From the Editor…
Breast Cancer Awareness Month Early Detection is Key
A
ccording to breastcancer.org, “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign that’s held every October. The month aims to promote screening and reduce the risk of the disease, which affects 2.4 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs designed to: – Support people diagnosed with breast cancer, including those with metastatic breast cancer. – Educate people about breast cancer risk factors. – Motivate people to learn about their risk of breast cancer. – Raise money for breast cancer research. – Encourage people to go for regular breast cancer screening — for women, regular scans begin at age 40 or earlier, depending on personal breast cancer risk.” As the World Health Organization notes, “Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family and a unique journey. People may face different challenges depending on their diagnosis, treatment, support networks and access to care.
Every person affected by breast cancer deserves to be, supported and treated with dignity. And everyone, wherever they live, should have access to the care they need.” And that message hits home. Because breast cancer doesn’t look the same for everyone — but it does touch so many lives. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation: – 1 in 8 women, or approximately 13% of the female population in the U.S., will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. – Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers. Approximately 30 of all new female cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer. On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. – Approximately 66% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage, before cancer has spread outside of the breast, when it is easiest to treat. – The 5-year relative survival rate for earlystage cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is over 99%. Approximately 10-15 of women diagnosed have a family history of breast
Right) Again, we all know that “early detection is key.” But actually getting that mammogram? Sometimes that’s the hardest part. Between the cost, confusion about referrals, and just not knowing where to start, it can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF): f you re under 40, you may need a doctor’s referral. f you re 40 or older, you usually can schedule your screening mammogram directly — no referral needed. Here’s what to ask for: – Screening mammogram – your routine yearly check when you have no symptoms. – Diagnostic mammogram – for any symptoms or follow-up on a previous abnormal result. Tip: Diagnostic mammograms can cost more, so

The twins. Your tatas. If that makes you uncomfortable… well, you know what? Breast cancer is pretty dang uncomfortable, so suck it up buttercup, because is super important information. Self-exams are your front line of defense — quick, easy, and something only you can do. No one knows your body better than you. Here’s how to make it a habit: – Do your self-exam once a month. – Pick a date you’ll remember — the 1st, the 15th, whatever works. And remember: self-exams don’t replace mammograms, they’re just another layer of awareness. 1. Visual inspection: With your shirt and bra removed, stand in front of a mirror. Put your arms down by your sides. Look for any changes in breast shape, breast swelling, dimpling in the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, raise your arms high overhead and look for the same things. Finally, put your hands on your hips and press rmly to make your chest muscles ex. Look for the same changes again. e sure to look at both breasts.

With the pads of your three middle ngers, press on every part of one breast. Use light pressure, then medium, then rm. Feel for any lumps, thick spots, or other changes. A circular pattern may help you make sure you hit every spot. Then, press the tissue under the arm. Be sure to check under the areola and then s ueeze the nipple gently to check for discharge. Repeat the steps on the other side of your body. 3. Manual inspection while lying down: When you lie down, your breast tissue spreads more evenly. This is a good position to feel for changes, especially if your breasts are large. Lie down and put a pillow under your right shoulder. Place your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, apply the same techni ue as step 2, using the pads of your ngers to press all parts of the breast tissue and under your arm. Tidal Wave is Latest Book By Local Author Adam Makos he air raid on the oil re neries at Ploesti, Romania, is one of the most important and costly air raids by the United States Army Air Forces during World War . This largely overlooked and forgotten raid is highlighted in a vivid manner in local author Adam Makos new book, Tidal Wave. Makos is the author of several previous World War -themed books, including Higher Call, Voices of the acific and Spearhead. be only one survivor, and he was still alive: Ernie Poulson. And by chance, Ernie was the copilot on the bomber that landed on the princess’s estate. He was 97. What were the odds that he would be the last known survivor? This story feels written in the stars.” Before you worked on this book, had you ever heard of the raid on Ploesti? “I had heard of the famous raid. It’s a legend in military history. It reads like a movie script: in the summer of 1943, every B-24 bomber on that side of the Atlantic was gathered in one place, Benghazi, Libya, to launch a secret mission that could shorten the war dramatically and cripple Hitler’s war machine: the destruction of the oil re neries that supplied 30 of his oil. The Ploesti raid, Operation Tidal Wave, was the most heroic and highly decorated American air mission in history. Five Medals of Honor were awarded from this mission, three of them posthumously, which gives you an inkling of the danger the raid entailed.

