counter to the district’s commitments to equity and social justice. The uniform policy had been designed to combat perceptions of gang-affiliated clothing and colors and to decrease various other distractions related to student appearance. Although the 2014 uniform policy came about after a rigorous, months-long vetting process by a committee that included students from all the Proviso school, and the input of thousands of students and community members through focus groups and an online survey, its undoing was the result of students who, after years of complaining, drafted an alternative dress code policy largely of their own making. At the meeting, board member Rodney Alexander was so impressed by the students’ work that he voted for the policy change even though he supports the uniform policy. “I’m 110 percent uniform but because of the adult-like, board-like work [the students] have done, you have to yield to their expressions and their education process and their ability to communicate and put this argument together,” Alexander said. “They’ve pretty much won the argument.”

orn and raised in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, as a young girl Carmen Rivera told her mother she was either going to live in the Sears Tower or Oak Park when she grew up. The Oak Park side of that dream panned out, and today the busy mother of three loves all that the village and western suburbs have to offer. While the good schools in Oak Park were the initial draw for her when choosing a place to raise her family, this single mother also liked the village’s cultural attractions and urban feel. “Even as a true city girl, the access to everything that I love within the city is right here. The CTA green and blue lines, as well as the Metra rails, are literally walking distance from most places within Oak Park.” Rivera has worked in media for over twenty years and one of her jobs is working as a full-time events coordinator for Wednesday Journal and Chicago Parent. Not content to rest with one job, in 2015, she took a leap of faith and opened Bliss Fashion Lounge Lingerie Boutique in Forest Park. She notes that as a self-funded business she likes being her own boss and has come

to fill a niche in the community. “Not long after my opening and having such a positive reaction from local and city-wide clients for what I was doing at Bliss, women, men, transgender and anyone needing help with their underthings, from all over the area began to recognize me as the ‘Curvologist.’ I had quickly become an expert on curves!” Rivera finds fulfillment in her multiple careers but says that she has her challenging moments. “With my full-time event job in media and my Bliss, some days I just sit on the floor of my kitchen and cry. But that’s ok, we all have our moments, and as a friend recently told me, if it were easy, everyone would do it!” She finds balance through meditation and working out, and reports that Mother’s Day is the one day she lets someone else take over. “It’s the one day a year when I will allow my children to take me to brunch or do something special for me. I also use Mother’s Day to celebrate my mother. My mother is a beautiful and amazing woman. She is where I get my resilience from, for all things tough in life. She’s who I strive to be when I grow up, so I dedicate my Mother’s Day to her.”

Easy Week-Night Chicken Feta Pita

A Mother's day favorite!

very mom has a few tried and true recipes in her week-day rotation. Usually these reliable dinners are fast, easy, and universally loved by her family. Even the most finicky eaters will eat these best loved dishes without complaint making them a joy for Melissa Elsmo/Food Writer mothers to serve as they ensure dinner won’t devolve into a dreaded Food Writer “one more bite” negotiation. These chicken feta pitas have long topped the list of my family’s best loved week-night recipes and my college-aged daughter already makes them on a regular basis for her friends and roommates. Brimming with chicken, fresh veggies, and melty feta cheese, these interactive sandwiches are easily customizable. If your kiddos are not a fan of fire on the palate you can toss chili flakes aside. If roasted red pepper hummus isn’t your thing, feel free to substitute with any flavor your heart desires. Here’s hoping my favorite, fast, family-friendly meal makes it into your regular recipe rotation.

(serves 6-8)

For the Chicken:

■ 3 Tablespoons olive oil (divided) ■ 2 Pounds fresh boneless skinless chicken breast, diced into ½” cubes ■ Kosher salt and coarse black pepper ■ 1 teaspoon dried oregano ■ ¼-½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (more or less to taste) ■ 1 (6-ounce) package crumbled feta with Mediterranean herbs

For Serving:

■ 6 pocketless pitas (gyro style) or multigrain/whole wheat flatbreads ■ 1 (10-ounce) container roasted red pepper hummus (or whatever

flavor

you like best) ■ 2-3 roma or heirloom tomatoes, halved and thinly sliced ■ 1 small English cucumber, halved and thinly sliced ■ 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced ■ Pitted Kalamata Olives

Directions:

Heat 2 Tablespoons of the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot, but not smoking. Add the diced chicken breast to the pan and season with salt and pepper (I usually start with about 1-1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon of coarse black pepper; you can always add a little more later, but feta is salty so be careful). Mix the chicken well and season with the dried oregano and red pepper flakes (if using). Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until chicken is cooked through and most of the liquid in the pan has evaporated-about 10-15 minutes.

