District 209 superintendent ‘at a crossroads’

Rodriguez puzzled after board votes against personnel changes By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

Proviso Township High School District 209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said in a recent interview that he’s currently “at a crossroads” after the school board voted earlier this month against a series of hires and promotions that he had recommended. The personnel changes, he said, were critical to his vision of “transformational change” in the district and are a basic function of his office. The experience, the superintendent said, has left him somewhat disoriented and even to the point where he’s questioning his commitment to the kind of transformational change he had promised when he was first hired two years ago. “Everyone wants change, but when it is time for change to

isitors flock to the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument, but there’s a slight problem: no place to sit. So Ted and Kathy Pearson have commissioned a bench, where visitors can sit and gaze at the monument. The dark granite bench will face the monument from across the cemetery road. The back of the bench is inscribed with these words, “Sit and Hear the Voices for Peace, Justice and Freedom.” Ted and Kathy have been fighting for these causes their entire lives. They also have a longtime tradition of making pilgrimages to Forest Home Cemetery to place red carnations on the monument and the graves of other radicals. They began this May Day tradition after the birth of their first son in 1966. When their second son was born, he was also brought to this historic place to honor the graves of progressives. For Ted, the progressive movement is part of his DNA. His mother, Beatrice, was a civil rights leader in Louisville, Kentucky. Authorities accused her of being a communist. Fearing an indictment and possible imprisonment, Beatrice and her family fled to Chicago. Ted arrived in the South Chicago neighborhood in 1954. He graduated from the University of Chicago High School and en-

rolled in the university. He earned a physics degree but, more importantly, met Kathy, a math major who got in on the ground floor of computer programming. Ted went to work for the movement right after graduation. He was already a member of the Communist Party and became a reporter for a communist newspaper, then went on to become a full-time organizer, while holding a part-time job at the radical Modern Bookstore in Chicago. Meanwhile, Kathy enjoyed a successful career working on information systems. She retired from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Ted shows no signs of retiring. He works for the Chicago Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression, founded in 1973. The organization’s current cause is exonerating wrongfully accused criminals, focusing on inmates who were tortured into giving confessions. The organization’s first chairperson, Angela Davis, is coming to Chicago for a rally to call attention to wrongful convictions. Mark Rogovin. Ted met Mark in the ’70s when Mark was a muralist at the Public Art Workshop in Chicago. Ted knows “everyone in the movement because, unfortunately, there is only a small number of people involved.” Mark directed him to the Peter Troost Monument Co. for the cemetery bench. Ted and Kathy got the idea for the bench, when they were strolling through Vander Veer Botanical Park, in Davenport, Iowa. They were struck by the benches donated by local residents and thought a bench would be a welcome gift for visitors to Radical Row. Chris Lee, an artist and designer for Troost, found the bench in the company’s catalogue. It is “Galaxy Black,” containing pieces of quartz that give it a subtle sparkle. Troost was hoping to install the bench in time for the April 29 celebration at the cemetery. But April’s freakish cold caused a setback in laying the foundation. They’re hoping to install it sometime in May. Ted and Kathy don’t want any fanfare. They just want to give visitors a quiet place to rest. If those visitors want to learn more about the monument, the bench will feature a weatherproof box containing fliers for Mark’s book, The Day Will Come: Honoring Our Working Class Heroes. So the next time you visit Radical Row, you can thank Ted and Kathy for taking a load off your feet.

New police officer sworn in Officer Daysi Riglos holds an associates degree and is fluent in Spanish By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

When Daysi Riglos was sworn in as the Forest Park Police Department’s newest of officer, she became the third woman to join the department in the past year. Of the 38 members of the department, including Chief Tom Aftanas, there now are five female officers, including Laura O’Donnell, who joined the department in August, and Justine Constantino, who joined in December. Riglos, 27, was sworn in during Monday’s village council meeting by Mayor Anthony Calderone. A member of the Illinois Army National

Guard for six years, she lives in Franklin Park with her husband and twin daughters. She earned an associate in liberal arts degree from Wright College. “I’ve always been interested in enforcing the law,” she said. “It’s been a passion for me. That’s why I joined the military.” The native of Ecuador, who is fluent in Spanish, said she waited until she had received her degree before taking the eligibility test. She said the Forest Park test was the first she took. “It’s worked out well,” she added. Riglos will start the Chicago Police Training Academy May 7. New massage studio opens on Madison Street Owner calls business ‘an immigrant dream come true’ By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

After 20 years, Lei Jin has returned to Forest Park, opening a new massage studio, Soleful Massage, 7616 Madison St., on April 10. “It’s an immigrant dream come true,” said Jenny Jin, sister of the owner, Lei Jin. Because Lei Jin does not feel comfortable speaking English, Jenny Jin told the Forest Park Review a little more about Soleful Massage. Jenny said Lei arrived in the U.S. in 1998, trading his hometown of Qingdao, China, for Oak Park because his then-wife was pregnant with a baby girl. The two already had a son and, because China had a policy at the time that limited households to one child per couple, the two would have had to abort the baby. Lei was an electrical engineer, who owned a business producing microchips in northern China. The two sold the business, fled China and sought refuge in Jenny’s house in Oak Park, with just three suitcases holding everything they owned. Jenny moved to the U.S. in 1993 for school and moved to the Chicagoland area after graduating, attracted by the diverse, big city life. She is a realtor and certified public accountant.

