I’m sure many of you are thinking about experiences in your life as you’re reading my column. I have no doubt we need ore good en stepping up to fill the fatherly role, earning the love to be called Dad. Making it your top priority to be a dad through the good, the bad, and often the unexpected. You never know where life is going to take you, let alone what’s going to happen when you add children to your journey. They depend upon your love, caring, actions, guidance, and direction as they grow older. Fatherhood and being a dad are a lifetime commitment that is always in motion. There has only ever been one Father-Son team that didn’t make a mistake when it comes to the mortal world. Being a dad is not about being perfect; it’s about always being there and learning. It’s about changing your approach, listening, and not being afraid to admit there’s a better way. It’s about learning patience and sel essness whether you have one child who needs your time or several at once. Then, when you think you ve got it figured out you reali e the ne t child re uires different parenting. Please never be afraid to ask for help or

I received a special Father’s Day present early from my sons this past week. I was present at their graduation from Leadership Lycoming as they were in the same class. What a great program. I will have more on this in the future. Let’s all stay safe out there and enjoy all the summertime events going on. God Bless America.

ecommendations have just been drawn up by the J.K. Mosser tannery, a plant of the Armour Leather Company, located in Newberry, which calls for the erection of a new six-story manufacturing building on Arch Street, for the purpose of expanding the cutting business of the local company. When the new department is in operation it is expected that the workforce at the factory will triple. According to present plans the new structure will be built of reinforced concrete with brick facings and up-to-date and modern in every detail. Plans call for 35,000 feet of oor space. The building will have

frontage of 150 feet on Arch Street, 302 feet in depth and 196 feet in the rear, where the new structure will adjoin the present property. The building will be erected on property that the company has owned for some time and also includes the recent purchase of a 50-foot lot on Arch Street secured from James Davison. Arrangements are now being made to move the dwellings on Arch Street that now stand on the site for the new building, to other locations. Realizing the need for housing facilities the company has taken this step instead of tearing the dwellings down. The ob ect of the co pany in erecting the new building is to double the output in the cutting department, which will mean a probable increase in the number of employees.

And I can’t forget the massive hutch my mom picked up for me at an antique sale — the one that boasts four doors five shelves and its original etal latches. Together we painted it on a sweltering summer day in the shade of our carport. She chose the color — a glorious shade of forest green that now complements my rustic kitchen décor. Who knew it would one day be wedged perfectly between our windows that overlook the front lawn? What’s more, I can’t forget the cozy, faux leather chair my brother and I somehow crammed ourselves into — together with our dog — while watching entirely too much Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry. My husband and I had to have the chair reupholstered once it wore out because I just couldn’t part with such a tangible reminder of my past — especially since my brother is no longer here to reminisce with. A generous sampling of his décor now adorns my kitchen countertops and the aforementioned hutch, too, and I can’t help but recall how they once looked in his house. The wicker basket he used for incoming mail. The beautiful canisters of colorful pasta. The crock full of old wooden spoons he collected.

I think he’d be happy that I’ve placed them prominently. And then there’s the car — my mom’s black BMW coupe. I loved that car and surmise that she loved it, too. I truly hated to part with it but had to trade it in eventually because the Blue Book value kept inching downward with each passing year. I drove it for close to nine years, never once becoming involved in a fender bender, thankfully. Frankly, I don’t think I ever felt so comfortable behind the wheel (before or since). It just fit e as if it new e li e it was cradling y body. It fit y o apparently, too, which is probably why she kept it so long. I sometimes scroll through y photos to find her car pictures I took just before I traded it in — in an effort to say goodbye or hello to o . I zoom in to the photos to remember the details, its sleek design, its undeniable beauty — and I smile. Sometimes the grief we experience is the good kind of grief — remembering what was, (and as they say) smiling because it happened. Welcome to my world. It’s where I live (probably smiling). County Hall Corner: Sites and Systems By Blair Steward

