Death of a native son Fifty years ago, Fred Hampton’s assassination rocked his suburban hometown to its core By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Fifty years ago today — Dec. 4, 1969 — Black Panther leader and Maywood native Fred Hampton was assassinated during an early-morning police raid on his apartment, located on the West Side at 2337 W. Monroe. He was 21 years old. Articles published in the Proviso Herald at the time give some indication of how Hampton’s hometown, west suburban Maywood, reacted to the death of its most controversial resident. In a testament to the power of local journalism, Herald reporters Paul Sassone and Carol Swatos wrote about how getting to know the fiery young man (in Swatos’ case, even driving him home from a meeting once) tempered their perspective on Hampton personally and on the issues that he was so passionate about — no easy feat for white people at the time, considering the power of propaganda leveraged in service to the myth that the racism blacks were complaining about was not real, or at least not so bad that black people should be up in arms about it. That myth was held up by both the government and the press. For instance, less than a month before Hampton’s death, the Chicago Tribune penned an editorial, “No Quarter for Wild Beasts,” which lambasted the Black Panthers’ role in a shootout with law enforcement that left a policeman and a Panther dead, and seven other policemen

The paper called the Panthers “murderous fanatics, who have been persuaded that they have a right to shoot and kill policemen” before making the reckless argument that the Panthers weren’t even worthy of due process. The Black Panthers “should be kept under constant surveillance,” the paper wrote. “They have declared war on society. They therefore have forfeited the right to considerations ordinary violators of the law might

claim.” In the Dec. 11, 1969 Proviso Herald, Sassone recalled his only time meeting Hampton in the flesh (“my first, and last, look at the man whose name had become synonymous with black radicalism in the Chicago area”). The meeting, Hampton’s “last speaking engagement in Proviso,” was held in October 1969, at First Baptist Church in Melrose Park, where Hampton would be memorialized just two months later. “Look, I’m 21,” Sassone recalled Hampton saying at the meeting, which was held to discuss racism in the suburbs. “If you think it has all happened in 21 years and that I did it, then you should take me out and shoot me. But you and I know that these situations have been around for a long time.”

Captivated by Hampton’s charisma and his intelligence, Sassone was convinced that “the ‘power structure’ was afraid of him for the wrong reasons. Hampton was no hoodlum or gangster. He was an intelligent and highly articulate revolutionary. That is, he didn’t like the way America was being run and wanted a change, using any means necessary.” During that last public meeting, Hampton seemed to preempt the claims made in the incendiary editorial the Tribune would publish the next month. “We have a right to live,” Hampton said. “If you shoot at me, I shoot at you. If I have to be non-violent in a situation, I’m not going

Chicago Municipal Employee Credit Union moves to 6612 W. North Ave. By IGOR STUNDENKOV Contributing Reporter

On Nov. 8, the Chicago Municipal Employees Credit Union’s West Side branch officially completed its move from east end of Austin, at 4909 W. Division St., to a shopping strip in Galewood, at 6612 W. North Ave. The credit union offers services similar to a bank, except members don’t need to put in as much money up front, and neither credit history nor income factor into the applications. In addition, members get a share of the profits, and each member can run for and vote for the credit union’s governing board. The credit union is primarily geared toward city and county government employees, but the membership is also open to employees of certain private organizations and certain residents. The state has since allowed the credit union to expand eligibility to the entire city and most of the suburban Cook County. According to the credit union’s newsletter, a major reason for the move was to be in a better location to provide services to the Northwest Side and the suburbs. The credit union was originally founded in 1926 by city of Chicago employees as a way to be able to save and borrow money while retaining control of the institution’s operations. Since then, the membership eligibility requirements expanded to include employees of the Chicago Park District, Chicago Housing Authority, Public Building Commission, Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago systems, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Public Libraries, Chicago Transit Authority and Metra employees who live in Cook County. In 2004, the Chicago Municipal Employees Credit Union took over operations from the Austin/West Garfield Federal Credit Union, a credit union started in late 1980s by the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions and the Woodstock Institute of Chicago. The merger allowed the municipal credit union to offer its services to regular residents for the first time, but only if they lived, worked or worshiped in the Austin and West Garfield Park community areas. But in 2017, the credit union got permission to expand its services to most of Cook County, which means that all West Side residents can now join the credit union. Aside from the aforementioned eligibility requirements, the barrier of entry is relatively low. Applicants would need to pay $35, which would cover the $25 cost of a share

