$10M grant up for grabs on West, South Sides The Pritzker, Traubert Foundation to award the prize to ‘a highly collaborative initiative’ in historically neglected areas By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

On April 16, the Pritzker Traubert Foundation announced a new grant competition designed to pour money into areas on the city’s neglected West and/or South Sides. The competition, called the Chicago Prize, will award one $10 million grant “to a highly collaborative initiative that uses physical development to spur economic activity, strengthen civic infrastructure, and improve the safety, well-being, and economic mobility of residents,” foundation officials said. They added that the grant “emphasizes the relationship between a community’s physical environment and civic infrastructure—the environment that shapes and sustains a community.” The Chicago Prize will be awarded next spring. Any organization “whose experience aligns with these guidelines are encouraged to visit ChicagoPrize.org to complete an assessment,” foundation officials stated. The assessment, they said, is the first step in the See CHICAGO PRIZE on page 4

Discrimination, retaliatory firing still happening since Hostess bought plant from Cloverhill By IGOR STUDENKOV Staff Reporter

On May 1, the day celebrated throughout the world as a day of workers’ rights activism, activists from Black Workers Matter and their allies gathered in front of Galewood’s Hostess Bakery, 2035 N. Narragansett Ave., to allege that the pattern of racial discrimination and retaliatory firing that happened under the plant’s previous own-

ers have continued since the current owners took over a year ago. As previously reported by Austin Weekly News, activists had complained that what was then known as Cloverhill Bakery went out of its way to avoid hiring African-Americans. When an Immigration and Customs Enforcement audit forced them to fire undocumented Hispanic workers, the black workers that were hired in their place received little training, low pay and were

more readily punished. When Aryzta LLC sold the plant to Hostess in 2018, the activists decided to give the new owners a few months to do better. During the course of the May 1 press conference, activists alleged that the plant still employs “racist and abusive” managers, including some that were fired by Aryzta. They also said that two workers were fired

Bill to legalize recreational marijuana coming soon

Lawmakers say the measure could be approved by end of May By REBECCA ANZEL Capital News Illinois

SPRINGFIELD — Details of a bill to legalize adult recreational marijuana were not released in the General Assembly this past week despite earlier assurances, but one of the initiative’s primary sponsors said they will be forthcoming “very soon.” Chicago Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy said she hopes the bill would be approved by the General Assembly by the end of May. The “best case scenario” would be for the first legal sales to occur by Jan. 1, 2020. Cassidy spent about two and a half years working with state Sen. Heather Steans, a Democrat from Chicago, negotiating the pieces of a potential legalization program and learning about the other nine states that have one. In a mid-April interview with Capitol News Illinois, Steans said details of the measure would be filed when lawmakers returned from Spring Break — either April 30 or the first week of May. The language was still not available by May 3. The initiative is one being pushed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker — his proposed fiscal year 2020 budget includes $170 million in projected revenue from legalization dependent on licensing fees. Taxes collected on the sale of marijuana would not be available until sales commence in 2020 at the earliest. “It’s critically important that we don’t look at this as a magic ATM machine because it isn’t,” Cassidy said. “The reality is other states started out with crazy high taxes — 30, 40, 50 percent — and people aren’t going to break up with their dealer over that.” Instead, the forthcoming legislation will create additional licensing opportunities, she told a group of business owners at an

CHICAGO PRIZE Patient Capital from page 1 submission process. All organizations seeking to apply for the award should register on the website by 5 p.m. (Central time) on Tuesday, July 16, 2019. Cindy Moelis, the foundation’s president, said that the organization wants to address the complex challenges of systemic poverty and inequality. “We are excited and ready to partner with community leaders and put our resources— passion, experience, and capital—to work toward helping more individuals and communities in Chicago thrive,” Moelis said. “We

ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS: Rep. Kelly Cassidy, left, tells Illinois business owners that part of her plan for legalizing recreational marijuana for adults will be an increase in the number of retail licenses available. event hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and Illinois Retail Merchants Association this week. “We want to add some layers of licensing to allow for a few more entry points into the marketplace,” Cassidy said. Illinois has a medical marijuana program, launched in 2013 as a pilot program. There are two classes of licenses that operate for its patients — dispensaries, which are the retailers, and cultivation centers, which are the growers, processors, distributors and transporters. Cassidy said there are 55 dispensaries in the state, so if recreational marijuana use becomes legal, Illinois will need to grant additional retail licenses. “I don’t like thinking about what January

1, 2020 would look like with 55 retail outlets,” she said. “That will ramp up more quickly than some of the other categories.” The forthcoming legislation will include a new license for a “craft-grow, smaller-footprint” cultivation center — one that would be 3,000 to 12,000 square feet of canopy space. The larger cultivation centers in Illinois currently can be up to 100,000 square feet of canopy space. Cassidy said her “vision” would be for these smaller-grow operations to be housed in “some of these shuttered manufacturing districts that we see around the state.” The bill will also create a processor license as well as a transport license, Cassidy said. Legalizing recreational marijuana is important for Illinois, she added, because resi-

dents are already using the drug and law enforcement, legislators and other officials are not “equipping ourselves to deal with it well.” “All of these things that we talk about, whether it’s a workplace issue, or a driving issue, or pick-one-and-go-with-it, it’s happening today,” Cassidy said. “This will actually allow us to take this product out of the shadows, ensure that the product that the people are buying is tested and regulated and packaged safely and securely and sold not by the dude on my corner.” Advocates for the bill, including Pritzker, have also focused on coupling the legislation with criminal justice reforms for persons that were convicted of marijuana-related crimes. HOSTESS PROTEST Looking for justice from page 1 under flimsy pretexts for union organization and trying to bring abuses to light. Black Workers Mattered insisted that, unless Hostess, at the very least, rehires those workers, they will push back through protests and legal action. During the May 1 conference, Black Workers Matter members were joined by the Westside Health Authority’s Good Neighbors Campaign, the Northwest Austin Council and the Coalition Against Segregation of Employees. Anthony Stewart, the co-founder of Black Workers Matter, alleged that HR for Hostess retaliated against workers Kymani Hill and Adekunle Cole for speaking out against abuses committed by their higherups. Steven Robinson, the director of the Northwest Austin Community Council, said that Hostess refused to do anti-bias trainings run by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but they promised to do better. “We got other plants in the neighborhood [to do it],” Robinson said. “You don’t hear about [the kind of misconduct alleged at the Hostess plant], so it can be done. This has been going on for a long time [at the bakery].

It’s deep-rooted in this company. It’s going to take a big commitment to change it.” Hill said that he and the other workers who worked at both Hostess’ Galewood and Cicero bakeries were fired on “trumped-up charges” for trying to organize workers. “I was fired for dropping a wrapper in a break room,” he said. “Can you believe that?” Hill said that his termination happened about six months ago. Although the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Hostess retaliated against him, the hearing to decide on the recourse — whether it be rehiring or financial compensation — won’t be decided on until July 22. In the meantime, Hill said he hasn’t been able to find a job. Cole, who worked at the Cloverhill plant as a sanitation worker for the past three years, said he and the other workers complained about not getting proper safety equipment. They also wanted their higher-ups to fire a supervisor who allegedly mistreated them. “[A month later], in March, the supervisor accused me of threatening him,” Cole said. “I was fired.” He said that even though there were two other people in the room at the time of the alleged confrontation — Ishmael Hunt, the first shift supervisor, and Veronica Tucker, the Local 30 labor union steward — neither of them were interviewed. Cole added that while he filed a grievance through his union, “they didn’t do nothing.” He said that, while he is looking for work, he is afraid to use Hostess as a reference, given

