EDITION 300/301 JULY- AUG 2026

With summer now in full swing, beaches are filling with visitors while new residents continue to move to Manilva and establish businesses. At the same time, Mayor Mario Jiménez remains focused on improving the quality of life and security for everyone who lives in or visits the municipality. Although only a few months into his term as Mayor, Mario Jiménez has already introduced noticeable improvements compared with previous years. Higher-quality tourism is becoming increasingly evident, with visitors from many countries, particularly the UK, continuing to play a significant role. This is not intended as political promotion, but simply recognition of the visible efforts being made to enhance the area. Not everyone agrees with every decision. Some residents have criticised restrictions on loud live music and late-night noise in Puerto de la Duquesa. However, many restaurant owners, diners and nearby residents have welcomed the measures. Excessive noise and rowdy behaviour had made it difficult for restaurants to provide a pleasant dining experience, while local residents were regularly disturbed until the early hours. These changes are expected to improve both the atmosphere and the quality of visitors to the port. Another common concern is the deteriorating condition of pavements throughout Sabinillas. Cracked and broken tiles are largely the result of unsuitable materials used in previous developments. Repairing them is a major undertaking that must be completed gradually to minimise disruption and avoid harming local businesses. The Mayor continues to invite residents to submit suggestions for improving wellbeing in the municipality by emailing editor@webexpressguide.com. We will also continue highlighting the actions and initiatives introduced by Mario Jiménez since our last edition.

First shipment of humanitarian aid from Manilva to Venezuela The first shipment of humanitarian aid organized by the Venezuelan community of Manilva with the collaboration of the City Council has already departed for Venezuela, in response to the devastating earthquakes recorded last week.

16

The mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, and the councillor for Social Welfare, Laura Salazar, have highlighted the work carried out in the municipal warehouse, where this first solidarity shipment has been prepared. The shipment consists of medical care products, first aid supplies, medicines, diapers and personal hygiene items.

Manilva expands its parking areas for the summer The Infrastructure and Works and Vehicle Fleet Departments, headed by Marcos Ruiz and Laura Salazar, are finalizing the work to adapt new parking areas in different parts of the municipality with the aim of improving mobility during the summer season. The spaces are located next to Super Asia, Lidl and Pueblo Mexicano, which will facilitate parking for both residents and visitors. In addition, open areas near the beaches have been set up, in areas close to the beach bars El Olivar, Garito de Juan and Meollo Beach, as well as in Punta Chullera, among other strategic points.

Municipal cleaning workers continue their daily work The Manilva Town Council, through the Cleaning Department, headed by Gema Zotano, continues with the responsibility of redoubling efforts and keeping the municipality clean to offer the best image of our town. Furthermore, in addition to thanking citizens for their contribution to cleanliness, establishments are reminded of their obligation to maintain their terraces and sidewalks.

High Temperature Prevention Campaign The Councillor for Health, Juan Carlos Morejón, has announced the collaboration agreement reached with the Red Cross to launch a Prevention Campaign in response to the high temperatures. This initiative will take place in the morning on the Sabinillas seafront until Sunday, August 30, with a presence on alternate Sundays. Volunteers will offer information and advice on how to cope with the heat, as well as distribute water, sunscreen, and fans to residents and visitors. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of taking preventative measures during the summer months and to protect the health of the population from high temperatures.

Raising of the Manilva beaches blue trail award The mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, councillors Juan Carlos Morejón, Pilar Zúñiga, Marcos Ruiz and Laura Salazar, as well as the area directors, Carlos González and Alejandro Medina, have carried out the act of raising the flag of the Blue Trail award to the “Manilva Beaches Trail”. It should be noted that the mayor of Manilva received this distinction awarded by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education, at an event held in the Valencian municipality of Cullera. This recognition highlights the magnificent work carried out by the Environment Department of the Manilva City Council, whose responsible councillor is Pilar Zúñiga, in the recovery and enhancement of trails and paths that promote environmental education.

In effect he has done a lot more than can be listed in this one edition... We invite residents and business owners to share their thoughts, comments, and suggestions. With open dialogue and collective effort, we can support the new mayor in developing positive, lasting solutions that continue to improve the quality of life for everyone in the Manilva area. Please send us a note at editor@webexpressguide.com and we shall put it forward to the Mayor for a response.