WELCOME: Lei Jin celebrates the opening of his new massage studio on Madison Street. Lei and then-wife, Xiaoling Zhang, had daughter that year, born a U.S. citizen. They named her Alice. When Lei arrived to America he delivered food and attended a Chinese church service in Oak Park. One day, the church roof started leaking, and the pastor complained about

how expensive American contractors were. Lei offered to repair the roof. The pastor gave him the job, the roof never leaked again and Lei started doing small construction jobs around town. At that time, Jenny said Forest Park was doing a major renovation of its downtown area.

“When we came the street was being torn upside down, but we saw the opportunity,” Jenny said. Lei bought the mixed-use residential building at 7616 Madison St. in 2000, renovated it and raised his family upstairs. As the young couple established themselves in America, Lei worked to get his electrician license – eventually becoming a specialized electrician with the city of Chicago and starting his own construction firm, Jin’s Electric Company. The two became acquainted with their new home, and Lei marveled at how different the healthcare systems were between the U.S. and China. Lei’s mother was a doctor, and his former wife was a radiologist. “If you combined all the nations, the whole universe, you would not spend as much on healthcare as we spend in America,” Jenny said. Lei believed that Americans would be healthier if they focused on preventing diseases, and that massages were one way to do that. He became a certified masseuse and, along with his construction business, opened a massage business in Buffalo Grove. The new massage studio in Forest Park represents his second venture. “His goal is to put a doctor out of business,” Jenny joked. “He wants to make a difference one person at a time. We have a saying in Chinese, ‘Food is medicine.’ Eat right and take care of yourself, it’s all about prevention.” Soleful Massage is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers foot massages, traditional Chinese massages and more. Massages run from $30 to $120, depending on the service.

D91 rethinks middle school curriculum and schedule Changes include Spanish and longer class periods By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Spanish language lessons for all. Physical education for all. Algebra I for some, but limited just for now. These are just a few proposed changes to the Forest Park Middle School (FPMS) schedule and curriculum unveiled at a school board meeting on April 12. District 91 Superintendent Louis Cavallo said changes in state regulations and added flexibility allowed by recent departures of some veteran teachers allowed the district to update the school’s plan. Highlights of the proposed new schedule, which Cavallo noted will eventually be presented to all current FPMS students, parents and fifth-graders set to enter the school next year, include: longer, 58-minute lesson blocks for teaching math and other core subjects like social studies, science and English Language Arts; more coding and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) content during iDiscover; Spanish-language class five days a week for all seventh-and eighth-grade students; and an exploratory

class for sixth-grade students will be extended to a semester-length, rather than a trimester. Sixth graders’ new exploratory class options will include iDiscover, music, band, physical education, art or Spanish-language. Next school year, 25 percent of eighth-graders will also be admitted into Algebra I, an advanced math class. Teachers and school staff will choose students to enter Algebra I based on their scores from the state Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam and the district’s FastBridge tests. Cavallo said the district aims to eventually enroll all eighth-graders in Algebra I. “When Common Core was first implemented we changed our schedule,” Cavallo said. “At that point the directive was, we aren’t going to be tracking and only ensure that a small percentage of our kids are on track for success in Common Core and high school. We want to raise the bar for all. So we did away with tracking. But I’ll be the first to admit that didn’t work very well.” To accommodate the longer class periods, lunches will be shortened to 20 minutes. Bells will also disappear from the middle school so that classes aren’t constantly being interrupted, Cavallo said. Middle-school students will also not have more than two academic classes in a row, and daily physical education and recess will be offered to all students. “Early adolescents are very social animals, if you don’t

provide the time for them to be social, they will find the time,” Cavallo said. Cavallo said he planned to ask board members for approval to hire an additional Spanish teacher and math coach for the middle school, as well as new materials for Algebra I at the May 10 board meeting. He noted the middle school is the only school in the district without a math coach to offer classroom support and training for teachers. “We had two teachers that we lost this year that we did not replace and we would like to replace those two teachers,” Cavallo said, adding: “This is a net zero proposition.” He said this was the third iteration of the proposed schedule, and all middle school teachers discussed the changes over many meetings for several months. Parent Rina Petersen said she is thrilled about the changes proposed — particularly longer periods for studying math and the addition of Spanish — and added that this is the first major, positive change she’s seen in the time her sixth-grade daughter Ella has been in the district. “I think it is good that parents and the administration are now on the same page, that we are aware that we did poorly on math [in PARCC],” Petersen said. “By acknowledging the issue, we can find a solution and plan to fix it.”

SLIME STARS: Sarah Biosah, Tamaya Goggins and Daniel Contreras made more than 480 ounces of slime to benefit clean water in Kenya.