their stated reasons for firing him. Peter Gunn, of the Good Neighbor Campaign, said that there have been cases of business owners threatening to close altogether when labor issues are brought up, but they won’t be scared off so easily. “Look at any corner in Austin. We buy your products,” Gunn said. ‘We say to Hostess, ‘We will stand up to your discrimination and we will stand up to your retaliation.’” Christopher Williams, an attorney with Workers’ Law Office who is representing Stewart in an ongoing lawsuit against Arita over its discriminatory practices while they owned the bakery, said that he filed a complaint with Illinois Department of Human Rights alleging a pattern of discrimination against African-Americans in retaliation against lawful labor organizing. He also mentioned that he and his clients are preparing additional charges to bring to the National Labor Relations Board. “Unfortunately, Hostess has not done the work to train its supervisors, to train its workforce, to hire more African-American

supervisors and workers,” Williams said. “While there are more African-American employees [now], they are not being treated fairly.” Arnold Brown, a manager with Hostess, met activists at the entrance of the plant. He suggested that the workers call Matt Hall, Hostess’s vice president of human resources, when they demanded that Hill and Cole be rehired. “I’m not disagreeing with anything you’re saying,” Brown said. “I’m not the boss. He’s the boss.” When Stewart called Hall, the vice president said that he should talk to Brown, the manager. “He said that they already made the decision,” Stewart commented. “This is the wrong decision.” The activists said that they would continue the protests until Hill and Cole are rehired. “We are all united and we will continue to fight for justice,” Robinson said CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

Will DOEA get our 40 acres and a mule?

F

or the majority of black people who are the “descendants of enslaved Africans” (DOEA), we have always been well aware that our recently freed ancestors were promised 40 acres and a mule — which they never got. Ever since, the issue of reparations has gathered energy, so much so that the presidential hopefuls for the 2020 elections have made it one of the pressing issues being discussed. What would reparations look like, coming 155 years after the end of slavery? It will also have to take into account the 100 years of Jim Crow laws that followed slavery because, unlike any other group that has come to America, DOEA have always been systematically oppressed at every level of government. We had to fight to be accepted as citizens, to get the right to vote, and to have the same equal opportunities as every other American. The question of reparations should be at the forefront of questions asked of any candidate running to be president. Where do they stand? If they are in support, what is their vision of reparations. If they don’t support it, why? For many of us who are DOEA, we know all the questions to ask. But if the shoe is put on the other foot and we are asked questions, are we prepared to answer them? Specifically, could they name that enslaved ancestor who was freed in 1865? Genealogy has always been important. For the majority of black people, unless we take a DNA test, we have no clue from what part of Africa our ancestors originated. We don’t know their names. We don’t know their stories. The miniseries Roots in the 1970s

became the encouragement for black people to start looking up and discovering their ancestors. I am blessed in that my family’s history has always been available. So I can trace it back to around 1825 when my great-great-grandfather, Samuel Gains, was born in Kentucky. I’ve yet to do one of those ancestry tests, but it’s on my bucket list. I am a supporter of DOEA reparations. But I don’t want the government to give me money. I just don’t want to have to pay any money to it. Let me have about 25 years of not paying any kind of taxes. Income taxes, property taxes, car registration, city stickers, utilities taxes, etc. I don’t want to pay the plethora of taxes that are placed on me for, say, 25 years. Even at my age, 65, such a plan would give me the ability to establish wealth that can be passed down to future generations. Reparations is on the table. I suggest we all be prepared with ideas as to set that table.

Austin book giveaway promotes literacy

By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

As rain poured down by the bucketful outside of the Austin branch library, 5615 W. Race Ave., on April 30, volunteers and staff of A House in Austin nonprofit wondered if anyone would come to their Bagels and Books children’s book giveaway. Half an hour after the giveaway started, only a handful of people showed up. But even as the rain continued, more and more families started trickling in. Residents stopped by to grab books not just for their kids, but for friends’ and relatives’ kids. The volunteers were on hand to help them find the books that would be best for the kids’ ages. Many families brought their kids along and those kids happily hung around and read. A House in Austin, which operates only a block east of the library, organized the event in order to promote literacy and get the word out about their activity and events. The volunteers came from the Chicago branch of Neuberger Berman, a New York City-based employee-owned asset management company. Rachel Rettberg, A House in Austin’s executive director, said that they are considering doing another book giveaway this summer, when, she hopes, the weather will be more agreeable. A House in Austin was founded in 2016 by Erica and Bret Hilgart, an Oak Park couple. Erica Hilgart used to work as a Chicago Public Schools teacher and when she became a mother, she realized that there was a disparity in terms of resources parents had in Oak Park and Austin. Hilgart started organizing free classes and workshops for Austin families. The couple bought a literal house in Austin, near the intersection of Race and Pine streets, to serve as the organiza-

