Community-led event highlights frustrations over rising taxes

The Austin-based violence prevention and youth development organization BUILD held its eighth annual youth art show on Nov. 15 at The Graff in Humboldt Park, where BUILD also has an office. A convening of works by community artists, BUILD staff and participants, the show celebrated the voices of local creatives, especially adolescent voices. “We create an art space that adds a lot of self-confidence for young artists who are in the community,” Daniel Perez, BUILD’s manager of media and communications, told Austin Weekly News. At the art show over the weekend, Austin resident Azarria Eggleston — Coordinator of Brand BUILD at the nonprofit’s art studio and maker’s lab in Austin — displayed earrings and collages that she created alongside the work of the See ART SHOW on page 6

Residents of North Lawndale burned their tax bills in a symbolic gesture Saturday as they gathered at the parking lot of Harmony Community Church to protest their soaring property taxes. Participants repeated the phrase “light the way to fairness” as they called for transparency, predictability and reform in Illinois’s property tax system. They then were invited to toss their tax bills into a bonfire.