GRILLED TAHINI ‌T AHINI HONEY CHICKEN ‌C HICKEN It’s summer now!! It’s BBQ time!! But how about something different from the usual charcoal grilled meat?

INGREDIENTS 2 LARGE LEMONS, HALVED 1/4 CUP TAHINI 2 TABLESPOONS HONEY 2 TABLESPOONS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL PLUS MORE FOR COOKING 2 POUNDS BONELESS, SKINLESS CHICKEN THIGHS (OR BREASTS) SALT 1 OR 2 SPRIGS PARSLEY OR CILANTRO LEAVES AND TENDER STEMS, GENTLY TORN OR CHOPPED SUMAC (OPTIONAL), FOR GARNISHING

INSTRUCTIONS Into a large bowl, juice 1 lemon, then whisk together with the tahini, honey and olive oil until smooth. Transfer half the mixture to a small serving bowl. Season the chicken all over with salt and add to the large bowl; toss to coat. To grill the chicken, set a grill to medium-high. (If you’d like to cook the chicken in the oven or a skillet, see Tip.) Generously oil the grates, then add the chicken and cook until the bottom is charred, 5 to 8 minutes. Use tongs to turn over the thighs and continue to grill until the chicken is cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes depending on the size of the chicken pieces; turn thighs over again if necessary. Move thighs to a cooler part of the grill if browning too quickly. Remove chicken from grill and let cool 1 to 2 minutes. Taste the reserved sauce and season as needed with salt, and loosen the consistency by adding half the lemon juice or a tablespoon of water. Squeeze the remaining lemon half over the chicken, drizzle with the sauce or serve on the side, and, if using, garnish with the parsley and sumac (optional), for garnishing.

JEDITION 300/301

SPAIN'S PROPERTY MARKET SEES A NEW WAVE OF EUROPEAN BUYERS For decades, British buyers dominated Spain's overseas property market, particularly along the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. While they remain one of the country's largest groups of foreign purchasers, the market is changing as other European buyers expand their presence.

Recent figures show that foreign buyers accounted for 18.8% of all property purchases in Spain during 2025, with more than 52,700 transactions. The shift has prompted questions about whether Brexit is finally taking its toll. The reality, however, is more nuanced. British Demand Remains Strong. British buyers have not disappeared from Spain's property market. Estate agents continue to report consistent interest from UK purchasers looking for holiday homes, retirement properties and permanent relocations.

The key change is that demand from other European countries has grown more rapidly. Rather than signalling a decline in British interest, the latest figures reflect a broader international market where several nationalities are increasing their activity. Brexit Has Changed the Buying Process

Brexit has altered how Britons buy property in Spain rather than whether they buy at all. As non-EU citizens, UK buyers must now comply with the 90-day rule for non-resident stays and face additional administrative requirements when purchasing or relocating. These changes have encouraged many buyers to spend more time researching before committing.

28

Estate agents say British clients are increasingly renting before buying, visiting several times before choosing a location, or waiting until retirement plans are confirmed. The purchasing journey has become longer and more carefully planned, but demand remains steady.

Dutch Buyers on the Rise. One of the fastest-growing groups of overseas buyers comes from the Netherlands. Several factors are driving this trend. High property prices at home have encouraged many Dutch households to look abroad for better value and more space. The country's Box 3 wealth tax has also prompted some buyers to reassess long-term financial planning. Remote working has added further momentum, allowing professionals greater flexibility over where they live. Combined with Spain's warm climate, outdoor lifestyle and lower cost of living in many areas, the country has become an increasingly attractive option for both second-home buyers and those planning a gradual relocation. Good air connections and established Dutch communities along Spain's coastline have also made the move feel more accessible.

A More Diverse Market Property professionals across the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca say today's market is far more diverse than it was a decade ago. Instead of one nationality dominating international demand, buyers now arrive from across northern and western Europe, each motivated by different economic and lifestyle factors. Agents also report that overseas buyers are better prepared than ever. Many complete extensive online research before travelling, narrowing their search to specific towns and neighbourhoods. This preparation often results in quicker decisions once they begin viewing properties. Looking Ahead Spain remains one of Europe's most desirable destinations for overseas property buyers. British purchasers continue to play a major role, even if they are no longer the fastestgrowing group. Rather than replacing one nationality with another, the market is becoming more balanced. Buyers from across Europe are responding to rising housing costs, changing tax policies, flexible working and a desire for a better quality of life. As these trends continue, Spain's property market looks set to remain firmly international, with a wider mix of buyers helping shape its future.

