Driving Has Never Been More Distracting

e all need to find positivity and pass it on with a side of kindness. This especially holds true on the highways. I’m just putting this out there in the most straightforward way possible; everybody makes mistakes while driving. And yes, I know cell phones are the leading distraction. However, what’s most alarming to me is when I witness these mistakes and the reactions by some of the drivers who make them. Think about the most dangerous encounters we all have while driving. It is when somebody cuts you off, runs through a yield or stop sign, turns left and cuts across traffic in front of you, turns the opposite way of what their turn signal is telling you, and crosses into your lane head-on. Or one I’ve seen way too much of this past summer, for whatever reason, is going the wrong way. These obviously are some of the most serious infractions, and I’m going to give the driver the benefit of the doubt — they happened accidentally. We all can also make a list of everyday occurrences that are annoying. These are usually the result of someone being distracted while behind the wheel. I

witnessed a lady on the Market Street Bridge that covers many of these. The light had turned green, yet the car just sat not moving; fortunately, there was no traffic, so I simply went around her. The driver had a cigarette in their left hand out the window, knees holding the steering wheel, cell phone in their right hand and a breakfast sandwich balanced on the dashboard. Now that is multitasking. I must mention a frustration heading down the same track but in the opposite lane. When the light just turns green, and the person behind you lays on the horn like you’re in a drag race and should have been off like a shot. Now back to what’s most alarming regarding the driver who makes a mistake or is distracted. They scream at the other driver, who has done nothing and possibly avoided a crash by the quick reaction. They give the death stare as if to say, that was your fault, *expletive*. They give the one-finger salute, shake their fist, and by reading, lips say words that I don’t even know. Often, it’s a combination of all the above; remember, this is by the person that has made a mistake or is distracted. The much more worrisome actions are when somebody gets on your rear

bumper like they’re drafting you in a NASCAR race, rides directly next to you and will not allow you to pass, or, after pulling in front of your vehicle, slows down to 20 miles below the speed limit. In today’s world gone Jim Webb Jr. mad, we never know what a person is thinking, and we have all heard of incidents of road rage that end in violence. When I have read through reports of these incidents that have turned tragic, often the situation has been escalated by the reaction of a driver that was just minding their own business that day. The person who was first at fault then takes the situation to a whole different level. I log a lot of miles every year, and I make mistakes, and yes, sometimes I get distracted. I think if most drivers are honest, this just happens. The key and responsibility we all have are to limit the number of times it happens, thus reducing the opportunity for bad things to happen. So, circling back around to applying kindness and positivity while driving. If I make a mistake or am distracted, I wave and mouth ‘I’m sorry’ to the other driver. It was my fault; I wear it. If the other driver responds to me angrily, I wear it; I deserve it. I consider myself fortunate that I wasn’t the cause of an accident and

drive away. Now to the much more difficult reaction. When somebody else crosses my driving path, and clearly, it was their mistake. Yes, I usually cuss to myself, but then wave that left hand, smile, and mouth; ‘it’s OK.’ If they ignore me or behave like I mentioned earlier, I just continue on my way. Again, thanking God that I can just continue on my way. My closing thought on this topic is about drivers who are under the influence, which can cover a wide variety of things compared to the days when it was mostly alcohol. I think we all have a responsibility to call 911 if we see anyone operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner. And I’m talking about when they are clearly driving erratically. For those of you that may feel uncomfortable about this, just think about what could occur if you do not. There is also the possibility the person operating that vehicle may be having a medical emergency. It could be something as simple as a reaction to prescribed medication, a diabetic issue, or an allergic response. Again, I’m not talking about when someone crosses the dotted center line on I-180 a couple of times; this is when there is obviously a problem. I hope I’ve provided something for you to think about as you’re driving, but please don’t let it be a distraction. As I often end my articles, let’s all be safe out there. God Bless America.