T

he Lycoming County Commissioners gathered on a recent Thursday to address the mechanical and human needs of a sprawling county government. Scott Metzger, Marc Sortman, and Mark Mussina took their places in the Third Street Plaza to work through an agenda that touched on everything from judicial infrastructure to the safety of the local prison system. One of the most significant moves of the morning involved the judicial presence in the Jersey Shore area. The board approved a new site for Magisterial District Judge Gary Dieter after encountering unforeseen issues with a location they had previously considered. Local courts provide an essential service by keeping justice accessible in the western reaches of the county, and this decision ensures that the Jersey hore o ce re ains a stable resource for the community. The financial health of the county also required immediate attention as the co issioners wor ed to finali e past pro ects. They ratified a settle ment agreement totaling $200,134 with Keystruct Construction, LLC. This payment comes from the general fund

and addresses lingering obligations regarding the construction of the coroner building. While settling such accounts re uires a significant allocation of public money, it allows the county to put construction disputes in the past and move forward with a clear slate. Every dollar in the general fund comes from local taxpayers, and the board is focused on closing these chapters with transparency and finality so the facility can operate as intended. Safety within the correctional facilities of Lycoming County took a front seat during the session. The board addressed critical prison sta ng shortages by rati fying a Memorandum of Understanding between the main prison, the pre-release

Summer Scarves

I

t may seem like summer is an unlikely time of year to wear a scarf, but with luxe silk squares, paisley bandanas, and linen wraps, summer scarves are a great item to have on hand. When they are lightweight, chic, and sizable enough to be worn in multiple ways, you are all set to level up your summer style. Here are a few scarf styling tricks to try this season. First up, wearing a scarf as a top. And yes, you do run the risk of appearing unseemly in a bandeau-scarf top, and I wouldn’t recommend it for most people. However, if you’re brave enough to try this breezy look, you’ll want to pick up fashion tape and nipple covers. If the idea of nipple covers didn’t scare you off then use a strip of tape across your chest. Then fold a 25-by25-inch-or-larger scarf, like Handker’s 34” Wild Rag Dandy Bandana, from corner to corner to make a triangle. Then press the folded edge across the upper chest to meet your applied tape. Pull the points behind the back and tie them into a double knot. If you

want to get extra fancy, you can try creating a halter top from a scarf by tying the unfolded scarf points around the neck and the loose ends tied behind the back. Either option again is not for the faint of fashion heart. If you’re uncomfortable with an exposed back, then simply tie your scarf over a tank top or camisole. Your summer scarf can also serve as a cover-up of sorts when worn like a sarong. Take a larger scarf and fold it into a triangle like above, then tie it around the waist instead of the chest. Marcu Adler’s Sea Print Sarong, available at Nordstrom Rack, features an art deco mermaid and measures 47”x47” to easily tie around the waist to create an asymmetrical silhouette. Be warned: this styling might not provide full bottom coverage, depending on how much material you are working with. Of course, you’re not limited to sporting a scarf around the midsection just over a swimsuit. You can also wear it like a belt to add shape, texture, and color to a basic tank dress. Or take a skinny scarf like Heading’s Enchanted Skinny Scarf, with its fantastical print of