THE HIDDEN PRICE OF FALLING ILL ABROAD Sun-soaked beaches, city escapes and longawaited holidays are all part of the summer travel season. Yet amid the excitement of booking flights and packing suitcases, one essential purchase is often overlooked: travel insurance. For many, it feels like an unnecessary expense—until an unexpected medical emergency transforms a dream holiday into a financial nightmare.

Recent figures from Spain's insurance association, UNESPA, reveal just how costly overseas treatment can become. The organisation has recorded insurance pay-outs exceeding €113,000 for medical care in Malawi and more than €21,000 for treatment in the United States, highlighting the enormous costs that can arise when illness or injury strikes abroad

For British travellers, healthcare arrangements vary considerably depending on the destination. In Spain and Portugal, holders of a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) can access medically necessary treatment through the public healthcare system under the same conditions as local residents. However, the card has significant limitations. It does not cover private healthcare, mountain rescue, medical repatriation or many additional expenses that can accompany a serious illness.

EDITION 300/301 Those opting for private treatment can quickly face substantial bills. In Spain, a private consultation typically costs between €50 and €250, while emergency care and hospital admissions can run into hundreds—or even thousands—of euros each day. Portugal offers comparatively lower private healthcare costs, but lengthy hospital stays, diagnostic tests and specialist treatment can still leave visitors with sizeable expenses. Beyond the European Union, the financial risks increase dramatically. In destinations such as Morocco, Egypt and Turkey, travellers are generally responsible for the full cost of medical care unless protected by comprehensive insurance. Although routine consultations in Morocco may be relatively affordable, private hospitals often require payment or proof of insurance before treatment. Medical evacuation to another country can add many thousands more to an already costly situation. Nowhere illustrates the importance of insurance more starkly than the United States. Without access to subsidised healthcare, even a visit to an emergency department can result in bills running into thousands of dollars, while surgery or prolonged hospital treatment can escalate into tens of thousands. Travellers with pre-existing medical conditions face an additional challenge. Although many insurers offer cover, applicants must declare existing conditions, often resulting in higher premiums or more limited policy options. Consumer groups have long argued that this process leaves many older travellers feeling unfairly penalised simply for managing ongoing health issues. While no one plans to spend their holiday in hospital, medical emergencies cannot be predicted. Industry experts continue to stress that the cost of adequate travel insurance is almost always insignificant compared with the potentially devastating financial consequences of travelling without it.

What’sNews? MORE NEWS, LESS TRUST. For the first time, social media and video platforms have overtaken traditional news organisations as the most widely used source of news. At the same time, trust in news has fallen to its lowest level since records began. The lesson is not that people have less access to information. Quite the opposite. We have never had more information available to us. The challenge is knowing what to believe. Leadership depends on trust. When trust falls, people become sceptical, disengaged and divided. The same is true in organisations, communities and societies. Information may attract attention, but trust earns influence. In an age of unlimited content, credibility is becoming one of the most valuable leadership assets of all.

A little footwork goes a long way. Forget the 10,000-step myth, new research from Harvard shows that even a couple of short walks each week can do wonders for your health. In a decade-long study of more than 13,000 women with an average age of 72, those who managed just 4,000 steps on one or two days a week were 27% less likely to develop heart disease and 26% less likely to die prematurely. Hitting that target three times a week cut the risk of early death by 40%. Beyond that, extra steps offered only modest benefits. The lesson? You don’t need a marathon mindset, a few purposeful rallies with your feet are enough to keep you in the match. Game, set, and walk!

THE HIGH COST OF LOST TRUST. Nearly seven in ten consumers say they would abandon a brand they no longer trust. That should concern every leader. Trust takes years to build, minutes to lose and much longer to regain. Yet many organisations continue to focus on visibility, marketing and growth while overlooking the one asset that underpins them all. The challenge is becoming greater in the age of artificial intelligence. Consumers increasingly question what is real, what is automated and who is accountable when things go wrong. The lesson extends far beyond business. Whether leading a company, a team or a community, credibility remains your most valuable currency. Trust is earned in drops and lost in buckets.