There were 56 Distinguished Service Crosses, our nation’s second-highest award for valor. And every man who ew it was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This was the single greatest American mission in history, the most bloody, and the most decorated. In the medal department, it even rivals D-Day, and that was an entire invasion of a continent.” What type of research and sources did you have to use in preparation of this book? “The number one source was Ernie himself. At rst, he was reluctant to tell his story. He had lost his wife. He had lived a full life. Why bother going back into the past? He had already lived an absolutely astounding wartime journey. But we told him, this will be about all the guys. Through your story and the story of your crew, we can tell the story of all the men who ew in, some of whom died in that epic raid, and the untold aftermath: what happened to the men who were shot down? what Ernie’s story included. Not only was his rookie crew on their second mission when they ew in the Ploesti raid, the worst second mission a crew could ask for, but they didn’t make it home. They were shot down, and he would go on to experience the strangest POW experience of World War , when he and 110 other men were imprisoned in an Alpine lodge high in the Transylvanian Alps. What began as something like “Hogan’s Heroes,” in the end carried all the seriousness and life-and-death stakes of The Great Escape. That’s what got Ernie to open his door to us: this book would be a tribute to every man who climbed into a B-24 on August 1, 1943, and steered north for Romania. From there, we met with the families of each of Ernie’s crew, and it turned out the men had left behind an incredible document written in 1944. After the survivors made it to England, while they were waiting to be debriefed, each man wrote down his memories of the operation. Every survivor recounted his experience on the great raid, from the navigator to the tail gunner. This was on their own. t wasn t for a medal
inquiry or an after-action report. The pilot of the bomber typed it all up, and that came to us from his daughter. With that as a starting point, the book was already in an amazing place.” During your research, was there something that surprised you about the story? oing into this book, ust thought of Romania as an Axis partner. What discovered, and what was surprising, was that the Romanians liked the Americans. When Ernie made a run for it from his crashed bomber, he was eventually captured and imprisoned in a cistern below ground. Then the trapdoor opened, and he heard those fateful words spoken in English: “Hello, boys.” That was his rst meeting with Princess atherine arad a. happy not to have another drop of oil reach Hitler. She didn’t blame them for coming there and bombing the Romanian re neries. The Romanians liked Americans. They had been our ally in World War I. They had come to know Americans in the interwar years from our engineers who ran the re neries before the war. They taught Romanian kids to play baseball. The Romanian people wanted to watch movies like one with the Wind, which was banned by the dictatorship. And how they came to be on the side of Hitler was a stroke of terrible luck. The Russians had stolen some of their ancestral lands, and Romania was too powerless to take them back. Hitler saw an opportunity. He pledged to help them if they would form an alliance and sell him the oil he needed. What he did next surprised his ally. He marched in with his troops and took over their re neries and paid them in airplanes and tanks, not money. He helped them liberate their land from the Russians, and then he urged Romania to come with him into his war on the Eastern
Front. Suddenly the whole nation was in a tough spot they had reclaimed their land from Stalin, but what would happen if Hitler lost the war Stalin would be coming at them with a vengeance. That s how Romania plunged itself into World War . TIDAL WAVE tanks ran out of gas in the Ardennes Forest, and young erman ghter pilots were being sent into battle with 12 hours of ight time, because Germany was left without gasoline.” Tidal Wave was ultimately a victory. It just took a year to show itself. “ How does this book compare with your previous books? This book shares the common theme of enemies who become friends: humanity in wartime. But this book takes it to a whole new level. Not only is Princess arad a a Romanian princess who helped our POWs survive captivity there, but there was King Michael, the 21-yearold king of Romania, who sat in Ernie s crashed bomber and made a vow to help the American crew. And help them he did. Eventually, he would take on the dictatorship and the alliance with Hitler and pull his nation out of World War II. And then there is the Romanian ghter ace. We follow a prince dueling Soviet ghters on the Eastern Front, but he too loved Americans, and when it came to ghting them, he was searching for a way out. One day he would nd himself on our side, ghting against the ermans he had once own
with. The cast of characters in this book goes beyond a simple friendship between foes. Each of these historical gures could have a movie or a miniseries made about them, and here it’s all wrapped up in one book.” What future book projects are you looking at? m going to continue writing books about World War because there s something enthralling about the era: the clear-cut good versus evil, and the fact that we were all united as one country ghting for our survival and the survival of the world. World War II was probably the last time that Americans fully agreed about something and showed the power of our unity.” rst knew about the raid on Ploesti as a nine-year-old reading an American Heritage ook called The Air War. Adam has written a powerful and compelling work that humanizes and vividly brings to life that raid and its aftermath. I would highly recommend it. Adam will have a book signing at the Otto ookstore on Sunday, November 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. e sure to contact Otto s if you wish to pre-order the book for Adam to sign.