and a $10 processing fee. The credit union offers services similar to a regular bank, including checking and savings accounts, mortgages, vehicle purchase loans, lines of credit, private student loans and personal loans. But the number of ATMs where members can take out cash is limited and there are only three branches in total— one in the Loop, one on the South Side and one on the West Side. All branches are only open on weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Chris McAuliffe, a spokesman for the credit union, did not respond to e-mails and calls seeking comment by deadline. The credit union’s fall 2019 newsletter states that the move to Galewood “renews our commitment to the north/northwest side of the City of Chicago and provides access to new suburban areas such as Oak Park, River Forest, Elmwood Park and Forest Park.” In a statement on her official Facebook page, Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin praised the credit union for its service and touted the opening as a benefit to the community. She noted that the new branch was larger than the Division Street location. “My office is committed to partnering with all banks that are committed to investing monies in all the communities around Chicago,’ she stated. “It was great to be part of their 93 years serving Chicago residents.”

VIEW points Missing loved ones during the holidays

have been blessed and fortunate not to have a lot of deaths in my family. I know of people who have obituaries stacked in their cars from attending so many funerals, especially of young people. However, the circle of life is a non-stop ending and beginning. This year for my family, the reality of death hit us multiple times. We are an aging group, but we still expect that people won’t leave us for another 20 years. The expectation is just that — an expectation. The reality is that death did come and visit my family beginning this past February. My cousin Charles passed away at age 77. He was the son of my mother’s oldest brother. He represented the hopes and dreams of the entire family. When he graduated from college back in the 1960s, the entire family turned out to see and celebrate. Charles’ death was sudden and unexpected. So it hit me like a ton of bricks. Although he was cremated, the memorial service was packed to the brim. So many people loved him. Co-workers respected him beyond belief. And he left behind his beloved wife Mattie, the two of whom have always represented to me what marriage should be. It was about 20 years ago that I attended an event and Mattie had had surgery on her foot. As she slowly struggled to climb a tall staircase, Charles stood behind her with his arms wide open. He wanted everyone to know that if his wife should fall, he was there to catch her. That beautiful image will be with me forever. In July, I lost my beloved Aunt Vivian. At 101, hers are the footsteps I plan to follow. Up until she was 99, she was able to live pretty much independently in an assisted living building. Even when she was put into a true nursing home-type environment, she was still stoic. When she turned 100, and I told

her to say cheese, she listed about 20 different varieties. Her mind stayed sharp. We were able to celebrate her 101st birthday this past March. We could see that, mentally, she was not the same person she had been a year ago. So when she passed, although it was news I didn’t want to hear, I knew she had lived a good life. They say death comes in threes. So I didn’t want to contemplate who the third death would be. When I learned of a distant cousin who had passed of old age, I thought that would be the third. But it turns out death number three was even closer. My cousin David and I were pseudo-twins all our lives. We were born two days apart, I the older. Growing up, the thrill of seeing David was always pure joy. Although he was on the South Side and I was on the North Side and we saw each other maybe once or twice a year, it didn’t matter. It was as if no time had passed. We were both strong-willed, so we would often butt heads. But we were still cousins. So when I learned he had had a stroke that basically left him incapacitated, I immediately went to the hospital. Prior to the stroke, he had suffered from a number of illnesses. And though he couldn’t speak and was in a coma, I could still feel and tell he was fighting to stay. But the will of God won and the third death to hit my family happened. David’s passing just before Thanksgiving is making this holiday season one in which I and the rest of my family will be doing a lot of reflecting. To others who have lost loved ones and need to make it through the holiday season without them, whether it be the first time or not, seek help from clergy, other family members and friends.