head. First, lay the scarf unfolded fully over your head, covering your face. Then place the headband mid-forehead over the scarf. e t ip up the front of the scarf, tie it over the back of your head, then tie the ends. All this to say there’s more than one way to scarf a head. Lastly, one of the simplest ways to add a scarf to your summer look is to tie it in a knot around the handle of your purse. This is another great way to sport bandanas and helps create a one of a ind loo or add a bit of air to your everyday bag. Take a shoulder bag and wrap a simple, yet summery scarf, like Old Navy’s Cotton Scarf in blue or yellow oral a few ti es around one strap. If your purse already has tags or hardware, consider using them as an anchor rather than the handle or strap. Depending on your budget, you can check out some of the scarves mentioned here or invest in a high-quality, classic design. But one of my favorite ways to source scarves is from vintage and thrift stores. ou ll defi nitely find interesting options aybe even score something designer. woodland creatures against a dark teal background, and thread it through the belt loops on a pair of Bermuda shorts with a linen blouse for some whimsy. For a more traditional take on a summer scarf, there are hair scarves. A headscarf can work with all hair types; you just need to play with it a bit and, in most cases, use a few other tools like pins and clips. First fold like a triangle, and obviously, you don’t need as big a scarf for your head as you do for your torso and waist. Bandanas are perfect for most heads, and you probably already have a few of the traditional paisley ones; if not, check out American Eagle’s Lobster Bandana Scarf, which is a mix of the standard bandana pattern with cutesy little lobsters mixed in. Once you have your triangle, slip the two points under your hair and tie at the nape of your neck. For a variation, you can fold the triangle’s edge several times to make a smaller triangle, tuck it behind your ears to better show off your earrings then secure it with bobby pins behind the ears. Another way to keep a headscarf in place is to snap hair clips to the top of your head, then fold the fabric over and tie it in the back. I’ve also seen and am very interested in trying the headband method. This requires a fabric headband that goes around your whole

hen you look out at the third base coaching box at Bowman Field, you see the seemingly happy-go-lucky and jovial Cutters Manager Kenny Thomas clapping his hands and offering encouragement and direction to his Cutters players, but behind that apparent cheerfulness is a man who probably cries inside and remembers the beloved wife that he lost to cancer three years ago. enny suffered the unspea able loss of his wife, Judy, to cancer in 2023. “We were living in a retirement community in Hilton Head, South Carolina, owned by singer Jimmy Buffett when udy was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2021,” Thomas told Webb Weekly. “She soon started to take chemo treatments for the cancer and was battling the disease. i y Buffett heard about her cancer battle and kept dropping

her lines of encouragement, as well as calling each week to see how she was doing. That meant a great deal to her, and that helped her deal with her battle.” Interestingly Buffett was fighting his own battle with cancer. He died not long after Judy did. “Judy was always a very competitive and active person. She played pickleball, tennis, swam, and enjoyed sports in general,” Thomas said. “I think the competitive urges she got from those activities helped her in her fight with cancer. Thomas himself knew the value of the competitive impulse as a good athlete. Thomas spent 34 seasons as a college baseball head coach, retiring after the 2021 campaign. He spent 12 years at Volunteer State Community College (TN) and 22 at Division II USC Aiken (SC), compiling an overall record of 1,279-639. Thomas led USC Aiken to a national number-one ranking during the 2013 and 2017 regular

couldn’t have come at a better time. “Getting back into the dugout saved my life,” Thomas declared, “I don’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t returned to baseball. “There isn’t a day that I don’t think about Judy. I miss her so much.” There is a poem that I came upon not long after my wife, Mary, died titled, “As I Sit in Heaven.” I hope it brings some consolation to Kenny Thomas. I know it helped me. seasons and is a 2-time National Junior College Athletic Association Eastern District Coach of the Year. Over 60 players he has coached have been drafted professionally. He has also served as a local scout for the New York Yankees (1980-81), Cincinnati Reds (1981-82), and St. Louis Cardinals (1982-88. “When Judy died three years ago, I was devastated. I didn’t know what I was going to do, and I felt so alone,” Thomas said. “I was lost, and then Sean Campbell, president of the MLB Draft League, asked me to coach in the league, and I said yes. t first they were going to assign e to Mahoning Valley, but then they switched me to Williamsport.” Thomas said the call to come here

As I sit in heaven And watch you every day. I try to let you know with signs. I never went away I hear you when you’re laughing. And watch you as you sleep. I even place my arms around you. To calm you as you weep I see you wish the days away. Begging to have me home So I try to send you signs. So you know you are not alone. Don’t feel guilty that you have Life that was denied to me Heaven is truly beautiful. Just you wait and see So live your life, laugh again. Enjoy yourself, be free. Then I know with every breath you take You’ll be taking one for me…

