Story by Elyse Apel

Joel Gresham never set out to become known as “The Wedding Guy.”
But, with over three decades of shaping unforgettable celebrations, building thriving businesses, and mentoring the next generation of wedding professionals, the title has become impossible to deny.
“I didn’t plan this,” Joel admits with a smile. “But here we are, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
What began in 1989 as a small DJ company has evolved into one of Michigan’s most trusted wedding empires. From Mid Michigan Entertainment—once producing over 550 events a year—to destination wedding planning through Sandals Resorts, Joel has built a reputation as the go-to expert for couples who want it all.

Today, his reach extends far beyond music. His companies now provide DJs, photo booths, bartending, officiants, and travel services—all designed to make every couple’s wedding seamless from start to finish.
Joel’s newest passion project is the Irish Chapel, a breathtaking open-air wedding chapel nestled on 70 acres in the Irish Hills. Overlooking a serene pond and surrounded by private countryside, the chapel blends modern design with timeless elegance.
“It’s like nothing most people have ever seen before,” Joel says. “It’s brand new, it’s private, and it creates an unforgettable backdrop for couples’ vows.”
Inspired by a historic Virginia church he once discovered with his son, Joel brought the vision home—on a grander scale. Within weeks of its completion, he and his wife Lilly became the first couple to marry there, making the chapel deeply personal as well as iconic.
And he isn’t stopping there. Designing is already underway on a second reception venue—designed to complement the modern feel of the Irish Chapel. Couples will soon have the choice between rustic charm or modern elegance, both crafted under Joel’s expert eye.
Joel’s influence extends well beyond Michigan. He has spoken at national conventions, headlined as DJ at the World of Weddings conference in the Bahamas, and runs the Mid Michigan Bridal Expo with shows in Jackson, Adrian, and Ann Arbor.
Through The Wedding Guy Blog and his TikTok account, he shares insider tips, vendor advice, and fresh ideas with thousands of readers. He also mentors other professionals through webinars and is currently writing a book to help wedding vendors thrive.
“I’m always learning,” Joel explains. “I attend multiple DJ, wedding, vendor, and venue owners conventions every year. Trends change fast, and my job is to stay ahead of them so my couples always get the very best.”
Despite his company handling over 10,000 events, and personally managing over a thousand in his 35 years, Joel insists his most important role is connecting with couples on a personal level.
“When you book with me, you get my personal cell phone number,” he says. “I’m not just there at the booking process and I don’t just show up on your wedding day. I’m there with you throughout the planning process, making sure every detail comes together. This is my passion—and it’s a blessing to be part of people’s best memories.”
For Joel, “The Wedding Guy” isn’t just a nickname. It’s a legacy built on dedication, creativity, and love for an industry he calls home.

Preparing for your wedding is an exciting time, and it’s natural to want to feel confident and healthy on your big day. If weight loss is one of your goals, the key is to focus on sustainable habits rather than quick fixes.
Start with realistic expectations. Crash diets may promise fast results, but they often lead to fatigue, mood swings, and rebound weight gain. Instead, aim for gradual progress that helps you feel energized and strong.
Nutrition should be your foundation. Prioritize whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Staying hydrated and reducing excess sugar, ultra-processed foods, and late-night snacking can make a noticeable difference without extreme restriction.
Incorporate regular movement you enjoy. Whether it’s walking, strength training, yoga, or dance workouts, consistency matters more than intensity. Strength training is especially helpful for improving posture and muscle tone, which can enhance how your wedding outfit fits.
Don’t overlook sleep and stress management. Wedding planning can be overwhelming, and high stress or poor sleep can slow weight loss. Adequate rest, deep breathing, or short breaks can support both your mental health and physical goals.
Finally, remember that your wedding is about celebrating love—not perfection. Focus on feeling healthy, confident, and happy, and you’ll shine no matter the number on the scale.