7th-grader recognized for volunteerism at annual We Day By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

For a little over two weeks Daniel Contreras, aka “King of Slime,” dedicated his mornings, evenings and lunches to making slime. But not just any slime — “not that nasty, old stuff,” Contreras said. This was specially ordered slime, with scents, colors and textures customized to customers’ orders. Slime is a popular squishy “toy product” first introduced by Mattel that some now make at home. Joined by slime queens Tamaya Goggins and Sarah Biosah, the seventh-grade trio processed more than 80 requests for the glossy substance these last few weeks — selling each 6-ounce container for $5 — and raised more than $400 to benefit LifeStraw, a nonprofit that creates clean water filters for schools in Kenya. After a school year spent organizing, and a frantic two weeks spent mixing glue, borax and water, the group will celebrate at the AllState Arena in Rosemont on April 25, aka “We Day,” a nonprofit that promotes youth volunteerism. Led by Daniel Staser, a teacher at Forest Park Middle School, the trio will join about 70 other classmates, the most of any school in the state, he said. “You can’t buy a ticket; you have to earn a ticket. You have to do something local and then something global,” Staser said. “Most schools only earn 20 tickets; we got for our group like 70 tickets. We get to take a lot of kids here to this.” District 91 students will take the Blue

Line to Rosemont, and then catch a bus to AllState Arena. Once they arrive, they will get to see a star-studded lineup, play games, and might even be on TV. Students are particularly excited about seeing Skai Jackson, an actress on the Disney Channel. While D91 students raised more than $800 for We Day by holding a pancake breakfast and a dodgeball tournament, selling slime was the most memorable — and potentially most profitable. We Day organizers will honor “Slime King” Contreras at the event in a special, secret way since he led the slime effort. The Kenyan Boys Choir will also perform at D91 on April 27 because of the students’ hard work. “Daniel’s slime is amazing; it’s one of the best slimes I ever had,” said Biosah. “It’s like real quality, like if you were going to a store. Some people might mess it up, but Daniel makes sure his slime is good before he gives it out to people.” Although cloud slime was the most popular among D91 students, Contreras, 13, said he prefers to make butter slime “because it does everything. It stretches, it spreads, it pokes, it’s got gloss, all that, the whole shebang,” he said. He taught himself to make different kinds of slime by watching YouTube videos. After mixing more than 480 ounces of glue, water, food coloring and more, these past few weeks, he said, “I always knew it was good to help give back to community, but I learned it actually feels good to do, too.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

A brief history of the Forest Park Historical Society

F

orest Park has a fascinating history, going back to 1856, but it wasn’t until 1975 that anyone thought we needed a Historical Society to share it. Dr. Frank Orland — a respected dentist, teacher and researcher — was a visionary who loved his hometown. “Everybody has a story,” he was fond of saying, and he made it his mission to give these stories the attention they deserve. As the first president of the society, Dr. Orland put together a board of directors, organized tours of Forest Home Cemetery and displayed found artifacts in the library, despite a budget, membership, and permanent home that left much to be desired. Dr. Orland died in 2000, and it took a long time for the society to recover. His successor, Rich Vitton, moved the society’s collection to his basement. Vitton graciously spent his own money to keep the collection safe, but he lacked the resources to ensure it was seen. Eventually citizens went to Mayor Anthony Calderone, asking for help to make

the Historical Society more accessible. With the Mayor’s encouragement, a new board was created under the leadership of President Augie Aleksy. The board hired Diane Hansen Grah as its first director and came up with innovative ideas for fundraising, like the creating the Des Plaines River Anthology book and the board game Forest Park-opoly. The society secured temporary space in Saint Peter’s Church, and when the church sold, the society moved to a building partially utilized by the police department on the corner of Adams and Desplaines. Village Administrator Tim Gillian generously chipped in to rehab the space. But it was not handicap-accessible, and not suitable for purposes beyond storage and office space. Bob Cox briefly took over the reins from President Aleksy. His devotion to the Historical Society was unquestionable, but his vision contrasted with the veteran members’ vision. Jerry Lordan, a former principal at St. Bernardine’s, took over for Bob Cox. With a new board in place, Jerry continued to

extend the society’s reach into the community, including a display of the society’s treasures in Forest Park Village Hall. “We study the past,” Jerry constantly reminds us, “so we can understand our present, so we can shape our future.” Our current leadership consists of President Theresa Steinbach and Executive Director Alexis Ellers. Terry’s lifelong commitment to Forest Park, and Alexis’ abilities as a researcher and archivist bode well for the society’s future. A historical society can never be all things to all people, but it can serve everybody. Ultimately, the success of the society is up to you. We need you to share your memories and mementos and input and ideas. The society also needs members, volunteers and, yes, your generosity. Please contact us to share whatever you can. We promise to share our history with you in return — to bring you fun events, good memories and as many of your stories as we can gather. With this in mind, I’m thrilled that the village of Forest Park is reaching out to local businesses, informing them of the 48-inch clearance standard, which is in line with the Illinois Americans with Disabilities Act guideline. Summer may finally be on its way to Forest Park ... maybe. Whenever summer may arrive, to take advantage of the warm sun and gentle breezes of the season, many of us get a drink or have a meal in the outdoor seating area of our favorite neighborhood restaurant. Unfortunately, when the spacing of the furniture doesn’t allow for a clear path, outdoor seating creates a nightmare for people with disabilities. The inaccessibility prevents us from passing in order to get to work, let alone stop for a beer.

