Sox boss hopes to bring Madison Ave. to Madison St.

Village council will decide on Jerry Reinsdorf’s application on April 23 By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Chicago White Sox and Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf wants to invest in Forest Park. The Northbrook-based Madison Avenue Real Estate Group, which is managed by Reinsdorf and his longtime business partner Robert Judelson, aims to build a four-story commercial and residential building at the old Brian Boru Irish Pub site, 7652 W. Madison St., on the lots between Dunkin Donuts and Mugsy’s. The proposed plans have been approved by the Forest Park Zoning Board of Appeals and were recently approved by the Planning Commission on April 2. The last step, which separates Madison Avenue Real Estate’s mixed-use dreams from reality, will take place at the next village council meeting on April 23 when council members vote on whether to approve the group’s building plans. “It has two sets of approvals behind it,” Steve Glinke, head of the Department of Public Health, said about the group’s chances of acceptance. If the council approves the application, Reinsdorf would then move to buy 7652 W. Madison St. from GRP Madison LLC, which includes Robert Palley, the developer behind the River Forest townhomes that replaced the old Hines Lumber site at 7820 Madison St. Brian Boru’s 18,750-square-foot parcel is listed for See REINSDORF on page 5

The Yogi Berra School of English Interdiction

A

s we get older, it gets tougher to find the right word and easier to find the wrong one. I think it’s because the synopsis in our brains are not firing correctly. I exhume it’s because we’re losing our vocabulary. Is my wife being factitious when she says she wants to take a walk in the cold rain? Or is this an early sign of salinity? I’m not going through a whole resuscitation of every verbal gaffe we udder. Not to sound portentous, but I make lesser mistakes than most people, thanks to my English lessens. We diaphragmed sentences to show how the adverses modified the verbs. We studied every part of speech: particles, additives and conjunctures. We covered everything from A to B. We accompliced so much without killing the language. We expended our vocabulary, mesmerizing new words every day. We also gnu

their meanings. But it’s not like I was some kind of genus. I once contused celery with salary. But what’s wrong with that? We got salary because Roman soldiers were paid with salt. Maybe you are being paid with a green herb that comes in stalks? Lettuce continue. We are libel to make mistakes, due to our instability to remember what we learned in school — “I before E excerpt after See,” that kind of thing. English has so many rules and so many expectorations! Plus we had to intent all of our paragraphs. There’s no doubt that writhing is difficult. It’s recumbent on us to improve our word choices. I used to think grammar was our primal problem but know it’s using the rite word. Some are so alike. I was just complimenting someone on their new set of indentures. She got mad and claimed she was no longer bound to toil for another until

she repaved her debt. I was congratulating a student on how she conjugaled her verb tenses. She looked at me funny, like she wanted to send me to prism. Confucian reigns in our communication. How about when someone says, “Uh huh,” and we think they already carried out the garbage. But they really meant “Uh, uh,” they haven’t gotten to it yet. Just the slightest change in infection turns a yes into a know. I can’t account the number of thymes I’ve heard people use the wrong word. I marble when they quarry me about the simplest ones. Have they ever thought of using a tyrannosaurus to find the cinnamon? The dictionary is another resonance book. It contains the meanderings of every word, secluding my favorite one, zowie! Zowie means astonishment and that’s how church members reacted when I was reading a tribute to my in-laws for their Golden Anniversary. I said that they had first met while sinning around the piano. ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. Area schools districts have received a partial, albeit small, reimbursement of funds tied to a bad investment that defrauded approximately 300 Illinois governmental agencies, among others outside the state. The investment in the fraudulent First Farmers loans through Nikesh Patel, who was convicted of fraud in March and sentenced to 25 years in prison, were made through the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Trust on behalf of the Proviso Township School Treasurer’s Of Office and Forest Park School District 91. Those two entities have received a partial reimbursement as lawyers and the federal government collect funds through assets seized from Patel. D91, which lost $199,412 in the investment scam, recently received two disbursements — one for $10,400 and another for $8,320 — according to an email from Assistant Superintendent of Operations Edward Brophy. The Proviso Township School Treasurer’s Office, which invested about $2 million in First Farmers through IMET for the 13 school districts the office represents, received a disbursement of $99,718. That disbursement was divided between the 13 districts, 19.78 percent of which or $19,724, going to Proviso High Schools District 209. The school board notes in a memo that, “There was no fault by the Proviso Township Treasurer’s Office” in the fraudulent investment. CONTACT: tim@oakpark.com