WHO WANTS TO BE A TRILLIONAIRE? Back in 2008, Elon Musk was reportedly days away from bankruptcy. Tesla was struggling, SpaceX had suffered three consecutive launch failures, and both companies were running out of money. Then came Flight 4. The mission succeeded and secured a $1.5 billion NASA contract, providing the lifeline SpaceX desperately needed. What looked like failure suddenly became the foundation for something much bigger. SpaceX has since floated on Nasdaq at a valuation of $1.77 trillion, the largest IPO in history, helping Elon Musk become the world’s first trillionaire. Whether that valuation proves justified remains to be seen. The company has never generated a profit and its ambitions include thousands of reusable rockets, orbital data centres, global internet coverage and, ultimately, a city on Mars. Many people still think the vision is unrealistic. Then again, many people once said reusable rockets were impossible. Leadership is not the ability to predict the future. It is the willingness to keep going when the future is still invisible.

COSTA DEL SOL WITHOUT BORDERS: THE LIFESTYLE EVERYONE WANTS Golden beaches, world-class golf courses, glamorous marinas and more than 320 days of sunshine a year have long made the Costa del Sol one of Europe's most desirable destinations. Yet beyond its postcard-perfect image, a quiet transformation is taking place. The stretch of coastline from Marbella through Estepona to Sotogrande is no longer simply a collection of exclusive resorts—it has become one thriving international lifestyle destination attracting people from around the world. For many years the British have formed the largest community of overseas residents and visitors, drawn by Spain's relaxed way of life, affordable living and enviable climate. While that enduring love affair shows no sign of fading, today's Costa del Sol tells a far more international story. As living costs continue to rise across Europe and beyond, increasing numbers of Scandinavians, French, Belgians, Germans, Italians and even Americans are choosing southern Spain as a place to live, work or invest. They are not simply seeking sunshine; they are looking for a lifestyle that allows them to enjoy a higher quality of life while often spending less than they would in their home countries. Few places illustrate this evolution better than Manilva, including Sabinillas, Puerto de la Duquesa and Castillo. Once regarded as the quieter and more affordable neighbour between Marbella and Sotogrande, Manilva has steadily emerged as one of the Costa del Sol's fastest-growing destinations. Its appeal is easy to understand. Beautiful beaches, a welcoming atmosphere, excellent restaurants and easy access to both Marbella and Gibraltar make it an increasingly attractive choice for families, retirees, entrepreneurs and investors alike. As demand continues to grow, so too does the town itself, with new residential developments, businesses and services reflecting its rising profile. Brexit has undoubtedly changed the landscape for British residents. New residency requirements have encouraged some long-established homeowners to relocate to more affordable parts of the Costa or further inland as property prices and living costs continue to climb. Yet this shift has done little to diminish Britain's affection for Spain. Instead, it has simply reshaped the market.

OPINION

EDITION 300/301

The Marbella-to-Sotogrande corridor continues to attract those seeking a premium lifestyle, while Manilva has positioned itself as the destination offering exceptional value without compromising on location or quality of life. Perhaps the most significant change is how the region now functions. The old idea of separate expatriate communities is rapidly disappearing. Increasingly, the Costa del Sol operates as one connected international marketplace where residents move freely between towns, socialise across cultures and expect businesses to serve the entire coastline rather than a single postcode. The business community has adapted accordingly. Estate agencies that once concentrated on individual towns now market properties across the whole Costa while expanding into property management, holiday rentals and investment services. Restaurants, retailers and professional services are following the same path, recognising that today's clientele is international, mobile and increasingly multicultural.

English has naturally become the common language that connects this diverse community, making it easier than ever for newcomers to settle and for businesses to reach customers from every corner of Europe and beyond. The Costa del Sol has evolved into something far greater than a string of fashionable coastal towns. It is a vibrant international community where lifestyle, opportunity and investment go hand in hand. From the luxury of Marbella to the elegance of Sotogrande, with Manilva confidently emerging as one of its brightest stars, the region is no longer defined by municipal boundaries or nationalities. It is one destination, one market and, for an ever-growing international audience, one exceptional way of life.