FAITH
is sixty, or even eighty years old. Peter wasn’t writing to toddlers; he was writing to adults who also happened to be spiritual infants. He encouraged them, like newborn babies, to crave pure spiritual milk so they could grow up in their salvation. This is sometimes a challenge in discipleship. It can be hard for full-grown adults to submit to formation-level discipleship. It’s a pride issue. Peter tells them to let go of pride and humbly pursue the basics of the Christian faith. He understood the value of formationlevel discipleship, and warned them not to skip it. We would be wise to humbly heed his warning – and churches would be wise to provide formation-level discipleship for adults. Now that we have established the value and purpose of formation-level discipleship, we also need to identify a potential discipleship trap. While formation has a purpose, it is not the destination. Parents know how frustrating it would be to have their child remain in the formation stage. It would be exhausting! We expect our kids to start moving out of the formation stage as soon as they begin displaying critical thinking and free will. Most parents have an age-goal for their children to eat solid food, walk, graduate from diapers, count to ten, recite the alphabet, and begin making their own bed. Most preschools won’t accept a three-year-old that isn’t pottytrained. Why? Because they don’t want to mess with that!
Paul warns about the formation discipleship trap in I Corinthians 3:1-3, Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly — mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. The writer of Hebrews also identi es this trap, We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so. Hebrews 5:11-6:3. Christian, are you trapped in the formation stage? Are you fussing over things that should already be settled? Is endless debate your way of shirking your responsibilities? Do you like being a spiritual baby and being fawned over by the church? Stop it. It’s time to grow up and take responsibility for yourself. There are infant believers coming in behind you and they need your help. Grow up! In the next article we’ll focus on level two of discipleship: conformation.

County Hall Corner: Filling the Gaps By Blair Steward
T
he Lycoming County Commissioners met on October 8th to handle staffing changes, finalize a land sale, and discuss an uncomfortable financial reality: taxpayers pay for both sides of every trial that goes to completion. The commissioners talked openly about how much trials cost. When a case goes all the way through the court system, the county picks up the bill for the prosecution and the defense. It is expensive. A plea deal would be cheaper for the county budget. Everyone in the room knows that. But the commissioners made clear that saving money cannot be the deciding factor. The primary obligation is making sure justice happens for the families of victims. That means sometimes the county pays for a full trial even when a cheaper option exists. The board finalized the sale of two county-owned land parcels on Beach Road, right next to the County Farm. Parcel 164 and Parcel 59 will bring $315,000 into the county. The sale is pending a final review by the county solicitor, so a closing date has not been set yet. Every dollar from this sale will go straight into farm improvements. The exact nature of those projects was not
detailed at the meeting, but the commitment is clear: the money stays at the farm. Angela Scocchera was promoted to fulltime procurement and grant officer at an annual salary of $41,212. Her new role fills an existing vacancy without expanding the county payroll or creating a brand new position. The commissioners also approved staffing changes at the pre-release center, a county facility that manages specialized supervision programs. Four supervisor positions needed to be filled after prior staff departures. Three new hires came on board: Zachery Miller, Candida Kingston, and Lutricia Ellman. Sean Diggan transferred from an internal county position to fill the fourth supervisor role. All four positions are full-time union jobs paying $20.70 per hour. These are not new positions either. They fill gaps left by people who moved on. Roger Jarrett was appointed to the industrial authority board for a five-year term running from January 1st, 2027, through December 31st, 2031. His appointment ensures community representation on the board continues. The next regular public meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on October 22nd, on the third floor of the Third Street Plaza at 33 West Third Street in Williamsport.