Resurfacing costs lower than expected, construction coming soon Village could use cost savings to resurface another alley, said Village Administrator Tim Gillian By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

An early start to annual alley, street and water main reconstruction work in Forest Park is expected following action by the village council April 9. Village Administrator Tim Gillian said he hopes to start street and alley resurfacing projects later this month or early next month after holding preconstruction meetings last week. Last year, similar projects did not begin until July. Streets to be resurfaced are the 600 block of Marengo and the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Elgin Avenue. The project also includes replacing four-inch water mains in the 600 block of Marengo and the 1000 block of Elgin with 8-inch versions, a continuation of an effort to replace all 4-inch water mains with 8-inch versions to increase water pressure and improve fire protection. As streets over the smaller water mains are targeted for resurfacing, village officials are incorporating the water main upgrade to avoid resurfacing the street twice.

Alleys to be resurfaced are in the 900 block between Hannah and Circle Avenues and the 1000 block between Circle and Marengo Avenues. The village council voted 5-0 April 9 to award the contract for the street and water main project to Uno Construction Company Inc., the lowest of five bidders. Uno Construction’s bid of $722,326.25 was $173,000 less than the village engineer’s estimate. The project will be paid from the water fund and the Village Improvement Program (VIP) fund, a debt service fund committed to public infrastructure improvements. On April 9, the village council also voted 5-0 to awarding the contract for the alley project to J. Nardulli Concrete Inc., the lowest of 11 bidders. Nardulli Concrete’s bid of $595,345.92 was $76,000 less than the village engineer’s estimate. The project will be paid from the VIP fund. Village Administrator Tim Gillian said both firms have performed similar work for the village in the past with Nardulli Concrete receiving the contract for alley projects last year.

Gillian said it was “hard to say” why bids came in lower than estimated but speculated the village’s early call for bids might have encouraged companies looking for work to submit more competitive bids. “Sometimes if you bid early, you may get a better bid,” he said. Gillian said village officials will consider using the $249,000 difference between the estimates and contracts to add a third alley project this year. “If we can add an alley, we will make that determination,” he added. Specifications for the alley projects include reconstruction of the alleys with Portland cement concrete pavement, subbase granular material and storm sewer and drainage structures. Driveways, curbs and sidewalks also will be removed and replaced. Specifications for the street resurfacing projects include hot mix asphalt surface removal, leveling binder, surface course and binder course. Parkways also will be restored and curbs and sidewalks will be removed and replaced.

D209 board nixes administrative hires, promotions School board split on superintendent’s staff restructuring By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

The Proviso Township High School District 209 Board of Education recently voted against a series of administrative hires and promotions recommended by Superintendent Jesse Rodriguez, which prompted a two-sided debate among board members about administrative salaries and the process for hiring and promoting administrators. The board voted 4-3 against hiring Anthony Brazouski as assistant superintendent of human resources. Brazouski, an administrator from Wisconsin, was supposed to replace Dr. Kim Echols, whose resignation is effective July 1. Board President Theresa Kelly, along with members Amanda Grant, Sam Valtierrez and Della Patterson, voted against the hire while Claudia Medina, Ned Wagner and Rodney Alexander all voted for it. Dissenting board members expressed concerns about the process by which Brazouski was selected. A hiring committee made up of union representatives and administrators vetted candidates. Rodriguez said Brazouski was the top can-