Pour the container of feta over the chicken. Remove the pan from the heat and mix the cheese into the chicken until is slightly melted. Transfer the chicken to a serving bowl and set aside. Quickly wash out the pan you cooked the chicken in and return to the stove. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in the pan over high heat until hot, but not smoking. Add a flatbread to the skillet and warm through on both sides. To serve, place a flat bread on a plate and top it with some hummus. Place a the chicken mixture on top of the hummus and garnish with cucumber, tomato, red onion, and Kalamata olives as desired.

Natasha Gittings: Finding Purpose and Community

rowing up in Oak Park, Natasha Gittings says she had amazing women role models. By the age of sixteen, she was already interested in becoming a midwife and took her first class in the subject at age eighteen. She became a doula, and after having her own two children, she went back to school to become a Labor and Delivery nurse. These days, she works night shifts at West Suburban Hospital, and the busy single mother says that her lifetime passion has become a fulfilling career. “If we can support moms and kids, there’s just a better outcome for society as a whole. I love to bring a sense of empowerment to my patients.” Gittings notes she receives a lot of support from her house-mate, who also happens to be her mother. “I couldn’t do this without my mom’s support. I work at night, and to just be able to be there and enjoy every minute of my kids’ growing up when I am home is what I want to do.” Susan Gittings worked in local schools for years and now is a part-time preschool teacher, and her daughter calls her the unofficial grandmother to a lot of

people in their Forest Park community. That sense of community is a large part of what makes Forest Park the perfect home for their family. Natasha says of Forest Park, “You have all these families watching everybody’s kids. It feels like you go back in time a little bit with that sense of community here.” A few years ago, after a tragic loss of a young mother in their community, Gittings and friends formed the Forest Park Mom's Compound. Originally designed as an outpost to bring meals to a family in need, the group evolved to become a community mainstay for many. Gittings calls it a support network for busy families. Whether someone needs help with a carpool or school question, the group is there for both kids and moms. She says of the group’s role in the neighborhood, “You can have a whole team of people there to make everyone’s lives as wonderful as possible.” Gittings always wanted to be a mother and calls her two children the biggest blessings of her life. On Mother’s Day, she looks forward to spending time outside with her family.

Uniform success

t was a different Proviso Township High School system four years ago. That is when a school board and administration, riven by fears of school violence and its inability to fully secure its buildings, turned to uniforms for students. The goal was to smother signs of gang influence and to exert control over the distractions of inappropriate clothing worn by young people fairly desperate to stand out. Uniforms — lots of khaki and polos — were a top-down decision imposed by a failing power structure. And, yes, the Review enthusiastically supported the action at the time. Now things are different, both within District 209 and more generally with our teens. One manifestation of these changes is the near certainty that the district is about to end the uniform requirement as of next fall. In its place will be a “dress for success” model, crafted in recent months largely by students. Our young people will choose their wardrobe based on a new dress code that specifically prohibits the items students agree are inappropriate for a school setting focused on academics. So no saggy pants on the boys. No tube tops for the girls. And skip the flip-flops, night caps and short skirts. The energy for this well organized campaign came from multiple sources, including the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board and a group of Proviso East students studying the subject in an English class. School officials met with students to express their issues related to school safety and climate. The final product was based on the aspiration of “dressing for success” rather than focusing on items that are outlawed. That is always a winning strategy. Good for these students who have done their research, responded to legitimate concerns, and implemented a campaign that has won over both administrators and the school board.

Sally Cody, one of the stalwarts at Forest Park Village Hall, is making her gradual, gracious exit. After 36½ years. Cody, certainly the face of village hall as well as its glue, is stepping down from full-time to part-time status after a family vacation. She spent half her village hall career as a communications operator in the fire and police departments. The other half was spent upstairs working as executive secretary, supporting both Mayor Anthony Calderone and the village administrator. Of recent note, Cody blended her village hall connections with her advocacy of public art to champion the “Cover Our Rust” project which turned dozens of local groups into artists as they remade the rusting concrete façade of the Circle Avenue Bridge over the Ike. In a Facebook post, Cody lauded her colleagues, present and past, but said, “I cannot wait to find out what adventures await me in retirement.” We can’t prognosticate but we can speculate that Cody’s future will involve more projects like the bridge and a very strong focus on bringing out Forest Park’s best.