For most brides, their wedding colors will set the tone for the whole wedding. From a light summer celebration to a jewel-toned evening reception, the color theme shapes the entire look and feel of the day. As couples plan weddings for 2026, palettes are moving in bolder, warmer and more expressive directions, while still feeling refined and timeless. Here is your 2026 guide to the most popular wedding colors.
Rich jewel tones are defining many 2026 weddings. Emerald, sapphire, ruby, burgundy and deep cobalt blue are appearing across bridesmaid dresses, florals, linens and decor. These classic hues are timeless and signify depth and richness, making them especially popular for fall and winter weddings.
Cobalt blue is also emerging as a breakout favorite. Vibrant yet polished, this deep blue works beautifully as a base color or as a bold accent. Used in bridesmaid dresses, table linens or even glassware, cobalt pairs well with soft neutrals and metallics like gold and bronze, creating a look that feels fresh without straying from classic elegance.
Warm colors are gaining popularity for spring and summer celebrations. Peach, coral, blush, terracotta and soft orange create welcoming palettes that shine. These tones are especially well suited to outdoor, garden, or backyard weddings, where they complement greenery and open-air settings.
Another standout color is Island Citrus. This yellowgreen shade has been named the 2026 Wedding Color of the Year by Brides and Minted. This energetic color brings brightness and personality to 2026 wedding designs. Couples could look to incorporate it through floral accents, stationery details, bar menus, or even in signature cocktails for a cheerful and memorable pop of color.
Pastels remain a staple in wedding design, but, in 2026, they are appearing with more depth and confidence. Traditional blush and rose tones that have appeared in weddings for years are evolving in 2026 into richer shades like raspberry and fuchsia. These colors offer a slightly bolder take on the classic romantic colors like lavender, lilac, and powder blue, which continue to charm, particularly in spring celebrations.
Green is also emerging as a top color, with sage, olive and emerald no longer reserved for accents. Instead, couples are choosing green as a primary color for their 2026 receptions.
On the quieter end of the color spectrum, earthy neutrals are making a strong showing. Sand, taupe, espresso brown, and warm beige offer understated elegance perfect for many different wedding themes.
For couples drawn to drama, darker palettes are gaining traction. Black cherry, deep plum, and wine tones create an elegant richness when paired with ivory, champagne or metallic accents. These colors shine in evening settings, particularly when used in conjunction with candlelight and luxe fabrics.
Unexpected color combinations are also becoming more common. Pairings like emerald with burnt orange or electric blue with magenta reflect a growing comfort with bold, personalized choices that feel unique without feeling trendy.
Classic neutrals remain a reliable base for nearly every wedding style. Ivory, cream and champagne provide timeless backdrops that allow accent colors to stand out, ensuring wedding photos feel elevated and enduring for years to come. These softer hues also pair easily with many different accent colors, making them versatile across all four seasons and different venues.

Creativity takes center stage for wedding dress designers in 2026. Brides are reimagining classic silhouettes and embracing their own individual styles and tastes through different fabrics, colors, and styles. From clean, minimalist gowns to dramatic, fashion-forward designs, wedding dresses will strike a balance between tradition and modern expression. Here is your guide to the top bridal attire trends defining 2026.
Minimalist wedding gowns continue to evolve, proving that simple designs do not necessarily mean boring. Clean lines, shapes, and precise tailoring define this look. Brides drawn to sleek elegance will find gowns crafted from structured fabrics like mikado silk, crepe, and satin . . . all designed to highlight the body without relying on heavy embellishment.
Sharp necklines, asymmetry, and tailored corsetry are features that can give these gowns a refined edge. The result is a polished, modern aesthetic that allows the bride to stand out in a classy way.
While simple gowns remain popular, bold details are taking center stage this year. Statement sleeves are especially prominent, ranging from sheer and softly draped styles to detachable puffs and off-the-shoulder designs. These elements add drama while still feeling romantic.
Bows, ribbons, and appliqués are also appearing across bridal collections. These eye-catching details blend classic romance with a unique sensibility, offering brides a chance to make a statement without overwhelming the gown.

Versatility is another one of the defining bridal trends of the year. Convertible gowns with removable trains, detachable sleeves and overskirts allow brides to create multiple looks in one dress. A dramatic ceremony silhouette can transition seamlessly into a sleeker reception style, offering practicality and ease throughout the day.
Classic white and ivory remain timeless, but 2026 also takes another approach to bridal color. Champagne, blush, pale blue and rose quartz are appearing in wed
Necklines are getting a refresh this year. High necks, halter styles, and cat-eye cuts are emerging as popular alternatives to classic strapless or sweetheart designs. These shapes frame the face beautifully and lend a modern edge to bridal fashion.
Not every bride envisions a traditional gown, and bridal outfits this year fully embrace that. Bridal separates, tailored trousers, chic blazers, and two-piece looks are also gaining popularity, especially for intimate ceremonies or alternative receptions.

At its core, bridal fashion in 2026 is about personal expression. Brides are blending timeless silhouettes with modern details. They are choosing gowns that reflect who they are rather than following strict tradition. 2026 features thoughtful designs, soft colors, innovative textures, and versatile elements.