didate for the position. However, one of the website. Medina, Wagner and Alexander all argued committee members remarked at the school board meeting that Brazouski had not been that the board should trust the superintenthe most qualified candidate, based on a dent’s employment recommendations, with Medina saying that the process “was hanfour-part scoring system. Kelly, Grant, Valtierrez and Patterson also dled with high professionality.” The four board members who voted the voted against the superintendent’s recommoves down, however, argued mendations for two non-certithat the pay raises should be fied staff positions that would reconsidered in light of the have entailed pay raises. district having made cuts in Rob Daniels, a program anaother areas, such as instruclyst, would have been reclassition. “You just moved somebody out of the way and put somebody else in,” Patterson said, adding that she was told that the district had no money to implement an eight-period day. “Now, all of a sudden, we have this influx of money,” she said. The three members in support of the staff restructuring, in addition to Rodriguez himself, suggested that voting against the superintendent’s recommendations signals that the district’s top administrator doesn’t have the power restructure his own central office. Board members voted unanimously for Greta Mitchell-Williams to replace Diane Deckert as director of curriculum, assessment and program evaluation. In addition, Kelly split with Patterson, Valtierrez and Grant, which allowed Rajeska Jackson, a district grants specialist, to be promoted to the office of academics and family services by a 4-3 vote. Kelly’s vote outraged Alexander, who claimed that the board president was contradicting herself by voting for Jackson even though her position had not been posted, which was the reason why Kelly said she was voting against Moreno’s and Daniels’ promotions. HOT PROPERTY: Reinsdorf ’s group hopes to build a mixed commercial and real estate development on the Old Brian Boru site.

REINSDORF Brian Boru from page 1 $724,999 on Redfin, which notes “the seller has accepted an offer.” That’s nearly 20 percent less than the original November 2016 asking price of $899,900 listed on Redfin. “I think from the time of council passage, we’d be looking at potentially 4-6 weeks before there’s a shovel in the ground,” Glinke said. “Depends on how quickly they can close” and sell the property. Reinsdorf ’s company hopes to build a fourstory building with commercial space on the bottom floor and 36 apartment units on the ascending three. Balconies will accompany apartments, and bike racks will be incorporated into the final design. Forty enclosed parking spaces will also be featured on the ground floor. Michigan Avenue Real Estate did not respond to an interview request on why they’re hoping to build in Forest Park. Glinke credits high-profile investor interest to the village’s lot size, low price point compared to some neighboring communities, access to public transportation and proximity to the city.

“It’s a quick trip downtown, it’s masstransit friendly, there’s a lot of reasons, it has a lot of advantages,” Glinke said. Brian Boru, an Irish pub and eatery named after an 11th-century Irish king, closed in April 2016, less than one year after it opened. Glinke believes River Forest’s parking permit requirement on the 100 block of Ashland Avenue hurt the business’ event space business. “It had some impact,” he said. Brian Boru succeeded Molly Malone’s, which closed in October 2014 after 12 years operating in Forest Park. Molly Malone’s was famous for its traditional Irish music jam sessions. Armed thief pirates store deposit at Long John Silver’s A Long John Silver’s employee walked outside to deposit the store’s earnings from the day when a man with a gun demanded she drop her purse, cash and personal belongings. The employee walked to her car parked outside 123 Harlem Ave. about 9:27 p.m. on April 14, when a man pushed a gun to her head and demanded, “Give me your money,” according to the police report. “What money?” she responded. “Your money,” he said. The woman threw down her grey purse and crouched on the ground. The man then pointed the gun to her face, and ordered her to go back inside the restaurant. She told police the man took the $1,500 store deposit, along with $80 in personal cash, cellphone and IDs that were in her purse. Another employee, who told police it was his third day on the job and that he was training to be store manager, was outside when the robbery occurred. He said the man pointed his gun at him and ordered him back in the store. He believes the store deposit was $1,900. The robber reportedly ran westbound on Dixon Street, and made it to Elgin Avenue.