et’s be honest: There are approximately 47,000 skincare routines floating around the internet. Cleanser. Toner. Essence. Serum. Eye cream. Another serum. Moisturizer. Face oil. And don’t forget the separate morning and nighttime routines. Listen, I’m tired just writing that list. And there is zero chance I am going to do all that. You are lucky if I remember to take my makeup off before bed. If, like me, you want to take care of your skin but have absolutely no desire to spend 30 minutes every morning and night applying products, good news: you really don’t have to. As we get older, our skin does change. It can become drier, thinner and more sensitive, and collagen production slows down. That doesn’t mean we need an entire bathroom cabinet devoted to skincare. In fact, a simple routine that you’ll actually do consistently is far more useful than an elaborate routine that makes you want to throw everything in the trash. Step 1: Wash Your Face: Start with a gentle cleanser. That’s it. You don’t need something that leaves your face feeling like you just scrubbed it with a kitchen sponge. In fact, that tight, squeaky-clean feeling can be a sign that you’ve stripped too much moisture from your skin. Look for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser if your skin tends to be dry or sensitive. house can use. And if you’re thinking, But I don’t wear makeup every day, that’s fine. You still want to wash away sweat, oil, sunscreen, etc. If nothing else, have you been outside? It’s gross out there! Step 2: Moisturize: Use a moisturizer that works for your skin type and use it consistently. I am also a fan of CeraVe here also. Their daily face lotion is light, but effective and has 30 SPF which can save you a step later on if you don’t want to use a separate product. As skin gets drier with age, keeping that moisture barrier happy becomes increasingly important. You don’t necessarily need the fanciest moisturizer on the shelf. You need one you like using. If your skin is dry, look for ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin or hyaluronic acid. If your skin is oily or combination, you may prefer something lighter. And don’t forget your neck. Your neck is attached to your face and has apparently decided it would like to participate in this whole aging thing, too. Step 3: Sunscreen. Seriously. If your moisturizer doesn’t have it — you need it. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher should be part of your morning routine, especially if you spend time outside. Sun exposure is a major contributor to premature skin aging, including wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and loss of elasticity. Put it on your face, neck and other exposed skin. This is the skincare step that is worth being annoyingly consistent about. Step 4: Pick ONE Anti-Aging Ingredi-

ent: Notice that I said one. If you want to add something specifically aimed at signs of aging, a retinoid is one of the better-studied options. Retinoids can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation and can support collagen production over time. Start slowly — perhaps a couple of nights per week — and use a moisturizer. Retinoids can cause dryness and irritation, particularly when you’re first starting. And if your skin hates it? You don’t get bonus points for suffering. There are other ingredients that can be useful depending on your goals, including vitamin C and niacinamide, but you don’t need to start adding them all at once. Your skin does not need a science experiment. A perfectly respectable basic routine can look like this: MORNING: Wash or rinse your face. Moisturizer. SPF 30+ if your moisturizer doesn’t have it. NIGHT: Gentle cleanser. Moisturizer. Optional retinoid a few nights a week. That’s the whole thing. No jade roller required. No refrigerator full of tiny bottles. No standing in front of the bathroom mirror wondering which product you’re supposed to use before the other product. What About Eye Cream? Exfoliation? Sacrificing the first-born son of the 2nd generation lamb? All fine, but not necessary. Pick out an eye cream if you have specific concerns. Exfoliate gently every now and again if you are feeling a little dry or dull. But that’s all bonus stuff that a lazy girl ain’t doing every day (nor should you when it comes to exfoliating!) As for the sacrifice — again, moderation, but if it works, let me know!

his year marks the 50th year of operation for the Community Theater League. An entity that has brought excellence to the stage and enriched the cultural climate of northcentral Pennsylvania during that time at various locales. But perhaps the best way to understand CTL’s 50 years is through the organization’s anniversary theme: “50 Years of Building Community Through Storytelling.” The phrase captures what CTL has always been about. The productions are important, but the community created around them is just as important. The CTL was founded in 1976 by five local, theatre-minded businesspeople who envisioned a theatre that would be genuinely open to the community. There were no membership dues or annual meetings, and auditions were open to anyone regardless of previous experience. An early CTL slogan captured the philosophy perfectly: “Your participation is membership in the Community Theatre League.” CTL’s first documented production, Once Upon a Mattress, was staged in 1977 in the basement of the Lycoming County Historical Museum. In its early years, the organization moved

And grow it did. From producing theatre to building opportunities, over the decades, CTL’s mission expanded far beyond putting productions on a stage. Youth theatre, summer camps, classes, workshops, student productions, and high school programs became increasingly important parts of the organization. The Ray of Light Awards began recognizing excellence in high school theatre throughout the region. between community venues before establishing a permanent home. In 1980, CTL purchased the former Kingdom Hall at 1131 Washington Boulevard. Volunteers renovated the building themselves, creating a theatre that served the organization for nearly two decades. By the late 1990s, CTL had once again outgrown its home. The organization ultimately became part of the revitalization of downtown Williamsport, moving into the Joseph McDade Trade and Transit Centre in 1999. That move gave CTL a permanent downtown home, but it also provided something else: room to grow.