Walgreens manager thwarts elder scam

A store manager recently prevented a $1,500 scam. A man received a call from someone pretending to be his grandson on April 18, saying he had been in an accident and that he needed $1,500 to stay out of jail, according to a police report. Another man posing as the grandson’s lawyer then got on the phone, and said he owed $1,500 in legal fees but only accepted Google gift cards. The man told the two his wife was on his way to Walgreens, 7200 Roosevelt Road, and would buy the gift cards there. The woman attempted to buy three, $500 Google gift cards. The store manager asked why the woman was buying so many gift cards and, when she heard the answer, told the woman this was a classic scam and warned her not to fall for it.

Man walks off with a new pair of Jordans A man stole a pair of shoes delivered to 1128 Desplaines Ave. on April 15, according to a police report. A woman had ordered her son a $166 pair Nike Jordan sneakers on eBay.com. The boy tracked the package, and saw they were delivered by the United Parcel Service on April 15. But when he went to the mail room to retrieve the shoes, the package was gone. Building surveillance footage shows a man walking into the mail room about 12:10 p.m., putting the shoes in a black garbage bag and then fleeing on foot down Roosevelt Road.

Man refuses to leave staffing agency Police arrived about 10:26 a.m. at REM Employment Agency, 7239 Roosevelt Road, on April 20, responding to a call about an upset employee who refused to leave. The store manager told police a day laborer was standing at the counter, yelling about a dispute in his check amount and riling up other employees. The manager said he explained the pay discrepancies and store gift card policies to the man several times, but that he refused to leave. Police asked the man several times what his problem was, but he was unwilling to cooperate and continued to make a disturbance. An officer asked the man to leave, but he refused and got down on the floor.

Tip hotline Anyone with information regarding the cases mentioned in this report, or on another matter, is encouraged to contact the Forest Park police department’s hotline at 708-615-6239. Information may be left anonymously.

Eventually officers removed him to the Forest Park Police Department. At the station, the man apologized and said, “I acted like an ass” and “I’m homeless and just living check to check.” He was charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Police uncover gun in traffic stop Police observed a driver skipping a stop sign on April 21, and stopped the vehicle about 1:49 a.m. on the 600 block of Hannah Avenue, according to the police report. When the officer approached the driver, he smelled a strong scent of marijuana and the man told him his license was “tied up in courts.” He handed the officer a state ID. Police ran the man’s name through the system and found no valid Illinois driver’s license. Officers searched the driver and passenger and found a small bag of what appeared to be marijuana on the passenger. Police then searched the car and found an open bottle of Remy Martin Cognac in the back seat, three other small bags of cannabis, and a black semi-automatic pistol in a pillowcase behind the driver’s seat. When the officer found the gun he immediately asked for the two to be handcuffed, but the driver fled north down Hannah Avenue. The passenger was handcuffed, and additional officers eventually caught the driver. Police also conducted a second check of the vehicle, discovering another bag of cannabis and a bag of cocaine. The driver was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and the passenger was issued a local ordinance violation for possession of cannabis and disorderly conduct for open alcohol.

Parking in the street with no license Officers arrived about 8:50 p.m. at Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave., on April 21, and found a car straddled between the gas station and the road, blocking traffic. When police approached the vehicle, a man immediately jumped inside and backed the car into the parking lot at a gas pump, according to a police report. The man said he must have left the Nissan in drive at the pump and handed police a state ID card. Police ran his name through the system and found his license has been suspended since 2010 for a DUI. Police seized the man’s vehicle and cited him for improper parking on a roadway and driving while his license was suspended. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, April 15-22, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

The Haymarket Martyrs memorial in Forest Home Cemetery gets a lot of attention each year on May 1.

On May Day, this is the center of labor movement history Meet you at the Haymarket Memorial By JOHN RICE Contributing Reporter

Forest Park is fortunate to be ground zero for celebrating the labor movement and observing May Day. That’s because Forest Home Cemetery contains the graves of such luminaries as Albert Parsons, Emma Goldman and Ben Reitman. These residents of Radical Row and the Haymarket Martyrs Monument (HMM) form the centerpiece of the Forest Park Historical Society’s May Day celebration this Sunday, April 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Howard Mohr Community Center. The festivities will feature Revolution and Kinslagher craft beers, a buffet of German food, as well as vegan offerings. The two guest speakers will be local historian Ken Knack and Peter Cole, an authority on the Industrial Workers of the World, aka “Wobblies.” The celebration also includes the musical stylings of Al Scorch and Jon Langford, artists for Chicago-based Bloodshot Records.