When the renovations are completed, they will include classrooms for kids and parents, as well as therapy rooms and a library. As Hilgart previously told this newspaper, the idea is to create a space where Austin families can get access to resources and programs, as well a space where they can relax and feel safe. In February, Hilgart handed over the reins of her organization to Rettberg. She said that she felt that, in order for A House in Austin to grow as a non-profit, it needed an experienced, full-time executive director. And Rettberg, who previously served as CEO of Oak Park’s Wonder Works Children’s Museum, fit the bill, Hilgart said. But the co-founder still helps out as a “super-volunteer,”

Rettberg said. Rettberg explained that the interior renovations are still a work in progress. The city of Chicago still needs to issue the necessary permits. And while a significant portion of the funds necessary to complete the renovations and repairs has been raised, she said, the organization still needs to raise the balance, which they plan to do once the permits have been secured. The book happened because of Jen Laird, Hilgart’s friend since college and one of A House in Austin’s long-time volunteers. Laird works at the Chicago office of Neuberger Berman. Drew Arneth, the company’s senior vice president and one of the volunteers who helped with the book giveaway, said that every year, Chicago office employees take the time out of their day to volunteer for a nonprofit that’s meaningful to one of the employees. Laird suggested A House in Austin. “I want to continue to do more with them, because I believe in what they’re doing in the community,” Laird said. “I like that it’s bringing families together and giving them a safe space to spend time with [their] children.” The volunteers filled three tables with books from a wide range of genres. While some books were aimed toward preschool kids, others were targeted to elementary school children. There were no limits on how many books each family could take, and Neuberger Berman volunteers were on hand to help the families find the books that were age-appropriate for their kids. Families were also free to get coffee, bagels and pastries. Monica Smith was one of the parents who came in after the half-hour mark with one of her daughters. “I just want my daughter to do well at reading,” Smith said. “Tonight, she will have a new book to read.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

Black and Brown networking event open to West Side youth ‘Black and Brown Faces in White Spaces’ to take place May 11 By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Naomi Coke, 18, and Aaliyah Brown, 17, have learned to master the acrobatics of growing up young, black and female in a predominantly white environment. The Oak Park and River Forest High School seniors, both members of the after school club Students Advocating for Equity (SAFE), have had to maneuver a complex psychological landscape. When she was young, Coke said, she was extremely shy before an adolescence spent vying for affirmation in a predominantly white environment forced her out of her shell. “My time at OPRF has taught me to go for what I believe and advocate for myself, and how to deal with whiteness,” she said. Brown said her experience with SAFE “helped me to grow into myself and to advocate for the equity issues I’m passionate about.” But that self-determination and advocacy among black women can be translated as threatening and aggressive by some whites,

they said. “One day, SAFE students had to present the dress code to members of faculty and this one teacher was telling SAFE students that a lot of other teachers were coming up to her, saying they’re really rude and aggressive,” Coke said. “Those SAFE members who were presenting didn’t know they were being perceived that way.” Coke conceded that one go-to mechanism for coping can be effective, albeit somewhat tiring. “While I don’t have to code-switch as much as other black people do, because I grew up in Oak Park, I do feel like I code-switch nonetheless; just differently,” Coke said. “I feminize my voice and try to talk higher. I try to make myself seem more girly and less threatening. I smile more. … I need to stop doing that.” Coke and Brown are planning to hold a networking event for female students of color that they’ve dubbed “Black and Brown Faces in White Spaces,” which will allow young minority women to safely discuss the challenges of, and learn tools for coping in, white (particularly professional) environments. “We’ll have different workshops on topics like public speaking skills, business attire and the importance of networking,” Brown said. “At the end, we’ll have a panel discussion and people will be able to ask questions,

feed off each other and grow in that space.” The event, which the two students are planning in collaboration with OPRF Board President Jackie Moore, will take place on May 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at OPRF High School, 201 N. Coke and Brown said they’ve invited black and brown female high school and college students across the Chicago area, including Austin and other West Side areas, to join them. “The whole premise of this event is cen-