It creates spaces where people with completely different backgrounds, beliefs, ages, and experiences come together to create something collectively. A huge part of what we strive to communicate at CTL is that theatre is not just entertainment; it’s an opportunity for connection. The arts remind people how to listen to each other again. They remind us how to feel together. That’s incredibly important right now.”

tunities to learn both performance and backstage skills. CTL also expanded its commitment to inclusive theatre. The organization became a replication site for The Penguin Project, giving young performers with special needs the opportunity to participate in full theatrical productions alongside peer mentors. The Spotlight Program extended that commitment to adults with developmental disabilities. CTL’s history has not been without challenges. The organization faced an extraordinary disruption when COVID-19 shut down live theatre in 2020. Productions were cancelled and postponed, educational programming was disrupted, and CTL found new ways to remain connected with the community while normal operations were suspended. At the same time, fixed facility expenses continued. The organization also ultimately lost its third-floor space after city officials determined that a lease amendment for the space had not received the required municipal approval. CTL had occupied the approximately 4,500-square-foot space for years, paid rent under the arrangement, and

developed significant educational and theatrical programming. The 50th Anniversary Season opened with the regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical “Come From Away,” a choice that is particularly fitting as the musical tells the true story of approximately 7,000 airline passengers whose flights were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, following the events of September 11, 2001. Other productions scheduled this season include: “Annie,” “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery,” Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” and the season concludes with Mel Brooks’ “The Producers.” The season includes Theatre for Kids, By Kids SPROUTS programming with “Peter Pan”, and The Penguine Project’s production of Disney’s “Dare to Dream Jr.” Throughout the year, CTL will celebrate its 50th anniversary through special events and programming, culminating in a multi-generational concert production of “Guys and Dolls” on the Historic Journey Bank Community Arts Center stage. It is going to be an extra special 50th anniversary season this year at the Community Theater League.

he Lycoming County Commissioners gathered on September 3 to celebrate a milestone that transforms how the region connects to the broader world. After nearly five years without consistent commercial air service, Williamsport Regional Airport will welcome Contour Airlines beginning October 19, 2026. The announcement marks a moment when a community’s persistent effort to restore connectivity finally succeeds, and the commissioners made clear that success depends entirely on residents choosing to use what they have fought to reclaim. Contour Airlines will operate one daily nonstop round-trip flight between Williamsport Regional Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The flight from Williamsport departs early in the morning at approximately 6:15 a.m., while the return flight from Charlotte arrives back in Williamsport around 5:45 p.m. The airline operates with 30-seat regional jets and offers interline connectivity, meaning passengers can book seamless connection tickets through Contour’s major partner airlines, including American, Delta, United, Alaska, and JetBlue. This connectivity transforms what appears to be a single route into a gateway.

Passengers boarding a morning flight to Charlotte can reach destinations across the entire national airline network without changing airlines or managing separate tickets. The mid-October timeline is officially locked in. October 19, 2026, is confirmed and no longer contingent on approvals. The route choice and agreement have been finalized directly between airport leadership, the community, and the airline. This is not a provisional promise. This is operational reality arriving in weeks. The commissioners emphasized something equally critical. Commissioner Marc Sortman, Scott Metzger, and Mark Mussina warned that if residents do not utilize the flights, the service will leave, potentially ending commercial air service out of

It is a statement of economic reality. Airlines operate on passenger volume. Suppose seats remain empty; routes close. The commissioners understand that restoring air service requires not just securing an agreement with an airline; it requires a community commitment actually to use that service. The commissioners took time at the end of the meeting to extend gratitude to the county departments, emergency management teams, and law enforcement who worked to keep the community safe during the Little League World Series. The tournament concluded with the commissioners’ meeting, and the recognition acknowledged the extensive planning and teamwork that made the high-profile global event a success. The 2026 tournament attracted nearly 70,000 players, coaches, and fans to the Williamsport area, according to data released by the Lycoming County Visitors Bureau. The two-week event injected an estimated $40 million boost into the regional and state economy, heavily benefiting local hotels, restaurants, and downtown businesses. Managing that scale of visitors required coordination across multiple county departments and emergency personnel working in unison.