In doing so, my father helped me to understand the character of my masculine Father in heaven. I wish everyone had the same life experience. They do not. Some people were abandoned by their fathers. Others were neglected, abused, and even exploited by their fathers. Their view of masculinity and fatherhood is vastly different than mine. They struggle to relate to God as their Father or to see him as male. My heart breaks for them. This is why I wrote last week’s article. We believers, must be more interested in building relationships than we are in winning debates. When someone asks you, “Is God ale instead of being offended or putting up knuckles to defend a position, simply seek to learn why that question is important to them. It is possible God sent them your way to receive the grace of love and patience, and understanding. Maybe they need to experience healthy masculinity and fatherhood — and maybe you’re the guy to do it. As we celebrate Father’s Day, remember that fatherhood isn’t always blood and biology. o eti es it s fulfilled by a an who becomes a father to the fatherless. By the way, that’s exactly how God describes himself in Psalm 68:4-6, Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him—his name is the Lord. A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

relationship with us. He is our Father; we are his children. That being understood, both Adam and Eve were created in the image of God: So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 learly God s i age is beautifully re ected in both genders, but that doesn’t mean he is one or the other or both or neither. His image cannot be understood within the limitations of our human experience, and we are silly to assume we can contain him in our cleverly designed and extremely wordy statements. Yes, when we seek to define God as ob s friends do we get very wordy. Wordiness tends to expose arrogance. Consider Proverbs 10:19, When there are many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable, but one who restrains his lips is wise. ob s friends were terribly wordy, and it exposed their assumptive arrogance. Instead of answering the question, “Is God male?”, it may be more important to understand why this question is important to so many people. After 40 years of pastoral experience, my guess is that some people struggle terribly with masculinity and fatherhood. I was blessed to have an amazing father who loved me unconditionally, provided for my needs, protected me from harm, encouraged the full development of my character, challenged me to develop my potential, disciplined me carefully and faithfully, and never hesitated to tell me how much he loved me and how proud he was of me.

eterans returning from the far reaches of World War II found a different ind of battle waiting for them in the quiet hills of Lycoming County. In June of 1946, these service members recognized an urgent need for protection in their rural corners. They did not wait for government intervention or outside help to arrive. Instead, they founded the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire o pany. Led by their first chief Earl LeGrande, and association president, harles da s the ran s swelled to eighty-one founding members by the end of that first su er. This was a generation defined by action and their legacy continues to protect the valley eighty years later. They traded their military uniforms for heavy coats, yet their mission to serve remained unchanged. Money was scarce for a new department with no tax support in the late 1940s. The earliest volunteers relied on the generosity of their neighbors and their own hard wor . To buy basic gear they organized community poultry and egg sales. The mission gained a powerful ally in September of 1946 when the

They elected Mrs. ughes as their very first president and began the tireless wor of fundraising that would sustain the company for decades. These women provided the financial bac bone that allowed the department to survive its infancy. The ac uisition of the very first fire engine remains one of the most cherished stories in the station’s history. A local businessman named C.L. Hulsizer challenged the firefighters to raise half the oney for a truc chassis. e pro ised to cover the remaining half from his own poc et if they could prove their co it ent. Chevrolet Howe pumper truck himself. This act of kindness gave the departent its first true engine and set a stan dard for local support that persists today. A permanent home required more than just a truck. Resident Fred Tebbs gifted nearly five acres of land along Highway 54 to give the volunteers a place to stand. In May of 1948, the members began digging the foundation by hand. They gathered on weekends to build a thirty-by-sixty-foot station themselves, laying every brick with a sense of shared purpose. They o cially finished construction on New Year’s Day in

1949. By the middle of the next decade, they became pioneers in emergency communications. They purchased their first wal ie tal ies and a obile two way radio in 1955, making them one of the most technologically advanced rural departments in the region. The needs of the community evolved, and the capabilities of the department grew alongside them. After a series of di cult apart ent fires in nearby Montgomery, the company realized they needed better ways to clear dangerous air. In April of 1961, they purchased two smoke exhaust fans, which

