Architectural heritage across borders
T
A look at the work of Frederick Schock in Austin
he 1970s was a decade of firsts in terms of opening up privately owned architectural treasures as local fundraisers. In 1965, the National Historic Preservation Act was passed with an eye toward encouraging the maintenance and restoration of the country’s architectural and cultural treasures. Shortly thereafter in Oak Park, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple was named the village’s first National Historic Landmark in 1971, and the organization that is today the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust got its start restoring Wright’s iconic Home and Studio. The Wright Plus Housewalk was founded a few years later. Just across Austin Boulevard another architect’s legacy was being celebrated. The Farm to table movement reaches North Lawndale

Community members enjoy fresh produce at Lawndale Farm
or several weeks in November 2018, people from North Lawndale and all across Chicago stopped by the Nichols Tower parking lot, 906 S. Homan Ave. to pick up fresh vegetables that have been grown less than a block away. The Lawndale Farm Stand was a collaboration between Gardeneers, a North Lawndale based non-profit, and DRW College Prep charter school. The idea was to give DRW students a hands-on learning experience while giving community residents an opportunity to get their hands on fresh produce. Although the farm stand closed in mid-November, the two entities are already trying to figure out a way to keep something similar going year-round. Gardeneers works to help schools throughout Chicago create and sustain community gardens. The idea is to teach students about healthy foods and generally encourage more healthy foods for communities in the food deserts. Among other things, the nonprofit manages Homan Rails Farm, which, as the name suggests, is located on a currently unused portion of a railroad embankment south of Nichols Tower and DRW College Prep. The Homan Rails Farm, located on a currently unused portion of a railroad embankment, is managed by Gardeneers, a nonprofit based in North Lawndale. schools network, which DRW is part of, said that the farm stand was a logical extension of the work Gardeneers were already doing with schools throughout Chicago. “They have existing farm stand programs with other schools that they partner with and saw the value it brings to students who are involved and the positive impact it has on the community,” she said. “Since Gardeneers work closely with our DRW College Prep, they wanted to provide our students with a chance to learn about entrepreneurship and a platform to earn

community service hours through the farm stand program.” The funding for the program came through Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago’s Healthy Seed 2.0 grant. Tran explained that Selma Sims, the manager of Homan Rail Farm, and Erica Allen, DRW’s 9th Grade science teacher, developed a curriculum where students learn about biology while working at the Homan Rails Farm. “Along with the science class, Gardeneers provides an after school enrichment program to
DRW students,” Tran added. “These students run the farm stand and help with the farm production of fresh food. Gardeneers provide Garden Educators who help lead programming for students.” While the farm stand officially started running on Oct. 11, 2018, Tran said they did a trial run a few weeks earlier and the response was encouraging. “Back in September, the farm stand did a trial run and was able to give away 40 pounds of fresh food,” Tran said. From rapping to selling shoes Success is in the details
S
abrian “Boo” Sledge, 38, the co-owner of Flee Club, a high-end resell shoe store at 121 S. Western Ave., is perhaps best known for being one-half of the rap duo Boo & Gotti. The duo peaked on the 2001 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Fiesta (Remix),” which featured Jay-Z and R. Kelly, who discovered the rappers not long before they became charttopping. On Nov. 24, 2018, which was Small Business Saturday, Sledge sat inside of the shop he owns with his best friend, Darris Kelly, and thought back on his personal evolution from rapper to sneaker connoisseur and businessman. Sledge said that R-Kelly discovered him while he was outside of Rock and Roll McDonald’s downtown, celebrating his good friend, NBA star Corey Maggette, who had just gotten a scholarship to play at Duke. R. Kelly noticed the young men looking awestruck at him and approached them. The singer singled out Sledge, telling him that he looked the part of a rapper. “He said, ‘You sure you don’t rap?’ I was like, ‘No.’ Then he said, ‘I’m sure you know about rap,’ and he asked me to rap one of my favorite songs,” Sledge recalled. “I rapped a Mase verse and he took me to the studio that same night. Eight months later, I was on his double album, “R.,” and had a record deal that next year.”

The one thing common to both of his lives, Sledge said, is something that he learned from his old mentor. “He gave me a pen and told me to write every day,” Sledge said. “That was the best advice he ever gave me.” Sledge followed that advice when, five years ago, he decided to translate his passion for shoes into a second career. He took the last of the money from his rap career and poured it into his business. And like his rap career, he paid attention to developing his craft. “We (he and Kelly), went to two sneaker conventions where you can buy, sell and trade shoes and from there, I got the gist of the business,” Sledge said.