Local logistics during the tournament had to manage prominent weather disruptions, including severe rain and flash flooding that altered game schedules and required localized damage assessments by emergency management teams. The commissioners praised the safety and logistics teams for the tournament’s success despite real operational challenges. Weather does not cooperate with sporting schedules. Flooding does not announce itself in advance. The fact that the tournament ran successfully reflected the skill and dedication of people working behind the scenes to manage crises that most visitors never witnessed. What emerged from the September 3 meeting was a picture of a region at an inflection point. Commercial air service is returning to Williamsport, but only if the community supports it. Ascocarps, Cucks and Razees: The Return of Weird Words By Joseph W. Smith III

e’re back! Yes, Webb’s “Weird Words” is at last returning to … well, weird words! Since late July, we’ve been down a rabbit-hole on grammar, trying to lift the stigma against ain’t — as well as foolish rules about terminal prepositions and split infinitives; and then we worked to straighten out who-whom, along with those tricky verbs lay and lie.

But now I see that Microsoft Word has red-lined ain’t — so apparently, my computer ain’t listening … though I’m pretty sure my cell-phone does this with shameless regularity. (Wups — almost went down another rabbit-hole there!) In any case, Word also red-lined a few of the terms I just picked out from my sprawling list of oddball vocab — which is what we usually deal with in this column. So, we’ve got work to do!

Here’s a brand-new batch: Ascocarp (ASS-kuh-carp, noun) – This is one of those definitions that drives people nuts when they use the dictionary: “A globular structure containing the asci.” That’s from the exhaustive Collins — and happily, asci is on the same page: “The plural of ascus.” Grrrrr! And so we look again — also happily on the same page: An ascus is a saclike structure that produces spores during sexual reproduction in certain fungi and mildew. Phew. Not exactly a conversation-starter. Cuck (KUK, noun) – A man whose wife is cheating on him. This is apparently a shortening of the

somewhat more common cuckold, which means the same thing and is a frequent insult in the works of Shakespeare. Cuckold appears to derive from cuckoo, a creature that sometimes lays eggs in other birds’ nests. According to Wikipedia, “cuckold” is also a biology term for “a male who unwittingly invests parental effort in juveniles who are not genetically his offspring.” (Not hard to see the connection with infidelity there!) Merriam-Webster is the only source I could find for cuck; its listing includes numerous amusing synonyms for a cheated-on male: “cornute, cornuto, hoddy-doddy, hoddypoll, horn, ram, and wittol (a man who

M-W is understandably puzzled that we have so many words to call a male in this position, but regarding women with an unfaithful spouse: “For that, our language appears to have but a single word, and an obscure one at that: cuckquean.” Eyre (AIR, noun) – “A circuit traveled by an itinerant justice in medieval England” — or, the court presided over by this roving figure (Merriam-Webster). This word derives from the common Latin base err-, meaning “to wander.” That root has given us words like errand and knight-errant — a knight who roams, of course — along with a whole family of words meaning “mistake” (i.e., “a wandering from the truth”): error, err, erroneous, etc. And for the record, while I cannot quite connect Charlotte Bronte’s famed heroine Jane Eyre to an itinerant judge, that very talented author does love thematic resonance in her names (“Rochester,” for instance, literally means “camp of the rock”); and there’s no doubt Jane, while also being an “heir,” is likewise a wanderer … especially in the final section of that amazing novel. Pattypan (PAH-tee-pan, noun) – Pronounced exactly as you might expect (“patty”), this is not a childhood handgame, but rather “a variety of wheel-

shaped summer squash with a ribbed edge” (Microsoft Encarta College Dictionary). Also called cymling (“SIM-ling”), this vegetable is named for its patty-like shape — though it’s a good deal larger than your average burger! Razee (ray-ZEE, noun) – “A sailing ship that has had its upper deck removed” (Collins). Can also be a verb, meaning to take off that upper deck. And yes, this word is related to the more common raze, meaning to demolish, level or remove. That in turn is linguistically tied to razor — and, for that matter, also to erase. Well, we managed only five today before running out of space; so let me end by going down one final rabbit-hole: In the pronunciations above, did you notice the “C” in cymling is pronounced as S, while in cuck that same letter makes a K sound? So if you think about it, we really don’t even need C; each of its sounds is already covered by another letter! All it does is cause headaches with pronunciation and spelling. This is why the somewhat more efficient Greek language doesn’t even have an equivalent to C. So next time you lament that something — like maybe a bit of the material above — is “all Greek to me,” just remember: At least they have the sense not to double up letters!