If the pigs don’t like guns, let’s throw all the guns in the country away.” Sassone wrote that Hampton also spoke out against systemic injustice at that October meeting. “As long as one person is poor, we all are,” Hampton said. “We’ve had too many wars on poverty, let’s have some more wars on the rich!”

Nixon’s gravest crime In Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky explain the hidden bias of corporate media outlets like the Tribune and the propaganda model that governs their coverage of events like Hampton’s assassination, which Chomsky has called “the gravest domestic crime of the Nixon administration.” In their book, Herman and Chomsky explain that “the major scandal of Watergate as portrayed in the mainstream press was that the Nixon administration sent a collection of petty criminals to break into the Democratic party headquarters, for reasons that remain obscure,” the authors write. “The Democratic party represents powerful domestic interests, solidly based in the business community.” The very same considerations the authors give the Socialist Workers Party can be extended to the Black Panther Party, which had been subject since its inception to government-sanctioned surveillance, police intimidation, unlawful break-ins of its offices across the country and other violations that are worse by degrees of magnitude than any crimes uncovered during the Watergate hearings. The Panthers represented “no powerful interests,” so the scandal that was the FBI’s complicity in Hampton’s assassination did not receive the robust national coverage given to “Nixon’s ‘enemies list,’ which identified powerful people who were denigrated in private but suffered no consequences.” Herman and Chomsky wrote that “powerful groups are capable of defending themselves, not surprisingly; and by media standards, it is a scandal when their position and rights are threatened. By contrast, as long as illegalities and violations of democratic substance are confined to marginal groups or distant victims of U.S. military attack, or result in a diffused cost imposed on the general population, media opposition is muted or absent altogether. “This is why Nixon could go so far, lulled into a false sense of security precisely because the watchdog only barked when he began to threaten the privileged,” they wrote. In her article published in the Dec. 11, 1969 Herald, Swatos admitted her own ignorance

of the scandal of systemic racism at Proviso East — a scandal that she slowly understood could be real only after meeting Hampton and another student, Ethlyn Giddons, at a meeting of the Maywood Human Relations Commissions in the fall of 1967. “I knew their names,” Swatos wrote. “They both figured in recent youth outbreaks in Maywood — rock-throwing, window smashing protests, because Maywood had no pool. They were angry. I guess because our paper covered the protests, they wanted to make pretty sure we knew the pool wasn’t their only gripe. “Aided by Ethlyn, Fred talked fast. Maybe he figured I wouldn’t listen to what at that time sounded like a preposterous story,” Swatos recalled. “‘There’s something rotten in Proviso East,’ they were telling me, and I shuddered.” Swatos said if she had not “heard an earlier suspicion about East, I might have nicely excused myself from the discussion and left,” particularly considering that the source of these claims was Fred Hampton, someone who had a reputation among some as being “wild and irrational.” By the end of her article, Swatos —

shocked by Hampton’s death — was still wondering about the veracity of Hampton’s and other black radicals’ accounts of racism and injustice and black suffering. “Was he right or was I wrong?”

