The prospect of a Galewood branch library moved closer to becoming reality thanks to the recent Illinois capital bill, which was signed into law earlier this summer. Tucked away in a long list of capital projects throughout the state of Illinois is up to $600,000 for a grant to the Galewood library for reconstruction projects. State representative Camille Lilly (78th) said that she worked with state Sen. Don Harmon (39th) to include the Galewood allocation in the bill, but she emphasized that the money won’t actually be available until tax revenue and proceeds from bond sales come in. And it will be up to the Chicago Public Library system and the City of Chicago to figure out exactly how that money will be spent, and whether additional See GALEWOOD on page 8

On Aug. 24, roughly 150 people gathered in Oak Park’s historic Unity Temple — the Unitarian Universalist church that worships in the century-old World Heritage Site designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright — to commemorate a historic milestone. Four hundred years ago, “about the latter end of August,” according to the early English settler John Rolfe, a Dutch ship carrying “20 and odd Negroes” arrived in the colony
of Jamestown — the first documentation of the arrival of Africans to what would become the state of Virginia. For Harvard philosopher Cornel West, the ministers of the Leaders Network (the West Side faith-based social justice organization who invited him to speak), and immigrant rights activists, that moment in Jamestown was part of the long arc of injustice that bends toward the Mexican border today. Diego Amite, 19, migrated to the United States from Colombia nearly two years ago to find a better life. Equipped with a temporary
visa, Amite secured two jobs to pay for school and living expenses, and to send some money back home to his family in Colombia. “I can say that I made the right decision to stay in this country,” he said, before adding that his optimism is tinged with fear that he might be deported at any moment. “Immigrants and communities of color are historically made the scapegoats of our problems,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, executive director of PASO West Suburban Action