In addition, there will entertainment at the cemetery. A Fenwick High School bus will shuttle guests from the Community Center to the HMM. There will be a tent where speakers from the Historical Society will regale guests with the history of the labor movement’s most sacred ground. The society is also sponsoring tours on April 28 and 29 and on May Day itself, starting at 11 a.m. The purpose of all these activities is to raise funds for, and increase membership in, the Historical Society. Last year, they held the event at McGaffer’s and filled the venue. So they decided to move it to the Community Center to accommodate more guests. Admission for the April 29 event is $15, but guests can get a $3 discount by becoming members of the society. The event is intended for people of all ages to learn about the origins of May Day and also why Forest Park is the place to be for honoring the men and women who brought us the eight-hour workday and weekends off.

Takara moving to Forest Park Owner says she’s excited to join Madison Street business district By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Takara Beathea-Gudell will be moving her Oak Park-based clothing and accessories store to Forest Park in mid-June, a move inspired, in part, by her desire to find better dance partners. “I’m happy to be part of a business district again. I think, for me, I’m more of a high-end fashion designer and I’m like an island over here” in the Oak Park Arts District, she said. “I’m not really dancing with anyone, so I need to partner with businesses that are right at my price point. I just think it makes a better shopping experience.” The Takara store will open in the 800-square-foot space at 7502 Madison St., immediately adjacent to Madison Street Shoes and near MacDaddy Salon. Originally from the St. Croix Virgin Islands, Beathea-Gudell started her career as a 19-year-old accessory designer in California, where she would buy large quantities of shells, sit on her porch in Pasadena and string them into earrings. She then sold them to passersby on the beach. Her

seashell earrings took off, area boutiques started stocking them and eventually Beathea-Gudell built a solid career as an accessory designer for such big-name department stores as Nordstrom, Joseph Magnin, Sears and more. As Beathea- Gudell aged, her interest in fashion evolved into clothing, and she opened an Oak Park boutique in 1999, currently located at 140 Harrison St. “Takara was looking to expand her Harrison Street store and looked at multiple locations in Oak Park and, quite candidly, what she was looking for, what her requirement was in terms of size, condition of space, and location did not exist in Oak Park,” said David King, owner of the Oak Park-based David King & Associates real estate company and a Forest Park resident who represented Takara in the transaction. “She will make a fabulous addition to Madison Street.” Beathea-Gudell said she designs most of the pieces herself, and said she’s now known for her playful use of fabrics like mesh, Neoprene, fleece and more. Her contour collection is currently made of recycled water bottles.

ON THE MOVE: Signage for Takara hangs over the sidewalk on Harrison Street in Oak Park’s Arts District. “But now that we’re going into the spring, I like to use metallic linens and gauze and cottons, I try to stick to a lot of natural fibers,” she said. Her Forest Park store opening will coincide with the introduction of her new clothing line, which will feature a “crinkle collection” of intentionally wrinkled clothes in new designs and shapes. Clothes run from extra-small to extra-extra-large sizes. Beathea-Gudell is also known for designing individual pieces for customers with specific needs, like breast cancer survivors. At

her new store, she will also launch a line of body care products, a new Takara fragrance, designer glasses frames and a “cute little Takara shoe that’s like a ballet slipper but really fabulous,” she said. Beathea-Gudell is currently interviewing for a manager at the new store. Interested applicants should email shoptakara@gmail. com for more information. “Opening stores is like a puzzle to me, I just love to put all the pieces together,” she said. DEVELOPMENT

Construction starts soon from page 1 developments. Commissioner Rachell Entler was absent. Consideration of the project at 7652 Madison by the Northbrook-based Madison Avenue Real Estate Group, which is managed by Chicago White Sox and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and his longtime business partner Robert Judelson, generated the interest of two groups attending Monday’s meeting. One group of construction union supporters, three of whom spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, were concerned with safety procedures involving the Madison Group and one of its preferred contractors, Vivify Construction. They also advocated hiring union members and Forest Park residents for the projects. Another group of neighbors expressed concerns about parking and the alley behind 7652 Madison although none of them addressed the council during the public comment portion, apparently because they were unaware of the requirement to register before the meeting to be allowed the opportunity to address the council. Forest Park resident Bridget Lane also raised concerns about the design of the proposed building, saying it is “not a good fit.” Lane, who serves as economic development consultant to the village through her employer, Business Districts Inc. of Evanston, was speaking as a resident. She specifically objected to the 15-foot height of the proposed building’s first floor, contending that other similar mixed-use developments nearby have 10-foot-high first floors. “It needs to enhance the environment,” Lane said. “It

seems like an easy fix.” Prior to casting his vote, Commissioner Tom Mannix said he hoped village staff would consider Lane’s suggestions. He also said he hoped the developer would hire “good union guys who live in town” but noted the village cannot enforce such requirements since Forest Park is not a home-rule municipality. Steve Glinke, director of public health and safety, said it is unusual for three projects to be considered at the same time. “We tried to line all three projects up so the village council, zoning board and planning commission could address all three at once,” he explained. “All three were thoughtfully considered and passed muster. “We’re really excited. This is good, solid development and it’s good for the village.” Glinke said he anticipates demolition work to start on the mixed-use developments 4-6 weeks after developers close on their purchases. Work on the retail strip center is expected to start sooner. Calderone said he expects work on the mixed-use developments to be complete in less than a year, sooner for the retail strip center. Owner Jay Javors proposes building a 5,800-square-foot re-