The partnership will also put agricultural education into real-world terms. Students may know that farms surround their communities, but eating a meal sourced from a nearby operation creates a clearer connection between land, livestock, food preparation, and nutrition. Because the Ulrichs are teachers as well as farmers, the relationship will help students understand how management decisions affect animal care, soil, water, and product quality. For districts, the local beef provides a protein option while demonstrating support for the regional economy. For Ulrich Farm, school purchasing broadens the customer base beyond retail sales and community events. For families and residents, the arrangement offers greater transparency because the producer, production practices, and local impact are easier to identify than they are in a long, anonymous supply chain. Ulrich Farm’s expanded partnership shows why farm-to-school programs work best when procurement support, producer opportunity, and education move together. The 5050 subsidy lowers the cost barrier for districts without shifting that burden to the farmer. Monthly deliveries give cafeteria teams a predictable planning rhythm. With five districts participating, the agreement is a strong, local example of the Pennsylvania Beef Council’s statewide approach. Farms establish a fair price, schools pay half, grant funding pays half, and Nutrition Inc. helps locally raised beef reach students on a recurring schedule. The result connects school nutrition, agricultural education and regional economic support in one practical program.
27 • Webb Weekly October 21, 2026
ported program pays the other $500. The producer still receives the full established price, but the subsidy closes the gap between that price and what a school meal budget can absorb. The cost-share model grew from Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture support through the Agricultural Promotion Matching Grant Program. In March 2026, the department reported a $49,000 investment in PA Beef to PA Schools. The Pennsylvania Beef Council later announced a USDA Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant to expand local-beef access, strengthen relationships among schools, producers, processors and distributors, and support nutrition and agricultural education. The Council’s announcement did not state the amount of its award. These investments address challenges that do not arise in ordinary direct-to-consumer sales. Schools need products delivered on schedule, processed in practical forms, priced within meal-program budgets, and handled under applicable food-safety requirements. Farmers need lead time, reliable purchasing commitments and access to processing. Grant-supported coordination helps the participants solve those logistical problems together. Ulrich Farm’s verified commitment is monthly service to Montgomery Area, South Williamsport Area, Muncy, East Lycoming and Montoursville. Nutrition Inc.’s continued sourcing helps make the arrangement possible. Public announcements do not provide a pound figure, number of cases, or number of cattle for each delivery, so quantities will depend on menus, enrollment, purchasing schedules and food-service needs.

berserk is something I’ll admit is a terrible habit of mine — I don’t listen to the details of what he says. I get the gist of his commentary, but fail to come away with any meaningful speci cs that might contribute to a deeper understanding of what he’s expressing at any given moment. I usually chalk it up to being glued to my phone, my computer or whatever playoff game happens to be airing at the time. It’s true — I don’t always attend to what is being said. What can I say — I’m easily distracted. As a result, he’s relegated to repeat a ridiculous number of utterances — well, his half of them anyway, which can lead to madness, I’m told. On a related note, we both get aggravated because we knowingly choose to hold entire conversations when we’re halfway across the house from each other, shouting into the void in the hopes that our message will be received. Mind you, we don’t move closer to one another we ust shout louder, repeating the insanity that’s wrapped in denial. Welcome to my world. It’s where I live (probably driving my husband crazy). Apparently, I am also an overachiever when it comes to asking mindless questions — a trait that my spouse considers to be the height of exasperation. He even has a name for me related to my special talents in that arena — the Question Queen. But I’ve got news for him; I’m not insulted by it. Instead, I’ve embraced the title and try to pepper him with even more questions than he thought humanly possible. He’s remarked on more than one occasion that he’s tried to anticipate which particular questions ll re in his direction upon his return from being out, and, of course, the rst three are ones he never imagined. his recurring “Weird Words” column aims to unpack oddball vocab like pogonip, putz, gleet, dik-dik and boustrophedon. But you can’t just keep trotting out such lists over and over, say 138 times in a row — which is where we’re at after more than three years. So every now and then, we dip into some other word-related topic: spelling, pronunciation, dictionaries, grammar — and of course, etymology, which studies where a word comes from, and how it’s changed over the years. That’s what we’re looking at just now, with a somewhat obscure phenomenon called folk etymolog y. As we saw last week, this is a process in which a strange word evolves into something both similar and more familiar — leading folks to assume an etymological connection, even though there isn’t one. Take crayfi sh, for instance: That used to be crevis, from the German krebis, meaning “crab.” But it’s such an odd term that speakers gradually changed the pronunciation so it would sound like what it meant (an underwater creature). In other words: etymology by … folks. Our previous installment also covered belfry (which doesn’t come from “bell”), andirons (not from “iron”) and female (not a su xed form
of “male”). Here are more: Hangnail, that vexing ap of skin on your nger, is not related to either hang or fingernail. nstead, the rst syllable was originally ang-, meaning “painful,” while the latter referred to the type of nail you hammer — due to the way the ngernail s shape resembles a nailhead. And headlong does not come from long, but rather -ling, a now-obsolete su x meaning in that direction or manner. (This su x has other unrelated meanings that we do still use — as in earthling and duckling.) The “direction” sense of -ling was also found in sideling, which likewise changed into the more familiar-sounding sidelong. Perhaps the weirdest instance in this week’s list is cockroach, which was Anglicized from the Spanish cucaracha (yes, like the famous Spanish folk song). English speakers somehow adapted this to sound like the better-known cock (chicken) and roach (a type of sh). Hmmm. f you know that the watergoing type of roach includes minnows, you can see some similarity there; but where the chicken came from, I don’t know. Maybe it was crossing the road? Penthouse, as you may now be guessing, is not connected to house, but is a reformulation of the Middle English pentis, which in turn is related to append and appendix — in the sense of something extra added on.