Westside Health Authority gets $1M grant Rep. Ford helped secure grant through state’s appropriation process By AUSTIN TALKS Partner
Rep. La Shawn K. Ford has secured a $1 million grant for community-based activities organized by the West Side-based Good Neighbor Campaign. Operated through the Westside Health Authority, the Good Neighbor Campaign provides coordinated non-clinical, in-home wellness visits; case management; and crisis intervention services. The campaign also makes referrals for wraparound support services to West Side residents including seniors; single-parent households; first-time pregnant women; returning citizens to the community (adults and youth returning from secure confinement); high-risk, disengaged youth (youth ages 16-24 that are not employed or enrolled in school); and low-income family households. This program seeks to ensure the health and social needs of these at-risk individuals are being adequately addressed by qualified health and social service providers, and are connected to their communities. “Westside Health Authority received an increase from last year’s appropriation of $250,000 to $1,000,000 this year,” Ford said in a statement. “I will continue to fight to bring resources back to the West Side of Chicago to provide jobs and build stronger families on the West Side. I will work with Westside Health Authority and the Department of Human Services to support building a stronger West Side of Chicago.” During the last state’s last fiscal year, which ended June 30, 3,374 referrals for re-
sources through the Westside Health Authority and partner organizations have been made. About 23% of those were for employment referrals, and about 20% were referrals for housing. Block interventions and wellness checks have been scheduled in conjunction with the 15th District Chicago Police, the Cook County Sheriff ’s office, Good Neighbor Campaign-networked churches and other community partners. These interventions included street canvassing, block and community outreach and engagement, connections among neighbors on blocks, and on-the-spot wellness and case management supports for targeted populations. “No one in our community should be disconnected from available resources,” Westside Health Authority CEO Morris Reed said in a statement. “The Good Neighbor Campaign addresses the health and human service needs of those who are isolated and in need. WHA has identified, trained and engaged residents to provide wellness check-ups and service referrals for other neighbors in need. WHA’s program is unique in that it not only connects residents to resources but also connects neighbor to neighbor.” In 2020, the Community Wellness Project plans to increase its presence in zip codes 60644 and 60651 with 2 mobile crisis vans, increased wellness worker staff, and increased events, activities and promotions with the goal of increasing health and wellness among the targeted populations. Austin student named Bank of America’s Student Leader Alexis Mendoza will intern at a national leadership summit in Washington, D.C. By MATEUSZ JANIK AustinTalks
Austin resident, community volunteer and Schurz High School graduate Alexis Mendoza is one of the five young people in the Chicago area selected to be part of the 2019 Bank of America Student Leader program. “Honestly when I applied, I didn’t really think I would get in. I set the bar really low for myself. I didn’t really expect it, and when I got the call I was like, ‘Are you sure?’” said Mendoza, who averages about 15 hours of community service each week and has been involved with non-profit organizations Junior Achievement, Build On and Upward Bound. Launched in 2004, Bank of America’s Student Leader program offers high school students the opportunity to build on their leadership skills through a paid nonprofit internship and participation in a national leadership summit in Washington, D.C.
This year, the program has expanded to about 38 different financial markets and given awards to 283 students nationwide. “It started out much smaller, but it has grown to this point,” said Steve Adamczyk, Bank of America vice president and community relations manager who’s been with the company 37 years. How do students and others learn about the opportunity? “It’s all done through outreach,” Adamczyk explains.” When [the application is] opens again on Nov. 1st, it’s open to current high school juniors and seniors, and those who are community-minded.” With just a handful of spots available locally, the process of choosing who becomes a student leader is left to multiple committees that focus on factors like community involvement. “She had a good variety of volunteer experience, but I think what was different about Alexis was [her] ongoing commitment to volunteering,” Adamczyk said. She had a summer-long internship at Working in The Schools (WITS), Chicagobased non-profit that focuses on increasing childhood literacy – an opportunity she received through the Bank of America award.
“When I first met Alexis, we had some great conversations about her values,” said Kevin Hujar, a WITS program specialist. “Alexis really cares about this program and community. She’s a very goal-orientated person and very passionate about her education.” Using one-on-one reading sessions and even crafting together a dramatic play, Mendoza helped build confidence and develop language and communication skills in students participating in an early childhood program at Sumner Elementary in Lawndale, Hujar said. “She got to have more of that personal connection with our program,” Hujar said. Mendoza hopes to learn more about urban planning, aldermanic responsibility, budgeting and property taxes – knowledge she liked to use to improve the West Side. “I want to major in criminal justice … (and) to incorporate my degree into helping the Austin community,” she said. “Because I want to pursue a male-dominated field, I want to be the most-qualified person in the room.” This fall, she begins her first year at Illinois State University. VIEW points Parents of kids who commit crimes
I
t is rare for parents to come forward when their child has been accused of a horrendous crime. When the child is named, because the parents’ names are usually different, it’s not easy to connect the two. However in the recent case involving the death of Jaquan Swopes, every mother of the teens involved has spoken to the media. Jaquan was the 14-year-old who was shot in the head by a homeowner up in Lake County as he and four of his cousins along with a friend are alleged to have tried to steal a car. The Lake County prosecutor has opted to use a 200-year-old law to charge them as adults with first-degree murder in his death. Those teens are facing 20-60 years in prison; they’re being held on a milliondollar bond each. Jaquan’s mother has spoken to the media and she puts the blame for her son’s death solely on the 75-year-old homeowner. But where is her accountability for her young teen son being with his older teen cousins whom she knew had a propensity to steal cars? The mother of Diamond Davis, 18, and twins Steven and Stacy Davis, 17, was interviewed by CBS news. She said, “They didn’t mean for none of this to happen.” I understand they thought they would “only” be stealing a car. But the reality is that when one goes out to commit such a crime, success is not guaranteed. And the penalties that those three young people are facing is the reality that comes with committing crimes. Also interviewed at the same time was the mother of Kendrix Cooper, 17. She spoke about how he is reliving that night constantly. She said, “I just hope when they do get out of jail, they think
about all the things that led up to this situation.” I hope as mothers those two are thinking about all the things they didn’t do to discourage their children from becoming involved in such a situation. The mother of the fifth teen, Curtis Dawson Jr., 16, said, “I am not going to say my son is a saint but this … he’s going to spend the rest of his life in jail for something he didn’t do. I have been crying a lot.” At the same time, she admits that her son left the house Monday afternoon and she didn’t learn what happened until police called her the next morning at 7 a.m. Since all kids have cellphones, where is her constant contact with her minor child? We have a crisis going on in the black community. That crisis is one where everybody tries to find the external thing or person to blame instead of doing some self-reflection. Mothers don’t ever look at themselves and say, “I have failed as a parent. I didn’t do what I should have done to steer my child correctly. And when my child has gone astray, I have to admit that they have to pay the consequences.” Until we, as a community and society, begin to address the wayward mindset of parents, we will continue to get these young people who will do stupid things that could lead to somebody’s death. Had those young people gotten to that 75-yearold homeowner, he might not have been here today to tell the story. A final interesting note. Not one of the mothers has been reported as having said anything about raising money to get their child out of jail.