“From there, we started our own brand and tried to get accounts with Nike and Brand Jordan, but that was super hard.” So, the friends researched stores like Flight Club and Stadium Goods that deal in rare and limited edition sneakers that regularly rival the price of MacBooks. Sledge said that the store’s brand even goes beyond shoes and into apparel, including custom t-shirts, hats and sweaters. Flee Club has more than 12,000 Instagram followers and celebrity clients that include Scottie Pippen, Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks and Bulls power forward Bobby Portis, among many others. “A lot of times, they’re looking for the newest, hottest thing on the street or a classic that’s hard
for them to get, because they don’t have time to go get it,” Sledge said. “Some days, a lot of the Bulls players come through once they get out of practice just to chill out. We have some good vibes in here.” Nowadays, Sledge is looking to the future. On the day of this interview, the store had hosted a press conference where state Rep. La Shawn Ford (8th) publicized a measure designed to increase the amount of loans and grants that the state gives expanding businesses like Flee Club. “Right now, it’s so hard to manufacture your own stuff,” Sledge said, adding that he’d love to employ local residents in his own manufacturing warehouse that pumps out Flee Club’s brand merchandise. “A lot of times, it’s easier for us to make our own rather than wait on China,” he said. “Some of us are so creative that we can do it.” In the meantime, he’s focused on manufacturing the same kind of life-changing advice that R. Kelly (who Sledge said he still supports despite the singer’s current controversies) gave him all those years ago. “I try to tell young rappers, ‘Sit down and write for a minute. Take two hours out of your day to write and rap. Sit down and sketch. You never know what that can come to,’” Sledge said. “’Stop always thinking what you’re not getting. Think about what work you’re putting in. Take an hour devoted to your craft and it will come back to you.’” Michael Romain

A regional library is coming to the West Side
I
n 2018, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Public Library system announced that they would sell “Knowledge & Wonder,” a painting by world-famous Chicago artist Kerry James Marshall, to transform the Legler Branch library, 115 S. Pulaski, into the West Side’s only regional library. The move was swiftly criticized by area community groups and by Marshall himself before the city wound up call the sale off. Introspect Youth Services recently sent more than 40 African American male students on a southern college tour this year

ntrospect Youth Services, Inc., a community-based youth agency based on the West Side, recently took more than 40 students from Michele Clark Magnet High School and Austin College Prep and Career Academy on a tour of several southern colleges earlier this year. The students, who were all

male, toured the campuses of Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Alabama A&M and Alabama State. They also explored the National Memorial and Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Ala., which explores the history of lynching. The students also visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville,

Ala., which showcases artifacts of the U.S. space program. “After meeting with parents and family of the students, the community was in full support of [Introspect] and their efforts to provide college exposure and cultural enrichment to our future male leaders,” Introspect officials noted in a statement.
“[Introspect] recognizes the scarcity of the black male on college campuses and immediately addresses the problem with college exposure, immersing male students in college life with campus tours, collegiate presentations and dining with former IYS students.” Community Editor

Austin mourns pioneering community activist Mildred Wiley was the founding chairperson for Austin Coming Together
I
n March 2019, community members mourned a pioneering community activist who had her imprint on a range of social justice and development initiatives across the West Side. Mildred Wiley, who worked for years at the nonprofit Bethel New Life, died on March 26. Wiley was the founding chairperson of the board of directors for Austin Coming Together, an alliance of many different community organizations dedicated to bettering Austin’s overall quality of life. Darnell Shields, ACT’s executive director, explained in a statement that Wiley helped establish ACT nearly 10 years ago. “Mildred was always involved in every aspect of improving the quality of life here in Austin,” Shields said. “Whether it was during her time at Bethel New Life or while serving as the chair for Austin’s Community Action Council (CAC), Mildred took great pride in being present and stepping up to make the case for those who she believed deserved better.” In a statement released last week, ACT officials said that Wiley “is the embodiment of our community: pragmatic, wise, resilient, loving, and courageous.” Wiley grew up in Austin, where she raised her family. She first moved to the community in the 1960s. Not long after coming to Austin, she began fighting for others families to move here. “Throughout her professional career she continued to lead the way for others,” the ACT statement W E S T

ACT’s Executive Director explained. “Mildred has created opportunities for others all around the West Side, including the YWCA and most recently the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago. Mildred’s greatest public achievements would include establishing Al Raby High School, helping to save the Green Line from discontinuation, and leading the creation of Austin Coming Together as its founding chairperson.” Michael Romain