One you may not have heard is sparrowgrass, a slang term for asparagus. Of course, it’s just a folk pronunciation, since that vegetable is certainly not a type of grass (though for some of us, it doesn’t really taste much better). And nally Surround is linguistically unrelated to round (as in all around ). The rare Latin base und- means wave (as in “undulate”); and if you again add “super,” you get something like “water all over” — which would certainly surround you (Apparently, the P in “super” dropped out at some point.) That s all, folks for folk etymology, anyway. This column owes a debt to the terri c Merriam-Webster website, as well as Wikipedia and a grand old text called English Words from Greek and Latin Elements. See you here again soon.

Meanwhile, you may have noticed that sacrilegious is not spelled like religion — because it doesn’t actually contain that word. In fact, it combines two other Latin roots: sacr, meaning “sacred,” and legere, meaning “to steal”; it originally had to do with plundering temples or graves. Shame-faced, likewise, is not from face, but was initially shamefast it employed the su x -fast, meaning rmly xed (as in steadfast). I guess in this case, the shame felt particularly tough to get rid of…. Along the same lines, sovereign seems like it came from reign, since both terms have to do with primary oversight; but in truth, our English word derives from the Old French soverain (with no ) it s ultimately related to the common Latin pre x super (as in over or “above”).

so as not to clash. Remember, contrast creates interest, while clashing causes disruption. If you’re feeling like disrupting a bit here in your look, go for it with dress + pants + vest. I do not recommend this formula for out tting novices. This is for the triedand-true out tter because to disrupt in a stylish and not foolish way takes the right combo of pieces, t, silhouette, and fabric. So, approach with caution with a shirtdress (which acts like a button-up), trousers, and a suit or sweater vest. A dress like J.Jill’s A-Line Shirtdress in black and white stripes provides some length and drama when paired with a baggy-ish full-leg pant like Halara’s High Waisted Zipper Pocket Wide Leg Work Pants in a mirrored black and white stripe. Create some shape and balance the proportions with a tailored vest. A shorter version like Madewell’s Tucked Mini Shirtdress can work with a more cropped tted trouser and a more casual knit vest. Again, this formula is not for the faint of heart; out t with care. There are a few more formulas to share in part 2, but for the time being, think about these looks as being less about speci c pieces and more about combinations. This styling approach works best with what’s already hanging in your closet.

coziness of a cardigan with sophisticated round sunnies like Ray-Ban Women’s Sunglasses available at Macy’s and currently on clearance. A great pair of sunglasses will also add polish to any look. As for a leather bag, if you don’t already have one, look to thrift stores or secondhand resellers for mid-level designer bags at a bargain. From bags to stripes. Striped tees and shirts can be quite the workhorse in out t formulas if you remember to wear them. Stripe shirt + black pants + black blazer. A black blazer and a striped tee might be the most reliable out t formula out there. Swapping jeans for black wide-leg trousers makes it a touch more polished for an o ce setting without losing any of the ease. To get a bit more use out of some summer pieces, go for a striped shirt linen pull-on pant ballet at. Or, if you’ve put away your linen for the season, swap in a jogger instead. I love the combination of a classic blackand-white striped shirt with an easy, solid-colored, preferably black, but a contrasting shade like red or sky-blue works, pant. And then either a popof-color at or a patterned at, like an animal print. Old Navy s Soft-Knit Pointed-Toe Ballet Flat in leopard will contrast nicely with a graphic striped tee, with the solid bottom giving space