Fraudsters scam woman out of $6K After purportedly finding $100,000, two men claiming to be HOBO employees scammed a woman into paying them $6,000. The woman was entering Living Word Christian Center about 10:30 a.m. on April 10 when a man approached her asking for help reading the numbers on a bag, according to the police report. The woman declined his offer. He then went up to another man nearby asking for help reading the numbers on the bag, and the second man claimed not to be able to read the numbers. The two then opened the bag and claimed to find more

than $100,000 worth of cash, bonds and lottery tickets inside. The first man said he was an employee from HOBO and went inside the store to have the store manager count the funds. The other man stayed outside with the victim. After a few minutes, the first man returned and said the manager confirmed there was $100,000 worth of cash and lottery tickets and at least $740,000 worth of bonds in the bag. He said the HOBO manager told him he would take possession of the bag and give each of the three people $50,000, so long as the three had an initial $50,000 down payment. The three agreed the woman would only have to put $10,000 in. The woman didn’t have the money to cover the proposed down payment, so she drove to a credit union and withdrew $5,600 and added $400 in cash to the group’s bundle. She returned to HOBO, where the first man then went inside the store to tell the manager she didn’t have enough. The second man waited with her for a while, but then got out of the car to use the bathroom. He never returned. The woman waited around for an hour, and then went inside the HOBO. She asked the store manager about the incident. He said he had no idea what she was talking about and did not have any employees who matched the scammers’ description.

Burglars take cash, laser from car At some point between Jan. 20 and 21, burglars broke into a man’s car, parked on the 700 block of Polk Street, and stole a man’s wallet containing credit cards and $40 cash. Offenders also took a laser valued at $60. The man said his doors were not secured.

Drechsler, Brown & Williams

Car stolen from Thornton’s A man stole a woman’s car after she left it unlocked, parked and running during a quick trip to Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave., on April 11, according to the police report. Police responded about 9:25 p.m. and the victim reported she left her parked car unlocked and running while she stopped in to shop. When she returned, her car was gone. A short time later, an Oak Park police officer spotted a vehicle, whose registration and description matched the stolen car, parked on Madison Street, just east of Austin Boulevard. A Forest Park officer arrived on the scene and was able to confirm the driver’s description, based on the Thornton’s video surveillance. Police detained the man, and found a small package of tinfoil containing four grams of PCP on him. Police then transported the victim to the scene, who identified the suspect as the one who stole her vehicle. Police charged the man with motor vehicle theft.

Gas siphoned from parked car At some point between 6 p.m. on April 14 and 11 a.m. on April 15, someone stole all the gas from a car parked in the Forest Park Baptist Church parking lot, according to a police report. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, April 9-15, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Neil Rembos purchased 903 Harlem Ave. in May 2017 By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

A Hinsdale man in 2017 paid more than $1 million to purchase the car wash at Harlem Avenue and Lexington Street, and now the business is in the process of getting a complete makeover. Celltech LLC, which is managed by Neil Rembos, bought the Premier Car Wash property at 903 Harlem Ave. for $1.055 million in May 2017, according to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds. Rembos

bought the lot from Odock Two Inc., which is managed by Katherine Madock of River Forest. “I have to think there’s probably some value in the business as well, not just the land,” said Steve Glinke, director of Forest Park’s Department of Public Health and Safety. Glinke said the purchase and renovation of Premier Car Wash is a family deal between father Steven and son Neil Rembos. Steven Rembos did not respond to an interview request.