ne step. A slight hop to launch, and you’re airborne. The goal is to make the dive look easy, to enter the water like a sword through butter, with not a single ripple to show for it. The goal is not to smack the water, belly-down, but as in the new novel, “Man Overboard!” by Kathleen Rooney, to do it with grace, elegance — and definitely with sobriety. As he treaded water, waves washing up on his face and into his eyes, Patrick “Kick” Kilpatrick wished he could remember what happened. One minute, he was aboard the Carnival Valor, drinking, enjoying-not-enjoying a Thanksgiving cruise with his extended family. The next minute, he was fighting to find the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, kicking off his shoes and his shorts, losing his phone, watching the ship blithely continue on. Apparently, nobody noticed that he’d fallen (or leaped?) from an upper deck of the ship. Though he was a swimming phenom back in Nebraska, Kick hated the ocean. He hated being in water when he couldn’t touch the bottom, hated any place where possibly-dangerous creatures sneaked up

behind him. His sister, Kelly, would eventually think to check on him because she was always like that. Her worthless husband, however, wouldn’t care. Ulysses, Kick’s nephew, would miss him; Kick’s father and stepmother, too. But would they miss Kick like he longed for his mother, who’d been gone for years? He wasn’t sure. It didn’t matter. Within the hour, someone would come to save him. He told himself that all night long, through every hour of treading water and

that, too, which gives him an appealingly snarky-profane demeanor. True, you might think that reading the hours-long musings from a dying man might be tedious, but nothing could be further from the truth; Kick is philosophical and wry, self-pitying and self-depreciating, while also doing a little soul-searching, and Rooney keeps his thoughts taut. It’s suspense at its finest, but also with a splash of humor. Will Kick be rescued? Nuh-uh. No spoilers here. Unlike a classic “man in a small locked room” kind of suspense novel, “Man Overboard!” has a setting that’s some 32 million miles square. That doesn’t make it any less tight, though, so find it and dive right in.

He imagined his rescue, as dolphins, turtles and large fish visited him, counseled him, taunted him with unwanted comments. Someone would be along soon — but in the meantime, there was nothing to see but waves and water and a man slowly losing his mind… As hot as it’s been this summer, at any one point, a dip in the ocean may have sounded mighty good, right? You’ll think twice after you read “Man Overboard!” The second Kick hits the water, author Kathleen Rooney lets him dog-paddle into your psyche, complete with a lifetimes’ worth of regrets. field views are picturesque. But I’ll take my woodsy view all day long. Where my animals are literally a stone’s throw away from our kitchen window. Sitting at the dining room table at dinner and watching all the wildlife enjoy their dinner too. It’s private and intimate, and I love it. Oh my goodness, last night we had the sweetest view too! You just never know what you will see around here. I’ll share that later too! But getting up at the time I did, I can say I actually really enjoyed my quiet time. I got chicken salad made for my family’s lunches that week, made hashbrown casserole and crockpot pumpkin dump cake for our church picnic, and had cheese shredded and ready for taking dinner to my mom’s that following night, and side dishes started for my back-to-school dinner on Tuesday. In two hours, I had seven different things made. The things we can get done in the morning before everyone else even wakes up are pretty crazy. This is the second week in a row I have gotten up that early to cook in the kitchen, and I am here for it. Garlic Green Beans (Oldie but goodie for green bean season!) Ingredients: • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil • 1 lb. washed and trim fresh green beans • 3 garlic cloves, minced

• 1/4 cup water • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. Add green beans and cook over heat until the color of the bean starts to change a bright green. About 2-3 minutes or so. Next, add in garlic and cook for an additional minute. Pour in water, cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 2-3 minutes or until the beans are tender and water is absorbed. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper.

Unkillable Coyote: That’s Not Quite All, Folks!

t’s impressive how a blundering, bird-hating beast like Wile E. Coyote has somehow become a sort of cartoon underdog. What’s even more impressive is the similar dark-horse status of the terrific new movie featuring that unkillable canine and his road-running nemesis. Indeed, Warner Bros. was so skeptical about Coyote vs. Acme that they tried to deep-six it and take a tax write-off. Instead, after a grass-roots campaign by

filmmakers, fans and social-media posters, WB finally sold it to Ketchup Entertainment for a summer 2026 release. The result: at Rotten Tomatoes, a whopping 96 & 95 rating (from critics and viewers). A bracing blend of live-action and animation, the film is loosely based on a facetious New Yorker article in which the long-suffering Coyote sues Acme because their devices have failed him with such bone-rattling consistency (falling