Playdate Spring

tail strip center with off-street parking on the 20,968-squarefoot vacant lot at 7201 Madison, which Glinke estimates has been vacant for at least 10 years. Village Administrator Tim Gillian said the developer is unsure at this point what exactly will be there and how many storefronts will be included. At 7228 Circle, Carefree Development LLC proposes constructing Forest Oaks Senior Apartments, a building with 4,743 square feet of ground floor commercial space and four floors of 56 age-restricted residential units. The variation reduces the number of required parking spaces from 112 to 43, but Glinke said the senior citizens expected to reside there are less likely to own cars. He also noted the developer has arranged to lease parking in a lot across the street and arranged for residents and visitors to use the parking lot of nearby Circle Bowl after hours. The Michigan Avenue group proposes constructing a four-story building with 2,933 square feet of ground floor commercial space and three floors of 36 residential units at 7652 Madison, on the lots between Dunkin Donuts and Mugsy’s. Balconies will accompany apartments, and bike racks will be incorporated into the final design. Forty enclosed parking spaces will also be featured on the ground floor.

Carlos Craveiro Forest Park resident Carlos Craveiro, a resident of Forest Park, died on April 18, 2018 at Stroger Hospital surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Carol; and his children, Christopher, Rachel, Jonathan and his wife Jackie, Jason and Carlos Jr. A memorial service will be held on April 27 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Memorial Church, 931 Lake St. in Oak Park, with interment at Concordia Cemetery of Forest Park.

Thaddeus Kwiatkowski, 66 A passion for computers Thaddeus “Ted” Kwiatkowski, 66, of Forest Park, died on April 19, 2018 with his family by his side. Although he earned a great deal of experience as a supervisor working for the Illinois Tollway Authority, WaterSaver Faucet Company, and the Chicago Embroidery Company, he ended his career fulfilling his passion new department, which Moreno would head. The department, which would include Daniels — whose job reclassification entailed a pay raise from $50,000 a year to $55,000 a year — would be responsible for creating an online “teacher learning community” that would facilitate better communication between teachers and families, Rodriguez said. The new department, he added, would have come ahead of the district rolling out a new and improved website. He said the new department would include additional English-Spanish translators to help translate numerous district communication material that goes out to families, much of which is still in English despite the district’s student population being over 50 percent Hispanic. Rodriguez said the additional translators would help alleviate some of the low-level clerical work that he currently finds himself doing — namely translating documents. Beyond the issue of hiring, some union and board members said on April 10 that the personnel changes seemed to prioritize administrative salaries over financial prudence. Board member Della Patterson argued that a claim made by some board members in support of Rodriguez’s personnel recommendations — that the superintendent was proposing to spend $60,000 less on administrative salaries this upcoming fiscal year than what was actually spent last year — was not valid, since the cost-saving was made possible by cutting a history department chair. Patterson also said she was confused that the district “all of a sudden” has money to pay for higher administrative salaries, when she was told there was no money to implement an eight-period day, a recommendation she

for computers by providing IT support for the Sara Lee Corporation. Known for his wide knowledge, quick wit, dry humor and quirky imagination, he was also appreciated for his extreme generosity and hospitality. However, his greatest love was his family and his desire was to be with them always. Ted Kwiatkowski was the husband of Rose Helen (nee Sobala); the father of Brandy Seale and Valerie (Kenneth) Carlisle; and the brother of Mike Kwiatkowski. Services were held privately. The family appreciates memorials in Ted’s name, made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements were handled by Zimmerman-Harnett Funeral Home.

had made some time ago. Rodriguez said the $102,000 district department chair position Patterson had referenced on April 10 was indeed cut, but that it was not at the expense of instructional quality. He said that, prior to his tenure, there were three district chairs — one for social studies, one for technical education and one for guidance. That model, he said, had not worked for his predecessor and he found it did not work for him, either. “Instead, we’ll have department chairs at Proviso East and West, so the teachers will do it at the building level. The service will continue to be provided,” he said, adding that those building department chairs now receive stipends — a change that the board had already approved. Addressing the eight-period day, Rodriguez said he had already discussed with the board that the cost of implementing that instructional change would be more than $2.4 million. Rodriguez said he was particularly bewildered by some board members’ input and their votes because he had already explained to them his plans for the central office changes prior to the vote on April 10. And, like the department chair, many of those plans the board had signed off on. “I still don’t have a decision about where to go with this,” he said of the board’s vote against his personnel decisions. “I am very confident about the process we followed. I have to do my work based on evidence and data. Going forward, I either have to bring another candidate forward or start the process all over again. That will create a delay in our work.” CONTACT: michael@oakpark.com

Remaking middle school Creating an empowering myth for Forest Park

T

here are many things to admire in the new scheduling and curriculum plan being rolled out at the middle school in Forest Park. Longer class periods in core subjects such as math and language arts, adding more STEM-focused curriculum, adding Spanish to five days per week for all seventh- and eighth-graders — all positive innovations and refinements. We have some worry over a return to academic tracking for the worthy purpose of bringing Algebra I into the mix for eighth-graders. The plan announced at the last school board meeting by Supt. Louis Cavallo promises that tracking — choosing the top 25 percent of students for advanced math — will be a transition until all eighthgraders are gradually included. We are not fans of academic tracking, not because we oppose academic rigor but because we fret that students with less innate math proficiency will be left further behind. That said, we understand the decision and trust that it will be temporary. Our District 91 public schools face many challenges. But we continue to admire the district for its bold initiatives to face up to those challenges.