An outcry and a resignation On Dec. 4, around 4:30 a.m., Hampton and Panther Mark Clark were both shot dead, and four other Panthers injured, in a raid that was organized as part of the FBI’s secret and illegal counterintelligence program, COINTELPRO, which was designed to systematically destroy just about any form of effective black political empowerment not controlled by the government. The 14-man raiding unit pumped nearly 100 shots into the apartment. The Panthers did not return fire. Despite this fact, Cook County State’s Attorney Edward V. Hanrah-

nounced that “indictments charging attempted murder will be sought within a week by the state’s attorney’s office against seven alleged members of the Black Panther party who staged a wild gun battle with police early yesterday in a west side apartment.” Fortunately, the police made the mistake of leaving the crime scene unsecured and between Dec. 4 and 11, an estimated 25,000 people walked through Hampton’s apartment to see the truth for themselves. Among those visitors were Maywood trustees and the village’s then-mayor Leonard Chabala. After the visit, Chabala, three trustees and members of the Maywood Commission on Human Relations “issued a statement for murder charges to be filed against the 14 State’s Attorney’s police involved in the fatal ‘shootout’ at 2337 W. Monroe, Chicago,” according to a Dec. 11, 1969 article that Sassone wrote. The statement called Hampton’s death “‘a blatant act of legitimized murder,’ and likened the police tactics to Hitler’s Nazis,” the Herald reported. Maywood Trustee Tom Strieter, a white man, even went on TV to condemn the murder, saying that it “strips all credibility from law enforcement. In the context of other acts

against militant blacks in recent months, it suggests an official policy of systematic repression.” After the village officials’ statement, Maywood’s acting police chief at the time, Wilbert Samuels — likely channeling the anger of many whites in the village at the time that their representatives were siding with black militants against the police — resigned. “The chief said he considered the statement we made offensive,” Rev. Thomas Strieter, the Maywood trustee, told the Herald. “Apparently he thought we were critical of all police, which is not true.” Strieter said he and his colleagues on the village board toured the Hampton apartment for more than an hour. “I’m not a ballistics expert, but we could not find any evidence that the apartment’s occupants were shooting,” he said. “We could not find any shotgun traces, and it appears that all shots came from the police. All this raises reasonable doubts that call for an investigation.” Those demands for an investigation by Strieter and many others would culminate in the May 1973 report by the Commission of Inquiry Into the Black Panthers and Police, which described the raid as a criminal and

unconstitutional “search and destroy” mission and that there was sufficient evidence to believe that Hampton was murdered and that he was drugged before the raid by an FBI informant. Arnold M. Hilpert, a pastor, also visited the apartment and wrote a letter to the Proviso Herald praising the Maywood board for demanding a probe into Hampton’s death. In the letter, published in the Dec. 25, 1969 Herald, the pastor wrote that, “as one who was immediately impressed by the public contradictions in this case, I personally visited the bloody death scene on the same day as these officials. I went with the prejudice that the Panthers probably overstated their case. I left, after four studies of the apartment, with the wonderment that not all the Panthers were killed. “The most stunning fact to me is the most obvious to all: why the officials responsible allowed exhibit A evidence, the bullet-riddled apartment, to become a public open house with guided tours by the Panthers?” the pastor wrote, adding that he hoped “the Panther Party is wrong about their analysis of our law enforcement agencies, but what my own eyes saw can only make their call for revolution more credible to other American