The Rembos’ plan to partially demolish the site, build a more automated car wash and replace all the equipment, Glinke said. Construction will run through the spring, and Glinke estimates it should be done by late summer. “The gist I got was they wanted to update some of the mechanicals; it’s a little bit of an onion,” Glinke said. “They want to make it more automated, so they won’t have as many onsite employees. New equipment, different envelope.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

“ My name is Mark Maylath and I’m a picky eater.” MARK MAYLATH Firefighter

finally cooking the pork chops. The recipe for this evening? Weber added banana peppers to the meat, and closed the meal with a homemade dessert of layered ice cream sandwiches, peanut butter, Cool Whip and crushed Oreo cookies. His meal got rave reviews. Cooking and eating comprise a big part of firefighters work lives. Lt. Tim Conrad said firefighters spend one-third of their lives with their shift mates. Shifts stretch 24-hours and then they’re off 48-hours. When firefighters are not out on a call, refining their professional skills or working out in the small weight room at the station, they make the second floor of the station their home. And that includes the kitchen. At one point Weber even recalls setting off the station’s smoke alarm with his pork chops. “A pan got away from me and the whole place was filled with smoke,” he said, laughing at the odds. Conrad said that when he starts his shift, one of the first things the group does is sit around the dining room table and decide what they will make for dinner and who will be the lead chef. There are three shifts at the firehouse, and each shift has its own refrigerator and floor to ceiling shelving for dry goods. When asked who was the best cook, the

seven shift members said that each person has their signature dish, and the memories that accompany it. Yvan Woitecki, 32, a paramedic who has been with the Forest Park Fire Department for a little over a year, said he is most proud of his chicken salad—made with honey, mustard, lots of mayo, white chicken meat and whatever vegetables are available—and is always tinkering with the recipe. The firehouse meal he’ll really remember, though, was on December 25th last year, Christmas Day, when firefighters decided to add a little extra to the grocery budget. Weber used the extra funds to buy a prime rib roast. “I’d never done prime rib before,” he said.

“But it was excellent.” Travis Myers, 39, who has been with the fire department for nine years, said his signature dish is Philly-style cheese steaks. “I’m very specific, I have to have ribeye steaks,” Myers said, adding that the sub rolls can’t be too hard, French bread won’t do, and that he prefers to mix Cheez Whiz and onions into the steak, although in a pinch, white American cheese will do. “I would eat cheese steak everyday if I could,” he said. Mark Maylath, 42, who has been with the Fire Department for more than 15 years, sometimes complicates dinner plans. “My name is Mark Maylath and I’m a picky eat-

On the rare occasion the group can’t decide what to have for dinner, Maylath volunteers to cook. That way, he said no one can sneak onions in the food. But not all the firefighters like to cook. “I do like to order pizza,” said Kenneth Hriensaitong, 44, adding that he’s rarely cooked in the 12 years he’s been in the department. Hriensaitong started a debate about which restaurant makes the best pie in Forest Park. After a few minutes of sparring, the group finally agreed that McGaffer’s Saloon makes excellent thin crust. The big dining room table where the meal was served is not only in the center of firefighters’ living quarters, but also serves as the center of their community. During the meal, attendees rarely completed a sentence without a shift member interrupting. At times, shift leader Conrad was referred to as “Pooh Bear.” Conrad said it’s often around that table where firefighters remember who they are and why they do such a dangerous job. The group talks about charity projects, family members and stories are told about the old-timers—remembering the heroic things they did, funny things they said and, of course, their favorite meals.

Since gaming has been legal, Mugsy’s has pocketed $55,326, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. Buckley, who compared video gaming to buying a lottery ticket, said he’s used the funds to pay bills and plans to renovate his bar soon — he wants to update the garden area, install new flooring, refurbish Mugsy’s bathroom and more. He said he’s talked to nearby retailers — Starship Restaurant & Catering and My Best Friend Groom & Board pet grooming — and said they haven’t experienced a loss in sales because of the practice. Without gaming, “I would lose a number of different things: renovating the place, paying bills, and just keeping my head above water. Mohr Concrete open by appointment Concrete sales closed but other surplus materials available By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Staff Reporter

It’s been about two months since H.J. Mohr & Sons Co., Oak Park’s oldest business, ceased operations selling concrete. Employees of the concrete plant are laid off, but no one has been officially fired from their position, said Tracy Walsh, who works at the factory and is the daughter of Mohr vice president Karen Richards.