West Side police launch new youth baseball conference Chicago West Side Police and Youth Sports Conference result of police collaborating with churches, nonprofits By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

The number of West Side police-sponsored baseball teams is tripling this summer and join gin under a single umbrella — the new Chicago Westside Police and Youth Sports Conference. Building on the foundation of the existing police-sponsored youth baseball teams in Ben Franklin Park in North Lawndale and Columbus Park in Austin, the conference is launching new teams in Garfield Park, West Humboldt Park’s Kells Park and Austin’s La Folette Park and Moore Park. Each team will be sponsored by the local police district, as well as by local churches and community nonprofits. The teams are open to kids in grades third through eighth and are free to join. The conference officially kicked off on May 1 during a press conference at Franklin Park fieldhouse, 4320 W. 15th St. The officials in attendance described the conference as a way to make a positive impact on the community, provide a safe and healthy environment for kids and their families and build positive relationships. Sgt. Jermaine Harris, who has been the main driving force behind the conference, said that for officers dealing with trauma, youth baseball provides a positive outlet and reminds them what they are fighting for. The conference is the collaboration between the 10th, 11th, 15th and 25th police districts. Each baseball team will have up to 20 players, two coaches and the support of at least one church and one nonprofit. The Garfield Park team, for example, is being sponsored by Breakthrough Urban Ministries. As of the May 1 press conference, a total of 35 law enforcement organizations, churches, sports teams and community organizations officially signed on. And kids will do more than play baseball. According to the handout, they will be taught about violence reduction, restorative justice practices, nutritional counseling, tu-

We practice what it means to collaborate.” Harris lives in North Lawndale and serves in the 15th District. He said that officers experience considerable stress on the job. Around 10 years ago, he got involved with Garfield Park Little League baseball. The experience helped him deal with stress and served as a positive reminder why he and other officers “are out there, doing the things we do.” “Over time, they became my therapy, that refreshing light,” Harris said. “The kind of experience I had, I want to replicate it, I want to see more officers have this experience.” He approached Ald. Michael Scott (24th), who enthusiastically got on board. “This is something that should the light

upon the West Side,” the alderman said during the press conference. Ernest Cato, the 15th District commander, said that the conference will teach important skills and build character for kids who need it most. “It is important to show children that teamwork can be a positive thing,” he said. “The baseball league is going to go from Kedzie to Austin, North Avenue to Roosevelt. You know how many troubled kids there are in those borders?” Pastor Steve Epting, of Hope Community Church, said that the conference is an opportunity for the West Side faith community to have a bigger positive impact. “Churches, faith organizations, have an opportunity to be part of this process, so in partnerships with our police departments and our community organizations, it gives up an opportunity to be part of a greater thing,” he said. “If we are not part of the so-

lution, we are part of the problem.” Treyshon Patterson, a fifth-grader from Legacy Character School in North Lawndale, said that he has benefited from playing on the Franklin Park Little League baseball team for the past two years. Patterson said that, not only did he learn how to play, but he learned how to work hard and how to lose. “[I look forward to having fun and, if I lose, I might be mad about it, but at the same time, I found out that you win some, you lose some,” he said. Charles Anderson, the principal of Michelle Clark High School, said that students from the school will serve as junior coaches for the teams. According to the conference’s website, the registration closes on May 12 at 6 p.m. For more information about the conference, including how to register, visit www. chicagowestsidesports.org. A natural gamer makes his money where his heart is

West Side resident Kevin Fair, owner of I Play Games, wants young people to know of the career possibilities in the gaming industry By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