Recognizing their original utility vehicles were too small for an expanding cache of life-saving tools, they upgraded to a larger international walk-in equipment truck in October of 1962. Every new tool was a promise kept to the people living in their shadow, an investment in the safety of their neighbors. Community tragedy has also shaped the resolve of the department. In early 1989, a mother and her two infants perished after their vehicle entered the Susquehanna River. Because no local team was equipped for underwater emergencies at that time, the members

UPMC Expert: The Role of Aeromedical Transport In Rural Emergencies Jim Houser, President, UPMC’s Center for Emergency Medicine (CEM) of Western Pennsylvania

I

n an emergency, time matters, but so does getting a patient to the right level of care. In North Central Pennsylvania, where long distances and rural geography can complicate emergency response, aeromedical transport can help bridge that gap. STAT MedEvac gives emergency teams

a way to move critically ill or injured patients quickly when every minute counts and specialized care is needed. While not every emergency requires a helicopter, air transport can be an important part of the response when speed, distance, and a patient’s condition all factor into the decision. What Prompts a MedEvac Activation? A MedEvac activation is usually considered when a patient has a serious, time-sensitive condition and reaching the

appropriate hospital uic ly could affect the outcome. That may include major trauma, stroke symptoms, certain cardiac emergencies, severe burns, or other critical illnesses and injuries that require specialized treatment not available at the nearest facility. In addition to speed, the condition of the patient may require specialized treatment delivered by the ight crew. These tea s of specially trained nurses and paramedics bring years of experience and advanced clinical training. That expertise helps ensure patients begin receiving critical, potentially life-saving care as soon as possible. In a region like North Central Pennsylvania the decision ay also be in uenced by distance, road travel time, weather, and the need to get a patient to a trauma center, stroke center, or another hospital equipped for advanced care. The purpose of air transport is not simply to move faster. It is to help patients get where they need to be as safely and e ciently as possible, when time truly matters. Local EMS and Hospital Team Coordination Aeromedical transport is part of a larger emergency care system, and that system depends on close coordination. When a helicopter is requested, local EMS providers, county 911 dispatchers, emergency depart ent tea s and the ight crew wor together to quickly assess the situation and determine the safest, most appropriate transport plan. Sometimes, the aircraft responds directly to the scene. In other cases a patient is first

evaluated or stabilized at a local hospital before being transferred to a higher level of care. During the ight the crew can continue critical care while staying in communication with the receiving hospital, so the next team is ready when the patient arrives. That coordination helps make a fast-moving situation more seamless for both patients and providers. What Families Can Expect For families, a helicopter transfer can be stressful and happen very quickly. In most situations, the immediate priority is stabilizing the patient and getting them to the hospital best equipped to provide the care they need. Loved ones may sometimes be able to travel on the aircraft, but that depends on several conditions at the time of transport and cannot be guaranteed. If they cannot, the care team will explain where the patient is being taken and what to expect next whenever possible. Communication may continue through the local hospital, EMS team, or receiving facility as more information becomes available. Even though the process can feel overwhelming in the moment, a MedEvac transfer is made because the medical team believes it offers the patient the best oppor tunity for timely, specialized care. When seconds count, that ability to quickly connect patients with advanced treatment can a e all the difference. Jim Houser is the president of UPMC’s Center for Emergency Medicine (CEM) of Western Pennsylvania. become more aware of opportunities, kindness, and progress. This does not mean ignoring pain or pretending life is easy. Di culties are real and no one benefits fro denying the instead looking for the good means choosing not to let hardship be the only thing we notice. Even in hard moments, there may be a lesson, a small victory, a supportive friend, or the strength to keep going. There is also a practical reason this mindset works. People who expect good things often behave in ways that make positive outcomes more likely. They are more likely to persevere, encourage others, express gratitude, and take healthy action when challenges arise. In that

way, looking for good things does not ust help a person see ore good it can help create more of it. lti ately finding the positive in things is good for health because it supports the whole person. It helps the mind stay resilient, the body stay calmer, and relationships stay stronger. It encourages people to cope with life’s troubles and to act rather than give up. Life will always include challenges, but a positive perspective can turn those challenges into opportunities for growth instead of sources of constant stress. That is why positivity is not just pleasant, it’s a practical health tool that can improve life from the inside out.