As couples plan wedding receptions for 2026, they are looking for unique spins to the classic traditions. Modern receptions are often designed to feel personal and memorable. From fluid reception timelines and personalized themes, 2026 wedding receptions will be ones to remember. Here is a closer look at the reception trends shaping 2026 celebrations.
This year, traditional reception schedules will often give way to more relaxed, guest-centered formats. Rather than clearly defined segments like cocktail hour, seated dinner, and dancing, couples are designing receptions focused on the overall experience instead of singular moments.
Reception layouts are also evolving to support these receptions. Lounge areas, self-led food stations, and multiple gathering points are replacing single formal dinner setups. Seating is becoming more creative as well, as many couples opt for long communal tables over the more traditional seating arrangements.
Wedding themes in 2026 are rooted in storytelling rather than simple color coordination. Couples are using decor, lighting, and interactive elements to create a beautiful experience. Oversized floral installations, custom backdrops, and over-the-top decorations help shape the atmosphere and leave lasting impressions.
Some celebrations will lean into bold concepts with expressive color palettes and playful details, while others will opt to blend classic elegance with modern design. Chandeliers, soft textiles, and candlelight can be paired with modern venues for a look that feels both timeless and current.
Sustainability and environmental concerns are also influencing reception design. Some couples are opting for locally-sourced or handmade dresses, thrifted decor, and even living plants or potted arrangements that can be replanted or gifted after the wedding.
Catering in 2026 is less about formality and more about experience. For many couples, food is becoming one of the event’s main attractions. Seasonal and local ingredients are taking center stage, delivering vibrant plates that feel fresh and thoughtful.
Interactive dining experiences also continue to gain popularity. Live pasta stations, charcuterie tables, and unique open bars invite guests into the process.
Personalized menus can reflect the couple’s cultural backgrounds, shared travels, and even favorite comfort foods.
Grazing tables are also evolving. Rather than serving as simple buffets, in 2026, these thoughtfully styled spreads will become focal points. At many weddings with late-night receptions, snack stations will keep energy high.
Signature cocktails and mocktails remain essential, with drinks inspired by seasons, themes, hometown flavors, or even inside jokes. Styled bar areas can double as social hubs, encouraging guests to gather and linger.

Reception design in 2026 will vary greatly depending on the wedding’s theme and venue. Cocktail-style formats with mixand-mingle zones allow guests flexibility.
Couples are also weaving in many different unique experiences throughout their receptions. Live music sets, surprise entertainment, or photo booths can add variety and keep the celebration feeling dynamic.
Beyond decor and menus, receptions are becoming more sensory and interactive. Custom guest gifts, curated party playlists, interactive photo experiences, and creative memory or guest books are all the rage in 2026.
Through these many different unique ideas, couples can create receptions that give their guests delightful and memorable experiences.

Wedding reception games add more than just entertainment—they help create a warm, lively, and memorable atmosphere for everyone involved. They break the ice by encouraging guests who may not know each other to interact, helping shy or introverted attendees feel included. Games create moments of laughter and shared joy that guests often remember long after the wedding, while also filling natural gaps in the reception timeline, such as during photos or meal service, so the energy never drops.
Wedding games highlight the couple’s personality and love story, allowing guests to feel more connected to them, and they offer an inclusive way for people of all ages—including non-dancers—to participate. In addition, games encourage movement, conversation, and candid photo opportunities, keeping the celebration dynamic and engaging.
Ultimately, wedding reception games transform guests from passive observers into active participants, making the event feel more personal, fun, and unforgettable.
Here are a few games you can try:
• Wedding Shoe Game – Couple answers “who’s more likely” questions by raising shoes
• Musical Chairs (Wedding Version) – Often with bouquets or chairs removed
• Anniversary Dance – Couples stay on the floor based on years married
• Table Trivia – Wedding-themed or couple trivia
• Pass the Bouquet – Like hot potato with music
• Freeze Dance – Last person moving is out
• Wedding Bingo – Guests mark off moments (first kiss, speeches, dancing)

Meeting with your wedding florist is an exciting step, a little preparation can make the consultation even more productive and stress-free. Here’s what your florist wants you to know before you sit down together.
Inspiration is helpful, not a rulebook.
Bring photos you love, but don’t worry about recreating them exactly. Flowers are seasonal and natural, meaning no two arrangements are ever identical. Your florist’s job is to capture the feeling and style you’re drawn to, while adapting it to what’s fresh and available for your date.
Your budget matters and honesty helps.
Sharing your floral budget upfront isn’t awkward; it’s essential. Knowing your comfort range allows your florist to prioritize where flowers will make the biggest impact, suggest smart substitutions, and design something beautiful without surprises later.
Seasonality affects both look and cost. Certain flowers simply aren’t available year-round, or they may need to be imported at a higher cost. Trust your florist’s recommendations as seasonal blooms often look fuller, last longer, and fit your budget better.
Your venue and timeline influence design. Details like ceiling height, ceremony setup, guest count, and even how long your reception lasts all affect floral choices. Sharing your full wedding timeline helps your florist plan installations, repurposing, and delivery logistics smoothly.
Flexibility leads to better results.
While color palettes and styles ideas are a great start, being open to suggestions from your florist on designs, specific flowers, and additional textures gives your florist creative freedom and often results in a more elevated design.
You don’t need to know everything.
Many couples worry they aren’t “floral experts.” That’s okay, you’re not expected to be! A good florist will guide you, explain options clearly, and turn your ideas into a design that reflects your story.
Your consultation is a collaboration. Come prepared, stay openminded, and trust the expertise. Your flowers will thank you!