youth.” Some Maywood residents, including members of the Maywood Human Relations Commission and the village board, were prompted to write a joint letter to the editor published in the Dec. 11 Herald, in which they alluded to Nazi Germany again. “The fearful response of the ‘silent majority,’ whose reaction that this brutality was good and beneficial since Fred Hampton had radical political beliefs is a frightening reincarnation of the response of citizens in early Nazi Germany to Hitler’s Jewish genocide,” they wrote. Edgar L. Hiestand Jr., a minister at Neighborhood Methodist Church in Maywood, also wrote a letter to the Proviso Herald, published Dec. 11. Hiestand called Hampton’s death “a three-fold tragedy,” with the greatest tragedy being “that all of us have allowed wrongs to accumulate. “We’ve condoned a snails-pace progress in jobs, housing, education and justice in all facets of America’s life,” Hiestand wrote. “We’ve acquiesced in the rationalization of violence and the muffling of dissent, whether in Pinkville or W. A brief, but revolutionary life Aug. 30, 1948 - Frederick Allen Hampton is born in the Chicago area, the youngest of Francis Allen and Iberia Hampton’s three children. His siblings are Bill Hampton and Delores “Dee Dee” Hampton. Aug. 28, 1955 - On Aug. 28, Emmett Louis Till, the Hampton family’s neighbor for a time when they lived in Argo, Ill., is lynched while visiting relatives in Money, Miss. “I couldn’t stand going to his funeral and seeing him like that,” Hampton’s mother, Iberia, says of the little boy she knew as “Bobo.” “I wanted to remember him as the active and saucy kid I babysat for.” 1958 | The Hampton family moves to Maywood, where Fred attends Irving Elementary School. At Irving, Hampton is the captain of the patrol boys, a unit responsible for controlling traffic and helping students cross the streets. Hampton also draws black and white classmates into his “morning homework sessions” before school. At 14, Hampton organizes a student chapter of the Maywood NAACP, which grows to 700 members. 1962 - 1966 - Hampton is an active student at Proviso East High School in Maywood. That case was pending at Hampton’s death.” July 10, 1968 - Hampton is accused of robbery and beating an ice cream truck driver in the playground of Irving Elementary School in Maywood. The driver, Nelson T. Suitt, 20, testifies that Hampton $71 worth of merchandise was taken from his truck “by a group of youths while Hampton entered the cab of the vehicle and beat and choked him. Hampton denied the charge, maintaining he did not arrive at the playground until after the truck had been looted.” He is released on $4,000 bond. Not long after he’s accused of robbery, Hampton breaks from the NAACP and joins the Chicago Black Panther Party, in large part due to his encounter with Lennie Eggleston, a Black Panther Party member who was on tour in Chicago for the party. TIMELINE Full of vigor from page 9 “Joan Elbert, a friend of Hampton’s, was asked by Karl Lutze, the director of the Lutheran Human Relations Association, to house Eggleston. After being somewhat intimidated by Lennie, Joan asked Fred to come over and speak with him. This was the first Black Panther that the Elberts (Ted and Joan) and Fred had ever met.” December 1968 - “Filmmaker Mike Gray and members of the Film Group meet Fred Hampton and decide to make him the subject of a documentary.” The following spring, the Film Group “begins to follow Hampton around, chronicling his speeches and his efforts to help people of Chicago’s South Side … Gray and his group capture the Panthers serving breakfast and milk to children, which appears in ‘The Murder of Fred Hampton.’” Dec. 18, 1968 - The Chicago Black Panthers open an office at 2350 W. Madison St., shortly after organizing the Illinois chapter, which “quickly becomes the largest and most powerful chapter of the Black Panthers. Hampton is named chairman of the Chicago Black Panthers.” Hampton is now “expressly targeted by the Chicago FBI office under the command of the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Marlin Johnson. Days after the office opens, Johnson’s “Racial Matters Squad” directs one of its operatives, William O’Neal, to join the Party. O’Neal eventually becomes the party’s security chief and Hampton’s bodyguard. The Illinois Panthers negotiate with various street gangs like the Vice Lords and Blackstone Rangers in an attempt to persuade them “to give up their violent ‘gangbanging,’ and to focus instead on the true enemy — the government and the police.” The party also builds the “original Rainbow Coalition which united the Panthers, the Puerto Rican Young Lords Organization, the Young Patriots, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and, for a time, certain Black street gangs.”