So, he hires an Albuquerque law firm called Avery, Jones & Maltese, which itself proves a bit of an underdog against a massive conglomerate that Joseph W. makes everything Smith III from perfume to paint to dehydrated boulders. The first thing this film gets right is nostalgia. It is peppered with virtually every Looney Tunes character, including Daffy, Porky, Foghorn and Tweety, along with such lesser-knowns as Witch Hazel, Charlie Dog and Gossamer — that furry orange monster with tennis shoes and no nose. (Virtually absent are WB’s “most-likely-to-be-canceled”: Speedy Gonzales — no doubt guilty of racial stereotyping — and of course Monsieur Le Pew, who has, shall we say, problems with consent.) The amazing Eric Bauza voices nearly all the male cartoon characters, managing to recapture that Mel Blanc magic with mesmerizing perfection. The movie also features clips from original Coyote cartoons, plus a bunch of injokes — like the law firm’s name, which pays homage to three long-ago Looney Tunes legends: Tex Avery, Chuck Jones

and Michael Maltese. Or take the film’s locale, which plays on Bugs Bunny’s famous wrong turns underground. (Speaking of which: My personal favorite in-joke is a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of Albuquerque’s commuter rail, which is actually called Rail Runner — and features a handsome bird on its engines.) The film moves fast and is also very funny. Among the great gags is an answering machine at AJ&M, which generally works with animated plaintiffs: “If you’ve been hit by a falling anvil, press 1” — plus other options for catapults and plummeting pianos, etc. But the movie’s greatest strength is its plot. The writers have a good hook in their canine lawsuit; but then they actually go somewhere with it, as the firm is guilty of much more than just faulty products. And on top of that, Coyote vs. Acme ultimately winds up pulling your heartstrings, as the chief attorney and his conniving client finally make peace; and then … well, I won’t reveal what happens at the end in Washington, DC — except to say that it’s not hard to foresee, yet totally counterintuitive. So the film winds up being both nostalgic and modern, funny but heart-felt and farcical yet character-driven. Sadly, it is not making a ton of money, and might disappear from theaters by the time you read this. Which is puzzling. Like those who campaigned for its release, I tawt I taw a pwetty dood movie.

ast week, I talked about balance. I talked about how being intentional with what you eat and consistently making healthier choices can help you take control of your nutrition and hopefully start feeling better. So, I thought this week I would follow that up with something a little more practical. Let’s talk about what you can actually eat. One of the biggest stigmas around eating healthy is that it has to be expensive, complicated, or time-consuming. I don’t think that’s true. You don’t need some fancy meal plan. You don’t need to spend hours meal prepping every Sunday. And you definitely don’t need to eat foods you hate. I thought I would give you a simple breakfast, lunch, and dinner that I enjoy and that can easily fit into a reasonable calorie goal depending on your individual needs. Breakfast: Probably my favorite meal of the day. Four eggs cooked with a low-calorie cooking spray, four pieces of turkey bacon, and an English muffin with some light butter. Nothing fancy. It tastes good, has plenty of protein, and doesn’t take long to make.

Lunch: Grilled chicken, a whole bag of frozen vegetables, and a protein yogurt. Again, pretty simple. Frozen vegetables are something I love because they’re cheap, easy to make, and you don’t have to worry about them going bad in your refrigerator three days after you buy them. Dinner: Steak, vegetables, a salad, and a baked potato. Yes, you can eat steak and a baked potato while trying to eat healthy. That’s another thing I think people sometimes get wrong. Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to live on salads and grilled chicken every single day. You can eat all of the meals I just mentioned and still stay within your goals. The part you have to pay attention to is everything we sometimes forget to count — Dressings, cheese, butter, oil, sauces, toppings. Those things aren’t necessarily bad either, but the calories can add up pretty quickly without you realizing it. There is one other thing I’ve learned that has really helped me. Don’t only look at your nutrition one day at a time. Sometimes it can be easier to look at the entire week. I think people get into trouble when

they set a calorie goal, go over it one day, and immediately think, “Well, I blew it.” Then one bad meal turns into a bad day. A bad day turns into a bad weekend. And suddenly you’re telling yourself you’ll start Jimmy over again Monday. Webb III You don’t have to do that. If you eat a little more than you planned one day, acknowledge it and move on. Be a little more mindful over the next few days and keep your overall week moving in the right direction. I heard an analogy once that explains this perfectly. If you’re holding a drink and accidentally spill a little bit, what do you do? You clean it up and keep drinking what’s left. You wouldn’t say, “Well, I already spilled some,” and dump the rest of the drink on the floor. So why do we sometimes do that with our nutrition? One meal doesn’t have to turn into an entire weekend of bad choices. The last warning I have is about cheat days. I actually think having a cheat meal every once in a while can be a good thing if you do it correctly. Eat something you’ve been craving. Enjoy it.