we would be better able to fight off a cold or some other illness. While good vibes ight not actually cure the u staying positive can help the conditions that support healing and a strong immune system. A positive outlook can also improve sleep, energy, and overall quality of life. People who tend to focus only on what is wrong with a situation often carry worry and tension. Their minds replay problems, imagining worst-case scenarios, or criticizing themselves. Over time, this pattern can lead to poor sleep and mental exhaustion. Conversely, people who practice gratitude are often able to settle their minds more easily. Better sleep affects nearly every syste in the body, including memory, mood, metabolism, and immune health. When people sleep better, they usually have more patience, better concentration, and greater emotional stability during the day. In life people tend to find what they re looking for. Good or bad. All of this positivity is manifested physically as well. Studies have found that more optimistic people may have a lower risk of cardiovascular problems. We already discussed how a good attitude can help reduce stress. In addition, optimistic people tend to make healthier choices. Someone who believes their actions matter is more likely to exercise, eat nutritious food, keep medical appointments, and avoid harmful habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol. In this way, positivity shapes daily behavior, and daily behavior has a major in uence on long ter wellness. In addition to lower stress levels and a healthier heart, a positive attitude can also strengthen the immune system. Researchers have been studying the connection between emotions and our ability to fight off illness for decades. Studies have shown that being positive and less stressed can reduce in a ation in the body. To me, this just makes good sense. Of course, if we are in a better headspace and are more resilient,

I strongly advise that you don’t try to handle turtles unless you know what you are dealing with. Most turtles are relatively docile and can be easily handled, but that’s not the case with a Snapping turtle. napping turtle has a fierce and very powerful strike and bite, and believe me, they will try to execute that activity when handled. As the backgrounds of all the assembled athletes were presented to the gathering, it became obvious the adversity they had dealt with wasn’t always physical but also involved emotional and mental distress. “Part of the job is providing a lot of TLC for some of the kids. Sometimes that’s all they need,” Rieppel added. “When you are with them all day, every day, you learn things about them at a level some people don’t get to experience. You see all sides of them, good and bad, and sometimes you ay feel li e a other father figure. To e that s a part of the ob I really li e. In those instances you are ta ing care of them as people, not just as athletes.” In a roo filled with athletic trainers coming from varied backgrounds, for Rieppel, the career seed was planted early. fter y unior year of high school I attended an athletic training clinic at the in uncy. I new I wanted to do so ething in the edical field but I really didn’t know what. The clinic exposed me to the basics of the ob and I loved it. Then during y senior year I had so e injuries, and working with trainer Stan ith I saw how it wor s day in and day out. That sealed the deal for me as far as pursuing this career path.” The seventeen honored athletes played different sports and their in uries varied but they all had one thing in common failure was not an option It was a consummate example to be left for those who will follow in their footsteps.

one that has had a strong rehabilitation process. We also look for kids who have approached this with a very positive, forward-thinking attitude. These are kids who have not let a negative event become an obstacle to future success. There are no fir selection guidelines but I thin most trainers select kids who are generally happy, who go through struggles, but can so ehow find a will within the selves through their families, faith, and athletic trainers, to move forward, get over the hurdle and get bac on the field or court. “Over the years, there have been a lot of kids who stick out in my mind. All of us have had that experience. A lot of us have a background as an athlete, loving sports, and some of us have been injured ourselves, and we remember that feeling. Now we have the ability to help these young athletes get back to their former level of participation, and it is the best thing. We are with them when we have to tell them bad news, and my heart breaks. But then seeing them go through the injury and recovery process is indescribable. It is the reward of being an athletic trainer.” Now in her seventh year as an athletic trainer, South Williamsport’s Chelsea Rieppel echoes the sentiment of her colleagues. “Tonight celebrates the kids that have had to go through something hard and have pushed through it and made the most of their experience.”