SCREEN TIMEAND YOUNG MINDS: THE TWOAGES WHEN CHILDREN'S BRAINSARE MOSTAT RISK I often see mothers giving their mobile phone to their toddlers to keep them quiet. Is that a good idea? Smartphones, tablets and televisions have become part of everyday family life, but growing evidence suggests that when children use screens may be just as important as how long they spend in front of them. A major long-term study has identified two critical stages in childhood when excessive screen exposure appears to have the greatest impact on brain development and later learning. Researchers from France's Inserm and the National University of Singapore followed 502 children from infancy to the age of eight, tracking their screen use over several years. Their academic performance was later assessed at age nine, while working memory—a vital skill for learning—was tested at ten and a half. The findings challenge the assumption that the earlier children are exposed to screens, the greater the damage. Instead, the study highlights two particularly sensitive periods: around a child's first birthday and again at about six years old, when formal education begins.

55

The first year of life proved to be the most vulnerable. At this stage, the brain is developing at an extraordinary pace, building millions of neural connections through interaction with parents and caregivers. Eye contact, conversation, facial expressions and shared play provide the stimulation babies need to develop healthy cognitive skills. Screens, however colourful or entertaining, cannot respond to a baby's cues in the same way a human can. Children with higher levels of screen exposure at 12 months consistently performed less well years later in both academic tests and assessments of working memory. According to the researchers, this age showed the strongest association between screen use and later cognitive performance. Surprisingly, the pattern changed during the toddler years. Screen exposure at ages two and three showed no significant link with later academic achievement or working memory. That does not mean screens are harmless, the researchers stress. Language development, social skills and emotional wellbeing may still be affected, but these areas were not the focus of the study. A second period of concern emerged at around six years of age. As children begin school, learning relies increasingly on concentration, self-control and working memory. Researchers suggest that children accustomed to the fast-moving, constantly changing stimulation of digital media may find it harder to adapt to the slower pace and sustained attention required in the classroom. Working memory is often described as the brain's mental workspace. It allows children to follow instructions, solve mathematical problems, understand what they read and manage complex tasks. Because it underpins learning across every subject, weaker working memory can have lasting effects on educational success. The researchers acknowledge that the study has limitations. It involved children from Singapore, whose educational and cultural experiences may differ from those elsewhere, while screen use was reported by parents rather than measured directly. Even so, the message is clear: for parents trying to manage children's screen habits, the first year of life and the start of school may be the moments that matter most.

40 Years after Chernobyl: Lessons from the World's Worst Nuclear Disaster Forty years have passed since the explosion of reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26, 1986. The accident, considered the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history, continues to shape scientific research and public opinion. Recent analysis highlights not only what researchers have discovered but also the questions that remain unanswered.

Contrary to popular belief, the greatest long-term impact was not radiation alone. The only deaths directly linked to acute radiation exposure were the 28 firefighters and plant workers who died shortly after the explosion. Another welldocumented consequence was a sharp increase in thyroid cancer among children exposed to radioactive iodine. Fortunately, advances in medical treatment have resulted in survival rates above 98%. Scientists still disagree on the number of additional cancer cases caused by lower levels of radiation. Estimates vary widely because the effects of long-term, low-dose exposure remain difficult to measure. However, experts agree that the psychological and social consequences were far more widespread. Around 350,000 people were forced to leave their homes, and many experienced anxiety, depression, heart disease, and long-lasting feelings of poor health. Poor communication also made the situation worse. Government secrecy and sensational media reports created unnecessary fear, even leading to thousands of voluntary abortions across Europe despite radiation levels posing little or no measurable risk. WEB EXPRESS GUIDE

The abandoned exclusion zone has also become a remarkable ecological experiment. With humans gone, large mammals such as wolves, deer, lynx, and brown bears have returned in impressive numbers. Nevertheless, research shows that birds and insects living in the most contaminated areas still suffer from reduced populations and signs of genetic damage. Today, Chernobyl offers valuable lessons for the future of nuclear energy. As countries seek cleaner energy sources, the disaster reminds us that the greatest challenges are not only technical but also social. Effective safety measures, transparent communication, and responsible political decisions are just as important as preventing radiation itself. Most importantly, Chernobyl was the result of an accident involving a single nuclear reactor. If the world were ever to witness the use of nuclear weapons, the consequences would be far greater, extending beyond radioactive contamination to include massive loss of life, widespread destruction of infrastructure, long-term environmental damage, and global political instability. Chernobyl serves as a reminder of the devastating power of nuclear technology and the importance of ensuring that such weapons are never used.