Then get back to your normal routine. A cheat meal and a cheat day, however, are two very different things. Let’s say you’re eating in a 500-calorie deficit for six days. That’s roughly a 3,000-calorie deficit. Then Saturday comes and you decide it’s your cheat day. If you somehow eat around 3,000 calories above your maintenance needs that day, you have basically wiped out the deficit you worked all week to create. That’s why understanding the bigger picture matters. Have the pizza. Get the ice cream. Go out to dinner with your family. Enjoy yourself. Just don’t let one meal turn into an entire day of eating everything in sight because you think you’ll “start again tomorrow.” Again, it all comes back to the same word I talked about last week — balance. You don’t have to eat perfectly every day to make progress. You don’t have to give up the foods you love. And you certainly don’t need to beat yourself up because you ate a little more than you planned. Pay attention. Make good choices more often than not. Enjoy the foods you love in moderation. Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Two Lost Sons: Part 1

uke 15 is an amazing passage of Scripture. The first two verses set the context: Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” In response to the presence of broken sinners and the proud, holier-than-thou crowd, Jesus tells three stories about being lost — and then found. It is a fascinating passage that gives us direct access to the heart of our heavenly Father. The first story is about a lost sheep: Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. The second story is about a lost coin: Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?

And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.” In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. The third story is about two lost sons: There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So, he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country, and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So, he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When he came to his senses, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.” So, he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said

to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So, they began to celebrate. Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So, he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. “Your brother has come,” he replied, “and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.” The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So, his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!” The father replied, “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”

The consistent theme in all three stories is the rejoicing that takes place when the lost is found. Clearly, your heavenly Father wants you to know how much he values you. In the story of the lost sheep and the lost coin, the owner puts forth a major effort to find what was lost. The story of the two lost sons is different. The father does not go looking for the sons. That’s significant — and we don’t want to overlook that vital detail. You may be thinking, “Hartzell, you knucklehead, there was only one lost son. It was the younger one. The older son was still at home. Why are you referring to both sons as being lost?” Thanks for asking. The older son was just as lost as his younger brother — he just didn’t know it. Again, the context of the passage is the two groups Jesus was teaching: the Prodigals (the tax collectors and sinners) and the Older Brothers (the holier-than-thou religious leaders). They were both lost. The tax collectors and sinners knew they were lost, and they just wanted to be with Jesus. The religious leaders didn’t think they were lost, and they just wanted to kill Jesus. You tell me, which group was more lost? Exactly. They were both lost — and lost is lost. (Stay tuned for Part 2 next week.)

African Children’s Choir “Light Your World” Tour Coming to Williamsport

illiamsport will welcome the internationally acclaimed African Children’s Choir on Friday, October 2, 2026, for a 7 p.m. performance at City Church, 36 E. Fourth St. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Community members are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited to 250 guests. Both seating and parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The stop is part of the Choir’s “Light Your

World” tour, a series of performances that will take the children across the United States from September 2026 through May 2027. According to the Choir’s tour information, the Williamsport appearance is one of several Pennsylvania dates scheduled in October, and no tickets or reservations are required for listed events. The organization encourages guests to come early, enjoy the music, and take part in an evening built around worship, storytelling, and hope.

For more than four decades, the African Children’s Choir has used music as a doorway to education, care, and opportunity for children from vulnerable backgrounds. Audiences can expect a night of singing, movement, testimony, and shared worship that highlights the potential of each child. Through song and dance, the children con-

vey a message of resilience, faith, and joy despite the hardships many have faced early in life. The African Children’s Choir is composed of children from vulnerable backgrounds across Africa, generally between the ages of 8 and 12. Many have lacked reliable access to education and have experienced circumstances no child should have to carry. Through the Choir, they receive opportunities for schooling, personal growth, leadership development, and international exposure. When they return home, the goal is for each child to continue learning and eventually become a source of positive change within his or her family and community. “The African Children’s Choir proves just how powerful music can be,” said Tina Sipp, Choir Manager. “These concerts not only provide hope and encouragement to our audiences, but they offer the children life-changing experiences that help shape them into future leaders.” That sense of shared transformation is part of why City Church is hosting the Choir. Dr. Raphael Mnkandhla, Lead Pastor of City Church, said the event reflects the congregation’s desire to care for vulnerable children both locally and globally. “City Church has always had a heart for those who are vulnerable, especially children,” he said. “Hosting the African Children’s Choir is another way we can extend that care beyond our local community and help serve vulnerable children around the world.” For Mnkandhla, the concert is an opportunity for Williamsport and surrounding communities to participate in a global mission