illiamsport High School students think the voting age should stay where it is, and they do not want to enter into politics, and they think that politicians are as honest as anybody else. These opinions were revealed in a cross-section poll in a series of Institute of Student Opinion surveys sponsored by Scholastic Magazine. Three questions were asked: “Do you think the voting age should be lowered to 18?” “In choosing possible careers for yourself would you choose politics?” The third was five statements concerning the characteristics of people in politics from which the student was
asked to choose one. Of the students participating in the poll, 92 thought the voting age should be lowered to 18. 119 thought it should not be. One even ventured to say that he thought it should be raised. There were four students who had no opinion. The question brought mostly the same reply. Seventeen of the 213 would choose politics as a career, 183 would not. The third question as mention before, consisted of five questions of which the students were asked to choose one. The students were asked indirectly if they thought politicians were corrupt and out for easy money, or moral integrity was a high as anyone else. The majority of the students (85 out of 203) voted for the idea that politicians were as honest as anyone else.

UPMC Expert: Could a Vaccine Help Prevent Breast Cancer? Susan Branton, M.D., medical director, UPMC Magee-Womens, Breast Health Center
V
accines have helped prevent many serious illnesses. Now, researchers are studying whether a vaccine could also help stop certain breast cancers before they develop. A rst-of-its-kind clinical trial from UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh is examining whether a vaccine can produce an immune response in women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. The study began in Pittsburgh in 2024 and expanded to central Pennsylvania in 2026. Often called Stage 0 breast cancer, DCIS occurs when abnormal cells are found inside a milk duct but have not spread into the surrounding breast tissue. Although DCIS is not invasive, it can progress to invasive breast cancer in some patients. Surgery to remove the abnormal cells is generally the rst line of treatment. The vaccine being studied is not intended to replace surgery. Instead, researchers are evaluating whether it can strengthen the body’s immune response and help prevent DCIS from developing into invasive cancer or returning later. The investigational vaccine
is given in three doses. Participants are randomly assigned to different study groups. Those assigned to the vaccine group receive three doses before undergoing the standard recommended surgery. After surgery, researchers can examine the removed tissue and evaluate how the immune system responded. Participants will then be monitored for years to determine whether the abnormal cells return. This is an early and carefully controlled step in the research process. The trial will help researchers better understand the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness. f the ndings are promising, the study may expand to include more women at additional cancer centers. The trial is open only to a speci c group of patients. Potential participants must be women age 50 or older who are postmenopausal and have been diagnosed with early-stage S. The clinical research team must review each patient’s medical history and circumstances to determine eligibility. The vaccine is not currently available to the general public, nor is it intended for individuals who have not been diagnosed with DCIS. It is important to view this research as a promising possibility rather than an established way to prevent breast cancer.

Clinical trials play an essential role in advancing cancer care. Many treatments used today were rst evaluated through carefully designed studies. Trials allow researchers to study new treatments, diagnostic tools and preventive approaches while closely monitoring patient safety. Participation is voluntary, and patients receive information about a study’s purpose, possible bene ts, potential risks and other treatment options before deciding whether to enroll. While vaccine research represents an exciting area of study, it does not change the importance of established breast health practices. Women should talk with their health care provider about their personal risk factors, family history and recommended screening

Traveling can be complicated sometimes, and in the new book, “Shadow Before the Flame” by Catherine Grace Katz, it can be deadly, too. magine a silent killer oating above you, ready to strike. Surely, that reality terrorized Germany’s enemies during the Great War, as they were bombed by a silent zeppelin overhead. But after the war and with strides made in airplane technology, the ermans had to nd new uses for the airships: instead of using them for warfare, they realized that zeppelins were also suited for civilian use. Passengers were thrilled by dirigibles; they could see things
one had seen before. Zeppelins seemed to be a safer way to travel than by car or by plane; certainly, they were faster. The Germans created a whole eet of them, including the Hindenburg, the pride of Germany. She was the largest dirigible ever built, and the most luxurious, almost like an ocean liner. The Hindenburg was never meant for war; says Katz, the Germans intended it for an aviation rst regular commercial passenger service between Europe and the United States.” The problem was that “only two gases… could lift a dirigible as large as the Hindenburg: hydrogen and helium.” The U.S. had the corner on the latter; Germany was, therefore, “forced… to use ammable hydrogen as the only available alternative.” Still, engineers were able to make hydrogen safe, and tickets on the Hindenburg were a hot commodity. Wealthy passengers were attracted by its luxury. Americans working in Germany hoped to leave before tensions heated up. The speed of travel was a bonus; the Hindenburg was supposed to reach New Jersey in record time, much faster than an airplane.