‘About the latter end of August’ 400 years ago, Africans arrived in Virginia By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Late August this year marks the 400th anniversary of English colonist John Rolfe’s letter to Sir Edwin Sandys, the treasurer of the Virginia Company of London. The letter is the first documentation of Africans in Virginia. The following is an excerpt from that letter, republished as Rolfe wrote it. Like the African Burial Ground in Manhattan — “the oldest and largest known excavated burial ground in North America for both free and enslaved Africans,” according to the National Park Service — The 1619 Project is an act of excavation. It is also a dangerous political statement, because it undercuts the lofty, but false, assumptions at the heart of the American Experiment — assumptions that are often wielded by cynics seeking to blunt protest and block any paths to power that Black people have at our disposal. “Our founding ideals of liberty and equality were false when they were written,” writes Nikole Hannah-Jones, the New York Times journalist who conceptualized the project. “Black Americans fought to make them true. Without this struggle, America would have no democracy at all.” It’s about time that Black people were

It was written by and for white men who came to this country to seize the land from those who were here and commit genocide on our first nations.” Amite said he joined PASO to help fight for other immigrants who live in perpetual fear, some in literal cages at the U.S.-Mexico border, because of President Donald Trump’s policies. Ruiz-Velasco said those policies were created by the cadre of “smart, calculated racists all around” the president, such as Stephen Miller, Trump’s senior advisor who was known to be hostile to Hispanic and other minority students while in high school and has argued that the Statue of Liberty “should not be seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants,” according to the New York Times. Ruiz-Velasco said the Trump administration’s effort to end “chain migration” will disproportionately impact the most vulnerable immigrants in the country. Chain migration is a visa program that allows documented immigrants living in the U.S. to bring their spouses and children. Ruiz-Velasco said the program allows families to reunite. Trump has called the program “terrible.” “As long as the leader of the free world is breaking up families, don’t shut up!” said Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church in Austin and co-chairman of the Leaders Network. “As long as he is destroying homes, don’t shut up! As long as he’s fanning the flames of racial hatred, don’t shut up!” Rev. Marshall Hatch, a Leaders Network co-chairman and pastor of New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in West Garfield Park, who has taken groups of people to Ghana and stood in slave castles, framed the country’s immigration crisis in historical context. “It is estimated that the average captured African’s age was 13 to 19, but the Transatlantic Slave Trade was more diabolical than we’ve been taught because it was literally the trafficking of children,” Hatch said. “We can see from what’s going on at our southern border that America has a long history of abusing working children in factories and building our wealth on the backs of those who are disenfranchised, poor, young and vulnerable. We’re not just here for the people on the southern border, but we’re here for ourselves. We will not go backward divided, we will go forward together.”

During a prayer, Rev. Alan Taylor, the senior minister at Unity Temple, called for blessings on the multiracial, ecumenical crowd of people gathered “in shared lamentation at the inhumanity of our nation’s policies in dealing with human beings seeking a better life than they have known.” Cornel West, the Harvard philosophy professor and public intellectual, spoke moments before Amite and railed against the government’s treatment of immigrants, including many
women and children who are being detained in overcrowded and dangerous facilities at the border. “The condition of truth is always to allow suffering to speak,” West said during a roughly 6-minute soliloquy, adding that his analysis doesn’t begin and end with Trump. “There’s a fascism in all of us,” West said.