Development trifecta This is a season for development in Forest Park. And as the long, steady national economic recovery moves toward late middle age, we say go for the gusto, Forest Park. This week the village council signed off on three notable projects. Each has been vetted by the village’s zoning and planning commissions and all have been reported on in the Review in recent months. Construction should be just ahead. As we’ve noted on this page, the plan to build an upscale apartment project on the current Madison Street site of the old Molly Malone’s is a home run. These are high-end units by a top developer that will match up with the coming upgrades of River Forest’s side of the same street. And while we all pine for the glory days of Kevil’s restaurant on Circle Avenue, the plan to build new senior apartment housing on that site and one adjoining along Circle is a great use and a major upgrade. Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park are all actively looking to add housing specifically for elders as they downsize in their home communities. Finally, there is a new proposal for retail on the longvacant gateway site at Madison and Harlem. While a strip mall might not be our first choice for this prime parcel, our urban wonk gets excited by the notable site plan the council approved. Instead of placing the almost 6,000-square-foot structure at the rear of the lot and leading with an ugly parking lot — as in the standard-issue strip mall — developer and property owner Jay Javors has fronted the building right on Harlem with the parking to the west. This is a respectful bow to Forest Park’s handsome century-old downtown with a preserved street wall less oriented to autos and more scaled to pedestrians. This is a handsome project. Congratulations to Forest Park, its mayor, administrator and council, for bringing these winning developments to fruition.

S

anta Claus is a myth in the sense that it is something many people believe in but in reality is not true. Santa Claus, however, is a myth in another sense of the word. MerriamWebster tells us the word “myth” also means “a popular belief or tradition that has grown up … embodying the ideals and institutions of a society or segment of society.” The myths we believe in for ourselves are revealed in the stories we repeat to explain who we are and where we are headed: Conquering Hero, Victim, Nice Guy, Feminist, I Pulled Myself Up By My Bootstraps. The question I want to ask in this column is, “What myths do we believe about Forest Park?” What stories do we find ourselves telling others to explain who we are as a village and where we are going? It’s an important question because myths are powerful. They give meaning and direction to our lives. See if you recognize any of the three myths that follow, and remember that a myth, in the sense I’m using the word, is a story which empowers and guides people who believe in it, whether it’s empirically verifiable or not. Yes, we can: Forest Park is a good village for families with small children or empty-nesters, but while Proviso East was a failed school, when your kids approached high school age you’d have to start thinking of moving to another town unless you socked away enough money to pay for a private school. That narrative was accepted uncritically for decades and caused hundreds, if not thousands, of Forest Parkers to relocate. That is, until Ned Wagner, Claudia Medina and a small group of like-minded Forest Park residents climbed to the top of a visionary mountain where they saw the promised land, i.e. a view of what Proviso East could become. Fueled by belief in that revised myth, they not only won the election for school board but are also making verifiable changes in District 209. The Windmill Transformation: When I moved to town in 1982, Madison Street was in bad shape. Besides a few thriving businesses like the Venture Restaurant, Peaslee’s Hardware, and the Ben Franklin five and dime, what you saw as you cruised Forest Park’s main business drag was a chain of shot-and-beer bars flanked on both sides by empty storefronts. “There wasn’t anyone saying this town was either dead or dying,” longtime resident Art Jones recalled in an interview in 2017, “but everyone was seeing that it was.” And then a miracle I’ll call Windmill happened. Longtime residents and businessmen Art Jones and Bill Hughes, together with Carl Schwebl and John Trage, began a venture in transformation by forming an organization called the Mainstreet Redevelopment Corporation to promote business in town. Jerry Vanisi, Jones, Hughes, Schwebl, Bill Mackenzie, and Peter Thiesse then created an organization they called Windmill through which they would buy buildings, rehab them and rent them out with the option to buy.