Walsh said in a telephone interview that the business still is operating Monday through Friday, but buyers should call ahead and not just show up. “The doors are locked because we are here upstairs at the office; any of our valuable customers know that,” she said. She said the company still has bag goods for sale, such as mortar mix, stucco supplies, bags of different types of stone and supplies for sewer construction and maintenance.

“There are so many things we have in the warehouse,” she said. “We have everything but the Ready Mix concrete.” Richards told Wednesday Journal in early April that the company is working with a lawyer on the company’s future and could not discuss the situation due to a confidentiality agreement. Two Betsy Ross special ed teachers resign

Parents allege teachers were forced to leave over disagreements with principal By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

During an emotional school board meeting on April 12, a group of parents alleged Forest Park District 91 administration officials forced the resignations of two special education teachers at Betsy Ross Elementary School over disagreements they had with the school’s principal. The parents also vowed to move their families out of Forest Park because the teachers are no longer in the district. The school board approved the resignation of special education teachers, along with other employees of District 91, without comment as part of the board’s consent agenda. The Review is not naming the teachers who resigned so as not to impact their chances of future employment. Their resignation will be effective Aug. 1. Because the board is limited by an Illinois law that states the administration cannot publicly discuss personnel issues, District 91 Superintendent Louis Cavallo declined to directly address the issue with the some 15 parents and students who attended the meeting. “You’re breaking the community and you’re breaking this town,” Heather Lindstrom, whose daughter, Grace, is in the special education program at Betsy Ross, told

the seven school board members and other administrators at the meeting. Repeating “this is not what it appears” and that there were “no politics involved whatsoever,” Cavallo stressed to parents that the two teachers would be replaced, adding that District 91 might even hire another special education teacher at Betsy Ross, since the program is set to double to 15 students next year. Lindstrom called the two teachers irreplaceable, and said they have helped Grace make academic and social progress she was never expected to make in her lifetime. She said she’ll probably move from Forest Park now that Betsy Ross’ special education program has changed, and added that the feeling was mutual among the six other families whose children are in the program. “I give up; they win. I give in to their dirty politics,” Lindstrom said. She was joined by her husband, David, who said he met with Betsy Ross Principal William Milnamow and Grace’s teachers earlier in the day. David Lindstrom believes Milnamow gave the teachers two options: resign or be fired. He said their resignation stems from disagreements they had with the principal and alleges there was a “secret meeting”

between Cavallo and Milnamow, where the two decided to force the teachers to leave. Cavallo said there was no secret meeting. “I’m really disappointed in the fact that this backdoor politicking is going on and to see that this forced resignation is being voted on and approved by you people,” Lindstrom told the board. “We already had to pull one child out because of bullying, now I have to fear for the safety of another child.” While asking board members to reconsider their decision, Samara Condon, whose son, Carter, is a part of the special education program, showed the seven board members a picture of her son, because “I think it’s something to talk about these kids, but it’s something else to see their face.” Like the Lindstroms, Condon said she will probably move from Forest Park thanks to the change at Betsy Ross. “I really hope that the decision was made with the kids’ best decision at heart, because my son is everything to me,” she said. The board also chose not to renew a contract with Maureen Skelton, an art teacher at Betsy-Ross who has taught at District 91 for 21 years. In an April 13 phone interview, Skelton said that Milnamow told her through email that she would be losing her job, after