complex. That said, the focus here on the people aboard the Hindenburg keeps readers around, even when the technical information can be daunting. Katz brings readers into the lives of those on the dirigible, and she helps readers to understand why the Hindenburg is historically important, and how the tragedy of it impacted what happened afterward. And it did. But moments after it arrived, just before it moored, passengers “heard what sounded like a pop…” Based entirely on the above, you might understand that “Shadow Before the Flame” is not, by any means, an easy, breezy fall read. No, it’s righteously a deep and detailed history; indeed, anything less than what’s inside would do this story a disservice, and readers of this sort of genre would be unhappy with a watered-down narrative. Author Catherine Grace Katz has sprinkled a bit of pop culture here and there that embellishes things some, but most of this book is quite

The Roving Sportsman… Mentored Youth Hunting Opportunities By Jon Pries

or an experienced hunter, one of the most valuable ways we can spend our time is to mentor a new youth hunter. It can truly be a rewarding experience to take a young, eager novice and nurture them through the process of becoming a safe, ethical, and knowledgeable hunter. It will be an activity that both you and the youth will remember for years. It was in 2006 that a group of visionary hunters and conservationists sat at a round table at the Pennsylvania Game ommission o ce and developed the outline for a Mentored Youth Hunting Program. It was quickly recognized as a valuable tool to instill safety and ethics in new young hunters and to aid in recruiting new hunters into our ranks. The bill introducing the program was signed by Governor Ed Rendell that same year. Having watched the success of the program here in Pennsylvania, today more than 34 other states have adopted their own programs for mentoring youth
hunters. Again, citing the success of the Mentored Youth Hunting Program, here in Pennsylvania the concept of the program has continued to expand and today even includes provisions for mentoring new adult hunters. Currently, mentored hunters are not required to take a Hunter-Trapper Education class before obtaining a permit to hunt through the program. Mentored hunters ages 12 or older may participate in the program for a maximum of three license years. After that period, they must obtain a license to hunt. Individuals who participate in the mentored program for at least three years before turning 12 are required to get a license at 12 rather than continuing as a mentored hunter. License buyers must rst successfully complete a Hunter-Trapper Education course. Over the years since its inception, the species of game animals and birds that are huntable through the program have expanded. Today, a mentored hunter can hunt squirrels, rabbits, hares, ruffed grouse, bobwhite

section of the Digest that pertains to the interaction between the mentor and the mentored hunter. As with the use of harvest tags, these requirements can be a bit complicated, so take the time to read and understand them before heading a eld. Armed with an understanding of all of the aspects and requirements of the Mentored Hunting Program, it is time to take a new hunter under your wing and enjoy time together in our great outdoors, as you guide them through the process of becoming a safe and ethical member of the hunting community. The time you spend together over the course of your mentoring will create a bond and memories that will prevail for years to come and might just instill in the new hunter the desire to pass it forward one day by becoming a mentor themselves! With all of the above in mind, there is a Golden Opportunity in the next few days! From Thursday, October 22 to Sunday, October 25, there is a statewide Special Firearms season for both antlerless deer and black bear. This season is open to Junior and Senior license holders – AND to mentored permit holders! Be aware that in order for a mentored permit holder to take a bear, they must be age 7 or older.

quail, pheasants, waterfowl, crows, doves, porcupines, woodchucks, coyotes, deer, bears, and wild turkeys in any of their respective seasons, and must follow daily and season bag limits for each species. Mentored hunters 16 and under may follow the same deer antler restrictions as junior license holders, which is one antler at least 3 inches long or one antler with at least two points. The current issue of the Pennsylvania Hunting and Trapping Digest spells out in detail all of the information regarding Mentored Hunting Program fees, which vary depending on the age of the mentored hunter. A bit more complicated are the regulations regarding the requirement of harvest tags and when they can or cannot be transferred between a mentor and the mentored hunter. If you are planning on being a mentor, it would be important to make sure you have a clear understanding of these regulations as written in the Digest. Safety and Liability are critically important issues, and mentoring a youth provides one of the best opportunities to instill in a new hunter the many facets of hunting and rearm handling safety and liability. All of the regulations and requirements are included in the