The impact of the organization extends beyond the stage. Music for Life provides education and support intended to help children rise above difficult circumstances and return to their communities with confidence, skills, and vision. The children’s performances are not presented as charity entertainment, but as a living testimony to what can happen when vulnerable children are seen, supported, and encouraged. Their presence on stage points to the broader mission of Music for Life which is helping children break cycles of poverty and equipping them to become leaders who can strengthen their communities for years to come. The Choir’s story began in the 1980s, when founder Ray Barnett encountered a Ugandan child, whose song became a symbol of dignity and hope in the middle of hardship. That moment grew into a ministry that has since reached thousands of children through touring choirs, schools, and outreach programs. Today, the African Children’s Choir continues to travel as an ambassador for children whose stories might otherwise go unheard.

f you did a survey of older hunters, I bet most began their hunting days by tramping the woods in search of squirrels. They were certainly an upland game that I targeted in my early days of hunting. Today, there seems to be less interest in spending time hunting squirrels, yet there remain many good reasons to hunt them. While dove season and the early geese season began earlier this month, the squirrel season in Pennsylvania began on Saturday, September 12, giving hunters an early opportunity to spend time in our hardwood forests. Any time you can be in the woods in pursuit of old bushytail, you can also be scouting out places to hunt for fall turkeys, deer, or other game as well. Squirrel hunting is one of the greatest opportunities to mentor a youth or introduce a new adult hunter to the sport. head out. Squirrels are tree dwellers that can be found throughout our Northcentral Pennsylvania hardwood forests. While they will eat the nuts of a beech tree, their preference as a food source is the acorn, with white oak acorns being their favorite. Unfortunately for farmers, they also can readily be found raiding nearby cornfields. If you can find a spot at the edge of a stand of white oak trees that lies next to a cornfield, you will be in a prime spot for squirrel hunting. Combine those two factors with a small stream meandering through, and you should have good success. Gray squirrels often begin moving about before sunrise and are active throughout the day. Always alert to possible predation, they rarely stray too far from a nearby tree where they can quickly climb to safety. If you are sitting nearby, occasionally rustling the leaves with your hand or a stick will simulate a turkey scratching or a squirrel digging in the leaves and will tend to convince them that the coast is clear and help lure them out into the open.

Combine the onion, celery, garlic, broth, pepper, salt, and squirrel in a large pot and bring to a boil; simmer until meat is very tender and easily removed from bones. Debone the meat and set aside; reserve one cup of cooking liquid. Fit the bottom crust into a pie pan. Combine the meat, vegetables, and reserved broth and cornstarch in a bowl and mix well; spoon the mixture into the pie shell. Top with the second crust, press the edges to seal, and cut vents in the top for steam to escape. Bake at 350 degrees until the crust is browned, about 1 hour. ENJOY!

Sitting in a grove of white oak trees or next to a field of standing corn can be productive throughout the day, and the method of spot and stalk can be very effective as well. Take your time as you ease through the woods, stopping often to survey the area or listen for nearby squirrels. Hunting squirrels is all about patience. You don’t need to rush and shoot at a moving target; wait until the squirrel stops before aiming. Carry a few small rocks in your pocket. If you know there is a squirrel on the backside of a nearby tree, toss a rock beyond the tree – on the side where the squirrel is staying – and he just might scurry around to your side of the tree, presenting a shot opportunity. Since the preferred methods of hunting bushytails are either sitting or slowly walking as you spot and stalk, mentoring a youth while squirrel hunting will provide an excellent chance to share time talking about firearm safety, ethical hunting methods, woodsmanship, and all the many facets of spending time in the woods that make hunting such an enjoyable and rewarding pursuit. For a mentored youth, one of the ideal firearms is a .22 rifle topped with a 4-power scope. The lack of recoil makes it a preferred introductory

So, how will all of this unusual rainfall affect our “fall fishing?” I suspect once things settle down, and I hope that happens, things will get back to normal. I think there is still a lot of good fishing opportunities out there, but we have to get over this rain-filled hump until we start to see normal fall conditions again. I’m still looking forward to some dry fly fishing on one of our local trout streams, and I would love to work some surface lures on the Susquehanna River for some of those great fighting smallmouth bass.