giving her a “needs improvement” with no chance of remediation on her professional evaluation this year. Skelton said she has been evaluated by other principals within the district three times before, and never had a problem. This represents her first time being evaluated by Milnamow, she said. “It’s really hard to be here today. The kids are loving on me, and it’s hard, it’s emotional,” she said. She said Milnamow started out the year asking her for documents that he didn’t request from other teachers — her lesson plans for the entire year, for example — and also told her that all art projects had to start and end within her hour-long class. “Art is a process,” she said. “Sometimes you gotta let the glue dry before you can add the color.” She added: “I feel targeted.” Milnamow declined to comment on personnel issues. The board also approved the resignations of a special education teacher and an art teacher at Forest Park Middle School. The school board chose not to renew the contracts of a part-time art teacher at Betsy Ross and Field Stevenson School, and a full-time third-year teacher at Grant-White School. Thomas Roy Mohr, 70, died unexpectedly from a heart attack in his home on April 15, 2018. Born in Oak Park on April 22, 1947 to Howard and Ruth (Sanderson) Mohr, he grew up in Forest Park and spent his summers on Delavan Lake in Wisconsin. His love for the lake made for an easy decision to move to the lake permanently. He and his wife, Chris, enjoyed many adventures together and there was never a dull moment with Tom. He was forever a kid at heart, telling stories and jokes. The couple owned and operated Mohr of the Wagon Wheel in the late ’70s and early ’80s and Mohr Pier Service for 32 years. For the last six years he enjoyed retirement. He also enjoyed driving around town, visiting with friends, and sharing his passion for old cars and car shows. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Thomas Mohr is survived by his wife, Christine Mohr; his children, Tom (Sylvia) Gottschalk, Amy (Marcus) Hackney, and Abbie Mohr; his grandchildren, Holly and Eric Mohr, Izabel Gottschalk and Brooklyn and Cole Hackney; his brother, Mike (Maureen) Mohr; and his

mother-in-law, Jane Kent. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patti Basso; and his father-in-law, Gordon Kent. His family will receive friends for a celebration of life at the American Legion Hall at 111 S. Second St., across from Betzer Funeral Home, in Delavan, Wisconsin for remembrances of Tom and refreshments from 2 until 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. Interment will be at the Delavan Arboretum.

Paradise in process: our small but mighty town Frustrated D91 parents

T

he connections between the parents of students with special needs and a school district are often intense. The social and academic challenges are complex, the advocacy parents bring is urgent, the relationship between teacher, parent and student can bring an intimacy that goes beyond a typical school and home situation. All of that played out last week at a meeting of the District 91 Forest Park public school board. As part of its consent agenda, the school board was ready to approve the resignations of two special ed teachers at Betsy Ross School. But a group of parents whose special needs children have bonded with those teachers were not content to let these resignations/dismissals pass without strong comment. The outcome did not change. These teachers will depart the district this summer. The school board did not comment. Supt. Lou Cavallo declined to directly address the upset of some 15 parents and students who attended the usually quiet board meeting. He rightly cited the privacy of personnel decisions under ongoing contracts between the district and its teachers. The Review properly reported on the upset exchange at the public meeting. So every player took their assigned role. The parents lodged sincere protests. The school board assented to the resignations. The superintendent stood by the contract. The local paper reported the news. The question is what happens going forward. We have watched in many school districts over many decades as the relationship between special needs parents and special ed departments has fractured in a volatile fashion. It’s emotional and it’s painful for all involved. Who in D91 is going to work to rebuild trust? We have lauded this district over many years for its educational initiatives. Our ongoing criticism is that, for a small district, it is poor at communicating and relationship building. The immediate response of the district isn’t encouraging. Perhaps, in a moment of pique, both the superintendent and the school board president vow to stop talking to the Review. Not much of a solution to a longstanding communication problem.