Kicking has long been a part of Kaiden’s young life. “I’ve been kicking since youth football. Kicking both soccer and football has really helped me develop strength in my legs. I’ve also enjoyed football, and when the team was looking for someone to kick during my sophomore year, I decided to go for it. “Playing soccer has helped me get a lot of lift on my extra points and kickoffs. am comfortable kicking, and the skill required for both sports has enabled me to develop more power in my kicks. The techniques of kicking in both sports are different, but they both improve when you are able to generate more power in your kicks. “Kicking extra points is a routine.
The rst one is usually scary, but once get past the rst one and settle in throughout the game, my mindset is, here I am, I’m about to kick it, and it is going to go through the uprights. Caleb Johnson is my holder, and we have very good trust with each other. I know as soon as the ball is snapped that he will get it down for a good hold. If something goes wrong, there is nothing I can do about it, and that doesn’t bother me when the next kick comes around. “This football season has been fun, and I’ve really enjoyed the experiences and good times we’ve had in our new performance center weight room with all the guys. It has been an improvement for every single person; strength-wise, conditioning-
wise, and the team camaraderie we’ve all experienced. We are getting close to the playoffs, and I hope I can keep my streak going, making all my extra points. Next year, I’ll be working on getting touchbacks with my kickoffs, and d like to be able to make 50yard eld goals. haven t had any eld goal opportunities this season but want to be ready when that chance comes.” Brotherly rivalry does exist between the two. “Playing with Kaiden is a little weird,” Colton admitted. “We’re both competitive and play on the same team, each one trying to be the best of the two. I’m a few minutes older, so that gives me some bragging rights.”

me whether we are playing home or away. My job is the same: get low and make sure I make the tackle and not let them get past me. “When the season began, I was expecting to have a really good team. I know we were coming off some decent seasons in the past. This year, with the lifting program we have, I expected the team to be better than last year. Experiencing a defensive player’s dream of intercepting a pass and running it back for a touchdown against Canton has been the highlight of Colton’s year, but as the season nears its end, he has other goals to accomplish. “I’d like to exceed 50 tackles and get a couple more picks. That would be fun.”

Sporting Matters With Spence…
Changes
I
love this time of year. North Central PA is blazing. Change is in the air. Everything is shining. Autumn brings us so many vibrant colors. I wish there were more hours. My son continues to take full advantage. We never got into hunting. It is a family thing, and we decided to pass. ut shing is our passion. We are both obsessed. It is something we love. Fall is our favorite time to throw a line. Especially here in PA. The landscapes are just splendid. Pictures don’t do her justice. We live in Cogan Station. Our favorite stretch is only minutes away. We are there quite often in the Spring and early

Summer. We’re back after the Fall stocking. Jensen has been out more than Dad. He heads up after school. Work and my extracurriculars get in the way. I joined him this past weekend. All shing is noble. My son throws a spinner, and I prefer to use a y rod. ensen tallied more. ut managed to get a few in the net. We had a great time. Walking and casting for miles. It was an all-day affair. Teach didn t understand. t was pouring. The Rainbows were full of color. The males were super dark. The females were on re. Most of my luck was with a small nymph I was bouncing on the bottom. I even tricked a few Browns

on a dry y. That was fantastic. Jensen captured some great footage. He stopped counting. We celebrated by watching the Nittany Lions that evening. Man. What an atmosphere. 114,419 people decked out in white. It was crazy. Jamie I had the chance to Spencer partake. But I am getting too old for those night games. Johnny Goodtimes retired. He had too much fun. I prefer to stay home. Teach is a proud graduate. I was never smart enough to get into the main campus. I wouldn’t say we are rabid fans. We cheer for PSU. But it is not life and death. Some of our friends are possessed. USC won. It wasn’t pretty. The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 in the BIG 10. Ouch. The natives are restless. They are fuming. We were in the same boat last year. re amesfranklin. Penn State has lost three straight games. We were once in the conversation to win a National Championship. Now we are struggling to even win a conference game. Amazing how things can suddenly change. I like Matt Campbell. He seems like a good dude. The former Iowa State HC inherited a mess. College Football has changed. The NIL and transfer portal are insane. Coach Campbell brought many of his players from
Iowa State. They are good, but they aren’t ready to compete in the BIG 10 race. Be careful with what you wish for. Those responsible have encouraged us to hang in there. This is all part of the rebuilding process. I can only relay the same. Do the PSU fans deserve better? Sure. But this will not happen overnight. Again. There are many factors. Hiring the next big name will not put your program in the top ve. You are only as good as your horses. Coach Campbell was hired very late in the game. The PSU recruits ipped. They went elsewhere. Some went to Virginia Tech with James Franklin. Again. The landscape has changed. Now ampbell and his staff have to nd and renew those relationships. This isn’t Iowa State. Cheers.