Pastor Mitty wrestles with the prosperity gospel

astor Walter Mitty didn’t get much sleep last night because he couldn’t make up his mind regarding what to say at the funeral this morning at the Poplar Park Community

Church. On Sunday, Dominique had pulled him aside after worship and said, “Pastor, I have a favor to ask. My Uncle Mallory died on Friday and I’d like to ask you to do the funeral” “Sure, of course,” Mitty replied, “but wasn’t Mallory a member of Rev. Johnny Christian’s church?” “Well, uh, yeah he was. But when I called there about a funeral, the person on the phone told me that one of their assistant pastors would be assigned to do it, and I got the impression that the guy never met my uncle, let alone knew anything about him,” Dominique said. “Rev. Johnny Christian’s church is so huge that Uncle Mallory was anonymous.” “I didn’t know him that well either, Dominique,” Mitty said. “I know, but I feel like you will take the time to listen to his story and make the service more personal,” Dominique replied. “He might have been one out of 20,000 members to Rev. Johnny Christian, but he was family to me.” So Mitty agreed to do the service, and scheduled it for 11 a.m. today. He, Dominique and some of Mallory’s adult children got together on Monday in the church office to fill Mitty in on their father’s life story. Turns out that Mallory and his late wife had worked hard as a janitor and a cook at a public school on the West Side to send their two children to the University of Illinois at Chicago where they could get the education they needed to become successful in the business world. Judith, the oldest child, explained why Mallory kept attending Rev. Johnny Christian’s mega church. “You see,” she began, “although Rev. Johnny Christian’s promises of prosperity never really came true for my dad, somehow that dream kept him going.” “Maybe he felt like our getting an education and making three times as much as he did somehow made the promise credible,” added Reginald, the younger child. “You know what I mean? Like when the Cubs won the World Series, we said WE won, not they won.” After a minute of silence, Dominique said, “I think that’s why in a lot of the black churches I’ve been to the members want their pastor and the first lady to drive a

Cadillac and wear fashionable clothes, even though they pay for their groceries at Aldis with a Link card. It’s like Reggie said, ‘They have a vicarious thing going on.’ When their pastor is successful, so are they.” “I think I get what you’re saying,” said Mitty, “but then why do you want to do the funeral here? I mean, we’re not a big successful church.” What Mitty didn’t tell the family is that he often watched Rev. Johnny Christian on Sunday evenings and did the same thing Uncle Mallory had done. As thousands of people shouted “amen” and “praise the Lord” in response to the charismatic pastor’s preaching, Mitty would fantasize he was up there on the stage with his image projected on the big screens flanking the pulpit. But the reason Mitty couldn’t sleep last night was that he didn’t really buy Rev. Johnny Christian’s theology. He could fantasize that he was a successful preacher, but that was only an escape from the reality that membership at the Poplar Park Community Church wasn’t any bigger than when he became their pastor 20 years ago. So, what was he going to say in his sermon this morning? Mitty understood how Johnny Christian’s narrative worked in a way for Uncle Mallory, but he himself couldn’t authentically buy into that vision, let alone preach it at the funeral. What’s more, he couldn’t find anywhere in the Gospels where Jesus promoted that kind of view of the world. Rev. Johnny Christian was very skilled at cherry picking verses that supported his theology, yet part of Mitty wanted what he was preaching to be his reality. That’s what often happened inside the pastor of the Poplar Park Community Church. He would encounter situations that revealed to him how divided he was inside. He found himself believing two opposite things, like worshipping two different gods, and unable to choose one over the other. One reason he couldn’t fall asleep was because the words to a song by the Lovin’ Spoonful he listened to on the car radio years ago kept running through his head: ■ Did you every have to make up your mind? ■ Pick up on one and leave the other behind, ■ It’s not often easy, and not often kind. ■ Did you ever have to make up your mind? Or, was that framing the issue in the wrong way? Was it maybe not either/or but somehow both/and?