“We never intended to make any money,” said Jones. “That was not the objective whatsoever. We had access to capital to invest, and once we started doing that, it was sort of like Field of Dreams — i.e. if you build it, they will come. Every storefront that we bought was with the purpose of renovating and upgrading it and then ultimately selling it.” It was a tremendous risk, which many old-timers said would never work. That move coincided with the election of Anthony Calderone, who has been a pro-business mayor, plus a booming economy. The result is what you see today. The Diversity Myth: Unlike our neighbor Oak Park, Forest Park had no intentional plan for becoming a diverse community. It just sort of happened. I attribute the evolution toward diversity to a palpable, blue collar, unpretentious, accepting temperament in the culture of the village, which is still evident to people who choose to move here. Again, unlike Oak Park, which promotes itself as a city on a hill and a model of diversity for the whole country, Forest Parkers often self-effacingly jokes that the town they live in has more dead people than those who are alive (thanks to our extensive cemetery system). That diversity didn’t grow out of a plan but rather out of some rich cultural soil. Evidence that the tree growing in that soil is bearing good fruit is seen day after day in our five schools. For example, two years ago I interviewed eighthgraders about how they perceive the race situation in town. I wrote, “There was a consensus in the class that race relations in Forest Park Middle School are pretty good. Catherine Clarke, whose mother is white and whose father is Mexican, said she gets along with everybody in the school ‘for the most part.’ When Ms. Williams [a teacher] pushed her a little on the ‘for the most part’ of her response and asked if the reason she didn’t get along as well with some people was because of their race or personality, Clarke answered, ‘Their personality.’” Leadrick Hill said, “At lunch I sit with five people who are Mexican and I’m the only black person at the table. It’s nothing weird or anything. We have sat together since the sixth grade. We all get along well because we know each other well.” I don’t think the three myths are in competition with each other in a mutually exclusive way, but right now, to my observation, the Windmill myth is the story that informs the business owners, who largely work, but don’t live, here. The other two myths are stories often told by residents — who live here but mostly don’t work here — to articulate why they love this village. My question: “Can we — all of us — create a myth, write a new narrative which not only expresses why we love this community but also propels us into an even better future together?” Maybe Leadrick Hill gave us a way to move forward when he said, “We all get along well, because we know each other well.”

Parents & All Adults: Influence is a Super Power! Combat Underage Drinking

O

ur community has a high percentage of underage drinking, and the Oak Park River Forest Workgroup for Positive Youth Development (PYD) is calling on adults and youth alike to take active steps to do something about it. One significant stride would be knowing the facts about the harm caused by alcohol consumption, especially in the emerging adolescent brain. Alcohol affects areas of the brain that are still developing until 25 years old, including those needed for executive function and decision-making, according to studies by many distinguished researchers and reports by the U.S. Surgeon General and the Centers for Disease Control. Drawing from a variety of sectors—from parents to law enforcement, from educators to health-care leaders—PYD was formed on the heels of Illinois Youth Survey results. In those surveys of 8th to 12th graders in Oak Park and River Forest, local youth have reported troubling attitudes toward, and activity involving, drinking alcohol that consistently and significantly exceeds the state average.

An overly permissive attitude among adults is clearly part of the problem, according to IYS results as well as feedback from focus groups organized by PYD. “Our youth say that many parents and other grown-ups are either providing access to alcohol, or are turning a blind eye to it,” said Kelly O’Connor, Oak Park Township Prevention Outreach Coordinator. “That’s not doing teens any favors. The longer our youth delay the onset of alcohol use, the better their chances for leading a healthy, productive life free of addiction and other issues related to alcohol.” For more information or to get involved with PYD, visit http://oakparktownship.org/pyd or contact Aimee Bates at abates@oakparktownship.org or call 708-383-8005, extension 118.

Dr. Bender ventured into solo practice 8 years ago with only an urge to help people, the support of her family, and eleven years’ experience practicing on the south side of Chicago in a large podiatry practice (Jondelle Jenkins, DPM). Working with Dr. Jenkins gave her solid experience but more importantly invaluable development and support. Today’s healthcare field is constantly changing with the discovery of new techniques, more advanced imaging and treatment options, and most recently, with electronic health records. Dr. Bender offers comprehensive foot and ankle services, including digital x-rays, easy street parking, in office physical therapy, and Russian, Spanish, and Polish translation. She offers

convenient hours, including evenings, and even a willingness to make off-hour house calls when necessary; particularly within the Village of Oak Park, which she calls home. When asked what motivates her, Dr. Bender first cites three things, the love and support of her husband who never once questioned leaving the financial security of Dr. Jenkins’ large practice for the relative unknown of starting out on her own. Second, she credits her two young daughters and her desire to have them see that goals can be achieved with a dream along with focus and hard work. But lastly she credits the years she spent figure skating as building the foundation entirely upon which her work ethic is based. The best part of her job is seeing patients returning pain free for their follow up appointments—knowing she has provided the care that made such a positive impact in another person’s life. Celebrating Seniors Week | Calendar of Events

CELEBRATING SENIORS WEEK: ENGAGE AT EVERY AGE

W

ith a stroke of luck, I stepped into the Celebrating Seniors Coalition at its inception eight years ago. Ever since, it has been a rewarding, educational journey that has grown in not only my heart but the entire community’s.

This year we added 60 more incredible seniors to our notable honoree list, bringing to well over 500 the total we have recognized in our history. The Class of 2018 is filled with kindness, generosity, wisdom, achievement and other inspiring qualities.

It’s a wonderful thing to be a part of businesses, volunteers, nonprofits, and government agencies coming together to honor and embrace aging. This year, we have nearly 50 educational and entertaining events packed into a single week hosted throughout Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park. To learn more, check out our calendar of events

One of our missions is to provide support to our older community members in need. Through ad sales in the Celebrating Seniors Guide, generous benefactors and patrons, as well as others who donate throughout the year, we are grateful to be able to provide emergency funds as those needs arise.