After Kevin Fair, a native of Chicago’s South Side and current East Garfield Park resident, graduated from college, he did what was expected of him — he got a steady job as an accountant for a company in the Loop. But he wasn’t happy. “I started thinking about what I wanted to do in life, what would be fun to do, but would also be a career,” Fair recalled. He knew he loved playing video games and, since nobody was going to pay him for it, he reasoned, he just had to create an opportunity that would. So, in 2009, Fair launched I Play Games, a company that organizes video game tournaments for companies and public organizations. Although he is proud of his growing business, he said that the most rewarding part is getting a chance to talk to teens in low-income, majority-black neighborhoods. This gives him the opportunity to tell teens that they, too, can think outside the box and create their own opportunities. Growing up, Fair said, he saw factories that provided jobs in his neighborhood for generations. Those factories, however, started closing — one by one. His family advised him that he might want to study computers, since no matter how many jobs cut by automation, there will always be a need for someone to maintain machines. Fair said that he got the idea for I Play Games in 2009, when he organized a Street Fighter IV fighting video game tournament “for a very small group of people at a venue that wasn’t bigger than 1,000 square feet.” He started to realize that there might be an opportunity for doing something like this on a larger scale. “Hobby conventions” such as Anime Central and the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo have been growing and attracting larger crowds. Fair also noticed that many companies started organizing video game tournaments as part of their promotions. For example, breweries may hold tournaments at launch parties for new beers. Someone who had high-quality equipment, the professional experience running events and the knowledge of the ins and outs of video games would be in demand. Fair started at fan conventions before branching out into corporate and charity events, such as the Greater Chicago Food Depository food drive. His business grew to the point where he does around 35 to 40 shows a year. Fair said he hires crews to help run events, but other than that, it’s largely a one-person operation. “It is really important that I get to demonstrate the ability to think of a profession, think of the void, and exactly how I can fill that void with something that was a hobby of mine and I professionalized it,” Fair said. “I always try to impress upon the youth that I create businesses out of the box, something I can create for myself.” Fair said that he was taught that, in order to make money,

KEVIN FAIR/Facebook

GAMING CONNECTIONS: Kevin Fair (pictured above to the right of the late comic book writer Stan Lee), has made a career out of his passion for video games. he should have a good job. Many millennials, however, weren’t taught how to be entrepreneurs and create their own opportunities, he said. He hopes that he will be able to encourage teens to think about that. Fair also wants them to look at opportunities to find ways to make money by playing video games. E-sports, which allow gamers to make money in video game tournaments, are growing in popularity. More recently, many people have been able to make money by playing video games on online streaming services through viewer donations and sponsorships. But Fair said getting into those fields isn’t easy. ‘The access to good and quality equipment is very much a financial barrier for kids,” he said. “The more work I do with students of color and students within impoverished neighborhoods, the more I realize that they love playing games, but they don’t have access to good computers.” Fair used to think that the growth of smartphone and tablets would remove those barriers, but it hasn’t been the case. In order to play professionally, he said, one needs to

have access to computers that can process high-quality video gaming graphics without lag. Good processing power and good connections are also important for streaming. That said, Fair said he hopes that, by showing what video game tournaments could be like and what kind of equipment is out there, he can encourage teens to at least think about the possibilities that are out there, to let them know that this is something they can pursue. Fair has done events all over the city, and the West Side is no exception. He took part in comedian and West Side native Hannibal Burres’s Melvina Masterminds pop-up event last month and he has visited Michelle Clark High School several times. He said that he decided to move to East Garfield Park, because it would make it easier for him to travel all over Chicago. And he was conscious of the fact that West Side in general hasn’t seen much investment in recent decades. “I felt I had an opportunity in a space of Chicago where most people just go, ‘Oh well, the West Side has bad parts,’” Fair said. “I felt I had an opportunity to grow and do something that’s kind of cool. I’m pretty close to the Illinois Medical District, and it provides me great access, so that I’m able to do events at schools. It’s also near venues where I host events. So, I really enjoy being here.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com