The chapter also opens a Breakfast for Children Program, which feeds hundreds of children before school. April 1969 - Hampton is convicted of the alleged ice cream truck robbery and assault. The trial judge tells him that he’ll get probation. May 1969 - Hampton is sent to state prison in downstate Menard while waiting to go to trial for the robbery and assault. Hampton’s bond was denied after the Black Panther leader stated under oath during a presentencing hearing that he is an advocate for armed revolution in the United States. July 16, 1969 - Chicago police shoot and kill Black Panther member Larry Roberson. July 31, 1969 - Chicago police attack the Panther’s West Side office and a shootout ensues. The police ransack the offices, and also destroy Black Panther Party newspapers and food for the breakfast program. August 1969 The Illinois Supreme Court grants Hampton an appeal bond and he returns to Chicago “to a joyous welcome at People’s Church on South Ashland Avenue. In an inspiring and memorable speech,” Hampton tells how he “heard the ‘beat of the people,’ and was ‘high off the people’ while he was locked up in Menard.” Nov. 13, 1969 - Former Black Panther member, Spurgeon “Jake” Weinters, and two Chicago police officers are killed in a shootout on the South Side. Hampton and other Panthers eulogize Winters as “a fallen comrade, further enraging the police.” Nov. 19, 1969 - After FBI Racial Matters agent Roy Mitchell instructs O’Neal, to get him a detailed floor plan of the apartment at 2337 W. Monroe St., where Hampton and other Panthers live, O’Neal reports

back with the requested floor plan, which includes the exact location of Hampton’s bed. O’Neal also tells Mitchell that the guns in the apartment were purchased legally. Mitchell nonetheless contacts the Chicago Police Department’s Gang Intelligence Unit and Hanrahan’s assistant, Richard Jalovec, “chief of a Special Prosecutions Unit which included a semi-secrete group of police officers and prosecutors assigned to Hanrahan’s ‘War on Gangs.’” and tells them about the floor plan and the guns. The Gang Intelligence Unit plan a raid for late November, but cancel it at the last minute. They reschedule it for 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 4, to assure that Hampton and the Panthers are asleep in their beds. Nov. 26, 1969 - Hampton is sentenced “eight days before his death, to two to five years in prison for the ice cream truck robbery by Judge Sidney Jones of Circuit court.” Dec. 3, 1969 - O’Neal, the FBI plant, visits Hampton’s apartment and allegedly spikes his Kool-Aid with secobarbital, a barbiturate that induces sleep. Hampton never wakes up. Dec. 4, 1969 - The 14man raiding party is “armed with a submachine gun, semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, and handguns,” and choose not to bring “teargas, floodlights or loudspeakers.” The raiders, “led by Edward Carmody, a childhood friend of an officer killed in a shootout with the Panthers, Sgt. Daniel Groth, a shadowy figure with suspected connections to the CIA,” and James “Gloves” Davis, a black officer “who was so nicknamed because he supposedly put on gloves before he beat people up.” They burst into the front and back doors of the Chicago apartment and fire off nearly 100 shots. The Panthers who are inside never return fire. Davis kills Panther Mark Clark “with a shot through the heart.” Two people hear two shots ring out from Hampton’s bedroom. They also hear an officer say,

‘He’s good and dead now.’” Physical evidence and post-raid statements point to the strong possibility that Carmody shoots Fred twice “with a .45 caliber pistol at close range in the head while he lay unconscious in his bed.” Several other Panthers are injured during the raid. Two officers sustain minor injuries. The seven people who survive the raid are “physically abused, subjected to threats and racial epithets, and then jailed on charges of attempted murder.” At a press conference held moments after the raid, State’s Attorney Hanrahan describes a “a fierce gun battle, initiated by the ‘vicious’ and ‘criminal’ Black Panthers, and during which his raiders acted ‘reasonably’ and with ‘restraint’ — a version of events that most media outlets, including the Tribune, credulously repeat. May 14, 1970 - The Maywood village board votes to name the suburb’s new swimming pool after Hampton. Maywood Mayor Leonard Chabala, who breaks the tie vote in favor of naming the pool after the slain Black Panther, is “heaped with obscenities and threatened with political extinction by many white persons in the audience of 300 that attended the meeting.” May 1973 - A report by the Commission of Inquiry Into the Black Panthers and Police describes the raid as a criminal and unconstitutional “search and destroy” mission and that there was sufficient evidence to believe that Hampton was murdered and drugged before the raid by an FBI informant.