West Loop comes to Madison

Forest Park’s development future is getting a prestigious shot in the arm with news that a premier Chicago apartment developer is proposing a strong project for a Madison Street site that has withered as a stand-alone bar/restaurant location. Michigan Avenue Real Estate Group — yes, Jerry Reinsdorf is a principal — has plans before the Plan Commission to construct a 36-unit, four-story apartment and commercial project on the vacant site of Molly Malone’s at 7652 W. Madison. Take a look at its website and you’ll see a batch of high-end projects in the exploding West Loop. The proposal on Madison confirms the vison of the remaking of that stretch of the street in a streetscaping project driven by Forest Park and also benefitting River Forest. With a new TIF, River Forest is actively buying property to boost its side of the street. This apartment project would be a great outcome for a key parcel in Forest Park.

Y

eah, I wasn’t born in Forest Park. I didn’t live here in the 1980s like many of you. Been thinking for years about what makes someone a “Forest Parker” because it seems to be the thing that every once in a while is used in an exclusive club sort of way, a badge of honor. I think I am a part of a new Forest Park. Part of a collective group of people who love our town and participate in the little things that make a big difference. It’s no different from the old group of Forest Parkers, who did the same thing, just part of the continual renewal of our town. While watching the Loyola Elite Eight game at Fat Duck a few weeks ago, my friend said, “Forest Park is paradise.” Though at first I thought paradise would have more coconuts, I soon realized she’s right. I like sharing my time and family with this unique and sometimes imperfect town. I have found a place here to be myself, and the town likes me. Forest Park is ever evolving, and I’m appreciative of the town I inherited when I moved here and proud of the things I have been a part of improving. About seven years ago, Mrs. Mortensen, now a retired teacher, came to our PTO meeting and mentioned that our local elementary school didn’t give teachers recognition for Teacher Appreciation Week. She wasn’t rude, or angry, just polite and informative. It didn’t mean parents didn’t appreciate our teachers, we just didn’t have a tradition, so we created one. With the many hands of parent volunteers we have evolved to be a force of gratitude. Almost 50 parents will come together to create over 1,000 gifts of gratitude to shower on our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week because we love our schools and all the people who help our children. The Forest Park Historical Society had some tough years and we have been rebuilding with the help of some old Forest Parkers and new Forest Parkers and even a few Oak Parkers. Together we are proud to showcase the history of our town — from the amusement park to the Haymarket Monument. I am grateful that our small but dedicated group of volunteers have been able to keep our story alive. In honor of

May Day, we have even arranged a bike tour from Haymarket Square to the monument in Forest Home, followed by an after-party at the Mohr Community Center, sponsored by Revolution Brewing. A huge advantage to living in Forest Park is that we can just go straight to Forest Home without the bike tour, and join the communal reflection of the social injustice that rang across the world. It was 125 years ago that the monument was dedicated, and the pardon extended by Governor Altgeld helped to heal the pain of the Haymarket event. Forest Park also takes the time to reflect on the contributions of our older friends and neighbors. We participate in “Celebrating Seniors Week,” where the community offers events and activities that focus on the positive side of aging. It is our privilege to read about the honored “60 people over 60” in our community, because Forest Park appreciates our older community members and their current and past contributions to our community. Later in May, our park district will hold a ribbon-cutting for the Roos Recreation Center, a building erected by the hearts, minds and taxes of our town. And this weekend, a Forest Parker has organized a community clean-up starting at the Forest Park Public Library. Sure, our town has a few warts, but overall it is wonderful. I can handle a few lumps when there are plenty of positive things happening and changing that keep me enjoying our village. Like my fellow Forest Park family members, I don’t enjoy seeing members of our community hurt or distrusted. I appreciate the feedback people bring, especially when it is polite and thoughtful — like Mrs. Mortensen did. The one constant of Forest Park is that it is forever changing and our citizens do get things right, and most of us respect one another. I am excited about the future Forest Park. There are great foundations from our past, there are amazing things happening in the present, and there are new people joining our community every week who will help to make this an even better town tomorrow. Thank you, fellow Forest Parkers, for being strong, resilient and positive. Our little village gets a little better every day, and I am proud to be among the paradisemakers of our small but mighty town.
